Normative references 3.1 body Shell of the extinguisher not fitted with its accessories but fitted with all its welded pasts Welded steel bodies 5.1 Materials 5.1.1 The material used in the construction of the extinguisher bodies shall be weldable and shall contain a maximum of 0,25 % carbon, 0,05 % of sulfur and 0,05 % of phosphorus Before fabrication, the material shall have an elongation A greater than 16 % and a tensile strength R, 580 MPa Examples of suitable products are given in table I below Table Examples of steel Steel grades I Euronorm 130 : FePO1 130 : FePO2 130 : FePO3 130 : FePO4 25 : Fe 360-D I IS0 3574 : cR2 3574 : cR3 3574 : CR4 360 : Fe360-D 2604 T.4 : P26 I ~ Page EN 3-3: 1994 CEN EN*3-3 Au parts of the body and those welded to the body shall be made of mutually compatible materials.The ``,`-`-`,,`,,`,`,,` - ñiier materials shall be compatible with the steel to give welds with properties equivalent to those specified for the base material 94 W 3404589 0125294 T T T For austenitic steel bodies, the minimum thickness measured shall be greater than the minimum thickness calculated using the following formula: D S=-+K 600 5.1.2 The body manufacturer shall be capable of providing certificates of the chemical cast analysis of the steels that are supplied to him for the manufacture of the parts subjected to pressure Independent analyses shall be carried out on samples taken either from the semi-finished product as supplied to the body manufacturer, or from the body The manufacturer shall be capable of providing results from mechanical and metaiiurgical tests carried out on welds and a detailed description of the weldmg processes that are used during manufacture where 5.1.3 For bodies produced from austenitic steel the maximum carbon content shall be 0,03 % Type 304L is a suitable example 5.2.2 Marking of closures The main closures (covers, plugs, ) which are or may be subjected to pressure during normal use shall be indelibly marked to permit subsequent identincation 5.2 Parts subject to pressure 5.2.1 Minimum wall thickness The verification of the design of parts subject to pressure shall be by test deñned in this standard The body shall meet the requirements of the mechanical strength test (crushing test,see 6.2) and the bursting pressure (see 6.1) The body shall have a measured wall thickness greater than the minimum thickness calculated using the following f r n - l ~ D S=-+K 300 where S is the minimum thickness in mm; D is the external diameter of the body, or the largest external measurement normal to the longituàinaì axis in mm; is the coefficient with a value OE O,& for D 80 mm; O,% for D > 80 nun and I100 mm; 0,70 for D > 100 mm K S D K is the minimum thickness in mm; is the external diameter of the body, or the largest extemal measurement normal to the longitudinal curis in mm; is the coefficient,the value of which is 0,30 for diameters 100 mm This is subject to an absolute minimum thickness of O,ô4 mm, including all tolerances 5.3 Construction of bodies 5.3.1 General requirements On his own responsibili@, the manufacturer shall ensure that he has available the manufacturing means and processes suitable for fabricating the bodies in conformity with this standard The manufacturer shaJ ensure that the materials and components used in the fabrication of the body are free from any defect likely to impair the safe use of the extinguisher 5.3.2 Mounting The portable extinguisher shall be constructed so that it may be: - free-standmg on a horizontal surface; - and/or k e d to a vertical surface The shape of the base of the body is optional Bodies for extinguishers that may be free-standing shall either be fitted with a means to raise the pressure retaining part of the body at least mm above the horizontal surface or the thickness of metal in the pressure retaining part of the body in contact with the horizontal surface shall be at least 1,5 times the minimum wail thickness(es) (see 5.2 and 10.3) 5.3.3 Welded parts Butt welds in the strength envelope shall be formed using an automatic welding procedure and shall not be located in areas where variations of shape exist The welds shall be a continuous penetration with no deviation in the weld Welds and brazed joints shall be free from defects which may impair the safe use of the body O BSI 1996 Copyright European Committee for Standardization Provided by IHS under license with CEN No reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS Not for Resale CEN ENJ3-3 = 3404587 0325295 Figure shows examples of acceptance welds Figure 5.3.4 Attached parts Attached parts shall be made and fixed to the body so as not to cause any dangerous stresses or any specific corrosion risks Non-metallic materials may be used for makjng attached parts as long as they are sufficiently robust Tests The tests described in 6.1 and 6.2 shall be carried out on a minimum of 10 bodies These tests are required for an unalloyed steel body 6.1 Burst test under pressure 6.1.1 Test requirements The burst test under pressure shail be carried out using an installation which permits a regular increase of pressure until the body bursts and also permits the variation of pressure to be recorded as a function of time 6.1.2 Interpretation of results The bursting pressure Pishall not be less than 2,7 times the service pressure P, developed inside the apparatus at the temperature of 60 with a minimum of 55 bar The burst test shall not cause the body to fragment The main break shall show no signs of brittìeness, i.e the edges of the break shall not be radial, but shall be inclined relative to a diametral plane and shall have a reduction in area over their entire thickness The break shall not show any obvious defects in the metal The break shall not originate in the body marking area 6.1.3 Marking of bodies The bodies used for the bursting test shall bear ail n o d markings O C , ``,`-`-`,,`,,`,`,,` - Figure O BSI 1996 Copyright European Committee for Standardization Provided by IHS under license with CEN No reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS Not for Resale 936 = Page EN 3-3 : 1994 6.2 Mechanical strength test (crushing test) The mechanical strength test shall be carried out in the form of a crushing test used to confirm the ductility of the body In carrying out the test the mandrel shall be positioned as stated, but such as to mjnimize the risk of damage to connection points which allow pressurization of the body Damage to these points does not constitute failure and alternative means of pressurizing the body may have to be established The length of the body is the maximum distance between the ends of the pressure envelcpe, excluding any skirt or connection 6.2.1 Long bodies The following method shall be used when the length of the body is greater than 1,5times the outside diameter of the body The body shall be crushed perpendicularly to its longitudinal axis and approximately in the middle of the body by means of a non-deformable cylindrical mandrel of diameter DB = (Df 20) mm and of a length sufficient for each end to overlap the crushed body (see figure 2) The body shall be crushed to 10 times its thickness within a period of 30 to 60 seconds For bodies with a longitudinal weld, the weld seam shall be at 90" to the support line For bodies with a transverse weld, the crushing shall be carried out at an angle of 45" to the weld Following the crushing test, the body shall be filled with water and subjected to the test pressure Ph The body shall not have any cracks or leaks 6.2.2 Short bodies The following method shall be used when the body length is equal to or less than 1,5times the outside diameter of the body The body is crushed perpendicularly to its longitudinal axis at its mid-point using two 25 mm thick mandrels The mandrels shall be radiused for a half cylinder R = 12,5mm and be of sufficient length to extend beyond the sides of the crushed body Crushing, to the dimensions shown in figure shall take place between 30 to 60 s ~ Page EN 3-3: 1994 CEN EN*3-3 94 m 3qOq589 0325296 872 m 6.4 Macroscopic examination The macroscopic examinati ' 'on of a transverse section of the weld shall show complete fusion over the area treated with a preparation acid and any defects shall be revealed if there is any doubt, a microscopic -ambition of the suspect area shall be carried out 6.5 Visual examination of the weld An external visual examination of the weld shall be carried out on the complete weid The welded surface to be examined shall be free from grease, dust, slag residue or any protective coabng The transition between the welded metal and the base metal shall be smooth and free from undercuts The welded surface and d a c e n t surface of the body wall shall not have any cracks, nicks or pores R = , ~ + ~ D/3 = Distance between mandrels at completion of cnishing D = Actual outside diameter of cylinder Figure In the case of bodies having a longitudinal weld, the weld seam shall be at 90" to the mandrels For bodies having a circumferential weld or welds within the zone of deformation, the mandrels shall be at an angle least likely to result in test failure and within 45"to 90" of the longitudinal Cuas of the body Foilowing the crushing test, the body shall be ñlied with water and subjected to the test pressure Ph The body shall not have any cracks or leaks 6.3 Pressure test 6.3.1 Test conditions The pressure test shall be carried out using apparatus that permits a reguiar increase of pressure up to the moment the test pressure is reached 6.3.2 Requirements The test pressure qi shall be not less than 1,3 times the service pressure P, developed inside the body at a temperature of 60 "C and shall be a minimum of 20 bar The test pressure shall be maintained for 30 s and the body shall not leak After the test, the body shall not show any visible signs of permanent deformation The body of the portable extinguisher shall bear at least the foilowing markings: - mark of the body manufacturer, - serial or batch number, - year of manufacture; - test pressure in bar The marks shall be applied to the metal of the body by stamping or engraving Additional requirements 8.1 Closures The closures of the portable extinguishers shall be capable of depressurizing the body before their complete removal 8.2 Pressure relief devices A pressure relief system is not mandatory except on CO2 extinguishers If a pressure relief system is to be used, it may comprise: -
