essential to boosting organizational performance in the twenty-first century Given how quickly the corporate environment is evolving, leadership presents challenges not just in leading a company but also in leading the environment Organizations have been more aware over the past several years of the critical need for leaders Therefore, leaders must constantly modify people, processes, structures, and technology One typical example of a successful leader in the entire world is Elon Musk - who was one of the first substantial investors in, as well as the CEO of, the electric automobile manufacturer Tesla and also co-founded the electronic payment company PayPal and SpaceX, which makes launch vehicles and spacecraft This analysis is narrowly concentrating on how Elon Musk employs his transformational leadership style in his prosperous enterprises The aim of the research is to observe Elon Musk’s transformational leadership in his companies The following parts of the report will discuss deeply in the normal transformational leadership and focus more detail on the way Musk uses these methods One big question the report has to make clear is how Musk can handle all of his big enterprises and make them thrive dramatically Ultimately, the research will have a discussion on the findings along with ending remarks SCOPE OF THE STUDY To clarify the effectiveness and the impacts of Elon Musk’s transformational leadership style, this research has analyzed the pros and cons of the basic transformational leadership styles and compared with Musk’s employees feelings to find out that the leadership style that Musk applies to his employees is successful The report also conveys literature review in leadership theories to define the transformational leadership styles The study ends with the impacts of Musk’s leadership performance in his enterprises AIMS AND OBJECTIVE The reports investigates the following objectives: To investigate how Elon Musk's leadership styles directed his employees To evaluate the significance of adopting a transformational leadership style in an organization's management To study the good point of this leadership style and avoid some errors Chapter 2: 2.1 LITERATURE REVIEW Theories used and similar researches: Leadership, as a topic, has experienced a dramatic increase in interest and theoretical research over recent years The complexities of practicing leadership have been demonstrated by a range of contrasting theories A single definition for the term 'leadership' is yet to be uniformly accepted by academics with more than 100 different definitions being identified (Rost, 1991) However, a common thread within all definitions is the notion of one's ability to manage and influence followers to achieve set goals in a specific situation Musk’s leadership behaviors coincide with each of Bennis and Nanus’ four strategies typically used by transformational leaders (1985, in Northouse, 2013) 2.1.1 Vision: There is no doubt that Musk has a vision He has a vision of a world that is no longer reliant on fossil fuels, is maximizing their use of green energy, and is exploring space and building colonies on Mars (Jacoby, 2011) This vision is attractive, simple, understandable, beneficial, and–quite literally–energy creating (Northouse, 2013, p 197) Even though to most people his vision is neither realistic nor believable, Musk has made it his mission to make it both 2.1.2 Social Architect: In many ways, Musk has inspired his employees In each of his ventures–including the development of the Tesla Model S electric car and the launch of the SpaceX Falcon launch vehicle–Musk has managed to “mobile people to accept a new group identity [and] a new philosophy” (Northouse, 2013, p.197) For Musk, that philosophy is maintaining unprecedented standards of excellence and clearing unforeseen paths of progress in nearly abandoned industries Dolly Singh recounts Musk’s address to his employees of SpaceX after the failure of the first launch attempt–a pivotal moment in which she recognized that “a failure in leadership would have destroyed us” (2013) However, in what Singh calls “the most impressive display of leadership that [she] had ever witnessed,” Musk encouraged and motivated his team with “fortitude and ferocity,” saying, “For my part, I will never give up and I mean never” (2013) 2.1.3 Trust: In this and similar situations, Musk continually earns the trust of his followers by “being predictable [and] reliable, even in situations that are uncertain” (Northouse, 2013, p.197) Time and again, when Tesla struggled through various crises of financial difficulty, Musk continued to fund the company out of his own pocket, ultimately investing over $100 million into the electric car company (Jacoby, 2011) It should be noted that research shows that transformational leadership is most effective in times of crises (PSU WC, 2015); as such, it is unsurprising that Musk’s transformational leadership strategies were most apparent in these uncertain situations 2.1.4 Creative deployment of self: Northouse notes that transformational leaders have a high “positive self-regard” and focus on “their strengths rather than dwelling on their weaknesses” (2013, p 197) Furthermore, they have a tendency to “immerse themselves in their tasks and the overarching goals of their organizations” (2013, p 197) Musk is known for not being shy about his capabilities–he speaks openly about his ability to learn complex topics, including rocket science, through reading books (Jacoby, 2011) Additionally, to compensate for areas of weakness, he sources experts–recruiting professionals who are top in their field and relying on them to the heavy lifting while still holding them to his standards of excellence in performance (Jacoby, 2011) Finally, in the way of immersion, Musk is known for sleeping very little and for throwing himself into projects with his team For example, when Tesla was in need of funding, he spent weeks on the ground with his team in an effort to fit his electric motor into a Smart car as a means of impressing the executives and ensuring their financial support (Jacoby, 2011) In spite of all this, the strongest distinguishing factor between Musk and his vision and the standard transformational leader is the reliance on ethical standards, values, and moral convictions Northouse speaks of one of the strengths of transformational leadership being its “strong emphasis on followers’ needs, values, and morals,” its attempt “to move people to higher standards of moral responsibility,” and its being “fundamentally morally uplifting” (2013, p 201) In fact, it is this quality that allows for distinction between transformational leaders and pseudo transformational leaders, such as Adolf Hitler and Jim Jones, who rely on “coercive uses of power” to enact changes (2013, p 201) As the saying goes, hindsight Document continues solidified until it is able to be analyzed as hindsight Considering the magnitude and rate of change he is initiating in various industries, a strong argument could be made on both sides 2.2 About Elon Musk Elon Musk - who had just got stuck in the scandal with Twitter in the purchase for 44 billion dollars recently The person that everyone knows as the richest person in the world right now He was born on June 28th, 1971 in South Africa He was known as a genius At age 12 he created a video game and sold it to a computer magazine After his parents divorced, he came to Canada to study and seek the greater economic opportunities available in the United States After founding his first company, Zip2, in 1995 and selling it for $307 million a few years later (with Musk netting $22 million), he went on to co-found online bank X.com in 1999—which merged with Confinity the following year to form PayPal, the online payment system was sold off three years later for $1.5 billion In 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company He serves as the company's CEO and Chief Engineer In 2004 he made a small investment in electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors, Inc.; his stake is now worth billions of dollars In 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company, of which he serves as CEO and Chief Engineer In 2004, he was an early investor in electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors, Inc (now Tesla, Inc.) He became its chairman and product architect, eventually assuming the position of CEO in 2008 In 2006 he helped create SolarCity - a solar energy company later acquired by Tesla that was renamed Tesla Energy In 2015, he co-founded OpenAI, a nonprofit research company promoting friendly AI One year later, Musk created Neuralink - which is trying to develop the brain–computer interfaces - and founded The Boring Company, a tunnel construction firm In the course of his illustrious career, as we mentioned before, Elon Musk has been recognized as the richest person in the world since 2021 Chapter 3: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 3.1 Qualitative Research 3.1.1 Observational methods Observation method is described as a method to observe and describe the behavior of a subject and it involves the basic technique of simply watching the phenomena until some hunch or insight is gained The term observational research is used to refer to several different types of non-experimental studies in which behavior is systematically observed and recorded The goal of observational research is to describe a variable or set of variables and establish the cause-and-effect relationship between them More generally, the goal is to obtain a snapshot of specific characteristics of an individual, group, or setting As described previously, observational research is non-experimental because nothing is manipulated or controlled, and as such we cannot arrive at causal conclusions using this approach The data that are collected in observational research studies are often qualitative in nature because it looks at data from all angles rather than relying on quantitative data, however, they may also be quantitative or both (mixed-methods) Many hypotheses are created through observation research, and by using different methods to collect data, such as surveys, interviews, physical observations of people or events Observation research is particularly useful when other techniques are impractical In an observation research project, data gathered through observation are incorporated into the research process Data can be collected through experiments, and from samples gathered through surveys and interviews The data collected by qualitative researchers is one of the most important aspects of their study and it directly affects the conclusions The quality of the data determines the quality of work produced by an observation research method Observation research can be applied to any situation where there are human beings interacting with one another in a social structure Traditionally, observational research methods have primarily been used in social and behavioral sciences, where they have been used extensively, most notably in anthropology, medicine, and sociology Since the 1990s, scholars who apply these methods for the study of politics have been at the forefront of political science’s quantitative revolution; however, those who apply these methods to study society and culture continue to dominate social science journals In contrast to many other research methods, the observation research method is not restricted to any specific area of study This is because there are so many different areas of study The above mentioned fields often use this method, but it can also be applied in the study of business, humanities, environmental studies and macroeconomics It can be used when studying public policy or private companies Observation research method is the most common means of gathering data, and can be applied to any situation that does not involve conducting experiments The most crucial step in an observation research study is correctly specifying how the different variables are related This task often entails identifying important causal mechanisms and determining when and how they occur The goal of an observation research project is to determine what happens under different conditions 3.2 Interviews An interview is a qualitative research method that relies on asking questions in order to collect data Interviews involve two or more people, one of whom is the interviewer asking the questions The purpose of the research interview is to explore the views, experiences, beliefs and/or motivations of individuals on specific matters (e.g factors that influence their attendance at the dentist) Qualitative methods, such as interviews, are believed to provide a 'deeper' understanding of social phenomena than would be obtained from purely quantitative methods, such as questionnaires The content of the interview should be carefully prepared in terms of content, on tactics to lead the story, making the conversation happen naturally and the respondents expressing their own views and moods The content obtained will be the opinions that help the interviewer to achieve qualitative results Interviews are, therefore, most appropriate where little is already known about the study phenomenon or where detailed insights are required from individual participants They are also particularly appropriate for exploring sensitive topics, where participants may not want to talk about such issues in a group environment The biggest advantage of the Interview Method is that it helps the interviewer discover new ideas The in-depth interview will help the interviewer identify the opinions of the interviewee, giving them a multi-dimensional view of different subjects These new ideas will be the basis for researchers to build a theoretical basis and expand for research This method is especially useful in qualitative research The interview method will also help the researcher to better define the research problem Through the shared knowledge in the process of implementing the interview method in scientific research, the researcher will have a better understanding of the research topic, thereby being able to clearly define the purposes of scientific research Interviews are a great research tool They allow us to gather rich information and draw more detailed conclusions than other research methods, taking into consideration nonverbal cues, off-the-cuff reactions, and emotional responses However, they can also be time-consuming and deceptively challenging to conduct properly Interview methods often take a long time to obtain a sample Having to sit down to ask and listen to opinions, and at the same time systematize the received answers into opinions often takes a lot of time for the researcher It is very difficult to prepare questions so that interviewees can understand and respond to new ideas for research On the other hand, questions should not be too personal or confusing Smaller sample sizes can cause their validity and reliability to suffer, and there is an inherent risk of interviewer effect arising from accidentally leading questions Chapter 4: FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS 4.1 Theory proposed: Transformational Leadership Style 4.1.1 Definition of Transformational Leadership Style: Transformational leadership is a leadership style in which leaders encourage, inspire and motivate employees to innovate and create change that will help grow and shape the future success of the company This is accomplished by setting an example at the executive level through a strong sense of corporate culture, employee ownership and independence in the workplace.transformational leadership can inspire workers to embrace change by fostering a company culture of accountability, ownership and workplace autonomy 4.1.2 Components of Transformational Leadership Style: Photo demonstrates components of Transformational Leadership Style 4.2 DEEP ANALYSIS OF ELON MUSK BEHAVIORS: 4.2.1 Elon Musk leadership in general - Vision: There is no doubt that Musk has a vision He has a vision of a world that is no longer reliant on fossil fuels, is maximizing their use of green energy, and is exploring space and building colonies on Mars (Jacoby, 2011) - Social Architect: In many ways, Musk has inspired his employees In each of his ventures–including the development of the Tesla Model S electric car and the launch of the SpaceX Falcon launch vehicle–Musk has managed to “mobile people to accept a new group identity [and] a new philosophy” (Northouse, 2013, p.197) However, in what Singh calls “the most impressive display of leadership that [she] had ever witnessed,” Musk encouraged and motivated his team with “fortitude and ferocity,” saying, “For my part, I will never give up and I mean never” (2013) - Trust: In this and similar situations, Musk continually earns the trust of his followers by “being predictable [and] reliable, even in situations that are uncertain” (Northouse, 2013, p.1 It should be noted that research shows that transformational leadership is most effective in times of crises (PSU WC, 2015); as such, it is unsurprising that Musk’s transformational leadership strategies were most apparent in these uncertain situations - Creative deployment of self: Northouse notes that transformational leaders have a high “positive self-regard” and focus on “their strengths rather than dwelling on their weaknesses” (2013, p 197) Furthermore, they have a tendency to “immerse themselves in their tasks and the overarching goals of their organizations” (2013, p 197) Musk is known for not being shy about his capabilities–he speaks openly about his ability to learn complex topics, including rocket science, through reading books (Jacoby, 2011) Additionally, to compensate for areas of weakness, he sources experts–recruiting professionals who are top in their field and relying on them to the heavy lifting while still holding them to his standards of excellence in performance (Jacoby, 2011) Finally, in the way of immersion, Musk is known for sleeping very little and for throwing himself into projects with his team 4.2.2 Analysis of components of Transformational Leadership Style through Elon Musk behaviors: 1.1.1.1 Individualized consideration: Transformational leadership also involves offering support and encouragement to individual followers In order to foster supportive relationships, transformational leaders keep lines of communication open so that followers feel free to share ideas and so that leaders can offer direct recognition of the unique contributions of each follower Feedback helps find solutions He believes it is essential to have a feedback loop where you're constantly looking to eliminate wrongdoings and create room for growth He insists employees provide continuous feedback as it's the single best piece of advice that could help in real-time and the future Source Hiring smart and adaptable employees “Hire great people This is 90 percent of the solution, as hiring wrong can cost you so much.” - Elon Musk Elon believes that the right set of people can not only cut down on unproductivity but also help in reaching your goals efficiently This explains why at times he is involved in the hiring process within the company 4.2.2.1 Idealized Influence: The transformational leader serves as a role model for followers Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate this individual and internalize his or her ideals As a transformational leader, Musk is also ranked as the most influential and innovative leader of the modern day due to his bold introduction of technological enhancements in the future Besides, he is credited with being the most vocal proponent of sustainable or green energy use with a long-term determination to introduce the concept within the automobile industry 4.2.2.2 Intellectual Stimulation: Transformational leaders not only challenge the status quo; they also encourage creativity among followers The leader encourages followers to explore new ways of doing things and new opportunities to learn From the case of Elon Musk, he always stays open to new ideas As a child, Musk had a passion for science fiction books and movies He read everything he could find about space travel and rocket technology At age 12, he wrote a computer program to calculate trajectories for rockets By age 14, he was designing rockets with paper and pencil Musk has a preternatural ability to see past the current trends and statuses to see what could be That openness allows him to work with his team in an atmosphere where there’s no such thing as a “bad idea.” Instead, he cultivates a spirit of open-mindedness to encourage sharing and the anticipation of the next great idea 4.2.2.3 Inspirational Motivation: Transformational leaders have a clear vision that they are able to articulate to followers These leaders are also able to help followers experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill these goals The former HR head at SpaceX, Dolly Singh, once said, “The thing that makes Elon Elon is his ability to make people believe in his vision.” Chasing the impossible is not everyone’s cup of tea Elon Musk has been known to the aforesaid, but the journey was never easy Facing challenges head-on, working relentlessly, inspiring people, and making them believe in his vision are some things that made him reach where he is Source He confidently trusts his instincts and intuition and the advice offered by his assistants Subsequently, Musk made informed decisions in his position of leadership and undertook individualized research that has facilitated his deeper conceptualization of situations before making final decisions of the best choice to take In the above incidence of the high prevalence of injuries, the most evident communication attribute is that he always sought ideas from team members to avoid faulty decisions in adverse situations In such an instance, he manifests an idealistic leadership trait that follows his dreams regardless of the perspective of his critics that offers conflicting ideals to their practicality 4.2.3 How employees think about Elon Musk leadership style: Leadership style of Elon Musk has always been a controversial topic, hence the opinions of his employees are also either positive or negative 4.2.3.1 About Intellectual Stimulation and Individualized Consideration: On the bright side, one former senior employee said that 90% of the time he did not agree with Musk, either because most of Elon Musk’s ideas are quite visionary and seemingly impossible or just because sometimes Musk sets "unrealistic long-term goals without any realistic blueprint for achieving them” But eventually, the aforementioned former senior realized that Musk was right, and he said that "I feel like I'm 10 times smarter than when I first joined Tesla," he said Regarding the thinking habits of Elon Musk, Mitchell Stephens, a former senior manufacturing engineer who worked at Tesla from 2010 to 2012 used to describe Elon Musk that "He's thinking outside of the box" Looking at his projects, it is not an exaggeration to claim that “Musk is nothing if not creative” (Dotcom Magazine) His projects are infamously notorious for being original and unexpected, which goes beyond everyone's expectation He was bringing back an interest in space and was promoting exciting and original projects that sound like something straight out of science fiction These projects are valid evidence to show that Musk has a unique capacity for creativity That is also the question that any entrepreneur should ask themselves before starting any projects: “How can you distinguish yourself from others?” Though he is super innovative in everything he does and always stays open to new ideas, it does not always mean that he gives others opportunities to such things On the one hand, from Elon Musk's perspective, he said that “Look even if you see something that might be totally irrelevant if you think there’s a tiny possibility that it could affect our success, please let me know” (CNBC) Besides, he even emphasized that he wants his employees to be afraid of what will happen if they stay silent rather than being afraid of what will happen if they speak up, and celebrate those who raise a potential threat or risk to their attention However, when it comes to the employees, it is not what they are thinking at all, yet quite the opposite is what surprises us Three former senior employees said Musk did not give his senior leadership team much autonomy and ownership to make decisions "I think the degree of autonomy that people have is almost zero," said one of the former employees "There's only one decision maker at Tesla, and that's Elon Musk," another former employee said And it is clear that Elon Musk wants his employees to be creative and open-minded but he doesn’t give them opportunities to make any decision So Musk worked to build an environment where employees feel empowered to voice their concerns, but at the same time, they did not feel the same and were given little to no autonomy to make decisions 4.2.3.2 About Idealized Influence and Inspirational Motivation: Though according to the definition, the transformational leader serves as a role model for followers Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate this individual and internalize his or her ideals But this is not the same with Elon Musk when two former senior employees said people were afraid to tell Musk that they disagreed with him "Because of the pressure he puts on his entire executive team, his senior leadership team, even if they had experience, they wouldn't dare speak out against him," said one former employee A leader positively influences and motivates his employees in the way that makes them feel safe to speak out against his ideas in their daily working environment 4.2.4 Advantages and Disadvantages regarding Elon Musk’s leadership style: 4.2.4.1 Advantages: a, Encourages changes: Elon Musk is good at emphasizing an inspiring new vision and circulating it to get people to buy into it To elaborate, he focuses on the positive impact of the change "for the greater good" and tells people how they can contribute to it In this way, it becomes much easier for employees to embrace the change or even enjoy it b Stimulating work environment: A positive and highly stimulated company culture could increase employee satisfaction; thus Increase productivity, and even result in employees’ greater development for themselves c Encourage high chance of success through highly risky decisions: Musk is not afraid to take risks His projects are extravagant and unexpected, but they did work There are others that might not work as well but this doesn’t mean that he is going to play it safe The higher the risks, the higher likelihood of them becoming unexpected success And one fact is that a business, in order to thrive these days, needs risks While not all of the risks are worth taking and have the results that you expect, without them, the business will be much more likely to become stagnant and fall behind compared with an increasingly competitive business world d United vision & clear common goals If the leaders are able to communicate his/her vision to employees to get everyone on board, it means that everyone is on the same page, which could lead to optimal performance as everyone is looking in the same direction because they can see the big picture and feel united in a common cause And it is clear that Elon Musk is a master of vision, just like the fact that his vision of getting to Mars was “crazy hard” and nearly impossible, but it was not entirely impossible The challenge eventually motivated scientists and engineers to figure out a way to it 1.1.1.1 Disadvantages: a Can be risky and disruptive The problem with change is that it becomes disruptive if it happens too frequently, and detrimental if the leader takes excessive or unnecessary risks If the leader fails to objectively assess whether this particular change at this time and for this organization is the appropriate response, it is more likely to produce negative outcomes b There is too much focus on the bigger picture Transformational leaders tend to overlook details, preferring instead to focus on the bigger picture There can also be a tendency to avoid administrative work, meaning that certain protocols or processes can be missed c Employee burnout While some will feel inspired by a transformational leader, others feel their presence as a constant pressure Transformational leaders put a lot of emphasis on authenticity – living and breathing the company culture and values This constant push to achieve the grand vision and to continually take pride in the company's achievements can lead to demotivation and burnout in some employees It sends the message that much more is required than simply turning up, doing a great job, and then going home 4.2.5 Elon Musk controversy as a leader: Overall, Elon Musk does things in his own way He is focused on what matters to him and he is not afraid to take risks, to innovate, to be creative, to make big plans This means that when his projects succeed, everyone’s attention is focused on them This also makes his projects different and appealing However, Musk is not just throwing extravagant ideas to see what happens; his projects are rooted in science and evidence These are just six lessons that any entrepreneur can learn from Elon Musk’s mindset and adopt for a better business practice Chapter 5: RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION 5.1 RECOMMENDATION Undeniably, Elon Musk is one of the most accomplished leaders of all time He can extraordinary things that not all leaders could From companies that were on the verge of bankruptcy, Elon Musk had brought them back to the race and accelerated to the destination of success such as Tesla, SpaceX and many other technology companies SolarCity, Neuralink or The Boring Company However, there are still many mixed opinions on this issue, it not only comes from the external perspective but also comes from internal the employees have/had been working with him They also had their displeasure in this great leader Therefore, there are still a few points that Elon Musk should consider changing to get more success Transformational leadership is a leadership style in which leaders encourage, inspire and motivate employees to innovate and create change that will help grow and shape the future success of the company Howere, Medlock - The ex-Tesla employee said that Elon “wasn’t social at all” That means he would rarely interact with his subordinates unless he needed to address a pressing issue It is unbelievable that a leader who leads such successful businesses often rarely communicates, exchanges and motivates employees Perhaps Elon Musk should be more "sociable" with his employees, for example, he should take the time to chat and ask employees how the work is going, if there are any difficulties for him to help or not This is the key for him to be able to approach and better understand his employees, then have the right directions or work to develop them as well as develop his company In addition, the way Elon Musk leads the team can be very successful and effective for some people, but in general, this creates pressure for all the employees he works with Look at the bright side, it boosts their productivity In contrast, some people feel pressure and scared of this billionaire An advice for him is that he should be more talkative, actively communicate with his employees, ask them and give advice or explanations if they're stuck This can help him close the gap and improve a comfortable workplace environment in the company
