CHAPTER 2 ASSIGNED TASKS AND METHODOLOGIES

My internship period lasted for 2 and half a month and during this time, I had a valuable opportunity to work as an administration and event management intern

2.1 TRANSLATION ACTIVITIES

Fortunately, I was assigned to translate chapter 11 from a book called “Teaching at Its Best” This is a part of the handbook that is a research-based resource for college instructors and I was asked to provide a translation for Vietnamese lecturers.

This chapter has a total of 13 pages and I spent 7 days translating from English to Vietnamese After submitting to my mentor, I received insightful feedback from him and spent 5 days to finalize and make appropriate adjustments to the chapter

Firstly, when I received this task, I took a look to quickly understand the concept and background of the chapter before translating it into the target language so that I can provide a coherent and comprehensible translation for readers

Next, I began to translate this book into the target language To optimize the efficacy of my translation, I have implemented certain knowledge and abilities pertaining to translating methodologies that I acquired in English-Vietnamese Translating Practice In order to provide the terminology that are most appropriate for the context, I also looked up some definitions in the Cambridge dictionary Although I had no trouble understanding the article, I initially believed that the translation was intended for undergraduates After submitting to my mentor, I was instructed to make the necessary corrections for a more suitable translation for the lecturer

Finally, I repeat the render step to correct the translation Next, I asked for feedback from my mentor to recheck and edit some minor mistakes After 12 days, I submitted the final translation to my mentor

2.2 ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

During my internship at Saigon ISB, I also perform various administrative tasks to support the efficient operation to the department

2.2.1 FILLING AND KEEPING DATA IN STORAGE

My administrative duty includes filing, copying and storing documents in their proper locations, such as online document management applications, filing cabinets Since it was the beginning of a new semester at Saigon ISB, I was asked to check and organizing freshmen’s and sophomores’ certificate and diploma Nevertheless, I also handed on the task of checking and updating lecturers’ diploma and contracts All the paperwork I updated on Google document and organized in a numerical order for my mentor as requested

2.2.2 MONITORING INTENSIVE ENGLISH CLASSES

One of my main tasks is supporting my mentor with keeping track of incentive English classes in the first few weeks The first task is keeping the attendant and teaching hour sheet of 13 classes updated every week I finish the task completely on Google document for my mentor easier to check

When all classes began to settle down, I received feedbacks from lecturers and sent to each student via email I also sorted out students who are absent over 7 days and reported back to my mentor Besides, during the internship, I also asked to help foreign lecturer at classes with setting up slideshow, microphone and projector

2.3 EVENT MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES

During the first weeks of my internship, I assisted with the Saigon ISB Orientation Week 2023 for the International Bachelor Program

Activities and events like "Opening Day" and "Prepare for your future with IELTS" are all part of Orientation Week I also participated in a number of talk shows that happen both during and

Trang 12

after orientation week, including "AI & Big Data Research: A Case Study from Korea," "Adapting to New Higher Education Environment," and "Saigon ISB talks."

Before each event takes place, I always arrived early to put up the necessary equipment for each event, such as the projector, microphone, attendance record, display of mementos, etc In addition,I also recorded attendance and organized sitting spot for attendees.During the event, I helped the MC and speaker during the event by carrying out crucial tasks including bringing the microphone, handling technical error, etc after the event, I made sure all the appliances were off and returned all the necessities

Trang 13

CHAPTER 3 INTERNSHIP RESULTS 3.1 KNOWLEDGE

The internship brought me an insight of how to translate properly in practical environment As the original text is in English and I was demanded to provide a Vietnamese translation, I could implement the communicative translation I learned in English-Vietnamese Translating Practice For example, I have a sentence that goes “If your only tool is a hammer, you’re opt to go around

treating everything as if it were a nail.” If I translate semantically, it would be long and unnatural as the following sentence: “Nếu công cụ duy nhất của bạn là chiếc búa, bạn có xu hướng coi mọi thứ như thể nó là một cái đinh” But if I translate communicatively, the sentence would sound shorter and natural as follows: “Nếu chỉ có mỗi búa trong tay thì mọi thứ xung quanh cứ như là một cái đinh” The original text was from a handbook so I use communicative translation for an easier and faster understanding

I also learned from my mistake that the key in translating is context since if the context is wrong, the translation will be very challenging for reader to comprehend Furthermore, a translating process might take a week to recheck and reviewing because just 1 or 2 attempts are not enough for the translation to be error-free All in all, my translating skill is sharpened up thanks to the task I was assigned

3.2 SOFT SKILLS

3.2.1 COMMUNICATION SKILL

This is the most improved soft skill during my internship; since my first year, my inability to socialize and greet new people has always been a weakness of mine But since my job at Saigon ISB requires me to interact with mentors, managers, team members as well as lecturers, I managed to partly address this issue by communicating with them and observing their manner as well as communicating style Overall, the internship period gave me a chance to engage real conversations

Trang 14

and by that, I learned how to talk with managers, deliver message and professional manner in the workplace

3.2.2 PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILL

Problem-solving skill plays an essential role in my internship Since the nature of my job is that problems can arise at any time so there are no such preparations beforehand For instance, a technical issue like a malfunctioning slideshow or a dead microphone battery could occur at any time during a performance Consequently, I had to learn how to swiftly identify the issue and break into components From then, I came up with solution to tackle the challenges related to those problems as soon as possible My experience as an intern has given me valuable insights into solving and controlling problem

3.2.3 TIME-MANAGEMENT

Tasks that I was assigned during period of internship requires me to learn to prioritize the tasks and try to deliver them on time Since each task has a detailed plan, each show has a detailed agenda, I had to finish it on time in order to not affect the whole project

One thing I also learned from this experience is everyone is disciplined and punctual in the workplace Everyone arrives at 7:30 AM in the morning, leaves at 5PM in the afternoon, and has a precise one-hour, thirty-minute break At first, I found it quite difficult to follow such tight

schedule, but I gradually force myself to do so and make a habit for waking up early and being on time As a result, I became more disciplined than I had previously been

3.3 RECOMMENDATION

After the internship, based on the spirit of goodwill I have some recommendations for Faculty of Foreign Languages in order to improve the quality of program

I suggest lecturers should adapt themselves an accent if possible because an accent will positively motivate and inspire learners more in paying attention to the lesson On certain courses

Trang 15

such as discourse analysis or translation theories, which the content is quite “academic” and “unappealing”, a strong accent will help lecturer appear more comprehensible and the lecture will be more interesting to follow Also, a wide range of accent will familiarize and help learners in selecting the accent that they wish to adapt the most

Furthermore, I think there should be another way to assess learners because there are some circumstances when some learners who have good performance during the test or group work but graded poorly because of a lazy teammate in their group I propose having another way to assess student based on their overall performance or provide an option when learners want to take the test with the examiner on speaking courses or do the groupwork alone

I, myself used to be struggle in deciding what is the right path for my future career, so I personally think there ought to be more talk shows that assist learners in selecting a career path The advantages of having a career path early is setting short-term goals for student to achieve in the near future By doing this they start working on self-improvement and avoid wasting time on pointless activities when they are still in the university
