The issue of recognition of same-sex marriage is always an extremely sensitive issue not in Vietnam and around the world There are still many people who have

negative opinions about the LGBT community, which makes recognizing same-sex

marriage in Vietnam even more difficult Understanding this psychology, in 2022,

the Institute for Social, Economic and Environmental Studies GSEE) and the ICS

Center have launched the "Marriage Without Stereotype" campaign, to create more

discussions about the issue of same-sex marriage in society and may create

discussions about amending the law in the future This study investigates what

factors make for an effective communication campaign and evaluates audience

opinions and attitudes about same-sex marriage through the campaign

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

Chapter | is the opening chapter of the problem, which introduces the research topic, sets out the theoretical foundations, and clearly defines the objectives and scope of the research throughout the topic

1.1 Background

There are many stories telling about the triumph of love and marriage over differences in family, culture, and economy But the truth tells us that gender differences are insurmountable The issue of recognizing same-sex marriage has always been a highly sensitive issue not only in Vietnam but also around the world, even in developed countries, causing many debates with many different opinions on the attitudes of society and the state towards these people

As society becomes more open, no longer imposing gender stereotype on the LGBT community, it will promote the trend of non- stereotypical marriage Many homosexuals now wish to have their marriages legally recognized Same-sex couples aspire to the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual couples The freedom to choose gender identity 1s also a right for every person, so recognizing same-sex marriage would further diversify the marriage model

As of 2023, 34 countries have so far recognized and legalized same-sex marriage Sadly, Vietnam has not yet been able to recognize this issue (Hoa, 2023) Under the 2014 Marriage Law that abolished the prohibition on marriage between same-sex persons, but they are not recognized by the state (Hoa, 2023), there is no Vietnamese legal document recognizing same-sex marriage Because of these, it is easy to create social prejudices against homosexuals

Marriage is a very legitimate need for everyone, including homosexuals Understanding this mentality, arccoding to the Institute for Studies of Society, Economics and Environment (GGSEE) and the ICS Center have launched the campaign "Marriage without streotype" (Chau, 2022), to stimulate discussions about same-sex marriage in society, which can generate discussions about future law amendments

In recent years, there have been many topics or articles of the authors that only stop at addressing aspects of same-sex marriage, but there have been no scientific studies evaluating programs, organizers, advocating for same-sex marriage, removing gender stereotype in legal marriage Therefore, for the above reasons, to have an objective view based on scientific arguments and contribute to clarifying those issues, I chose the topic Evaluate the effectiveness of communication of the

Trang 7

“Marriage Without Stereotype” campaign as my research topic to evaluate the effectiveness of campaign communication in changing the opinions and attitudes of the audience

1.2 Objective

This research was carried out to:

Objective 1: Find out the factors that create effective communication of the

"Marriage Without Stereotype" campaign

Objective 2: Assessing audience reactions to same-sex marriage in Vietnam through the "Marriage Without Stereotype” campaign

Research Questions:

Question 1: What factors make a communication campaign effective?

Question 2: What are the audience's opinions and attitudes towards same-sex marriage in Vietnam through the "Marriage Without Stereotype" campaign?

Trang 8

marriage to the audience From there, the campaign will affect same-sex marriage

The recognition of same-sex marriage helps normalize LGBT identity in society It fosters an environment where individuals feel more accepted, respected, and can openly express their relationships without fear of discrimination The legal recognition of same-sex marriage often leads to increasing acceptance and normalization of LGBT relationships in society

When society's opinions and attitudes are favorable, marriage is extremely easy

to accept From changing the perspective of marriage to untying gender stereotype

in legalizing marriage because no one universal pattern can be imposed on every matriage, any marriage can take on its own shape

And after this campaign, the opinions and attitudes of the audience are positive and they support same-sex marriage, then the result will be an effective communication campaign

Trang 9

Currently, in Vietnam, the Law on Marriage and Family amended in 2014 is that the state does not recognize marriage between people of the same sex Therefore, same-sex couples still face difficulties in legalizing marriage, which may affect the conduct of research and synthesis of results

Society still has people who have prejudices and preyudices about same-sex marriage, this may affect the way the research process is conducted

Conducting research requires careful planning to determine research objectives and methods, so it can take a lot of time

1.7 Significance of the Research

Research on changing opinions and attitudes about same-sex marriage through the campaign contributes to the development of social policies and strategies appropriate to the needs and rights of the LGBT community and society at large regarding same-sex marriage Over time, recognition of same-sex marriage has the potential to contribute to a more inclusive and diverse society

The results of this research can be seen as contributing to the basis for same-sex marriage in Vietnam

Trang 11

CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW

In the second chapter, the writer will research the overview of communication,

as well as the ways in which the media and methods have effectively communicated

to the public, especially to study the communication effectiveness of the “Marriage Without Stereotype” campaign

2.1 Media overview:

2.1.1 The concept of communication

Communication is the process of transmitting information and news between two or more people to communicate, connect, increase understanding and awareness (thaotam, 2022) Or it can be understood that communication is the products created by man, the real driving force for the development of society Every day, the world is always changing, updating with new information, making us constantly search, exchange information with friends, family , follow daily news on the media today such as Facebook, television, newspapers, And this is the result of the important role of communication in helping us understand each other, know each other, as well as connect with each other more strongly in this time Communication has become a popular concept, playing a huge role in spreading information and advertising

As Dean C Barnlund, a British media researcher, puts it: " Communication is a continuous process of reducing ambiguity so that more effective behavior can be taken” (Hoai, 2023)

Some scholars of communication argue that it is the process of exchanging thoughts or ideas through language But there are also other opinions that see it as

an ongoing process, helping us understand others and vice versa tis a process that is flexible, ever-changing and adapts to specific environments and circumstances

(Hoai, 2023)

2.1.2 The role and power of communication to the public

Media plays an extremely important and urgent role in transmitting information and communicating with many audiences and businesses (Hoc vién Quan ly PACE, 2022) Must ensure that everyone is updated with complete and accurate information Media helps the public access the latest information, of course including diversity and richness in many fields such as education, economics, politics, science, culture and art

Trang 12

Media has great power, helping people know what has been happening in life, but as an indispensable part in providing new knowledge, information about life, Law comes to people (thaotam, 2022)

In addition, for things that society is currently facing difficulties in, that have not been done, and that do not have a voice in the community, the media will help with these things, they will take on an important role in building and change community awareness of social and environmental issues Media can influence public behavior and opinions through various media such as newspapers, television, radio, social networks, and other communication channels

2.1.3 Today's popular media

2.1.3.1 Social Media:

According to current statistics, the number of social network users worldwide has increased to 4.9 billion people It's obvious that Social Media is definitely an important tool for the public Because social networks are a place for people to send their stories and shares to people around them in life In addition, social networks are also where businesses build communication channels, at a high level Using such a record, businesses rely on social networks to increase brand awareness, reach and attract customers through social networking sites such as Tiktok, Facebook, Youtube

Tiktok: This application is different from the other two applications because TikTok has made a difference, a place where the community expresses its own identity through each video, attracting a large number of interested public because

of its features, create unique videos Through TikTok, influencers can be people hired by businesses to promote their brands The product is a video on TikTok Tiktok was born after other applications, launching in the world in September 2017 (Vui, 2021)

Facebook: No longer unfamiliar to the public, Facebook is a social networking channel that has been present since 2004 but did not develop widely until 2006 (Yén, 2023) It is a virtual bridge to connect people around the world, thanks to which businesses you can take advantage of and exploit many customers quickly and bring development to your business

Youtube: was born in 2006 (Hai, 2019), earlier than the previous two platforms, but it always brings users a variety of experiences with content from videos with many genres such as: entertainment, humor, music, movies to videos education, news, sports

Trang 13

Businesses today place great trust in using social media to build good relationships at work and otherwise At the same time, through it they can easily promote products or services, or post big promotions to customers, so that they can attract curiosity and attention In addition, a business that wants to be successful and develop well must always monitor and measure the results of campaigns to be effective

A huge advantage for businesses, when they can provide advertisements to many customer groups easily, just through distributing advertisements on social networking platforms, to helps save costs as well as gain an advantage in the market Through social networks, businesses can also provide information to users, while gathering information, understanding the market, customer trends and building communities

2.1.3.2 News:

Journalism is a form of information about events and issues in social life presented in writing, images, sounds, published periodically and distributed, transmitted to the masses through forms as print media, audio media, video media, and electronic media (Hoc vién Quan ly PACE, 2022)

Although newspapers have been present in the world for a long time, up to this point, newspapers are still a popular means of communication that all subjects and all people are interested in every day, because it has High efficiency and cheap advertising costs compared to other media The level of press coverage to the public

is very large Most of the events that just happened immediately appeared in the press, causing the public to receive it very quickly In addition to social media, the press is considered a place that businesses trust to promote their campaigns and products

Therefore, to use the press effectively, businesses need to balance and moderate advertising and content, not overusing either one too much We should balance it For example, the content of the article needs to be summarized, stating the main ideas to hit the customer's psychology, make customers surprised about something,

in addition, you must choose newspaper templates with designs that are attractive and responsive Meet the needs of readers, at the same time advertising needs to be

in the right place and not have too many details so as not to lose the value of the article

2.1.4 Methods for evaluating communication effectiveness

According to MatBao (Matbao, 2019), the method of evaluating the effectiveness of communication can be done using the following 4 indicators:

Trang 14

The First is the Sentiment Score It is determined by the method of evaluating communication effectiveness by analyzing emotions from customer interaction comments And this way helps businesses evaluate the positives and negatives coming from consumers

The second is the UGC - User Generated Content UGC are articles shared by customers on community forums or social networking sites Only products or brands that truly resonate with consumers can achieve high UGC scores

The third is the Audience Scale It is an indicator of the number of customers attracted by the communication strategy The high media effectiveness index shows that media content is attractive, unique, attractive to customers and is being used in appropriate media

The last is the Object Mention In addition to the sentiment index, user comment index, user engagement index, the discussion index related to the campaign is an important indicator to evaluate the level of communication effectiveness

2.2 Gender stereotype imposed on the LGBT community:

2.2.1 About the LGBT community

The LGBT community is a community of people with a different sexual orientation and gender identity than people with a normal sexual orientation and gender identity This community includes many other small groups such as the Les community, the Gay community, or the transgender community (Hoa, 2023) 2.2.2 The Concept of Gender Stereotype

Gender stereotype are understood as simple generalizations about the characteristics, personalities, roles, of individuals or groups of people based on their gender (Chau, 2021) For example, when it comes to men, they will always assume that men must be strong, men must be the breadwinners of the family, and women must be gentle, charming, gentle, and know to cook, giving birth Stereotypes can also be responsible roles "men build houses, women build homes", "men are breadwinners"; Women have the vocation to be mothers, wives, "good at housework" Stereotype can also be of roles of responsibility "men build houses, women build homes", "men are pillars"; Women have the vocation of motherhood, wifehood, "good at domestic chores"

The above stereotypes are concepts and requirements that perhaps all of us have heard and been taught, and have even been deeply ingrained in the subconscious of many generations However, in today's modern society, some of these gender norms

Trang 15

and stereotypes are no longer appropriate, and sometimes even put pressure on many people

When gender stereotypes appear, there will always be negative and biased perceptions, attitudes and assessments about men or women Gender stereotypes tend to be biased, less positive, sometimes even negative, leading to unprofessional opinions and assessments of what individual men or women can do, need to do or should do

Prejudice and gender stereotypes are related to each other and come from society's perceptions and expectations All are causes of gender inequality

2.2.3 Stories between stereotype and reality

Prejudicial "boxes" do not only affect the personal freedom of heterosexual people (those who are attracted to the other gender) (Linh, 2018) It has an even greater impact on LGBT people, because we are programmed from a young age to believe that “men must be like this, women must be like that" But in reality, we have billions of ways to do it

The image of LGBT people in the mass media is becoming more and more positive, although still extremely limited and confined to narrow stereotype What

we see in newspapers and television is mostly LGBT people working in the entertainment industry, with very specific personalities entertainment industry While it is an obvious fact that the LGBT community around us is comprised of many individuals from all backgrounds, personality types, and active in all kinds of professions

Here are some common stereotypes about LGBT people:

Table 2.2.1: Stereotype and reality

There are lesbians who wear their hair long, walk the way they want, and there is no

shortage of heterosexual girlfriends who wear

their own way

All gay men groom, dress

appearance

The word "all" is dangerous! Some dress the way they think is “beautiful,” but not all

Trang 16

Lesbians are girls who don't Thats right! They don't like men who are like men prejudiced and disrespectful of diversity Gay people often work as Th h it still t do all sorts of

Homosexuals tend to want Many homosexuals are comfortable with their

5 ụ „ biological bodies and have no desire for

Bisexuals are unfaithful They like both sexes, but doesn't that mean people they're dating two people at the same time?

2.3 Same-sex marriage in Vietnam:

2.3.1 Current situation of same-sex marriage in Vietnam

In Vietnam today, according to iSEE data, there are about 1.65 million gay people between the ages of 15 and 59, accounting for 3-5% of the population (Nguyén, 2013) Although the 2014 law on family marriage has been passed by the National Assembly and took effect since January 1, 2015 (Hoa, 2023) There is still

no recognition of same-sex marriage, nor is there a legal provision to address the legal issues arising between cohabitation between people of the same sex

2.3.2 Reasons in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage

Those who support the right of same-sex couples to recognize common marriage are those who have access to correct information about gay people and the LGBT community in general Thanks to that, they do not have a discriminatory attitude and show sympathy for the difficulties that same-sex couples encounter in

Trang 17

life To sympathize with this, they have learned and learned through quite a variety

of information channels: from the sharing of relatives and friends to the sex education section in newspapers, television shows, information on social networks They are generally open, tolerant people who value love and respect (Hoa, 2023) Reasons in favor include:

Same-sex couples are also human beings, they should have the same right to have their marriage recognized as any other heterosexual couple

Legalizing same-sex marriage will ensure rights in related issues such as divorce, both parties will not lose their rights in marriage

The biggest thing when legalizing same-sex marriage will be to help same-sex couples be accepted by their families and society, thereby helping them have a more positive life and contribute to society

First, it comes from psychophysiological factors from homosexuals themselves People with a homosexual orientation, they themselves cannot control their emotions, because sexual orientation appears very naturally and dominates their psychology and behavior Homosexuals, in fact, love each other and have compatible sexual orientations and they also aspire to live together as husband and wife People with a same-sex sexual orientation themselves, they only love and vibrate before people of the same sex As for heterosexual people, to them, they will

be apathetic and insensitive

Second, stemming from core human values, human rights are a sacred right and are recognized and protected by law in legal documents According to paragraph 1

of the French Universal Declaration of Human and Civil Rights: "Men are born free and equal in rights and must always be free and equal in rights." (Hai, 2015) or as the American Declaration of Independence of 1776 affirmed: "All men are created equal Give them rights that no one can infringe; Among these rights are the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." (Hai, 2015) In terms of human rights, related civil rights, homosexuals also have the right to live, the right to pursue happiness Human rights are characterized by universality, inalienability, indivisibility, and interdependence

2.3.3 Same-sex marriage in Vietnam should be recognized

The 1992 Constitution, Article 52, states that " All citizens are equal before the law” (Nhung, 2022) This means that the law neither recognizes nor permits any discrimination because of an individual's sex or sexual orientation A homosexual

Trang 18

person is a normal person like every other citizen in society, capable of fulfilling obligations and enjoying equal rights like everyone else

The state, society and family must respect the human rights of gay people Therefore, the ban on marriage between people of the same sex should be abolished Marriage is a connection between people As long as two souls are in harmony and willingly bonded with sincerity, any differences in gender, background, economics

or culture cannot be a pattern that hinders anyone's happiness Because any marriage can form on its own The ban on marriage may continue to lead to discrimination, making them more likely to have negative thoughts or actions towards themselves, their family and society

The recognition of same-sex marriage also contributes to resolving conflicts and coordinating relationships that arise during de facto cohabitation such as marriage (Luom, 2021) Because of this de facto process of cohabitation, although not officially recognized by law, there arises property relations that are no different from those for traditional opposite-sex couples: it is the arising of the division of labor, the common use, joint investment of assets These connections are the legitimate basis for the recognition of the property rights of cohabitants as in marriages And the recognition of same-sex marriage is a prerequisite for these rights to be recognized

The recognition of same-sex marriage also contributes to strengthening the personal relationship between people of the same sex living together as marriage such as the right to represent each other, the right to be the natural representation under the law when one of the partners loses civil act capacity, the right to inherit property at law in case either person does not leave a will, (Luom, 2021) Especially the right of children to be adopted as common children of two people in representation and inheritance, by both of them This strengthening of relationships helps people of the same sex living together as marriages to build a stable family environment suitable for raising children and creating a stable long-

term family life

2.4 — Factors that influence the opinions and attitudes of society:

2.4.1 Misconceptions about homosexuality

Perhaps, one of the reasons leading to not legalizing same-sex marriage is the lack of understanding about homosexual trends in Vietnam, which is even misleading

According to the results of iSEE's 2011 study on society's understanding of homosexuality in Hanoi, Ha Nam, Ho Chi Minh City and An Giang (Linh, 2018), a

Trang 19

Research Paper — Student: Nguyén Thi Hồng Nhung

large part of people have wrong knowledge about homosexuality or have negative attitudes about homosexuals as shown as follows

Table 1.5.1: Misconceptions about homosexuality

with homosexuals

Source: According to the results of iSEE research in 2011 on society's understanding of homosexuality in

Hanoi, Ha Nam, Ho Chi Minh City and An Giang

In fact, many in the LGBT community dare not believe in long-term relationships due to lack of recognition and protection The pressures from prejudiced families, from society and the legal prohibition on marriage make it difficult for homosexuals to have relationships

2.4.2 Opinions on same-sex marriage in terms of cultural traditions

Vietnam has always been known as a country with its own unique culture The ancient belief is that the result of true love is marriage and one of the factors to maintain family happiness is sex and children (Kién, 2023) And that relationship requires fidelity, loving care, reproduction, and parenting

From there, they expressed their view that same-sex relations of homosexuals are not natural, do not fulfill the meaning of the role of the family because the function of the family is to perform the maintenance of the seed pot, but homosexuals cannot perform that function Same-sex marriage as a normal phenomenon in society

2.4.3 Opinions on same-sex marriage in terms of society today

Currently, Vietnam's marriage and family law is still a law banning same-sex marriage (Hoa, 2023) Recently, a draft law on marriage and family has been introduced, including the issue of same-sex marriage in legal recognition This is an issue that has caused two different streams of debate, some argue that same-sex marriage should be seen as a normal activity and create justice for human society, others believe that same-sex marriage should not be recognized because it will have

a great impact on cultural lifestyles as well as security National politics

Trang 20

2.5 “Marriage Without Stereotype” campaign:

2.5.1 Introduction to the Institute for Studies of Society, Economics and Environment (iSEE) and ICS

In November 2008, the ICS group was launched as a project aimed at a positive image of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Vietnam by the Institute for Studies of Society, Economics and Environment (iSEE) (source: Wikipedia) Before 2008, the LGBT community in Vietnam was largely "invisible"” (PV, 2019) LGBT people face many challenges: discrimination by non-LGBT people, same-sex couples, and households headed by same-sex couples that do not qualify for the same legal protection that heterosexual couples enjoy, homosexuality

is often considered a taboo or goes against Vietnamese traditions, etc Clearly, raising awareness from society, the demand for services from the LGBT community and increasing the presence of the LGBT community has become extremely necessary

The research institute hopes to carry out the mission of empowering the LGBT community in Vietnam for pride and equality With diverse activities such as training, seminars, event organization, consulting services, capacity building courses and empowerment for the LGBT community in Vietnam, ICS hopes to empower the community to can speak up and advocate for their fair human rights ISEE advocates freedom, freedom to explore oneself and express oneself Without being identified by our own values, we will only see but never understand each other iSEE encourages people to express themselves, voice their opinions, connect, and contribute to society together iSEE works for social progress towards freedom, especially for marginalized or marginalized groups of people

2.5.2 About "Tôi Đồng Ý "

“Tôi Đồng Y” is a social media campaign initiated by the Institute for Studies

of Society, Economics and Environment (SEE) and ICS Center to call for Vietnamese support for same-sex marriage in the country The campaign was first held in 2013 in the context of the XIIIth National Assembly of Vietnam bringing up the issue of same-sex marriage (source: Wikipeida)

“Tôi Đồng Y” is a social campaign initiated by gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights organizations in Vietnam, aiming to mobilize support from Vietnamese society and people for same-sex marriage Every photo with the “Toi Đồng Y” logo, every video explaining why I Agree, every sharing of why I Agree is

a vote for marriage equality
