Nguyễn Diệu Linh - 2272202010168 HO CHI MINH CITY ABSTACT This study investigates the effect of YouTube on the vocabulary and writing skills of 2nd year English language students at Van Lang University. This study included three groups of research questions to investigate in an effort to find out how participants use YouTube to learn English, encourage participants to use English to improve, enhance vocabulary through video lectures on YouTube, and how to use words from English articles (BBC, VOA, etc.). This survey gathered online responses from second-year students. 58 participants responded to and shared their ideas on a table of 19 questions about improving their English through YouTube learning. After analyzing the data, we found that participants often lost focus and had difficulty in selecting information necessary for their studies. The study''''s findings also suggest that people frequently spend 1-2 hours studying on YouTube, that the lecture videos are usually of high quality, and that the information offered by the lecturers is simple to understand. Furthermore, we discovered that, despite the fact that there are lots of application options for searching for information, YouTube is the top choice of responders when looking for information to enhance their English. CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION Background of the study --- Page 2 --- The value of studying English is apparent in many aspects of life. Nowadays, universities in Vietnam want all of their students to develop good English skills, thus learning English helps students improve their performance in school, increase their knowledge, and expand their professional chances to connect with the world. When students learn a language, they must develop four skills in order to communicate successfully. First we listen, then we speak, then we read, and lastly we write, when we acquire our mother tongue. YouTube videos are an excellent teaching tool for language acquisition and cross-cultural learning. It is uncommon, particularly in higher education, to find popular YouTube videos utilized to assist students in developing their writing abilities. The essay discusses the advantages of using YouTube for writing tasks, both in and out of the classroom. A study of the literature on the use of YouTube videos in various language teaching contexts wraps up the research methodology. It''''s also critical to employ suggested research techniques, such as data analysis protocols and study instruments. The article ends with suggestions for additional study on the subject and restrictions on using YouTube videos. Writing in one''''s own tongue and a second language has long been regarded as the most difficult skill to master. Because writing is not a practical skill in the VLU learning setting and English is not their first language, writing presents the biggest obstacle for students. In reality, a huge majority of students'''' university writing issues get worse because they didn''''t get enough writing training or specialized instructional approaches and adaptations. It is anticipated that this year''''s sophomore English majors will find it difficult to communicate in a second language and to put their ideas into words. Moreover, Vietnamese teachers frequently find that writing is a skill that can be learned and taught, rather than an innate ability. Despite numerous research on writing skills in Vietnam, some students struggle to absorb the lessons acquired. To resolve this issue, they must create a solution that will allow us to correct the error or improve their writing skills. YouTube is one social network program that might help you enhance your vocabulary. This program creates an enormous amount of video capital in the Internet environment, enhancing both scholarly and interoperability. Aims of the study Writing is among the most difficult abilities to master. To make learning new English easy and efficient, we must develop several strategies and be well prepared. In the age of Internet 4.0, employing current English learning tools has become more common. YouTube is a well-known website where users may watch and upload videos. It also allows registered users to publish their own videos. You may watch a wide range of videos published by people from all backgrounds and across the world. Some examples are music videos, inexperienced movies, movie trailers, instructional videos, sports bloopers, movie trailers, and even entertaining video shot on tape. There are several options for you to choose from. This study aim to highlight the effect of growing one''''s vocabulary on one''''s ability to write in academic settings, approach publications more confidently, and connect with society. This study provides scholarly insights into successful language learning on the Internet by examining how university students take advantage of YouTube. Significance of the study The significance of studying the effect of YouTube lies in several reasons: For students: We are aware that YouTube videos can benefit students'''' English language learning in different ways. The purpose of this study was to determine whether university students'''' capacity to assist themselves when utilizing writing tools for writing assignments can be enhanced by watching YouTube videos. Through a comprehensive understanding of YouTube''''s multifaceted benefits for vocabulary enhancement, this study can provide help to students and the larger area of language education. For teachers: YouTube can help educators use more engaging, effective, and current ways. YouTube can use this program to generate online films about English classes while also helping teachers in understanding student psychology, identifying which areas of knowledge most students lack, and applying educational approaches to their lectures and courses. According to Monica Burn (2016), in addition to locating content, teachers can create their own YouTube channel to share videos and introduce students'''' work. YouTube is not just music videos and circus animal clips. It contains engaging, informative content at all levels. Some teachers said they use YouTube to review for students where they teach or advertise courses through free lectures. Furthermore, YouTube may assist teachers create vlogs, short movies on daily tasks, or knowledge summaries to encourage students to work harder to practice their skills. This also helps teachers'''' reputations grow on social media platforms, allowing them to make more money by instructing in these videos. For researcher: Language and YouTube help viewers from diverse cultures learn about other cultures, according to a number of studies and YouTube contributors.According to Ummi Kultsum (2022), With YouTube, people can also create videos to be uploaded to the YouTube website, which can be fun meaningful for students with the possibility of being endorsed and earn some income from the website if students create a channel and regularly upload videos that attract significant number of views. Researcher question This study is expected to answer the follow questions: What difficulties did students have in enhancing their vocabulary through YouTube videos? How have YouTube videos positively affected the vocabulary enhancement of VLU’2nd English majored students? How did they resolve the issues when they were enhancement their vocabulary on YouTube? --- Page 3 --- CHAPTER II. LITERATURE REVIEW Definition of keyterms Definition of enhance vocabulary Writing is an excellent instrument that may be utilized to achieve many different objectives. It gives us a way to stay in touch with our loved ones, friends, and coworkers even when we can''''t be in person. People use writing as a tool to record their experiences, create fictional worlds, share knowledge, and explore their identities. It also helps them deal with loneliness. Positive psychological and physiological impacts can truly result from writing about one''''s feelings and experiences. Writing is also an indispensable tool for learning. We use it to gather, preserve and transmit information widely. The permanence of writing makes ideas readily available for review and evaluation; its explicitness encourages establishing connections between ideas and its active nature fosters the exploration of unexamined assumptions (Applebee, 1984). Definiton of social media Social media technology has the potential to help facilitate social connectedness among older adults who otherwise might be physically or geographically isolated from family and friends. (C.J. Hutto,2015) It is the new in-thing, and one would imagine that everyone knows or understands what social media is. It is a fact that ninety percent of all online users use social media in some way or the other and may have been due to the pace of development in the social media arena or just plain lack of interest in the developments that makes it seem like social media jumped out of nowhere and took people by surprise. The emergence of social media was a turning point in the history of Internet, making the Internet technology all inclusive. where people were no longer silent spectators to the content being dished out to them. Now they could create their own content, share it with others, respond to people, collaborate with them and more. This user interaction is what gave impetus to the development of social media, as we know today. (Varinder Taprial,2012) Definition of YouTube After Google, YouTube is the second-biggest search engine. Every minute, approximately 100 hours of video are posted to YouTube. It is one of the most effective ways to reach a broad audience, whether for program marketing or educating children. One well-known website where users may upload, watch, and share videos is called YouTube. YouTube gives individuals, businesses, and organizations the ability to share videos with a worldwide audience. The website supports a wide variety of video formats, including tutorials, music videos, trailers, and videos.Create your own channel on YouTube to display your brand in a unique way. You may use this platform to provide valuable information that creates trust with potential customers and to demonstrate your products in action. A significant advantage of YouTube for businesses is that the more compelling material you produce on your channel, the more visibility it receives and the more traffic it generates. Related research Effect negative of Youtube on writing skill Advances in science and technology can certainly make it easier to acquire knowledge anytime and anywhere. The pattern of people''''s lives in terms of fulfilling information can change due to the rapid development of information technology (Machsun, 2018). One of them is YouTube, whose content can be used effectively as a teaching tool (Budiman, 2017). But behind the convenience and comfort that YouTube provides, there are some unfavorable impacts that can occur when learning English. According to Gumarpi Rahis Pasaribu, some respondents pointed out that the problem when accessing videos on YouTube.com is the advertisement that plays at the beginning of the video. It takes a few seconds for the video that the student wants to play. Some students also said that the problem they have when watching videos is that the explanation is too fast, and they cannot understand the main idea. In this case, the student''''s need to learn dialects can be considered. The problems of students include topic, content, subject, and trend. Slang and formal language are frequently used in YouTube videos, which may hinder learners'''' ability and accuracy. Distraction from unrelated information can also impede learning, and there is a lot of unrelated content on YouTube that is not helpful for learning English. This may have an impact on a student''''s capacity to correctly and ethically utilize English. Being sidetracked by unnecessary content can also impede learning. YouTube is full of videos that have nothing to do with learning English. Students who watch pointless media waste time and energy that could be used for learning. Furthermore, learning English through YouTube may make it more difficult for them to communicate with others. The majority of students spend much of their alone time on the home screen, obligingly taking in information without actively engaging with it. This can impede the improvement of a person''''s general English language ability, particularly in oral communication. The dependence on translation is the last negative impact to consider. Although translators can be a useful tool for students for understanding the content, they can also make it more difficult for them to speak and hear English. Spoken content might be neglected if students spend too much time on YouTube simply watching visual information and not enough time improving their learning and vocabulary. Effect positive of Youtube on writing skill Since YouTube is built on projects and repetition, it claims that you can learn on your own by watching videos and repeating.“The discussions on the YouTube video projects help to established students’ critical awareness and encourage students to learn deeper.” As seen as in the findings of Clifton and Man (2011). YouTube may help teach English language skills, especially writing, which is often the most challenging aspect of learning a second language

2.1 Effect negative of Youtube on writing skill
Advances in science and technology can certainly make it easier to acquire knowledgeanytime and anywhere The pattern of people's lives in terms of fulfilling informationcan change due to the rapid development of information technology (Machsun, 2018).One of them is YouTube, whose content can be used effectively as a teaching tool(Budiman, 2017) But behind the convenience and comfort that YouTube provides, thereare some unfavorable impacts that can occur when learning English

2.2 Effect positive of Youtube on writing skill
Since YouTube is built on projects and repetition, it claims that you can learn on yourown by watching videos and repeating.“The discussions on the YouTube video projectshelp to established students’ critical awareness and encourage students to learn deeper.”
As seen as in the findings of Clifton and Man (2011) YouTube may help teach Englishlanguage skills, especially writing, which is often the most challenging aspect oflearning a second language
Effective teaching techniques are essential for teaching writing skills Teachers can playfilms on YouTube that elucidate writing in the epidemic era Because YouTube can beaccessed anywhere at any time, it is incredibly convenient to utilize Moreover, studentsare free to go over it again whenever they choose until they fully grasp the content.Videos on YouTube can be used to explain the content Writing is the subject of one ofthe materials.According to Carlos A Mayora (2009) Youtube will promote writing, twoinstructional implementations were outlined: one for contexts in which there is easyaccess to the Internet and one for those which do not have such access Bothinstructional approaches attempt to integrate other abilities into writing while alsogiving learners with a more diverse and realistic audience than only the teacher
These behaviors also invoke other educational theory ideals, such as centeredness, collaborative learning, and learner autonomy Both pedagogicaltechniques are applicable to a wide range of circumstances, as well as learners withvarying linguistic competence and aims for learning English They are not intended to
learner-be rigorous procedures to follow or methods in the strictest sense, but rather educationalorientations that each teacher can and should adjust and adapt Once adapted andimplemented, teachers should do action research to assess their benefits and limitations
In reality, I based this concept on YouTube because it is so popular among mostlearners
2.3 Difficulties in developing writing skill
One of the most important issues affecting hundreds of students studying English as asecond or foreign language worldwide is the difficulty of writing They write poorly, receive low marks, make more errors, utilize unclear language, and create paragraphsthat are difficult to understand since they don't care about the organization
Although some of the strategies teachers use encourage their students to be creative andorganized, that is not enough Students must consider many aspects at the time ofwriting such as: vocabulary, mechanics, grammar, organization and content and not onlyone of these items because to create adequate compositions students must consider everysingle detail The problem is that they do not care about the kind of essays they arecreating, and they do not follow the correct steps that will provide all the sources for
Trang 11their compositions They just care about the grade they will receive at the end of ahomework assignment (Aragon, 2013).
Without a question, writing is a tool for idea generation and language systemconsolidation when used for interactive, communicative purposes As a result, itsuggests that ideas can be effectively communicated from an addresser to a recipientthrough text, and this infromation sharing can serve as a strong incentive for andpromote the growth of writing abilities Since writing is thought to be the most difficultand time-consuming language skill, students frequently find it difficult to write.Furthermore, writing calls for an in-depth knowledge of the target language It is acombination of various other talents, such as listening, reading, etc
Students rarely feel driven to write because of this The ability to be motivated isnecessary for learning any skill One of the main causes of Arab student’s poor grades
on writing projects is a lack of motivation Bacha (2002) suggested that it might be sincethe students are not motivated to develop their writing and that “L2 writers are known toface problems in developing their writing skills at the university level These problemsare even more accentuated with L1 Arabic non-native speakers of English in requiredEnglish composition courses” The students who always try their best to compose animpressive paragraph feel demotivated when they cannot achieve what is expected ofthem They are likely in a need of receiving proper instruction on how to compose aneffective text When they must write on different non-interesting topics in their exams inEnglish, their performance hardly reaches satisfactory level (Murshidi, 2014)
Trang 12CHAPTER III: METHODOLOGY
1 Research design
The goal of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the comprehension challengesthat Van Lang University second-year students have when writing The study used acombination of research methods to obtain data on the research problem An onlinequestionnaire was utilized to gather both qualitative and quantitative data For achievingthe research objectives, quantitative research approaches will be used The researcherdiscovered that gathering and validating the data was simple, so she created thequestionnaire Finding out more about second-year English major students' opinionsabout utilizing YouTube to enhance their language writing skills was the aim of the datagathering for this study Everyone who took part in the survey was asked to complete it
in good faith
