In many countries, people get together with family and friends on December 31 st to eat, drink, dance, and welcome January 1 st at midnight. In many Western countries people make changes in their lives over the coming year, such as to lose weight, get a new job, or learn a new skill. In many Asian countries, people also celebrate the Lunar New Year, usually in late January or early February. People spend time with family and eat special foods. Lunar New Year, or Tet, is also Vietnam’s main holiday. It is the grandest and most important occasion in the year which falls sometimes between 19 th January and 20 th February on Western calendar. Tet marks the beginning of spring. Tet’s preparations and celebrations used to spread over months, but nowadays the holiday is much shorter. On Tet holiday, vietnamese people usually make the special foods such as, Banh Chung, which is made from sticky rice, green beans and fatty pork; and Mut, which is candied fruit such as sugared apples, plums, or tomatoes. On the first day of Tet, people visit other family members or friends, and they exchange New Year’s wishes. And children usually receive their “lucky money” inside red envelopes.
