A Read the text carefully and then choose the correct answer :

In the Middle Ages the hospital had a simple function: it was the gateway to death At its best, it led to a gentle and easy death, as a release from pain; at its worst, it was the place where the sick were robbed of a flickering last hope and drowned in their own despair

To the modern hospital, the problem of death is of minor concern The moden hospital is haven for the sick, a source of knowledge of disease, and above all, a laboratory where the sick are studied for their sakes, and the death for the benefit of the living Far from acting as a gateway to death, it is the window opening on an active scene of life

It is true that the modern hospital merely performs duties that medicine has performed throughout the ages according to its dim contemporary light: it must relieve the pains of the suffuring and the dying, it must heal wounds and stop the ravages of disease What distinguishes it from its prdecessors, however, is not so much its greater efficiency but the qualitative difference of its work

36 The hospital in the Middle Ages is described as the gateway to death because

A it is primarily intended to bring an easy death to those who were suffering

B few of the patients treated there could eventually escape death

C it received only dying people

D it was concerned, not with treatment, but with death

37 The modern hospital is compared to a window opening on an active scene of life because

A it had an atmosphere joy and activity

B the patients are allowed to look out on the lively street scenes outside

C few people die in a modern hospital

Trang 4

D it concern itself, not only with death and the sick, but also with life and the healthy

38 The phrase its dim contemporary light refers to

A the little knowledge that medicine has of disease and treatment

B the lack of sunlight in ancient hospitals

C the dull atmosphere in many hospitals

D the poor elctrical lighting in the past

39 As it is indicated in the passage, the basic different between the modern hospital

and those of the past ages lies in the fact that

A the modern hospital saves more people’s life

B the modern hospital is more comfortable

C the modern hospital can control more diseases

D the modern hospital privides better work

40 The sick are studied for their sakes means that they are studied

C for their own benefit D for the money they pay
