Read the passage and mark A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 40. According to some scientists, migratory birds should be able to withstand the winter. A birds feathery coat is good insulation against the cold. Because a bird is warm-blooded, its body temperature always remains constant, even if the temperature of its surroundings changes. The factors that trigger migratory behaviour in birds are difficult to explain. This behaviour seems to be instinctive, not learned. For example, many northern species leave their summer homes while the weather is still warm and the food supply plentiful. Young arctic terns born at the arctic breeding grounds will take off with the flock for distant lands they have never seen. Bird migrations are probably regulated by the glandular system. Scientists suspect that the changing length of the day is the factor that triggers migratory behavior. In an experiment, migratory birds were kept in artificially lighted rooms. It was found that if periods of darkness were lengthened proportionately, the glands of the birds became active. These glands secrete hormones, which are chemicals that control numerous body functions. Shorter periods of daylight seem to change the hormone balance of birds, so that they retain more fat. This stored fat is the fuel that provides the energy for a long flight. The same experiment revealed that the birds became more excited as the artificial night was lengthened. It is probably no coincidence that most flocks begin their migratory flights during the night. 1. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. Common migratory paths for birds. B. Why birds migrate C. Never before have so many people had access to so many different sources of information. For all of the Internet’s advantages, however, people are currently becoming aware of some of its drawbacks and are looking for creative solutions. Among the current problems, which include a general lack of reliability and numerous security concerns, the most crucial is speed. First of all, the Internet has grown very quickly. In 1990, only a few academics had ever heard of the Internet. In 1996, over 50 million people used it. Every year, the number of people with access to the Internet doubles. The rapid growth has been a problem. The computer systems which run the Internet have not been able to keep up with the demand. Also, sometimes a request for information must pass through many routing computers before the information can be obtained. A request for information made in Paris might have to go through computers in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo in order to obtain the required information. Consequently, service is often slow and unpredictable. Service also tends to be worse when the Internet is busiest – during the business day of the Western Hemisphere- which is also when companies need its service the most. Some people are trying to harness the power of networked computers in such a way to avoid this problem. In 1995, a group of American universities banded together to form what has come to be known as Internet II. Internet II is a smaller, more specialized, fewer users are allowed access. Consequently, the time required to receive information has decreased. Businesses are beginning to explore a possible analogue to the Internet II. Many businesses are creating their own” Intranets”. These are systems that can only be used by the members of the same company. In theory, fewer users should translate into a faster system. Intranets are very useful for large national and international companies whose branches need to share information. Another benefit of an Intranet is an increased amount of security. Since only company employees have access to the information on the Intranet, their information is protected from competitors. While there is little doubt that the Internet will eventually be a fast , reliable service, industry and the academic community have taken their own steps toward making more practical global networks. 31: The word “ access” in line 7 is closest in meaning to “________” A. aspiration B. admittance C. sincerity D. variation 32: According to the passage, which of the following is true of the Internet? Phone lines are often too busy with phone calls and fax transmissions to handle Internet traffic. B. Often a request must travel through many computers before it reaches its final destination. C. Most people don’t have computers that are fast enough to take advantage of the Internet. D. Scientists take up so much time on the Internet, thus slowing it down for everyone else. 34: The word “ obtain” in line 11 is closest in meaning to “______” A. understand B. purchased C. acquired D. distributed 35: The word” harness” in line 15 is closest in meaning to “ _______” A. utilize B. disguise C. steal D. block 36: According to the passage, what benefits does Internet II have over the Internet? A. There is no government intervention regulating Internet II. B. Small businesses pay higher premiums to access the Internet. C. Internet II has fewer users and therefore is faster to access. D. Internet II contains more information than the Internet. 37: The word “ analogue” in line 19 most nearly means “________” A. similarity B. alternative C. use D. solution 38: The word “their” in line 24 refers to “______” 7 A. competitors B. Intranets C. company employees D. companies 39: With which of the following conclusions would the author probably agree? A. Fewer academic communities need to create their own internet systems. B. The technology used by internet creators is too complex for computer owners to understand. C. An Internet system with fewer users would be quicker. D. Companies who develop their own intranets are limiting their information data base. 40: All of the following are advantages of business “ Intranets” mentioned in the passage EXCEPT __ A. They provide a higher level of security. B. They share information with other company C. They are cheaper than other alternative. D. They move data faster. It is a common saying that we do not fully value a thing until we lose it. We often value the love and worth of a friend when he has been taken from us by death more than when he was with us in the flesh ; it is only when we have left school or college that we understand the greatness of our opportunity of education, which has gone forever; and it is the sick and the ailing who realize the value of good health. When we are young and strong, we cannot imagine what it is to be weak and ailing. We are so used to vigorous health that we take it for granted. The organs of our body work so smoothly that we scarcely know we have lungs and livers, hearts and stomachs. But when any of these gets upset and give us pain and sickness, we learn by bitter experience what an unspeakable it is to be well. Loss of health makes us miserable and it is a burden to ourselves and our friends. It cripples our efforts so that we cannot accomplish many of the good and great things we might have done. It spoils our life. What must we do to keep our health? We must be moderate in eating and drinking , and wise in the choice of plain, wholesome, simple food. Gluttony has killed thousands and strong drink has skilled tens of thousands. We must, when young, get plenty of sleep, which is nature’s sweet restorer, and not try to burn the candle at both ends. We must live as much as possible in the open air and keep our rooms well ventilated. We must get sufficient and regular physical exercise, and keep our bodies clean. We must avoid bad habits and secret sins as we avoid the devil and keep our thoughts clean and our bodies pure. Our ideal must be the sound mind in the sound body. 36. The phrase “ in the flesh” used in line 2 can be best replaced by _______ A. in mental form B. in physical bodily form C. in material form D. in spiritual form 37. B. think that our health will decline day after day. C. suppose that we will never stay in good health again. D. assume that our health will be weakened by time, so we should pay much attention to it. 38. In the line 12, the word “ gluttony” may probably means _________ A. the bad habit of eating too much B. the bad habit of working too much C. the bad habit of sleeping too much D. the bad habit of spending too much money. 39. In the line 13, the phrase “ nature’s sweet restorer” refers to ______ A. gluttony B. drink C. sleep D. food 40. According to the passage, we often appreciate our friends _________ A. only when they are with us B. only when they are nice to us C. only when they passed away D. only when they live a long way from us 41.
