I was older than the age restriction of 13, in case you were wondering! The movie marked a turning point in cinema history with some of the first really good computer- generated images and it won an Oscar for best visual effects. Of course we’re now used to an incredible standard of animation, so it will be interesting to see what it looks like when it is re-released in 3-D in May. If you are too young to see Jurassic Park , don’t worry. We have lots of cool dino stories for you this month. Check out what new discoveries have been made and some of the myths about dinos. There are also two awesome dino posters. We are very proud to present our Young Artists. The judges from Bostik were really impressed by your entries. It was a lot of fun judging this year as there was so much ingenuity, humour and beautiful work to choose from. Don’t forget to wish your mum a Happy Mother’s Day on 12 May. W I N OWL RUNS RACES London, England Watching Bob the burrowing owl get a workout is a real hoot – this bird enjoys running. “His long legs are like a blur when he’s on the move,” says animal trainer Jim Mackie of the ZSL London Zoo where Bob lives. Most owl species hunt prey from the air while flying. Burrowing owls such as Bob stay grounded as they search for grub. These birds are used to scuttling about and Bob is so fast that his keepers built him a metre-long track with a finishing line ribbon so he could practise sprinting. Tucking in his wings and leaning forward, the feathered runner charges from one end of the track to the other. To refuel after a jog, the bird chomps fat mealworms. The owl has even competed in “races”. During a zoo event, various animals sprinted the same distance separately and then keepers compared their times. Although Bob wasn’t quite as fast as one speedy armadillo, the bird wasn’t fazed. “He’s more interested in his snack than in winning,” Jim says. Bob must be a good sport! a thank you belly rub? yes, please! 8 MAY 2013 hoo, HOO, WHo is number one? BY KITSON JAZYNKA Daniel Pudding Elvis Bob Somersby, Australia Elvis the saltwater crocodile is a reptile with a criminal record – he stole a lawnmower! He had been eyeing the machine while a groundskeeper mowed the grass inside his enclosure at the Australian Reptile Park. When the worker came near the lagoon where Elvis was resting, the almost five-metre-long predator launched himself out of the water. Clamping his huge jaws around the lawnmower’s front wheel, the croc pulled the machine into his pool. “It usually takes two of us to pick up that equipment,” says Tim Faulkner, who runs the park. “Elvis is so strong, he lifted it clear off the ground using just his mouth.” He didn’t want to give it up either and guarded his new toy until his keepers distracted him with a snack. While Elvis was busy devouring his food, Tim waded into the water to fetch the mower. What made this croc turn into a crook? “It’s possible Elvis nabbed the lawnmower because he was annoyed by the rumbling,” Tim says. “He definitely showed the machine who’s boss.” Sturgeon Bay, America It was late at night and very quiet, but Pudding the cat sensed trouble in his home. His owner, Amy Jung, has diabetes. This means her body can’t control blood sugar levels. While she was sleeping, Amy’s blood sugar had dropped so low that she had a seizure and went into a coma. If she didn’t get her medication soon, she could die. Somehow Pudding knew his owner was in danger and sprang into action. Leaping on to Amy’s chest, he frantically swatted her face with his paw to wake her. When she didn’t stir, the usually gentle cat nipped his owner’s nose. Amy came to, but couldn’t move or speak. The cat dashed off to wake her eight-year-old son, Ethan. “I have no idea how Pudding got into his room, because the door was shut,” Amy says. They rushed to Amy and Ethan gave her medicine. “Cats form strong bonds with people and want to help if something goes wrong,” says cat behaviourist Mieshelle Nagelschneider. Amy has recovered and is in awe of Pudding. “I’m so lucky to have this big, fuzzy lifeguard around,” she says. CAT RESCUES OWNER CROC NABS LAWNMOWER a thank you belly rub? yes, please! NatioNal GeoGraphic KiDS 9 AT LAST SOME PEACE AND QUIET! 10 february 2013 BY CRISPIN BOYER SUPER SCOOPER Scooping up after your dog is a dirty job. Leave it to a kid to help invent a device that takes out the grossest part of this chore. Together with his father, nine-year-old Connor Reynolds created a rechargeable vacuum that picks up piles left by dogs. The Pooch Power Shovel has a powerful motor that whisks pieces straight into a biodegradable bag, saving you from close encounters. When the bag is full, just replace it. You’ll spend less time fetching Fido’s “presents” and more time playing fetch! © solar impulse / stéphane gros (big picture); © g solar impulse / jean revillard (plane inset); © anna utekhina / dreamstime (dog); © adam bettcher (pooch power shovel); © james lee needham (speakers) BIKE RADIO As much as you might like to rock while you ride, wearing headphones on a bicycle is just too risky. Sound-matters has designed speakers you can mount on your handlebars so you can take your music with you. Just link the rechargeable wireless speakers to a portable music player, then enjoy loud and clear playback of your favourite riding tunes. The speakers last for five hours on a single charge, so chances are you’ll run out of energy long before they do. this is one vacuum i’m not scared of. Soar around the globe on the power of sunshine in a plane called the Solar Impulse. Solar panels line nearly the whole of the plane’s wingspan, absorbing energy from the sun and storing it in batteries that power four electric propellers. The plane completed its first overnight flight in 2010, flying nonstop for more than 26 hours. This proved that the plane could harness enough solar power during the day to keep it flying through the night. A one-seater aircraft, the Solar Impulse is built to be as light as possible. Even the pilot has a weight limit of 85 kilograms. PlAnE RUnS On SUnlIght!
