1. Team-building workshop The option to participate in next month’s two-day workshops on team building is offered to all new employees. The skills and techniques that are practiced are designed to increase your enjoyment of your job as well as your productivity, but former participants have reported that the greatest benefit is the solid friendships formed among the eight team members. Please contact the human resources office before 10 th of this month if you’re interested in participating. There will be two sessions: one on Thursday and Friday, the 15 th and 16 th , and the second on Monday and Tuesday, the 19 th and 20 th (twentieth) 2. E-Commerce Seminar Good evening, and welcome to the “Working the Web” seminar. My name is David Morrison and I’m vice-president of E-Connect, Inc. My colleague, Ms. Nishimura, who was scheduled to lead this evening’s introductory seminar, was unable to come due to an illness in her family, so she asked me to fill in for her. The two of us have been working closely together for the last few years helping small business owners like you who have little or no internet presence to expand their share of electronic market. And we specialize in working with business owners who don’t have a lot of hi-tech experience. My presentation will last about 30 minutes and afterwards you can ask all the questions you like. Then, if you’re still interested, you can sign up for the full workshop that begins next week. 3. Customer Service Training I’d like to start by welcoming you all to FLS. My name is George Stevens, and I’m the head of the customer service department here at our Bedford office. I’m responsible for the overall running of this section, and for the next three days, I’ll be taking you through all you need to know to become an effective customer service representative. Here at FLS we take our customers very seriously, and our goal is to give you all the skills you will need to be able to respond to customer needs. If you don’t understand at any time, please don’t hesitate to ask me. Ok, as today is your first day on the job, let’s start with a little activity to allow us all to get to know each other better. 4. Conference Attendance Before we start today’s meeting, I would like to check which of you will be able to attend the conference starting next Saturday. As you know I was planning to attend myself, but due to a clash with the shareholders’ meeting, I won’t be able to make both days of the conference. I would appreciate it if a couple of you could attend the conference and take notes on the three plenary discussions scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The presentations shouldn’t last more than about two hours. I realize that this is scheduled for a non-working day, so I would be open to arranging a swap for those people attending, allowing you to take a half-day off another day. If you are interested in this, please come and see me at the end of the meeting. Right, let’s move on to the first point of the day… 5. Guest Speaker Introduction We are very lucky to have a special guest at today’s meeting. Elvira Kaur is one of the top fashion designers in our London office. She joined us following her graduation from City College and she won the Herbert Award for young designers when she was just 19 years old. In two years, she went from being an apprentice to head of our design team and, in September, she became regional manager. We are sure that her imaginative creations will push sales for the coming year beyond our target which, as you all know, is our most ambitious yet. Elvira is here today to explain her designs for next year’s Spring/Summer fashion collection. Here is Elvira Kaur. 6. Point-of-sales System Like the former point-of-sales system that we had, the new point-of-sales system has a cash register and a screen. The main difference is that the new system can create a customer file and an inventory tracking system. The customer file helps us maintain current mailing lists. The inventory tracking system provides a much greater degree of accuracy. These are helpful features, but the most useful improvement is the self-training mode. New employees can learn how to operate the system very quickly using the self-training mode. 7. The present owners carried out some renovation work recently and put in a whole new bathroom and kitchen. They were careful to retain the charming character of the house, as I’m sure you’ll appreciate. When you go upstairs, you’ll see how cozy the bedroom is. The house is a bit small, but you could easily build an extension over the old garage. The property is in a very desirable location – just minutes away from the train station, a supermarket, and some restaurants. 9. Retirement Award Before you all get back to work, I have a short announcement to make. As some of you may know, Chuck Adams, the maintenance worker of this building for the last 25 years, is leaving us at the end of the month. As he’s been here longer than any of us and done a great job of keeping our offices in good condition over the years, I thought it would be a nice gesture if we got him something for his retirement. I’ll be collecting money over the next week, so if you want to contribute, then I’ll put it towards a gift certificate. And don’t go mentioning this to him; remember, it’s meant to be a surprise. . make.
