Cao Vu Viet Anh – 10220508 – I18S6 CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW I/ OVERVIEW OF TIKTOK 2.1) History and uses of Tiktok “A social media software called TikTok enables users to create brief videos Making creative, lip-synched music videos is particularly popular, and users may add filters, text, noises, and music Users peruse through a newsfeed, comment on posts, and use hashtags to navigate In China, where it is known as Douyin, the app was released in 2016 The name TikTok, which supposedly is a play on the sound of a ticking clock and a phrase for minute-by-minute movement, was used when it went global in 2017 Musically, TikTok acquired and merged with a rival in 2017–18.” (Lemoine, 2021) TikTok was founded with the goal of allowing users to produce trendy videos, promote, and purchase without the need of e-commerce networks TikTok, in addition to Facebook, YouTube, and Snapchat, is another platform for sending meaningful messages through video or action 2.2) Teenagers are addicted to TikTok The advantages TikTok offers are indisputable, particularly in light of the COVID-19 epidemic But many young people have become overly reliant on TikTok as a result of utilizing that program often and for a long time Additionally, teens who spend hours watching videos on TikTok might develop addictions Following a time of socially detached online learning, the students noted that 63% of them were diverted from their studies and other tasks by social networks, most often TikTok This occurs when children are exposed to electronic gadgets rather than the classroom throughout the period of social separation Minors will find it simpler to utilize social media as a result As a result, the phenomena of teenagers being addicted to social networks, particularly TikTok, will occur (Chứng Nghiện Tiktok giới trẻ, 2022) Cao Vu Viet Anh – 10220508 – I18S6 CHAPTER IV MAJOR FINDINGS & ANALYSIS less than hour ; 16.67% more than hours; 45.24% more than hours 1-2 hours less than hour 1-2 hours ; 38.10% 4.1 The frequency of getting access to TikTok of teenagers Figure 1: Time using TikTok per day People 1 10 Extent Figure 2: Extents that participants need or use TikTok per day Cao Vu Viet Anh – 10220508 – I18S6 College students utilize various social media sites with varying rates, as seen by the pie chart Overall, students regularly utilize mobile phones for social networking The index of more than hours, for example, contains the most portions Students who use social media for less than an hour account for the tiniest portion of the pie chart To be more exact, 45% of respondents spend more than hours every day on social media Meanwhile, the typical time is about 1-2 hours This time extension was used by 38% of responders Last but not least, less than one-hour users account for barely 17% of all users Because college students' needs are now at an all-time high, the amount of time they spend each day on social media for amusement, acknowledging the world, has increased dramatically The bar chart just beneath the pie chart depicts the social media usage of college students I polled Tiktok use is classified into ten stages, as shown in Figure For example, represents not using social media at all, represents moderate usage, and 10 represents extreme addiction Because Tiktok is a random video app, addiction to it is extremely predictable With a wealth of useful and appealing material, this will be an ideal tool for students to use for a variety of purposes The figure shows that there are six persons at level 1, six more at level 2, six more at level 5, and up to four people at level 10 Since the number "4" is obviously lower than others, comparing it to other levels is not an apparent comparison to make However, level 10 is a risky cap that a Tiktok user might achieve owing to the addictive nature of appealing material This can represent the various realities of pupils that use Tiktok excessively Additionally, level 7, which denotes frequent use of Tiktok, has the greatest user density Cao Vu Viet Anh – 10220508 – I18S6 4.2 Benefits of using TikTok According to the data, 61.9% of respondents concur that TikTok enables pupils to learn crucial knowledge about society Additionally, 23.8% of respondents are unaware of or unconcerned about these advantages The second is about using TikTok as a tool to help pupils learn valuable information Nearly half of poll participants are unaware of this perspective, despite it being shared by 42.51 percent of respondents The third is that TikTok may be used by anyone in general and teens in particular to generate income by selling and advertising Only a small percentage of respondents, or 9.4%, disagree with this; a sizeable portion, or 30.9%, have no opinion The fourth benefit of TikTok for pupils is its value for online learning This time, the proportion of those who disagreed rose to 42.8%, while 45.2% of the population did not express an opinion According to the proportion of survey respondents, this demonstrates that TikTok is not good for learning but rather is just useful for sales, promotion, or mainly simply for fun Last but not least, TikTok aids in the development of kids' communication skills Teenagers that are introverted frequently use TikTok, which might help them improve their communication abilities However, just 50% of those who responded to the study were aware of this, and another 23.8% disagreed From the above data, it is clear that TikTok has little to no benefits for children's learning and only benefits in terms of commercial advertising, Cao Vu Viet Anh – 10220508 – I18S6 sales, and social information providing when they are learning online Additionally, TikTok appears to take socialising more seriously 4.3 Disadvantages of using TikTok Questions concerning TikTok's influence on teens and students are included in the following table The first category is "dirty" content, commonly referred as as stuff that is offensive to the TikTok community The first type of content is referred to as "dirty" content or stuff that is offensive to the TikTok community According to 61.9% of respondents to the poll, such information has an impact on pupils' psyche In addition, 31% of the participants don't have any opinions about the job in question The second is that TikTok diverts kids from their studies This circumstance was discussed and supporting data were provided in the literature review As a result, it is clear that 76.2% of respondents agree, which indicates a considerable proportion Third, the marketing and online sales tactics of the TikTok program may deceive pupils However, not everyone is aware of this Nearly 43% of those who responded to the study may have encountered this and concur However, 38.1% of those surveyed either not know or have no view on this; 19.1% of those surveyed disagree The fact that workaholic teens become wellknown on TikTok is another one of the app's main effects There aren't many individuals who entirely disagree, and even fewer who disagree at all Thus, practically everyone concurs with this viewpoint From the aforementioned factors, it can be concluded that 10 Cao Vu Viet Anh – 10220508 – I18S6 TikTok has a lot of drawbacks and is terrible for both students and minors' life, especially in terms of content and popularity on social networks Figure 3: people that miss important things just because of surfing videos on TikTok Furthermore, more than half of poll participants, 64.3%, concur that using TikTok has caused them to become distracted or to neglect critical responsibilities 11 Cao Vu Viet Anh – 10220508 – I18S6 CHAPTER IV RECOMMENDATION 1) This research is provided to teens between the ages of 16 and 20 As a result, future study should focus on other age groups, such as tweens, who are more relevant to address from this perspective 2) When conducting research on the TikTok craze, we discovered several challenges occurring in the way individuals utilize social media, with little or no solutions As a result, another study should be conducted to focus on people's proclivity to use other forms of social media, such as Youtube, a well-known medium with wellprotected security 12 Cao Vu Viet Anh – 10220508 – I18S6 CHAPTER V CONCLUSION Eventually, as TikTok's popularity among young adults rises as a result of its activities, an increasing number of concerns occur that have a detrimental influence on teens' lifestyles By doing this study, we assist young people recognize their challenges and consider what they may to find a solution To address the issues, kids should create their own timetable to track how much time they spend studying and having fun When kids begin completing schoolwork, they should switch off their phone notifications in order to focus totally on their work They should also develop the practice of going to bed early in order to enhance not only their health but also their capacity to focus on lessons, which will help them push their outcomes This study, however, has drawbacks To begin, it was carried out at random on 42 participants, a small number that does not focus on a single place Second, while we were successful in compiling statistics on the impact of TikTok on youth, we did not identify adequate ways to overcome hurdles We will spend more time carefully considering numerous viable methods to address the restrictions We hope that in the future, society will have more policies in place to address the issue of youngsters misusing social media in order to eliminate disadvantages to the greatest extent feasible 13
