9 Chapter D ✦ Windows Shortcuts ✦ If the current brush is one of the preset brushes in the Options bar, press the comma or period (, or .) to step backward or forward through the preset brushes when a paint or edit tool is selected. Press Shift+comma or Shift+ period to jump to the first or last of the preset brushes. ✦ Press Shift+[ and Shift+] to decrease and increase the brush hardness. The diameter changes in 25-percent increments. ✦ When a paint or edit tool is selected, press a number key to change the Opacity, Pressure, or Exposure setting assigned to that tool in the Options bar. Lower values result in translucent strokes and fills. Press 1 to change the value to 10 percent, 2 for 20 percent, all the way up to 0 for 100 percent. Or enter the exact value by typing two numbers right in a row. For example, type 1 and 5 for 15 percent. ✦ Select the gradient tool and press the bracket keys, [ and ], to switch between the five gradient styles. Press the comma or period (, or .) to step backward or forward through the predefined gradients. Press Shift+comma or Shift+period to switch to the first or last gradient in the list. ✦ When the text tool is selected, press the left bracket to toggle between the standard and the mask modes. Press the right bracket to set type orientation. ✦ Select any of the shape tools and press the comma or period (, or .) to step backward or forward through the predefined styles. Press Shift+comma or Shift+period to jump to the first or last style in the list. ✦ With the rounded rectangle tool active, press the bracket keys, [ and ], to decrease and increase the corner radius. ✦ Select the polygon tool and press the bracket keys, [ and ], to decrease and increase the number of sides that the resulting polygon will have. ✦ For the line tool, pressing the bracket keys, [ and ], decreases and increases the line width. ✦ Select the custom shape tool and press the bracket keys, [ and ], to step back- ward or forward through the predefined shapes. Press Shift+[ and Shift+] to switch to the first or last predefined shape. The Great-Grandmother of All Shortcut Tables Saddam Hussein has been an unpopular fellow for some time now, but you have to give him credit for that “mother of all battles” thing. English isn’t even the guy’s first language, yet he added a wonderful catch phrase to it. I’m sure we’ll be joking about the mothers of all this and that for years to come. That Saddam, what a sense of humor. 10 Extra Reading ✦ Photoshop 6 for Windows Bible Even so, the phrase doesn’t quite do justice to Table D-1. Here’s a list covering nearly every keystroke and modifier available to Photoshop 6, more than 400 in all! By the way, don’t press Shift just because a key combination involves a character that normally requires the Shift key. Just press the key with the shortcut character on it. For example, the shortcut for the Zoom In command is Ctrl+plus (+). Technically, + is the Shifted version of equal (=), so a literal person might think you have to press Ctrl+Shift+=. But the literal person would be wrong. The plus sign is used because it implies zooming while the equal sign does not. So when you see Ctrl+plus (+), just press Ctrl+=. Naturally, a shortcut won’t make much sense if you aren’t familiar with the feature it facilitates. I explain both specific features and their shortcuts in context in other chapters. The intent of the table is to serve as a reference you can revisit as your knowledge of Photoshop grows. The more you learn, the more useful the table becomes. Many of Photoshop’s keyboard shortcuts involve both the Ctrl and Alt keys. Ctrl+ Alt+O invokes the Open As command, Ctrl+Alt+Z undoes an operation from the History palette. Unfortunately, this isn’t entirely kosher with Microsoft. Windows 95 (and later) likes to reserve Ctrl+Alt combinations to launch applications. For exam- ple, let’s say you set Ctrl+Alt+Z to launch Nico Mak’s popular WinZip. (In case you’re unclear how to do this, create a shortcut icon for WinZip. Then right-click the shortcut icon, choose Properties, click the Shortcut tab, and enter Z into the Shortcut Key option box.) From this point on, Windows snags the keystrokes before Photoshop can react to it. So rather than undoing an operation, Ctrl+Alt+Z launches WinZip. The only way to avoid this conflict is to steer clear of the keys Photoshop uses — B, D, E, F, J, K, L, M, N, O, S, T, U, X, Z, plus, minus, semicolon, and zero through nine—when assigning file-launching shortcuts.
