THE MUONIONALUSTA METEORITE

If you have been to Edinburgh, you may well have visited the1 Museum of Scotland On Level 1, you will have noticed an exhibit which has delighted visitors for a number of years.

Discovered in 2004, the Muonionalusta meteorite is believed to have become detached from a larger mass some 800,000 years ago After2 by scientists, it was discovered to consist of 8.5% nickel and 91.5% iron, making it extremely magnetic Initially, scientists believed that the material the meteorite is made of was unique, but further research has shown that it is similar to the material which forms the

there is one thing that would quite literally outshine all of these if it could be achieved:

a journey to the sun.

The sun is in fact a star, the only one visible to us during daylight hours

Essentially, it's a perfect sphere of glowing gases and the most vital energy source for life on Earth Not only do we rely on the sun to illuminate our world and crave its heat to keep us warm, but sunlight is also essential for photosynthesis in plants and the production of vitamin D in some animals, including humans.

Even small changes in the sun's activity can have serious consequences for the health of Planet Earth, which is why NASA scrutinises it continuously from a distance (When I say from a distance, I mean as close as we can get to something that is estimated to be 5,500°C on its surface!) 2 _ In effect, this was the first time in history that any spacecraft had touched the star.

But what if we went closer? Let's just imagine for a moment that we were going

to travel through the different layers of the sun We'd start with the corona Ironically perhaps, this layer is actually hotter than the 'surface' The corona extends between seven and ten million kilometres into space and blazes at a whopping one million degrees.

Next, we would get to the chromosphere, rings of gas suspended in an extremely powerful magnetic field The temperature here is still a significant 10,000°C.
