I INTRODUCTION

1.1 Reason for choosing the topic

According to the new general education program, the English subject was issued

by the Ministry of Education and Training along with Circular BGD&DT dated December 26, 2018 by the Minister of Education and Training English becomes a mandatory subject for students from grades 3 to 12, with English being an optional subject in grades 1 and 2 At the elementary level, English is a vital foundation that helps students develop basic communication skills, leading to greater knowledge, understanding, and application when they enter higher education levels

My experience teaching English to 4th-grade students has shown me that many students at my school are still struggling with speaking skills, which in turn hinders their ability to communicate effectively in English Although these students have a rich vocabulary and have mastered sentence patterns, they often struggle with communication The primary reason for this is the lack of opportunities for them to practice English in an immersive environment Additionally, English lessons at our school are not engaging or stimulating, resulting in boredom and monotony

Therefore, the teacher's teaching method is the deciding factor and the top priority To provide effective English lessons that attract students and create an environment for them to practice speaking skills, teachers must use creative, unique, strange, and attractive methods Based on my experience in the classroom teaching English to 4th-grade students over the past years, I have boldly applied

a number of flexible teaching organizational forms as shown in the research topic:

"Some experiences to improve speaking skills for students of grade 4 at Ngoc Son Primary School, Global Success program.”

This aims to provide a number of solutions and forms that I myself have and will continue to apply, helping to change the atmosphere in English lessons, creating a cultural and intellectual playground for students, building a spirit of solidarity within the group, especially creating an environment for students to express their passion, promote foreign language skills, and improve the quality of teaching and learning English in school

1.2 The purpose of research

Training children to develop learning habits and acquire listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills is a task that demands significant effort investment from teachers Although Vietnamese people's generally believe that without a strong command of the Vietnamese language, it becomes challenging difficult to

Trang 3

fully integrate into foreign languages But in reality, if understood simply, learning English in elementary school is just imitation, just like a child when starting to learn to speak If children have the ability to imitate well and add some sensitivity to absorb the teacher's language communication, they will not have to fear this subject As for teachers, they must always improve their knowledge and constantly learn, always persevering in training each individual student in the learning process, trying to invest in creating exciting lessons, giving them the feeling of "learning while playing, playing while learning", but still achieving high efficiency

Training English speaking skills for fourth-grade students is not just about becoming familiar with the language, but also about practicing speaking skills effectively both inside and outside the classroom Confidently presenting topics they love and excel at is a part of it, as well as communicating with foreigners in

an environment In addition, training children's speaking skills necessitates encouraging them to speak

The fact is that they have to boldly perform chants, songs, and plays in English Teachers must find the most flexible ways to help students remember and practice sentence structures every day, while also teaching them presentation and teamwork skills to improve their speaking abilities This for children That is also the research objective of the topic

1.3 The tasks and the objects of research

+ Learn about the physiological characteristics of elementary school students + Research English lessons at school and other schools

+ Test different measures to increase school students' interest in learning

English

+ Some experiences to develop English speaking skill for students of grade 4 at Ngoc Son Primary school, Ngoc Lac district, Thanh Hoa province

1.4 The methods of research

- Observational method: I personally research, study through documents, guide to

Through the internet, reference books on the psychology of elementary school students and methods of teaching elementary school students to draw experience for themselves

- Experimental method: I personally conduct some lessons according to the purpose and requirements of the lesson content, then draw advantages and disadvantages to overcome

Trang 4

- Method of investigation: I conduct some small interviews Ask for students to answer Practice speaking many times in learned situations, requiring students to speak English in all communication situations to test students' English speaking ability through lessons

1.5 The new points of experience initiative

II CONTENT OF THE EXPERIENCE INITIATIVE

2 1 Theoretical basis of the experience initiative

When it comes to English, people immediately think of it as a global language:

it is the official language of more than 53 countries and territories

International events, global organizations, etc also default to English as the language of communication In addition, English is spoken by more than 400 million people worldwide as a mother tongue, more than 1 billion people speak English as a second language, the developed countries all over the world use English fluently, or commonly used, taught as a subject in school

For Vietnam, a country that is standing before the era of development, opening

up to the door of globalization, learning English is therefore very important Learning and getting acquainted with a foreign language is not only about providing knowledge but also helping students to have good ability and confidence in communicating with friends but also with foreigners The four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing complement each other and help students achieve high efficiency in the learning process However, in order to communicate well, students must speak, listen and understand well Speaking skills play the most important role in language learning Most of the students today show that their speaking skills are still very weak, or in other words, students do not know how to memorize vocabulary and sentence patterns to achieve high efficiency in speaking skills

The problem is how we can overcome the above weaknesses in order to contribute to improving the quality of learning speaking skills, helping students

to be more confident in communicating with people

2.2 Situation issues before applying experience initiative

a Advantages

Ngoc Son is a commune located in the Northeast of Ngoc Lac district, 7km by

Trang 5

road from the district center The school board has always interested and create favorable conditions for facilities and profestional documents serve as teaching subjects: projector, television

- The majority of students love learning English and prepare books and supplies for learning

- Some students have a good sense of learning, are active and proactive in activities

- Many parents are concerned about their children's learning

- The teachers are experienced and well versed in the techniques used in the lessons, actively learning to explore new methods to help students learn better in lessons

- Under the direction and special attention of the Department of Education and Training and the Office of Education and Training, school leaders have developed specific long-term plans for teaching and learning in general and English in particular

b Disadvantages:

The number of students in a class is large, so in each class the teacher cannot guide pronunciation for each student Some students are still passive in acquiring knowledge and not active in educational activities

Although the primary school where I work is near the center of Ngoc Lac district, there are still not enough main classrooms, so the school does not have a separate room for English to serve good teaching Teaching facilities and equipment such as: cassette players, tapes, discs, projectors, etc., have been equipped but they are still lacking and of low quality

Many students are afraid to use language to communicate because they are afraid of making mistakes and being ridiculed by their friends Do not dare to boldly express personal views and opinions

According to the Ministry of Education's new program for 4th grade students, the amount of knowledge about vocabulary, sentences, and grammar topics in some lessons is still large and relatively difficult, sometimes making students not want to innovate Teaching methods are lively and effective, however, teachers are sometimes not flexible in innovating and applying appropriate and creative forms of teaching organization, so students sometimes feel bored

Many parents do not understand English so they cannot guide and help their children learn at home

2 3 The sollutions of implementation

2.3.1 Create an English speaking environment for students right in the classroom

This measure creates an environment and opportunity for students to practice and practice English:

- Teachers actively speak English during class, creating regular English listening and speaking reflexes for students In an English lesson, I always use 2/3 of the English language to teach and communicate with 4th grade students I apply from simple commands in the classroom to how to guide

- Teachers encourage students to speak English during class I always encourage students to speak English as much as possible, so that they have the habit of using English Always being gentle and patient with students' pronunciation mistakes will help them realize how to speak English correctly and have a positive attitude toward speaking English

2.3.2: Guide students to practice pronunciation regularly

The goal of the measure is to help students pronounce sounds, words, and sentences correctly, contributing to improving the process of practicing speaking skills

- Ask students to read aloud sounds, words containing sounds, and sentences with intonation many times It could be each individual sound, or words containing the sound being learned, or sentences, the teacher must ask students to read it over and over again so they can remember it Then the teacher calls the students to read aloud in front of the class to correct that student, and also for the rest of the class

Trang 7

to learn from their own experience

- Let students take examples of words containing the sounds they are learning and make sentences In textbooks when teaching phonics, there are always accompanying illustrations, which are words containing sounds and sentences that need to be read with the correct intonation However, in order for students to practice more, teachers need to ask students to take more words containing that sound from outside the textbook if they know it Another effective way is to ask students to make sentences with words containing the sounds they are learning

- Provide sound recognition exercises/tasks appropriate to students' abilities To help students remember the pronunciation of words, the teacher offers a number

of appropriate exercises/tasks

Type 1: Circle and find the word whose underlined part is pronounced

differently from the rest:

Correct answer: A Sister - the letter i in the word “sister” is pronounced /i/, the

remaining 3 words are pronounced /ai/

Type 2: Run and grab

The teacher writes or sticks two pairs of words with similar sounds on the board, reads one of the two words and students run quickly to the board to touch the correct word If they choose correctly, this student will continue reading the

next pair of words:

For example:

Type 3: Chinese Whispers

The teacher writes a syllable word that needs to be practiced for the students on

a piece of paper, then divides into teams and arranges the students to stand in rows Students will whisper into each other's ears the words the teacher writes down to the last person The team that is the last person to correctly write the word gets a point:

Trang 8

This measure enriches students' vocabulary, helping them have enough material

to practice speaking

- - Provide additional vocabulary for students in each lesson The vocabulary of 4th grade students is inherently limited So we teachers must expand students' vocabulary through each lesson The same topic in the textbook with 4 vocabulary words in each lesson can be used to teach students 2-3 more words depending on the receptive ability of each lesson

For example: Unit 5: Things we can do Lesson 1 (English 4 – Global success)

Words to teach: basketball, football, table tennis, badminton

The teacher uses pictures of the above words to teach the words: ride a bike, ride a horse, play the piano, play the guitar

In addition to the words in the textbook, teachers can expand the vocabulary

of the topic “Things we can do” by adding images of playing the violin and

teaching students

Play the violin

- Guide students to make their own dictionary at home: Right from the first

lessons, teachers can guide students to create their own dictionary at home

+ Dictionary written by letter: Students use a notebook or thick notebook to write down each letter according to the English alphabet For each letter you leave a certain number of pages blank Every day after English lessons, students memorize vocabulary and can write down all the words in each alphabetical system at home:

Trang 9

+ Dictionary written by topic: Students use a notebook or thick notebook to write down each topic or unit of study After returning home, the children

memorize and record the words in their dictionary according to the correct topic

2.3.4 Practice speaking skills using mind maps

Mind maps in learning to speak English can be said to be an effective tool for all types of students First of all, when guiding students to practice speaking, I often apply mind maps so that they can easily understand the topic and grasp the sentence patterns they are learning These mind maps are designed by me according to each topic of the lesson on Powerpoint software, and shown on a large TV screen and projector for students to see clearly and practice speaking

- Create mind maps for each lesson topic

- Modeling

- Guide students to practice speaking through mind maps

- Check students' speaking practice

Trang 10

Some pictures of students’ mind maps

2.3.5 Organize speaking practice activities in pairs and groups through

discussions or organizing learning games

Practicing speaking in pairs, groups and participating in learning games helps

students interact and communicate when practicing speaking, improving

collective spirit through games

- Practice speaking in pairs (pairwork)

Trang 11

Some pictures of students practicing speaking in pairs Before students practice new sentence patterns, teachers must always have a modeling step I often call on individual, good students to practice conversations

or sentence patterns with the teacher first, then call on slower students to repeat (Teacher – student)

Next, the teacher assigns practicing speaking conversations or sentence patterns to pairs of students sitting close together (close pairs) or far apart (open pairs), and the teacher walks around the classroom to assist

- Practice speaking in groups

Practicing speaking in groups is an extremely important activity in training and improving English speaking skills for elementary school students Students are divided into groups according to the goals of the speaking activity, which can be groups of 3-4-5 students
