Class 11: MOTION PICTURE WORD STUDY GIÁO VIÊN THỰC HIỆN: TRẦN NỮ MAI THY TỔ NGOẠI NGỮ - 1 - LESSON PLAN Name of the lesson: Unit 1: MOTION PICTURES– Word Study Class: 11 th form Teacher in charge: Trần Nữ Mai Thy - Đặng Huy Trứ Upper Secondary school Aims: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to master how to make a noun compound from Noun- Verb+ er/or Skills: reading, speaking, listening, writing Structure: Noun- Verb+ er/or = Noun Compound Teaching aids: PowerPoint, sheets, papers, coloured chalk, a tin opener, a pen holder, a bottle opener. PROCEDURE *Greetings *Checking attendance *Warm up: FINDING WORDS (6’) Ss are divided into 12 groups. In 5 minutes, each group has to write as many nouns made by Verb+er/or as possible. Which one has more correct nouns will be the winner. Material: papers, coloured chalk I. PRESENTATION: 1. Lead- in: (5’) T shows some pictures and asks - Picture 1: Beckham: - T: Who is he? - Ss: He is Beckham. - T: What does he do? - Ss: He is a football player. - Picture 2: My Tam - T: What’s her name? - Ss: Her name is My Tam. - T: Is she pop singer or rock singer? - Ss: She is a pop singer. - Picture 3: Kate and Leonardo: - T: In what film is this scene? - Ss: In Titanic. - 2 - - T: Are they on holidays or at work? - Ss: They are on holidays. - Yes, they are holiday- makers. - T shows a collection of stamps and asks: - T: What is this? - It’s a collection of stamps. - T: Yes, this is my collection of stamp. I am a stamp- collector. 2. Elicitation: (2’) - T: What part of speech are these: football player, pop singer, holiday-maker and stamp- collector? - Ss: They are nouns. - T: Yes, they are noun compounds. Can you tell me how to form these noun compounds? - Ss: Noun- Verb+er/or - T: Very good. Today, we are going to learn Noun compounds which are formed by Noun - Verbs+er/or 3. Explanation: (2’) T shows the formation of Noun Compounds and presents some notes about the way of writing and the structure of noun compound: Noun (in singular) +V-er/or. II. PRACTICE Exercise 1: Picking noun compounds: (5’) (Pairwork) Underline the noun compounds in the following paragraph: Yesterday, I went to the bank to borrow some money. “What would I do for you, sir?” the bank manager asked. “Yes, my name is Tom Baker. I am living in 123 Carton Street, Boston. I would like to borrow some money to buy a new house”. “All right,” the bank manager replied, “First, tell me about your job, income and your family.” “I am a taxi driver. I earn about $1,000 a month. There are four members in my family. My wife is a dressmaker. My son is working in the cinema company. He is a film editor. He doesn’t come home until very late at night. My daughter is a bookseller in the Central Bookshop. She is also a good tennis player. She’s always a tennis record- - 3 - holder in the city. We would like to borrow about $25,000 to buy a new house in the countryside” “All right. So, why do you want to buy a new house?” - T checks on the screen. Exercise 2: Finding noun compounds (3’) (The whole class) T shows the definition one by one. Ss must speak out the correct noun compounds. + A person who manages a bank. (A bank manager) + A person who drives a taxis. (A taxis driver) + A person who edits films. (A film editor) + A person who sells books. (A book seller) + A person who makes dresses. (A dressmaker) Exercise 3: Gap-Fill: (5’) (Individually) Fill the following gaps with the suitable words: 1. Peter Sampras is the best …………………in the world. 2. - Oh, what a beautiful dress! Where did you buy it? - No, I didn’t buy it. I had my sister, a……………. make it for me. 3. - Oh, it’s too late now. I’ll miss the flight. - Shall I call a …………… to drive you to the airport? 4. When you come to the bank to borrow money, you have to contact the ……………….to ask for information. 5. Each group has one representative to stand in front of class (without seeing the screen). Pictures will be shown on the screen. The rest of the group has to explain the picture on the screen (without using the words in its noun compound) so that their representative is able to speak out the correct noun compounds. Which one has more correct answers will be the winner. * Homework: Make sentences, using the following noun compounds (1’) + Ticket collector + Book keeper + Ballet dancer A record player 1.
