This will have serious effect on agriculture. In warmer areas, it will be too dry. The amount of water could decrease by 50%. This could cause a large decrease in agricultural production. World temperatures could increase two degrees centigrade by the year 2040. This could cause the ice sheets to melt and raise the level of the oceans by one or two metres. Many coastal cities would be under water. Why is this happening? There is too much carbon dioxide in the air. When oil gas and coal burn, they create large amounts of carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide lets sunlight enter the Earth’s atmosphere and heat the Earth. However, it does not let as much heat leave the atmosphere and enter space. It is like a blanket. The heat can pass through the blanket to warm the Earth. The heat stays there and cannot get through the blanket again. Scientists call it the Greenhouse Effect. A greenhouse is a building for growing plants. It is made of glass and clear plastic. These scientists say that we must start planning now. We need to do research so we can predict what will happen. We much conserve coal, oil and gas. However other scientists disagree. They say there is no reason to worry because we have at least twenty years to plan and the Greenhouse Effect will not be very serious. They believe that there is no way for the world to slow it down or stop it. We must just prepare for a high-temperature world. Meanwhile all the scientists agree that we must continue measuring the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and observing its effects. 79) What is the topic of the paragraph? A. Carbon dioxide. C. A greenhouse is made of glass and clear plastic. D. Coal, oil and gas must be conserved. 83) What is the common idea of all scientists? A. We must start planning now. B. The Greenhouse Effect is not very serious. C. The Greenhouse Effect is very serious. D. They keep on measuring the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and observing its effects. II/ Read the passage carefully and then choose the best answer: Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 – 1910), the United States’ famous humourist and the author of popular and outstanding autobiographical works, travel books, and novel. The first thirsty-six years of Clemens’ life gave him experiences – as a boy in a little town in Missouri, as a steamboat pilot, as a reporter on the far western frontier, and as a traveler abroad – which he thereafter used as materials for his best and most successful writings. He was born on November 30 th , 1835. Hannibal was the town of Clemens’ boyhood, destined to figure importantly in several of his finest books. The steamboats which Clemens and his gangs of boyhood friends watched wheeling past or docking at the wharf were endlessly fascinating. The river and the woods around the town were wonderful places for the boys to play. In the summer, Samuel ordinarily paid a vacation visit to the farm of his uncle John Quarles, near Florida. Some of his happiest and most vivid memories were to be of his play around Hannibal and of his visit to the farm. The Adventure of Tom Sawyer (1876) was one of Twain’s best books, certainly his best for juvenile audience. The setting was St. Petersburg. The characters were the grownups and the children of the town in the 1830s. The happy endings endear the book to children; the lifelike picture of the boy, Tom Sawyer, and his friends is enjoyed by many people, both young and old. 84) Mark Twain’s real name was ______. A.
