Create Great Drawings of Females Whether you are creating drawings of females, males, or even animals, there are a few things you need to consider. Women are softer and more delicate than men. I don't think many would disagree with that statement. When drawing them, you will want to keep that foremost in mind. As with drawing faces, good construction is a must. Once you have a good feel for the construction of the head, you can begin to focus on the more subtle details of creating drawings of females. The beauty of the face comes with the proper proportions first. Get those right and the following tips will be easy to implement. 1. Drawing Planes of the Face A man's face has heavier, more pronounced bone structures. Men's faces are more structured and rigid. When drawing a woman's head, leave these planes less pronounced. The skin seems to be one smooth plane with less bone structure visible. When drawing them, stressing this smoothness will not only make them more flattering, it will make your drawings of females look like females instead of butch males. . Use of Line This goes hand in hand with drawing the planes of the face. Varying the breadth and width of your line not only adds more dimension and aesthetic to your pieces, it helps you develop your own style. A good example of using line for impact is around the jaw line. Using a thicker line around the top of the jaw near the ear and tapering it as you get to the chin will suggest the structure of the face while allowing you to not "over draw" and get that rigid mannish look. Female faces don't show bone structure as heavily as male faces. 3. Delicate, Delicate, Delicate I cannot stress enough how the use of line and lack of line can make or break your pieces. When creating your drawings of females, all of the features should be simplified and minimal. This will add great effect as well as add to the delicate feel of the drawing. Drawing Eyes The eyes are the most expressive part of the face. When drawing them you can draw them a little bigger than if you were drawing a man's eyes. Its not a rule but it does tend to be common practice in commercial art especially. It also adds a nice "doe eyes" type of feel to the drawing which adds to the delicateness of the drawing.Click here for more info on how to draw eyes Cheekbone and Jaw Line The cheekbone and jaw line should not be stressed. If you have ever tried to draw a woman's face and it didn't quite come out as you were expecting, this is most likely the reason. Hard solid lines are your enemy when drawing females. If you don't use any other info on this page beside that one bit, your drawings will improve almost instantly. A good rule of thumb is, "When in doubt, leave it out." Tip: "But I have to draw that line of the cheek," you say? Women do have cheekbones after all. That is fine but think of how much line you would use to draw it and then cut that in half. Then you will be closer to drawing a great female face. Nose and Mouth When drawing mouths and noses follow the same mantra that is repeated over and over throughout this site: KEEP IT SIMPLE Keep the lines to a minimum. The better at using line you get, the more you will see how much of an impact this really makes on your drawings. Using line for effect took me some time to fully understand, but once I got it my drawings began to improve tenfold. In Closing Creating drawings of females can be very rewarding and satisfying if for no other reason than when you're done you will have a pretty girl to hang on your wall! The tips here will help you make that drawing a little more beautiful. If you look at commercial images of women in magazine or other illustrations, you will see for yourself the simplification of female features very well. Keeping it simple when drawing female forms will help you create your own style and aesthetic as well as improve your drawing skills. It will make you choose your lines more deliberately and consciously, making every mark you create more effective. That will add sophistication to your pieces and show that you have a concise vision that will gain your drawings more recognition and respect. We would love to hear what you think.
