STEERING COLUMN – STEERING SYSTEM SR–3 REPAIR Steering Wheel Masking Tape Steering Column Upper Cover STEERING OFF CENTER REPAIR PROCEDURE (a) Inspect steering wheel off center (1) Apply masking tape to the top center of the steering wheel and steering column upper cover (2) Drive the vehicle in a straight line for 100 meters at a constant speed of 35 mph (56 km/ h), and hold the steering wheel to maintain the course F051338E01 (3) Draw a line on the masking tape as shown in the illustration Steering Column Upper Cover Marked Line Steering Wheel Masking Tape F051339E01 (4) Turn the steering wheel to its straight position HINT: Refer to the steering column upper cover and marked line on the steering wheel for the straight position (5) Draw a new line on the masking tape or the steering wheel as shown in the illustration (6) Measure the distance between the lines on the masking tape of the steering wheel (7) Convert the measured distance to the steering angle Measured distance mm (0.04 in.): Steering angle approximately deg HINT: Make a note of the steering angle Steering Column Upper Cover Marked Line Steering Wheel F051340E01 SR SR–4 STEERING COLUMN – STEERING SYSTEM Marked Line R000429E06 F016018E02 SR (b) Adjust the steering angle (1) Draw a line on the RH and LH tie rods and on the RH and LH rack ends which can easily be seen (2) Using a paper gauge, measure the distance from RH and LH tie rod ends to the rack end screws HINT: • Measure both the RH and LH side • Make a note of the measured values (3) Remove the RH and LH boot clips from the rack boots (4) Loosen the RH and LH lock nuts (5) Turn the RH and LH rack ends by the same amount (but in different directions) according to the steering angle Amount of turn: 360° turn of rack end (1.5 mm (0.059 in.) horizontal movement) - 12° of steering angle (6) Tighten the RH and LH lock nuts Torque: 55.5 N*m (566 kgf*cm, 41 ft.*lbf) NOTICE: Make sure that the difference in length between the RH and LH tie rod ends and rack end screws is less than 1.5 mm (0.059 in.) (7) Install the RH and LH boot clips POWER STEERING – VANE PUMP (for 1GR-FE) PS–9 REMOVAL DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO (for 4WD and Pre-Runner) REMOVE FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT (See page EM-5) DRAIN POWER STEERING FLUID DISCONNECT OIL RESERVOIR TO PUMP HOSE NO (a) Disengage the clip and disconnect the oil reservoir to pump hose No DISCONNECT PRESSURE FEED TUBE ASSEMBLY (a) Remove the union bolt, then disconnect the pressure feed tube (b) Remove the gasket from the pressure feed tube REMOVE VANE PUMP (a) Disconnect the oil pressure switch connector (b) Remove the bolt and wire harness clamp bracket F051257 F051258 PS F051259 (c) Remove the bolts and vane pump assembly F051260 PS–10 POWER STEERING – VANE PUMP (for 1GR-FE) DISASSEMBLY FIX VANE PUMP (a) Using SST, fix the vane pump assembly in a vise SST 09630-00014 (09631-00132) NOTICE: When using a vise, not over tighten it REMOVE POWER STEERING SUCTION PORT UNION (a) Remove the bolt and suction port union (b) Remove the O-ring from the suction port union REMOVE FLOW CONTROL VALVE (a) Remove the pressure port union (b) Remove the O-ring from the pressure port union (c) Remove the flow control valve and compression spring REMOVE POWER STEERING OIL PRESSURE SWITCH NOTICE: Be careful not to drop or badly damage the oil pressure switch If damaged, replace it with a new one REMOVE VANE PUMP HOUSING REAR (a) Remove the bolts and vane pump housing rear from the vane pump housing front (b) Remove the O-ring from the vane pump housing front REMOVE PULLEY SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY NOTICE: Be careful not to drop or badly damage the pulley shaft If damaged, replace it with a new one (a) Using a screwdriver, remove the snap ring from the pulley shaft (b) Remove the pulley shaft REMOVE VANE PUMP ROTOR (a) Remove the 10 vane plates (b) Remove the vane pump rotor REMOVE VANE PUMP CAM RING REMOVE VANE PUMP SIDE PLATE FRONT (a) Remove the side plate from the vane pump housing front (b) Remove the O-ring from the side plate SST F042477E01 PS C065368 POWER STEERING – VANE PUMP (for 1GR-FE) PS–11 (c) Remove the O-ring from the vane pump housing front F051267 10 REMOVE VANE PUMP HOUSING OIL SEAL (a) Using screwdriver, remove the oil seal NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the vane pump housing front F051268 INSPECTION Bushing Pulley Shaft INSPECT OIL CLEARANCE (a) Using a micrometer and caliper gauge, measure the oil seal clearance Standard clearance: 0.021 to 0.043 mm (0.0008 to 0.0017 in.) Maximum clearance: 0.07 mm (0.0028 in.) If it is greater than the maximum, replace the vane pump assembly INSPECT VANE PUMP ROTOR AND VANE PUMP PLATE (a) Using a micrometer, measure the height, thickness and length of the vane plates Minimum height: 7.7 mm (0.303 in.) Minimum thickness: 1.408 mm (0.0554 in.) Minimum length: 11.993 mm (0.4722 in.) Front Housing F051269E02 Thickness Height Length N000372E03 (b) Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between a side face of the vane pump rotor groove and vane plate Maximum clearance: 0.025 mm (0.0012 in.) If it is greater than the maximum, replace the vane pump assembly Feeler Gauge R010282E01 PS PS–12 POWER STEERING – VANE PUMP (for 1GR-FE) INSPECT FLOW CONTROL VALVE (a) Coat the flow control valve with power steering fluid and check that it falls smoothly into the flow control valve hole under its own weight F051270 (b) Check the flow control valve for leakage Close one of the holes and apply compressed air of 392 to 490 kPa (4 to kgf/cm2, 57 to 71 psi) to the hole on the opposite side Confirm that the air does not flow out of the end holes If necessary, replace the vane pump assembly Compressed Air F052069E02 INSPECT COMPRESSION SPRING (a) Using vernier calipers, measure the free length of the spring Minimum free length: 36.9 mm (1.453 in.) Suspension arm ball joints (Worn) (2WD) 10 Steering column (Binding) Poor return See page Vane pump (2TR-FE) PS-21 Vane pump (1GR-FE) PS-11 Power steering link (2WD) PS-35 Power steering link (4WD and Pre-Runner) PS-60 POWER STEERING – POWER STEERING SYSTEM PS–3 ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION INSPECT DRIVE BELT (a) Visually check the belt for defects, such as excessive wear and frayed cords If any defects are found, replace the drive belt HINT: Cracks on the rib side of a belt are considered acceptable Replace the belt if there are any missing ribs BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM (a) Check the fluid level (b) Jack up the front of the vehicle and support it with stands (c) Turn the steering wheel (1) With the engine stopped, turn the wheel slowly from lock to lock several times (d) Lower the vehicle (e) Start the engine (1) Run the engine at idle for a few minutes (f) Turn the steering wheel (1) With the engine idling, turn the wheel to the left or right full lock position and keep it there for to seconds Then turn the wheel to the opposite full lock position and keep it there for to seconds (step A) (2) Repeat step A several times (g) Stop the engine F040449 for 2TR-FE: Normal Abnormal (h) Check for foaming or emulsification Especially, if the system has to be bled twice because of foaming or emulsification, check for fluid leakage in the system (i) Check the fluid level PS for 1GR-FE: Normal Abnormal C114971E01 PS–4 POWER STEERING – POWER STEERING SYSTEM for 2TR-FE: for 1GR-FE: INSPECT FLUID LEVEL (a) Keep the vehicle level (b) With the engine stopped, check the fluid level in the oil reservoir If necessary, add fluid Fluid: ATF "DEXRON" II or III HINT: Check that the fluid level is within the HOT level range in the reservoir tank If the fluid is cold, check that it is within the COLD level range (c) Start the engine and let it idle (d) Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to raise fluid temperature Fluid temperature: 75 to 80°C (167 to 176°F) C125125E01 for 2TR-FE: Normal Abnormal for 1GR-FE: Normal Abnormal PS C114971E01 (e) Check for foaming or emulsification If any foaming or emulsification is identified, bleed the power steering system PS–5 POWER STEERING – POWER STEERING SYSTEM for 2TR-FE: (f) With the engine idling, measure the fluid level in the oil reservoir (g) Stop the engine (h) Wait a few minutes and measure the fluid level in the oil reservoir again Maximum fluid level rise: mm (0.20 in.) If any problems are found, bleed the power steering system (i) Check the fluid level mm (0.20 in.) or less Engine Idling for 1GR-FE: Engine Stopped mm (0.20 in.) or less Engine Idling Engine Stopped C114972E01 INSPECT STEERING FLUID PRESSURE (a) for 2TR-FE: (1) Disconnect the pressure feed tube from the vane pump (See page PS-19) (b) for 1GR-FE: (1) Disconnect the pressure feed tube from the vane pump (See page PS-9) (c) Connect SST as shown in the illustration SST 09640-10010 (09641-01010, 09641-01030, 09641-01060) NOTICE: Check that the valve of SST is in the open position (d) Bleed the power steering system (e) Start the engine and let it idle (f) Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to raise the fluid temperature Fluid temperature: 75 to 80 °C (167 to 176 °F) for 2TR-FE: SST PS Attachment IN Attachment OUT Pressure Feed Tube F051281E01 PS–6 POWER STEERING – POWER STEERING SYSTEM for 1GR-FE: SST Attachment IN OUT Pressure Feed Tube Attachment F043676E01 Oil Reservoir PS Gear Colsed PS Vane Pump SST Z015498E04 Oil Reservoir PS PS Gear Open PS Vane Pump SST (g) With the engine idling, close the valve of SST and check the reading on SST Fluid pressure: 8,300 to 8,800 kPa (85 to 90 kgf/cm2, 1,209 to 1,280 psi) NOTICE: • Do not keep the valve closed for more than 10 seconds • Do not let the fluid temperature become too high (h) With the engine idling, fully open the valve (i) Measure the fluid pressure at the engine speeds of 1,000 rpm and 3,000 rpm Fluid pressure difference: 490 kPa (5 kgf/cm2, 71 psi) or less NOTICE: Do not turn the steering wheel Z015499E04 (j) Oil Reservoir Lock Position PS Gear Open PS Vane Pump SST Z015500E04 With the engine idling and valve fully open, turn the steering wheel to the full lock position Fluid pressure: 8,300 to 8,800 kPa (85 to 90 kgf/cm2, 1,209 to 1,280 psi) NOTICE: • Do not keep the steering wheel in the full lock position for more than 10 seconds • Do not let the fluid temperature become too high POWER STEERING – POWER STEERING SYSTEM PS–7 (k) Disconnect SST (l) for 2TR-FE: (1) Connect the pressure feed tube to the vane pump (See page PS-25) (m) for 1GR-FE: (1) Connect the pressure feed tube to the vane pump (See page PS-15) (n) Bleed the power steering system R015649 INSPECT STEERING EFFORT (a) Center the steering wheel assembly (b) Remove the horn button assembly (See page RS558) (c) Start the engine and let it idle (d) Measure the steering effort in both directions Steering effort (Reference): 6.0 N*m (60 kgf*cm, 53 in.*lbf) or less HINT: Check the tire type, pressure and contact surfaces before making a diagnosis (e) Install the steering wheel assembly set nut Torque: 50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf) (f) Install the horn button assembly (See page RS558) PS
