Social-networking sites and personality
Social networking sites are a great way to keep in touch with people and make new friends However, by using them, we also unintentionally reveal a lot about our personalities These sites are increasingly being studied by psychologists to gain (26) into people's personalities After years of research into how relationships in real life are formed, psychologists are finding that social networking sites provide a rich source of useful data It's possible to study (27) social networks and communication patterns in new ways
We no longer have to rely solely on people reporting how they feel about each (28) _ Messages and images on these sites act as open-ended stimuli (29) people react to in ways consistent with their personalities Psychologists have found enough evidence to be able to confirm that extroverts post more messages and photos on social-networking sites than introverts (30) _, introverts tend
to read messages, but not respond to them

In recent years, more and more people have been working to help the environment For Hollywood celebrities, being green and possessing environmentally friendly accessories is the latest trend Famous actors like Cameron Diaz, George Clooney and Brad Pitt have all become green
However, it's actress Daryl Hannah who is probably the best-known environmentalist in Hollywood She's been campaigning for environmental issues for years and has completely changed her way of life
The accomplished actress, writer, director and producer has made more than 40 films, and has appeared
with actors like Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks and John Malkovich She’s also worked with top directors such as Oliver Stone and Quentin Taratino However, although Daryl is a big Hollywood star, the usual luxuries are generally unimportant in her life She's more interested in looking after the world around her
It may seem idealistic, but she wants to save the planet
Unlike other big celebrities, Daryl has lived a simple life for many years and she's cut back on any unnecessary luxuries She doesn't own a private jet She doesn't even like flying, preferring to take the train whenever she can You might say that Daryl's weakness is her love of classic cars She has an old
'69 Buick Skylark and a Trans Am parked on her ranch However, she has no intention of using them
until they have been converted into environmentally friendly vehicles In the meantime, she's content to drive a truck that runs on biodiesel, and is planning to grow sunflowers on her farm so that she can produce her own biodiesel from the oil the plants produce She has the ambition of becoming totally self-sufficient, and it seems she's almost achieved her dream

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42
Madagascar is an island - the world’s fourth largest, at over 225,000 square miles - but an island nevertheless Although all islands have their own unique ecosystems, nature has blessed Madagascar with exceptional riches Roughly 90 percent of its flora and fauna is found nowhere else on the planet But its rare beauty hides the desperate situation of its people The typical Madagascan lives on about a dollar a day, even though you would not guess this from the attitude of the Malagasy, the island’s main ethnic
group, who are a cheerful and optimistic race Since the first humans arrived in Madagascar some 2,300
years ago, loggers and developers have destroyed nearly 90 per cent of the island’s original forest habitat, harvesting it for timber or burning it down to create room for crops and, more recently, cattle
Considering that Madagascar’s population is growing by three per cent a year, this tension between rich land and poor residents is increasing day by day In 2002 the global environmental community
rejoiced when green-friendly Marc Ravalomanana was elected president But only seven years later, in
the spring of 2009, the military replaced Ravalomanana with a former radio disc jockey who seemed to have little interest in protecting the environment
The locals are caught in a trap Poverty and the high value of rosewood - at $3,000 per cubic metre it
is ten times as valuable as oak - have driven them to cut down trees that are traditionally believed to be
sacred The rare hardwood trees are not the only casualties In order to transport the heavy rosewood logs downriver, rafts must be built from other wood For each raft the loggers cut down four or five lighter trees from near the riverside, causing the earth to erode and silt up the rivers At the same time animals’ natural habitat has been disturbed, putting their survival at risk
Trang 5In this bleak landscape what can bring hope? One man’s work may offer a possible route out of the darkness Olivier Behra who first came to Madagascar from France in 1987 believes that the only solution
is to give local people economic alternatives Almost single-handedly, he has stopped deforestation in the Vohimana forest by encouraging the locals instead to collect medicinal plants, which they never imagined had any monetary value, and sell them overseas to companies like Chanel The village lemur hunter has been retrained to act as a guide for tourists obsessed with lemurs The same tourists also pay to visit the wild orchid conservatory that Behra has set up Can small-scale and sensitive initiatives like this compete with the rosewood mafia of Madagascar? Only time will tell
