CHAPTER 2: THE STATUS OF LEARNING VOCABULARY OF THU DAU UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

English is a West Germanic language that is part of the Indo-European language family, originating in early medieval England Its name derives from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Great Britain Over centuries, English has evolved significantly, sharing close ties with Frisian and Lower Saxon, while also incorporating substantial vocabulary from French and Latin, each contributing approximately 29% to modern English, along with influences from Old Norse that have shaped its core grammar and vocabulary.

Old English, derived from North Sea Germanic dialects, emerged with the Anglo-Saxon migration to Great Britain in the 5th century and evolved through contact with Old Norse due to Viking settlement The Middle English period commenced in the late 11th century following the Norman invasion, characterized by the influence of Old French and Latin By the late 15th century, English transitioned into the modern period, marked by significant vowel shifts and the incorporation of Greco-Roman vocabulary during the Renaissance This era also saw the flourishing of English literature, highlighted by the King James Bible translation and the works of William Shakespeare.

Modern English grammar has evolved from the Indo-European system's dependent-marking structure, characterized by rich morphological variation and flexible word order, to a more analytic form This contemporary structure features reduced morphological variation and a more fixed subject-verb-object order Today, English grammar relies significantly on auxiliary verbs and specific word arrangements to convey complex tenses, moods, aspects, and to construct passive, interrogative, and negative forms.

Since the 17th century, Modern English has gained global prominence due to the influence of the British Empire and the United States As a result, it has become a lingua franca in various fields, including science, navigation, and law English is the most widely spoken language worldwide, ranking third in native speakers, following Standard Chinese and Spanish Additionally, it is the most commonly learned foreign language and serves as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Currently, the number of non-native English speakers surpasses that of native speakers.

As of 2005, approximately 2 billion people speak English, making it the most widely spoken Germanic language It is the primary language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland, and is also prevalent in parts of the Caribbean and Europe Additionally, English is co-official in various international organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union, and represents at least 70% of all speakers of Indo-European languages across regions like Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania.

Vocabulary knowledge is crucial for second language learners, as limited vocabulary can hinder effective communication and learning Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is essential for mastering a second language Nation (2001) expands on this, indicating that vocabulary knowledge and language use are interconnected, with each influencing the other The significance of vocabulary is evident both in and out of the classroom, where students who possess a robust vocabulary tend to perform better Research by Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011) further underscores the importance of vocabulary acquisition in language learning.

The acquisition of vocabulary is crucial for effective communication in a second language, significantly impacting both spoken and written expression In the context of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary development is vital for all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a robust vocabulary is essential for successful language use, as a lack of vocabulary can hinder communication Proficiency in a second language heavily relies on lexical knowledge, which is often the primary challenge for learners aiming for fluency in English (Huckin, 1995).

3 The role of learning English vocabulary.

A robust English vocabulary enhances communication skills and enriches self-expression The significance of English words lies in their ability to convey intentions clearly With an extensive vocabulary, individuals can articulate their thoughts with precision; conversely, a limited vocabulary restricts one's ability to express ideas effectively.

A strong vocabulary is essential for developing English language skills, as it enables coherent communication and effective information conveyance Mastering vocabulary allows for the natural and efficient application of the four key skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing Rather than focusing on other skills initially, learners should prioritize building a solid vocabulary foundation, which is crucial for achieving desired outcomes in English proficiency.

Research indicates that proficiency in English significantly enhances academic success, career progression, and business opportunities Studies reveal a correlation between English language skills and increased income, greater travel opportunities, and commercial success The primary reason for this trend is that English has emerged as the world's most widely spoken language.

There are more than 400 million people who use English as their first language, more than 1 billion people who use English as a second language.

English has the largest vocabulary of all languages with over 500,000 words in the Oxford Dictionary.

As the language of science, technology and business, English vocabulary is adding more and more new words.

The countries with high per capita income in the world are all fluent in English, mother tongue or school.

Mastering English is essential for career success across various fields such as informatics, engineering, tourism, and business administration In today's global marketplace, effective communication in English enhances your professional opportunities, especially in Vietnam, where interactions with international clients and suppliers predominantly occur in English It’s crucial to demonstrate a high level of proficiency, as mere basic knowledge will not suffice in building international relations Your English skills will influence how others perceive your value and competence, with factors like clarity, confidence, and understanding of nuances playing a significant role Ultimately, strong English communication skills not only elevate your professional standing but also leave a lasting impression on colleagues and clients alike.

Mastering English significantly enhances graduate opportunities and increases the likelihood of acceptance into advanced training programs at international universities Today's young intellectuals benefit from a growing number of student exchanges and research collaborations Additionally, proficiency in English broadens access to vital news, information, and knowledge, as over 90% of How-To Articles are predominantly in English With dedication, you can self-learn various skills by utilizing English resources effectively.

5 English towards the ASEAN community.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), established on December 31, 2015, comprises 10 member states and significantly impacts Vietnam's labor market and regional labor movement This integration allows for a unified labor market across Southeast Asia, enabling Vietnamese products to reach regional markets and facilitating investment from other ASEAN countries Workers can move freely within the bloc, which helps reduce unemployment and presents numerous job opportunities for Vietnamese citizens, particularly students However, this integration also poses challenges, as Vietnamese workers must compete with higher-quality labor from countries like Singapore and Malaysia, where English proficiency is more common Eight professions, including healthcare and engineering, have been designated for free movement within ASEAN, but disparities in human resource quality remain To thrive in this competitive environment, young Vietnamese workers must enhance their English skills, as many foreign companies prioritize English proficiency in recruitment A recent survey revealed that 41% of FDI representatives struggled to find qualified mid-level and senior employees due to inadequate English skills Consequently, Vietnamese workers who excel in English can command significantly higher salaries, highlighting the urgent need for improved language capabilities in the workforce.

The Trans-Pacific Economic Partnership (TPP) presents significant opportunities for Vietnamese workers; however, many lack the necessary English proficiency to capitalize on these chances During recruitment, candidates often excel in technical knowledge but struggle with English communication, with 75% demonstrating awkwardness in interviews Reasons for this deficiency include a lack of emphasis on English in education, prioritization of other subjects, and a focus on passing exams like TOEIC rather than developing practical language skills This creates barriers for Vietnamese workers, particularly students, in securing desirable jobs As globalization progresses and English becomes a key competitive asset, the popularity of English language centers is on the rise, although their impact on improving language skills remains limited Ultimately, the responsibility lies with individuals to recognize the value of English and actively pursue effective learning methods to enhance their career prospects and competitiveness in the labor market.

6 A brief overview of the current state of English vocabulary learning of all students.

The annual English Proficiency Index (EPI) survey by EF, a leading language training company, assessed over 910,000 adults across 70 countries where English is not the native language The results indicate that Vietnam falls into the moderate proficiency category, achieving a score of 53.81 out of 100.

More closely, the survey showed that the average TOEFL iBT score of Vietnamese people reached 78/120 and IELTS 5.9/9 The two cities with the highest qualifications are

THEORETICAL BASIS

The concept of English

English is a West Germanic language that belongs to the Indo-European language family, with its earliest form spoken in early medieval England The name "English" is derived from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Great Britain Linguistically, English shares close ties with Frisian and Lower Saxon, but its vocabulary has evolved significantly due to influences from ancient dialects, particularly French and Latin, each contributing about 29% to modern English vocabulary, along with Old Norse's impact on its core grammar and vocabulary.

Old English, originating from North Sea Germanic dialects, developed as the native language of the Anglo-Saxons who settled in Great Britain in the 5th century This language evolved significantly during the 8th and 9th centuries due to interactions with Old Norse from Viking settlers The Middle English period commenced in the late 11th century, following the Norman invasion, and was characterized by the strong influence of Old French and Latin By the end of the 15th century, English transitioned into the modern period, marked by a major vowel shift and an influx of Greco-Roman vocabulary during the Renaissance This era also saw the rise of English literature, highlighted by the King James Bible translation and the works of William Shakespeare.

Modern English grammar has evolved from the complex, morphologically rich structure of the Indo-European language family to a more analytic form characterized by reduced morphological variation and a fixed word order This evolution emphasizes the use of auxiliary verbs and specific word arrangements to convey intricate tenses, moods, and aspects, along with passive and interrogative constructions, as well as negative forms.

Since the 17th century, Modern English has gained global prominence due to the influence of the British Empire and the United States, becoming a lingua franca in various professional fields such as science, navigation, and law It is now the most widely spoken language worldwide, with the third largest number of native speakers, following Standard Chinese and Spanish Additionally, English is the most commonly learned foreign language and serves as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Currently, the number of non-native English speakers surpasses that of native speakers.

As of 2005, the estimated number of English speakers worldwide has reached 2 billion, making it the predominant language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland Additionally, English is widely spoken in parts of the Caribbean and Europe, as well as in regions of Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania It serves as a co-official language for major international organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union, and stands as the most widely spoken Germanic language, representing at least 70% of all speakers of Indo-European languages.

What is vocabulary?

Vocabulary knowledge is crucial for second language learners, as limited vocabulary can impede effective communication Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is essential for mastering a second language, while Nation (2001) underscores the interconnectedness of vocabulary knowledge and language use The significance of vocabulary is evident both in and out of the classroom, where students strive to develop a comprehensive vocabulary Research by Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011) further supports the importance of vocabulary acquisition in language learning.

Acquiring a robust vocabulary is crucial for effectively using a second language, as it significantly impacts the ability to create coherent spoken and written texts In both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary knowledge is fundamental across all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a comprehensive vocabulary is vital for successful communication, as a lack of vocabulary hinders understanding Furthermore, lexical knowledge is often the primary barrier that learners face when striving for fluency in English (Huckin, 1995).

The role of learning English vocabulary

A rich English vocabulary enhances communication skills and enables clearer expression of thoughts and intentions Without a substantial vocabulary, individuals may struggle to articulate their ideas effectively, limiting their ability to communicate meaningfully.

A strong vocabulary is essential for developing English skills, as it enables coherent communication and effective information sharing Mastery of vocabulary enhances the application of the four key skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, leading to more efficient learning Instead of focusing on other skills initially, building a solid vocabulary foundation is crucial for achieving desired outcomes in English proficiency.

Importance of English

Research indicates that proficiency in English significantly enhances individuals' academic performance, career opportunities, and business success Studies reveal a correlation between English language skills and increased income, greater travel opportunities, and commercial achievements The primary reason for this trend is that English has emerged as the world's most widely spoken language.

Mastering English is essential for success in any career, including informatics, engineering, tourism, and business administration In today's globalized world, proficiency in English not only enhances communication with international clients and suppliers but also facilitates faster and more accurate internal communications Merely possessing basic English skills is insufficient for advancing in international relations; true professionalism in English is crucial Your English proficiency will influence how others perceive your value, as clear pronunciation, concise descriptions, and an understanding of nuances can significantly impact impressions Ultimately, strong English communication skills can set you apart and leave a lasting impression in your professional interactions.

Mastering English significantly enhances graduate opportunities, increasing the likelihood of acceptance into advanced training programs at international universities Today's young intellectuals benefit from numerous student exchange and research cooperation initiatives Furthermore, proficiency in English broadens access to vital news and information, as over 90% of How-To articles are predominantly available in English, enabling individuals to self-learn various skills through accessible English resources.

English towards the ASEAN community

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), established on December 31, 2015, unites 10 member states, significantly impacting Vietnam's labor market and regional labor movement This integration facilitates the creation of a common market, allowing Vietnamese goods to be consumed across Southeast Asia and enabling businesses from ASEAN countries to invest in Vietnam Workers can freely move between member states, reducing unemployment and presenting numerous job opportunities, particularly for students However, this also poses challenges as Vietnamese workers must compete with higher-quality labor from countries like Singapore and Malaysia, where English proficiency is common To thrive in this competitive landscape, young Vietnamese laborers must enhance their English skills, as a recent survey revealed that 41% of FDI businesses struggled to find qualified mid-level and high-level employees due to inadequate English proficiency This language barrier remains a significant weakness, as evidenced by the disparity in salary offers for English-proficient middle managers compared to those lacking language skills.

The Trans-Pacific Economic Partnership (TPP) presents numerous opportunities for Vietnamese workers, yet many lack the necessary English proficiency to seize these chances During recruitment, while candidates demonstrate strong technical skills and enthusiasm, approximately 75% struggle with English, often only able to deliver a brief self-introduction or translate a fraction of a professional document Reasons for this deficiency include the perception that English assessments are unimportant, prioritizing other subjects, or only studying for exams like TOEIC to graduate These challenges hinder Vietnamese workers, especially students, in securing satisfactory employment As globalization progresses and English becomes a key competitive skill, the rising popularity of English language centers reflects a growing demand for better language training Ultimately, individual self-awareness of the value of English and effective learning strategies are crucial for enhancing career prospects and competitiveness in the labor market, paving the way for Vietnam's economic growth and prosperity.

A brief overview of the English vocabulary learning status of all students

A recent survey on how students learn English vocabulary revealed a concerning limitation in their language skills Only about 10% of students can speak English fluently, with a mere 2% demonstrating smooth comprehension This situation is alarming, especially as English serves as a global lingua franca, crucial for international communication In the context of Vietnam's international economic integration, students represent a vital source of knowledge and potential; however, their lack of foreign language proficiency poses a significant barrier to learning from global peers and acquiring valuable insights to contribute to national development.

Many students at the school struggle with English vocabulary, which they find to be the most challenging aspect of learning the language This difficulty arises not only from translating words from Vietnamese to English but also from mastering the various adjectives, verbs, and nouns necessary for proper contextual use The limited English exposure in their predominantly Vietnamese-speaking environment, combined with the short duration of extracurricular English classes, leads to a cycle of learning, forgetting, and re-learning vocabulary This ineffective use of study time hampers their progress To address this issue, I plan to conduct a survey on vocabulary learning among English majors, aiming to identify effective strategies that can benefit students across all disciplines and facilitate better communication with international peers.

Methods of implementation

The survey method is to create a survey form and print the survey form on A4 paper with 200 survey sheets Take surveys directly from students in the English language major

2.4.3 Statistics on some difficulties of students to learn vocabulary.

At the start of the survey, I pinpointed the challenges faced by students I conducted 200 surveys, asking participants to select the single most significant obstacle hindering their ability to study The results have been compiled and analyzed.

Students face various challenges in learning English vocabulary, which can be categorized into five main groups These difficulties include limited exposure to the language, leading to a lack of familiarity with new words; ineffective study techniques that hinder retention; inadequate motivation and engagement in the learning process; difficulties in understanding contextual usage and nuances of words; and the overwhelming volume of vocabulary to learn, which can create anxiety Addressing these issues is crucial for enhancing students' vocabulary acquisition and overall language proficiency.

SOLUTION

Group of solutions about the environment outside of school hours

Engaging in extracurricular activities such as clubs, associations, and English contests outside of school hours significantly enhances students' vocabulary acquisition These environments provide opportunities for active language practice and regular exposure to real-life English situations, thereby accelerating the learning and retention of vocabulary To further improve these external learning environments, I propose implementing targeted solutions that foster greater interaction and engagement among students.

Firstly, create opportunities for students to collide and interact with real-life situations with native speakers: The best way to learn English effectively is to practice

To enhance English listening skills, it is essential for students to immerse themselves in the language daily, allowing their ears to adapt to its sounds Engaging with native speakers provides valuable practice and fosters improvement in both listening and speaking abilities Regular exposure and interaction with foreigners are particularly beneficial in today’s global economy, where opportunities for studying abroad, cultural exchanges, and travel abound.

To enhance English language training for students, it is essential to organize engaging activities that promote active practice of their skills Events such as English Olympiads, singing contests, and speech competitions, alongside initiatives aimed at fostering a movement towards the ASEAN community, should be held regularly to inspire enthusiasm and initiative in improving English proficiency Additionally, these activities must be diverse and adaptable, ensuring that all English majors have ample opportunities to participate and develop their language abilities effectively.

Infrastructure solutions

English learning resources in libraries are underutilized by students due to their lack of diversity and accessibility, which includes not only English learning methods but also foreign language materials Additionally, the absence of dedicated English classrooms and extracurricular activities, such as English clubs, hampers the learning experience To address these issues, it is essential to upgrade or redesign English teaching spaces, ensuring regular maintenance of teaching equipment, particularly sound systems, to enhance auditory and visual learning Implementing essential teaching aids like illustrations and vocabulary cards can make lessons more engaging Classrooms should be equipped with movable furniture arranged for comfort, promoting an effective learning environment Limiting class sizes to a maximum of 15 students will foster better interaction between teachers and students, enhancing the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Create a dedicated self-study space for English skills development, where students can relax and engage in various activities such as reading, topic-based discussions, TOEIC testing, watching English movies, singing karaoke, and participating in vocabulary games Organize thematic talks featuring experienced lecturers and proficient students, and host photo exhibitions and wall newspapers to enhance the environment Collaborate with English clubs and foreign volunteers to foster a friendly exchange and create an enthusiastic community for English learning Additionally, provide free wireless fiber optic Internet to ensure students have access to suitable study resources.

To enhance student learning, the library must provide a diverse range of accessible English materials, particularly in key areas such as business administration, accounting, and finance This will enable students from various majors to broaden their resources and improve their English skills Additionally, offering access to free educational websites and installing more high-speed internet-connected computers will facilitate document searches, English learning videos, and downloadable listening lessons Furthermore, increasing the number of tables and chairs will create a comfortable space for individual reading, listening practice, and group discussions in English.

Group of solutions about the environment inside the classroom

Students generally rate the classroom environment poorly, with many factors falling below average In English lessons, Vietnamese remains the primary language used, limiting the effectiveness of these classes Additionally, the current curriculum does not adequately focus on enhancing students' English learning skills, resulting in knowledge retention that is primarily cognitive and not practical To address these issues, several solutions have been proposed.

Teachers can effectively implement the compulsory practice method by consistently using English in the classroom, which encourages students to actively listen and interpret However, this approach requires patience and a synchronized effort among all lecturers, avoiding any discrepancies in course registration choices Transitioning to a fully English-speaking teaching environment necessitates a gradual roadmap, as immediate implementation may lead to confusion and hinder students' comprehension of the material being taught.

The school should develop a strategic plan to transition from using Vietnamese to exclusively teaching in English, allowing students adequate time to adjust and fostering a positive mindset towards English classes Additionally, implementing short training sessions for lecturers is essential to enhance their communication skills and facilitate the exchange of teaching experiences with foreign educators.

Students should recognize the significance of actively preparing for lessons before attending class Dedicating time to practice English at home enhances their mood and boosts confidence, leading to a more engaging and proactive learning experience This preparation helps avoid a passive approach to learning and ensures a more effective classroom experience.

Gradually adapting to English lessons enhances students' Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills, facilitating practical communication and retention of vocabulary Regular engagement in English boosts confidence in expressing opinions, improves pronunciation through teacher feedback, and helps students learn proper stress in sentences Additionally, students expand their communicative vocabulary by imitating the teacher's pronunciation and incorporating new words into their language use.

An effective approach for enhancing students' English vocabulary skills is to encourage thorough preparation before class and active engagement during lessons Teachers should implement strategies to motivate students, such as requiring them to form groups and engage in English communication scenarios, with topics tailored to each lesson Incorporating real-life situations into the curriculum is essential for maintaining student interest and facilitating practical application of newly acquired knowledge This method not only aids in retention and comprehension of vocabulary, pronunciation, and contextual usage but also allows students to connect new concepts with previous lessons Ultimately, this fosters a more robust knowledge system and enhances memorization beyond traditional textbook learning.

The English language program emphasizes practical application, catering to learners who typically begin their studies with specific goals in mind, often starting with a general English curriculum This foundational program, commonly taught in high schools, equips students with the skills for basic communication on everyday subjects Since the 1960s, there has been a growing trend towards English teaching programs tailored to the individual needs of learners, leading to the development of English for Specific Purposes (ESP).

The global demand for scientific, technical, and economic communication in English has led to significant advancements in English for Specialization (ESP), driven by a learner-centered educational approach This evolution in linguistics, fueled by industrial innovations, has garnered considerable interest from researchers and translators focused on developing effective teaching materials.

To enhance English proficiency and familiarize students with economic and commercial terminology, the initial phase of the English program for the Faculty of Spoken English should prioritize general business communication This approach aligns with both the school's output standards and TOEIC requirements Subsequently, to address students' needs for specialized reading materials, the curriculum must incorporate ESAP (English for Specific Academic Purposes), which focuses on the language structures, vocabulary, terminology, and skills pertinent to their field of study, emphasizing real-world professional scenarios.

The proposed curriculum solution divides the program into two parts: a general English section aimed at enhancing students' overall language and study skills, building on the General Business English framework, and a specialized section tailored to the students' majors, focusing on reading comprehension and industry-specific terminology This specialized part will involve team teaching by groups of lecturers who will design the curriculum, create teaching materials, and collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure relevant content delivery This approach not only highlights the critical role of language teachers but also addresses the necessity of teaching specialized English effectively.

At the same time limit the study of knowledge that overlaps with what was learned in the general education program.

Incorporating a variety of images and video clips related to the lesson significantly enhances students' understanding of native speakers' communication styles, including gestures and contextual word usage This dynamic approach moves beyond traditional lectures, fostering engagement and excitement in the classroom By interweaving visual aids throughout the teaching process, educators can effectively illustrate newly introduced concepts Teachers should invest time in gathering relevant multimedia resources or encourage students to contribute by sourcing clips and images for upcoming lessons Over time, this collaborative effort will empower students to take a more active role in their learning, increasing their enthusiasm as they see the tangible results of their contributions.

To enhance learning, it's essential to apply newly acquired knowledge to real-life situations in the classroom This practical experience allows students to receive immediate feedback on their pronunciation, intonation, and mannerisms Such engagement fosters creativity, encourages the selection of appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures, and facilitates deeper learning through collaboration with peers and teachers.

Utilizing diverse grammar examples enhances retention and application in communication Educators should encourage students to engage in speaking, writing, and analyzing texts rather than relying solely on multiple-choice assessments This approach stimulates critical thinking and promotes better memory retention Additionally, fostering collaboration among students in their English grammar studies can lead to more engaging and effective practice.

The curriculum should be designed to enhance students' English vocabulary learning by regularly updating and selecting appropriate materials for each learning stage, ensuring balanced practice across all four skills, with a focus on communication Additionally, it is recommended to adjust the assessment ratio to 50/50, aligning with curriculum objectives and reflecting both vocabulary acquisition and overall English proficiency in final exams This approach aims to alleviate pressure on students and program managers regarding classwork and exam preparation, while promoting fairness in English learning outcomes across all majors within the faculty.

To effectively master the pace of the proposed training program, students must dedicate significant time to researching foreign documents that aid their studies and exams through various resources such as the library, internet, and books Consequently, it is essential for the department's library to be enriched with valuable foreign materials, particularly specialized books and documents, to support student learning.

Solution group on students' self-study ability

Self-study plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of learning and training, ultimately leading to success Through self-directed learning, students can keep pace with general knowledge, particularly in English, while quickly adapting to new information and developing innovative learning methods Driven by an intrinsic desire to learn anytime and anywhere, students can significantly improve their academic performance Achieving success in academics and effective communication in English necessitates strong self-study, research, and exploration skills, enabling students to grow and refine their abilities.

Despite achieving only above-average assessment scores, students at the Faculty of English Language recognize the importance of setting goals to enhance their English communication skills and actively seek diverse learning resources However, there is a need to improve three key factors: the effectiveness of their learning methods, time allocation, and self-study efforts Currently, students dedicate insufficient time to developing their English communication skills, primarily focusing on formal English modules with minimal self-study To address these challenges and build on their strengths, students should implement targeted solutions for improvement.

To succeed in self-studying English, it's essential to believe in your abilities and leverage both internal resources and external guidance from lecturers Establishing a clear purpose and motivation for learning is crucial, along with setting SMART goals—specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound For instance, to reach a TOEIC score of 450 within six months, aim to learn at least 10 new vocabulary words daily and practice listening skills through dialogues on platforms like YouTube Additionally, regularly review grammar and take online tests to assess progress.

To improve their English vocabulary, students must take their goals seriously and actively work towards enhancing their learning abilities Staying motivated is crucial, and students can achieve this by incorporating fun activities, such as engaging in games that promote English communication, like character guessing clips or vocabulary lists on specific topics Additionally, changing study environments—such as studying in a park or at a friend's house—can spark interest and boost energy levels, fostering a more enthusiastic approach to self-study Recognizing the importance of motivation in learning English is essential, as it plays a key role in maintaining their study schedule and self-directed learning plans.

To enhance English vocabulary learning effectively, students should create and manage a personalized study plan This plan should outline the learning process and incorporate various methods, such as focusing on topics of interest and utilizing class lectures and reference materials Applying the SQ3R technique—Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review—can help summarize and retain essential knowledge Additionally, students should actively engage during class, as this foundational knowledge supports their self-study and group learning efforts.

Engaging in discussions with knowledgeable friends, teachers, and peers is essential for enhancing your English skills; always ask questions and take notes to avoid common mistakes in grammar and pronunciation Actively applying what you've learned through practice is crucial, so consider forming a self-study group with friends This collaborative environment allows members to share their challenges in listening and speaking, exchange experiences, and collectively improve their English communication skills The key advantage of studying together is the opportunity for real-time interaction, providing a supportive audience to practice and refine your language abilities.

To effectively enhance their English vocabulary, students should prioritize time management by always carrying a notebook and dictionary to capture new words during their daily routines Utilizing "dead" time, such as when encountering English vocabulary on billboards or while interacting with native speakers, can significantly enrich their learning experience Establishing a consistent habit of practicing English daily is crucial, alongside allocating dedicated time for English studies by minimizing unproductive leisure activities Furthermore, engaging seriously in English classes maximizes the efficiency of their learning process.

Students should actively update and gather diverse reference materials, including books, newspapers, and multimedia resources, to enrich their learning experience By collaborating with peers and teachers, and utilizing modern technology, they can enhance their knowledge base and avoid complacency with initial successes.

To enhance self-study and English communication skills, students must overcome distractions from social media and gaming While many recognize the importance of dedicated study time, temptations can easily derail their focus To combat this, it's essential for students to create a balanced timetable that accommodates both study and leisure activities By tailoring a schedule to their individual needs, students can effectively manage their time and improve their academic performance.

Students should create a balanced daily timetable that accommodates their modules in terms of location, format, and timing, while allowing for flexible self-study periods It is essential to maintain the will and perseverance to adhere to this schedule For effective communicative English practice, it is recommended to segment self-study sessions into 30-45 minute intervals, conducted 2-3 times a day, incorporating diverse formats and content Engaging with various communication partners can enhance the interest and effectiveness of self-study sessions.

To successfully learn English, it's essential to change your daily habits and dedicate time each day to practice, just as you would for any other hobby Incorporate English into your routine by reading an English book for at least 30 minutes daily, and engage with the language through movies, social media, and conversations with friends Although it may be challenging to make lasting changes, consistent practice will yield better results than cramming all at once By viewing English as an integral part of your life, you will develop stable habits and a lifestyle that fosters language learning, ultimately leading to your success.

To effectively evaluate our self-study abilities, it's essential to engage with friends, teachers, and English communication clubs to assess our English proficiency This interaction can lead to the development of more effective learning strategies Additionally, recognizing improvements in our English skills can serve as a strong motivator Conversely, if we fail to meet our goals, implementing self-imposed consequences can help us acknowledge our mistakes and encourage corrective action to avoid repeating them.

CONCLUSION

English is a West Germanic language from the Indo-European family, originally spoken in early medieval England Its name derives from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Great Britain While English shares close linguistic ties with Frisian and Lower Saxon, its vocabulary has been significantly shaped by influences from French and Latin, each contributing about 29% to modern English, alongside Old Norse, which has impacted its core grammar and vocabulary.

Old English emerged from the ancient North Sea Germanic dialects spoken by the Anglo-Saxons who migrated to Great Britain in the 5th century This language evolved through the 8th and 9th centuries due to interactions with Old Norse, brought by Viking settlers The Middle English period began in the late 11th century, following the Norman invasion, which introduced significant influences from Old French and Latin By the late 15th century, English transitioned into the modern period, characterized by a major vowel shift and an influx of Greco-Roman vocabulary during the Renaissance This era also saw the rise of English literature, highlighted by the King James Bible translation and the works of William Shakespeare.

Modern English grammar has evolved from the rich morphological variation and flexible word order of the Indo-European system to a more analytic structure This transformation has led to a reliance on auxiliary verbs and a fixed word order to convey complex tenses, moods, aspects, and various sentence structures, including passive and interrogative forms.

Since the 17th century, Modern English has gained global prominence due to the influence of the British Empire and the United States This rise has established English as a lingua franca in various professional fields, including science, navigation, and law Today, it is the most widely spoken language globally and ranks third in native speakers, following Standard Chinese and Spanish English is also the most commonly learned foreign language and serves as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Notably, the number of non-native English speakers now surpasses that of native speakers.

As of 2005, the global population of English speakers is estimated to be around 2 billion, making it the predominant language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland Additionally, English is widely spoken in various regions of the Caribbean and Europe, as well as in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania Recognized as a co-official language by international bodies like the United Nations and the European Union, English stands out as the most widely spoken Germanic language, comprising over 70% of all speakers within the Indo-European language family.

Vocabulary knowledge is essential for second language learners, as limited vocabulary can impede effective communication Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is crucial for mastering a second language, while Nation (2001) emphasizes the interdependent relationship between vocabulary knowledge and language use The significance of vocabulary is evident both in and out of the classroom, where students often strive to acquire comprehensive vocabulary Research by Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011) further underscores the importance of vocabulary acquisition in language learning.

The acquisition of vocabulary is crucial for mastering a second language, significantly impacting the ability to produce coherent spoken and written texts In both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary plays a vital role across all language competencies, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a robust vocabulary is essential for effective communication, as a lack of vocabulary can hinder language use Individuals who have developed strong lexical knowledge find it easier to communicate, while insufficient vocabulary remains a major challenge for learners striving for fluency in English (Huckin, 1995).

3 The role of learning English vocabulary.

A strong English vocabulary enhances communication skills and boosts self-expression The significance of English words lies in their ability to convey thoughts accurately With an extensive vocabulary, individuals can articulate their intentions clearly; however, a limited vocabulary restricts one's ability to express ideas effectively.

A strong vocabulary is essential for developing English skills, as it enables coherent communication and effective information conveyance Mastering vocabulary enhances the application of the four key skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, leading to more efficient learning Rather than focusing on other skills initially, building a solid vocabulary foundation is crucial for achieving desired outcomes in English proficiency.

Research indicates that proficiency in English significantly enhances academic success, career progression, and business opportunities Studies reveal a strong correlation between English language skills and higher income, increased travel opportunities, and commercial success This trend is largely attributed to English being the most widely spoken language globally.

Mastering English is essential for success in any career, including informatics, engineering, tourism, and business administration Strong communication skills in English can significantly enhance your professional opportunities, especially in a globalized market like Vietnam, where interactions with international clients and suppliers are conducted in English Merely having basic English knowledge is insufficient for advancing in international relations; true professionalism in English is crucial Your proficiency will be assessed during conversations, influencing how others perceive your value Clear pronunciation, concise communication, and an understanding of nuances and humor all contribute to making a lasting impression and demonstrating your competence.

Mastering English significantly enhances your prospects for graduate opportunities and acceptance into advanced training programs at universities worldwide Today's young intellectuals benefit from an increasing number of student exchanges and research collaborations Furthermore, proficiency in English broadens access to vital news, information, and knowledge, as over 90% of How-To Articles are primarily written in English By dedicating time to explore English resources, you can effectively teach yourself a wide array of skills.

5 English towards the ASEAN community.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), established on December 31, 2015, is a regional economic bloc comprising 10 ASEAN member states, significantly impacting Vietnam's labor market and labor movement trends This integration allows for a unified labor market across Southeast Asia, enabling Vietnamese goods to be consumed regionally and facilitating investment opportunities from ASEAN countries in Vietnam Workers can now move freely within the bloc, which helps reduce unemployment and underemployment while presenting Vietnamese workers, especially students, with ideal job prospects However, this also poses challenges in terms of competition with higher-quality labor from other ASEAN nations Eight professions, including accountants and engineers, are now able to move freely across the region, but disparities in human resource quality and integration readiness persist Countries like Singapore and Malaysia benefit from early adoption of English as a second language, giving them a competitive edge To thrive in this evolving labor market, young Vietnamese workers must enhance their English proficiency, as a recent survey revealed that 41% of FDI businesses struggle to find qualified mid-level and high-level employees due to insufficient English skills Consequently, individuals proficient in English are highly sought after, with salaries for bilingual middle managers reaching up to $4,000/month, contrasting sharply with lower salaries for those lacking language skills.

The Trans-Pacific Economic Partnership (TPP) presents significant opportunities for Vietnamese workers, yet many lack the necessary English proficiency to capitalize on these prospects During recruitment, while candidates may demonstrate strong technical skills and enthusiasm, approximately 75% struggle with English during interviews Most can only manage brief self-introductions or translate a fraction of professional documents Reasons for this deficiency include a lack of emphasis on English in education, prioritizing other subjects, and focusing solely on passing exams like TOEIC These challenges hinder job prospects for Vietnamese students and workers As globalization diminishes borders, English has become a vital competitive asset, leading to a rise in English language centers However, true improvement in English skills hinges on individual employees recognizing the importance of language proficiency for their careers and actively pursuing effective learning methods to enhance their competitiveness in the labor market.

6 A brief overview of the current state of English vocabulary learning of all students.

The annual English Proficiency Index (EPI) survey by EF, a global language training company, assessed over 910,000 adults across 70 non-native English-speaking countries and territories The results indicate that Vietnam falls into the moderate proficiency category, achieving a score of 53.81 out of 100.

More closely, the survey showed that the average TOEFL iBT score of Vietnamese people reached 78/120 and IELTS 5.9/9 The two cities with the highest qualifications are
