Many students have studied English for 12 years but still cannot communicate fluently So what is the cause? Perhaps the reason lies in the fear of making mistakes, not being confident enough, and being afraid to speak Even though you have a wide range of vocabulary and solid structure, improving your speaking skills will still be difficult if you do not practice on a regular basis.

Currently, the world has more than 500 million native English speakers and nearly 2 billion people who speak English as a second language This shows that English communication has been used as the official language of more than 60 countries and territories By simply speaking English fluently, people can easily exchange information with the vast majority of global residents.

Furthermore, most of humanity's valuable knowledge treasures have been translated into English Therefore, possessing fluent English ability is the key to opening an endless treasure of knowledge waiting to be acquired.

With good English communication skills, students' other important soft skills will also improve such as:

In fact, students often suffer from time pressure because they have to balance schoolwork, part-time jobs, family, friends, and several other activities Therefore, arranging a fixed study schedule to enhance English-speaking abilities is very challenging

If students are not determined enough, it is easy to neglect to practice and forget the initial goals set in the process of practicing English speaking Therefore, motivation plays a huge role in learning language and developing students’ speaking and communication abilities in English

Besides, students are afraid to speak because they are terrified of making mistakes and being laughed at, and gradually become withdrawn during English lessons One study shows that anxiety can lead to anger and frustration – psychological states that are not at all beneficial to the learning process

2.2 The training environment is limited

The learning environment is also an equally important factor Currently, students only use English during mandatory classes, and are almost forgotten in other activities

But when it comes to learning a foreign language, if you don't use it for a while, it will “fall into oblivion” Learning English is not like other subjects, you don't just need to master the structure, vocabulary to be able to study well Daily practice is what we need But how to exercise effectively? In reality, students have few opportunities to practice speaking English in real, everyday situations, limiting where they can meet many English speakers and put what they have learned into practice.

3.1 Ineffective method of learning English

Learning a new language is all about practicing and practicing Many students are studying English ineffectively and not improving after years The main reason for that problem is that they use various methods of learning English but do not practice enough

There’s a common learning strategy called reading and rereading It’s relatively untaxing As the name suggests, it’s the process of reading over and over until the learners feel like the information has stuck The problem with this approach is how passive it is, the learners do not challenge themselves to actively recall the information to understand and remember it for a long time It can create a false sense of confidence since you have already read the information before and it would make you feel like you know it, but you do not actually.

Another book-learning method is spending all your time trying to learn grammar instead of practicing speaking and interacting with people in English Grammar is important as it helps us communicate clearly and understandably However, being obsessed with perfecting grammar in your textbook without using it in real-life talking situations will not help you become fluent in the language It will slow down your language reflexes and decrease the ability to have a natural conversation Imagine if you are in an emergency, will you worry about grammar or will you just want the other person to understand that you need help?

3.2 Lack of vocabulary in English communication

In English there are many synonyms, similar words or related words If you only study each vocabulary word individually, you will find it difficult to remember and easily forget the word you just learned Worse, once you remember the words, it is challenging for you to use them flexibly in communication Partly because the Vietnamese education system in the past often focused a lot on grammar and paid little attention to vocabulary development, leading to vocabulary learning often taking place individually, without context, making it harder for students to remember and apply to life.

For beginners, we often set a goal of being able to talk about certain topics or basic communication After learning to a specific level, you often have the thought that vocabulary is "enough", so you neglect learning vocabulary Besides, learning vocabulary is often considered boring and lacking in practical application.
