Pressing Alt on the key- board will highlight the letters next to the menu items. Then pressing the correspond- ing letter on the keyboard will initiate the menu item. Aligned button A button used in the Mate PropertyManager to set the alignment condition of standard and advanced mates. When selected, the Aligned button makes the vectors that are normal to the selected faces point in the same direction. anchor point 1. A point in a drawing sheet format used to attach and anchor tables to prevent them from being moved. 2. The endpoint at the tip of a leader for a note, dimension, or other annotation. Angle mate A geometric relation between parts in an assembly used to define the angle between the components. angle of the revolution The angle covered by a revolved feature where a revolution is equal to or lesser than 360°. annotations A note or symbol used to specify the design intent of a part, assembly, or drawing. Annotations can include notes, flagnotes, geometric symbols, balloons, and hole call- outs. In drawings, centerlines, center marks, hatches, and blocks are also considered annotations. Anti-Aligned button A button used in the Mate PropertyManager to set the alignment condition of standard and advanced mates. When selected, the Anti-Aligned button makes the vectors that are normal to the selected faces point in opposite directions. appearances Appearances are used to add visual proper- ties to a model, such as color or realistic material textures, without affecting the physical properties of the model. Appearances/Scenes tab A tab on the task pane in which appearances and scenes can be added to the active model. arc A single portion of a circle equaling less than 360°. assembly A group of parts that when fitted together make a single unit. assembly configuration A single variation of an assembly with mul- tiple versions. autotransitioning The ability to transition from a line to an arc, or vice versa, without selecting the Arc tool. 505434bgloss.indd 570 1/26/10 2:50:15 PM Glossary 571 B base feature The first feature listed in the FeatureManager design tree. bidirectionality The ability for information to be updated in a component’s custom properties when a bill of materials is updated, or vice versa. blind hole A hole that has its depth specified by a numerical value rather than referencing geometry in the part. boss A feature that protrudes from a model. bottom-up design A design strategy where the individual parts of an assembly are modeled and then put together to create an assembly. box selection A selection method used in parts, assemblies, and drawings to select entities by dragging a selection box with the mouse pointer. Dragging from left to right will select all items that fall completely within the box. broken-out section A section view that is not created as a sepa- rate view in a drawing. Instead, a closed pro- file, usually a spline, is used to specify the section on an existing drawing view, and the depth is determined by a numerical value or by selecting geometry in a drawing view. buckets Squares seen while rendering an image in PhotoView 360. The number of buckets seen while rendering corresponds to the number of cores in the CPU that are working on the rendering. C center marks A cross in a drawing that marks the center of a circle or arc. Center Rectangle tool A sketch tool that sketches a rectangle with a center point. centerlines A type of line used to represent axes of a symmetrical part or feature in a drawing. Centerpoint Arc tool A sketch tool that creates an arc from a cen- terpoint, a start point, and an endpoint. chamfer A beveled edge connecting two surfaces or sketch entities. closed loop A selection set comprised of a set of contours that close upon themselves. closed spline profile A spline that has no break and closes upon itself. Coincident mate A mate tool used to make two selected enti- ties in parts of an assembly share the same point. collinear A geometric condition where two or more lines share the same orientation and direction. CommandManager A context-sensitive toolbar that usually is docked above the graphics area and dynami- cally updates to the appropriate toolbar based on the modeling environment and tab selected. concentric A geometric condition where two or more circles or arcs share the same center point. Concentric mate A mate tool used to specify that two selected circular edges or cylindrical faces are to share the same centerpoint or axis. configuration-specific properties User-defined custom properties that are applied only to specific variations of a part or assembly (configuration) within the same model. ConfigurationManager A pane usually on the left side of the graphics area that is used to create, select, and view multiple configurations of a part or assembly. confirmation corner A way to accept or cancel features or sketches in the upper-right corner of the graphics area. construction line A sketch entity that aids in the creation of other geometry without actually being part of the created geometry. context toolbar A toolbar that appears when selecting items in the graphics area or FeatureManager that provides access to the most common set of tools for the selected items. Corner Rectangle tool A sketch tool that creates a rectangle by specifying the two opposite corners. Corner Trim tool A trim tool that is used to modify two selected sketch entities to intersect at a virtual corner. cosmetic thread An annotation type that is used to represent the inner diameter of a threaded boss and the other diameter of a threaded hole and can include a hole callout in a drawing. CPU The central processing unit or processor for a computer. cross selection A selection method used in parts, assemblies, and drawings to select entities by dragging a selection box with the mouse pointer. Dragging from right to left will select all items that cross the box boundary. 505434bgloss.indd 572 1/26/10 2:50:15 PM Glossary 573 custom properties User-defined information such as the descrip- tion, part numbers, vendor name, and other rel- evant information that is added to a SolidWorks document that can be used in drawings, BOMs, and other areas of SolidWorks. Custom Properties tab A customizable tab in the task pane used to specify the values for a predetermined set of custom properties for the active document. Custom tab The tab of the Summary Information win- dow, which you can open by selecting File ➢ Properties, that enables the user to add custom properties to the active SolidWorks document. cut extrude An extrusion that is used to cut away mate- rial from the 3D model. D degrees of freedom The directions a part can freely move in 3D space. Three of the degrees consist of the translation in the directions of X, Y, and Z. The next three degrees consist of the rota- tion around the x-, y-, and z-axes. depth of field The distance in front of and behind the sub- ject that appears to be in focus. design intent How a model reacts as parameters are updated. An improperly defined part will not react as expected and can have a negative effect on the overall functionality of the model. Design Library A folder structure available on the Design Library tab used for storing reusable items such as parts, blocks, and annotations. detached drawing A drawing that can be opened and worked in without the model files being loaded into memory. With detached drawings, the model data does not need to be present in order to be opened since the information is embedded in the drawing. detailed view A portion of a view that is often shown in a larger scale than its parent view. It is used to show more detail than what can be seen in the parent scale. dimension (verb) To apply a dimension to specify the location of a point or feature in a drawing. dimension line A portion of a dimension used to indicate the extent and direction of a dimension. The dimension line, in mechanical applications, is terminated at both ends with an arrow- head and contains the dimension’s value. dimensions A numerical value used to specify the size, location, or geometric characteristic of a part or feature. 505434bgloss.indd 573 1/26/10 2:50:15 PM Glossary 574 DimXpert A set of tools available in parts that allow you to apply dimensions and tolerances to a 3D part per ASME Y14.41-2003 and ISO 16792:2006. The annotations added to the part can then be imported into drawing views. DimXpertManager A pane usually to the left of the graphics area that is used to list the tolerance features defined by the DimXpert for parts. display pane A portion of the FeatureManager design tree that can be expanded to view the various dis- play settings in parts, assemblies, and draw- ings. In parts and assemblies, the settings can also be changed in the display pane. document control A department in many organizations whose duties include the management of all docu- ments for a project or the entire organization. Many times, the document control department is responsible for the security, versions, visibil- ity, and controlled audit trail of a document. Document Properties tab The tab in the Options window that contains the settings for the active document. Document Recovery tab A tab in the task pane that will list recovered files after restarting SolidWorks if the previous instance was unexpectedly terminated. For files to be recovered, the autorecover option must be enabled in the system settings. document structure The relationship between parts, assemblies, and drawings in SolidWorks. document templates A part, assembly, or drawing document that includes user-defined parameters and that is used in the creation of new documents. document types Documents that are used by a specific pro- gram. Types are determined by the exten- sion following the period in the filename. In SolidWorks, supported document types include parts (*.sldprt), assemblies (*.sldasm), and drawings (*.slddrw). Draft Analysis tool A tool available in the Mold Tools toolbar used to check for the correct application of draft to the faces of a part. draft angle The degree of taper or angle on a face of a part most commonly added to parts designed for injection molding and casting to facilitate the extraction from molds. drafting standards Drafting presets for detailing derived from one of the supported standards including ANSI, ISO, DIN, JIS, BSI, GOST, and GB. drag handle A point on a sketch or feature that can be selected and dragged to create or edit an extrusion. 505434bgloss.indd 574 1/26/10 2:50:15 PM Glossary 575 drawing A 2D representation of a part or assembly often used to describe the manufacturing or assembly of components. drawing note Text on a drawing providing additional instructions for the manufacturing, prepa- ration, storage, or inspection of the part or assembly in the drawing. drawing template A template used for the creation of new draw- ings. See document templates. drawing views Views on a drawing used to represent various angles of a part or assembly. DXF Drawing Interchange Format or Drawing Exchange Format. This is a file format devel- oped by Autodesk to be used as a common file format between AutoCAD and other CAD programs including SolidWorks. E eDrawings An application developed by SolidWorks that allows both non-CAD and CAD users to view part, assembly, and drawing data. end condition Options found in the PropertyManager that determine how a feature extends. It includes Blind, Through All, Up To Vertex, Up To Surface, Offset From Surface, Up To Body, and Mid Plane. environment A spherical-encapsulating image that rotates in relation to a model. extension lines Also called projection lines, extension lines are the lines of a dimension that extend from a part that are used to indicate the locations on the part where the dimension applies. extrusion The result of a sketch that is linearly pro- jected to create a boss or a cut on a part. F feature A single shape that is used along with other features to create a part or assembly. All fea- tures are listed in the FeatureManager design tree, but not all features create geometry in the part. FeatureManager design tree The pane normally located to the left of the graphics area that lists the features used to create the active part, assembly, or drawing. File Explorer tab A tab on the task pane that duplicates the Windows Explorer functionality from the local PC and can be used to open recent documents, show files currently open in SolidWorks, and perform other common file management functions found in Windows. 505434bgloss.indd 575 1/26/10 2:50:15 PM Glossary 576 Fillet A rounded corner on a sketch or a rounded edge of a model. FilletXpert A utility with SolidWorks that manages, orga- nizes, and reorders constant radius fillets. filter bar A field at the top of the FeatureManager design tree that enables the user to search for specific features of a part or components in an assembly. first-angle projections A technique for creating orthographic pro- jections that places the object being drawn between the observer and the plane of projection. flagnotes A symbol used on drawing notes to call attention to a specific area of the drawing. The symbol is then used in the drawing, most often with the symbol attached to a leader or as part of the dimension being ref- erenced in the notes. flexible subassembly A subassembly that allows the movement of the individual components within the limita- tions of its mates while in an assembly. flip dimension To change the direction of a dimension. fully defined sketch A sketch that has all the line and curve sizes and positions fully described with dimensions or relations. Once fully defined, no part of the sketch can be modified with adjusting the relations or dimension values. G generated view A view, such as a detail or section view, that is based on an existing view in the drawing. graphics area The largest area of the SolidWorks window where parts, assemblies, and drawings are displayed. group boxes Boxes used the Property Builder application for grouping similar properties when design- ing a new tab layout. H Heads-up View toolbar A transparent bar located in the upper por- tion of the graphics area with the most common tools available for adjusting views including Zoom, Pan, Section, Predefined view, Appearances, and so on. helix A 3D curve defined by its pitch, revolutions, and height. A helix is most commonly used for creating springs or threads. Helix/Spiral tool The tool used to create a 3D helix or a 2D spi- ral. Help Customization option The option to define the type of dynamic help provided while using SolidWorks. The option is most often set the first time SolidWorks is installed but can be adjusted in the Tools window. hidden lines A line type used in 2D drafting to represent edges that cannot normally be seen in the view because they are obscured by other geometry. Hole Wizard A utility in SolidWorks that aids in the cre- ation of holes, counterbores, countersinks, tapped holes, and pipe-tapped holes. horizontal dimension A tool for the creation of a dimension that will be created only in the horizontal align- ment in relation to the drawing. horizontal ordinate dimension A dimension type with only a horizontal extension line and the value. hotspot A rectangle encompassing a title block created for title block management that highlights when the mouse pointer enters the boundary. hue One of the three elements of HSL (hue, satu- ration, and luminance), which is a method used to define a color. I in-context model A model created within an assembly with a sketch or feature related to another part in the assembly. inferencing A displayed relation in a sketch with visual cues such as a dotted line, icons next to the mouse pointer, and highlighted cues, such as what is seen when a midpoint is highlighted. inferencing line A dotted line shown while sketching between the mouse pointer and other entities in the sketch or geometry in the model. It’s used to display the possible relation between the two. injection molding A process of manufacturing plastic compo- nents by injecting molten plastic within a mold cavity. Instant3D Functionality that enables the user to quickly create and modify features in parts and assemblies by dragging the geometry and using on-screen rulers. Intersection Curve tool A tool that creates a sketch segment where a sketch plane and a selected face intersect. isometric view A graphical projection of a model in a draw- ing that displays the model with its x-, y-, and z-axes spaced 120° apart and with the vertical z-axis. 505434bgloss.indd 577 1/26/10 2:50:15 PM Glossary 578 L leader dimension A dimension shown with a leader and with an arrow pointing at the object being dimensioned. line fonts A term describing the display of a line in a drawing including its type and thickness. line types How a line is displayed in a drawing such as a solid line, dashed line, and so on. luminance One of the three elements of HSL (hue, satu- ration, and luminance), which is a method used to define a color. M mate A geometric relationship between compo- nents in an assembly. material The specified substance from which a part is intended to be made when manufactured. Mirror tool The tool used to create a copy of a selected fea- ture mirrored from a plane or selected face. mirroring The technique of creating copies of features in parts or sketch entities in sketches by mir- roring from planes, faces, or centerlines. model dimensions Dimensions inserted into a drawing that were used in the creation of the part model. Once inserted, the dimensions remain para- metric and when updated will affect the part geometry. models 3D geometry within a part or assembly file. N negative draft The display of a face when performing a draft analysis. A face that has negative draft has its angle as less than the negative reference angle in relation to the direction of pull. neutral plane The plane or face selected when specifying the direction of pull associated with the part draft. Normal To command A command that orientates a model to face the viewing plane.
