ABSTRACT

TikTok is an application that allows someone to make or edit videos, and it has become increasingly popular in recent times, particularly among council scholars More and more scholars download this app and start shooting videos at their request, and anywhere differently People are beginning to argue that TikTok has had too many negative or positive effects on scholars' academic performance This exploration is grounded on the analysis of 108 responses to a check of K21 students at Hanoi University’s FMT department This study shows that TikTok

can have a huge impact on scholars’ academic performance

Trang 4

| Introduction TikTok is becoming an increasingly popular app for people of all ages Users can create and post any type of video in this app Undoubtedly, this app has appealed to many Gen Z people, especially college students in their aspiring adulthood In addition to having fun, students need to focus on their studies, and TikTok can be distracting, which poses a great challenge There are pros and cons that TikTok brings into our lives According to researchers, social networks allow for socializing, reconnecting with old friends, and sharing (Eroglu & Yildirim, 2017; Kirik, Arslan, Cetinkaya & Gul, 2015) On the other hand, recent data shows that social media disrupts people's daily lives, prevents them from fulfilling their responsibilities, and also harms their interpersonal relationships (Kuss & Griffiths, 2011) However, social media in general, and TikTok, in particular, play an important role in the everyday life of the students

Bearing that in mind, our paper analyzes how TikTok affects FMT students’ academic performance

particularly focusing on K21-FMT students at Hanoi University This research is based on our collected data randomly from our sample of 108 students From collecting, presenting, and analyzing based on Hypothesis Testing, we found out that most students believe that TikTok has a two-way effect on their academic performance From that, we show the research methodology, descriptive results, hypothesis testing, and evaluation in the paper Besides, we also give some recommendations to solve the existing issues faced by FMT students when they use TikTok from

the collected result

Il Research methodology 1 Population and sample

Our project aims to discover Tik Tok's influence on K21 students’ academic performance

Therefore we gathered data from HANU K21 students However, due to time constraints, conducting a survey and collecting data for the entire population is impossible, so a random sample of 108 students was chosen to perform the research

2 Questionnaire design An ideal method to gather data that we decided to utilize is an online questionnaire A questionnaire consisting of 3 main sections has been created to collect data

Section 1:

Trang 5

1 What is your name? *

Section 2:

If Yes,

Section 3: Depending on whether surveyees choose “Positively” or “Negatively”, a list of effects is shown for

surveyees to identify their scale of agreement There are 5 levels of agreement:

TikTok helps me organize my slides, templates, and presentation ideas better

Ican look for the questions (with visualized explanations) that haven’t been answered by the tutors

| absorb the lessons more easily through the information on some study tutorials on Tik

Tok

TikTok offers me assistance in terms of content that is related to my study

L usually get distracted while learning if I’m using Tik Tok by chance

| think using Tik Tok is time-consuming without any direct benefit My span of focus is shortened

There is too much content that can easily distract me from studying

Trang 6

The first section is to collect basic information of the surveyees, to identify whether the respondents are suitable for the survey or not The second section is to identify the time spent on Tiktok and

whether the effect of Tiktok, from the respondents’ point of view, is negative or positive Finally, to have a deep understanding of Tiktok’s positive and negative effects, a list of some possible effects is made for the respondents to evaluate their effectiveness on respondents’ academic

performances

3 Sample size

In terms of population, the larger the sample size, the more exact our results are However, the present population of K21 is too large to collect all of the data quickly As a result, a sample of 108 students has been chosen to work on Even though the example is small compared to the entire population, it is deemed enough and relevant to the testing and fulfillment of the paper's main

b Data collection The questionnaire was posted in a Google Form on the Facebook pages: “WE ARE HANUERS”, and “FMT - HANU OFFICIAL GROUP?” to reach the aim respondents Because filling out the

form just takes a few minutes, this was considered the most efficient and time-saving method of gathering information In just five days, enough data for the study has been collected

5 Data processing In this paper, the most popular method to distribute online questionnaires: Google Forms is used The data is put into Microsoft Excel after processing to calculate the relevant statistics and make graphics

6 Significance level of test

Trang 7

Considering the purpose of conducting the hypothesis, we decided to set the level of significance of this research at 5%

Ill Descriptive result and findings This section presents the findings from a poll that asked 108 HANU students about their opinions of Tik Tok's impact on their academic performance Figure 1 shows that the majority of students (81.8%) say they use TikTok, while only 18.2% of students say they haven't used the app yet

In general, the majority of FMT students use TikTok for entertainment such as creating, sharing, and exploring a variety of topics or seeking help with assignments through short videos

Percentage

Figure 1: Do you use TikTok? The second pie chart shows us the amount of time that students spend using TikTok every day As can be seen from the pie chart, FMT students spending 1-2 hours accounts for the highest proportion, at 36.1% of the total students in this survey whereas the figure for using more than 3 hours is significantly lower, at 16.7% The percentage of using TikTok for less than 1 hour and 2- 3 hours are quite similar, at 21.3% and 25.9% respectively

Figure 3: The impacts of TikTok on FMT students’ academic performance

Regarding the negative impact of TikTok on academic performance, as shown in the figure above, a significant percentage agree that they are often distracted while studying if they accidentally use Tiktok (70.3%) It is worth noting that 24.3% of the total students in the survey strongly agree with that In contrast to the above two numbers, a very small minority disagree and strongly disagree with the same percentage of 2.3%

Trang 9

Figure 4: “I usually get distracted while learning if I’m using Tik Tok by chance”

Turning to the opinion: “I think using Tik Tok is time-consuming without any direct benefit”,

of the 108 students who were questioned, the number of respondents who agree and strongly agree significantly accounts for 37.8% and 21.6% respectively while only 8.1% and 2.7% of students disagree and strongly disagree with that In addition, less than a third of the answers (29.7%) were

neutral

Overall, many people believe that TikTok can only be used as a little aid in their academic endeavors because it occasionally contains inaccurate information

Va

Figure 5: “I think using Tik Tok is time-consuming without any direct benefit” This chart describes the number of FMT students who expressed the opinion: “My span of focus is shortened” About two-fifths of them (41.9%) agree, 4 times as much as the rate of

disagreement (11.6%) In addition, 9.3% of people also strongly agree Because of the ever- swiping nature of that app, people's attention span has decreased Remarkably, the proportion of respondents having neutral answers is 37.2%

Figure 6: “My span of focus is shortened.”

The majority of answers agree and strongly agree that TikTok contains a lot of content distracting them from studying with 59.5% and 27% respectively When using TikTok, they might be given suggestions for additional videos Many people discover that while this helps them learn more, it also makes them want to watch more videos It is more difficult for them to focus on their schoolwork once they are sidetracked About one-tenth of people (10.8%) responded that they were neutral and the small remaining 2.7% said that they strongly disagree

Figure 7: “There is too much content that can easily distract me from studying” In terms of the positive impacts of TikTok, it can be seen that FMT students refer to many useful resources on this platform to organize their slides, templates, and presentation ideas better

7

Trang 11

Therefore, the proportion of agreement came atthe top position with 53.6% and the second highest one is strongly in agreement with 25% The neutral and strongly disagree answers accounted for 17.9% and 3.6% respectively

Figure 8: “Tik Tok helps me organize my slides, templates, presentation ideas better”

The survey results clearly show that students absorb lessons more easily through information about some tutorials on Tik Tok with half of the answers agreeing, and only just 3.6% of students strongly oppo to this view Normally, text-based textbooks are typically challenging for some individuals to comprehend However, because TikTok is a video platform, it helps students learn better by opening up new possibilities and alternative sources for acquiring knowledge In addition, a large percentage of respondents strongly agree, 25% and 17.9% for neutral answers

Trang 12

This chart illustrates the rate of FMT students giving their responses about the view: “I can look for the questions (with visualized explanation) that haven’t been answered by the tutors” The

most popular vote is the neutral answer (46.4%), which indicates that they are uncertain whether the inquiries they find on TikTok are more beneficial and precise than those they receive from other platforms On the other hand, many students found that there are many educational videos in many genres available on TikTok and they can quickly learn about classes, certification exams, language studies, and other classroom-related topics This showed that 25% and 14.3% of respondents agree and strongly agree with that view The remaining 10.7% and 3.6% disagreement and strong disagreement accounted for the fewest answers out of the total number of respondents

Figure 10: “I absorb the lessons more easily through the information on some study tutorials on Tik Tok”

The last question aims to know what students think of the idea: “Tiktok supports me with

content related to my field of study.” It can be easily seen that more than two-fifths of opinions (46.4%) agree and a quarter (25%) strongly agree with that view Therefore, it can be seen that on Tiktok, there are many academic topics and the materials of each lesson are described briefly, the content is easy to understand, which makes it easier for students to access On the contrary, a small number of all the interviewees (3.6%) believed that Tik Tok would not support them with content related to their studies The other (25%) have neutral answers

1 Research question This hypothesis testing aims to look for the impact of Tiktok on K21 FMT Hanu students Due to

that objective, we have collected answers to the question:” How do you think TikTok affects your academic performance?” to gain information randomly for our sample We ran through three

possible outcomes for this question: Positive, Neutral, and Negative 2 Assumption

The observations are drawn independently from the population

A simple random sample is selected by randomly choosing the 108 students from the Students’ List of K21 FMT students
