Camau Fertilizer Company, the employees must achieve the TOEIC certificates, and their required scores are based on their job titles However, they have been facing several problems in taking the test The current research aims to explore difficulties encountered by employees of Camau Fertilizer Company in taking the TOEIC The study employed a mixed-method research design, combining qualitative and quantitative research approaches The sample was 104 employees working in the factory SPSS version 26.0 was employed to examine data collected from the questionnaires and the content analysis approach to analyze information gathered from the interviews The research findings showed that regarding test-related difficulties, the company employees had problems with the test time limit and culture-specific topics but not the test format Regarding test-taker-related difficulties, they had problems with English proficiency, lack of motivation, lack of practical training, and anxiety but I have to it as quickly as possible with the easy questions to spare time for the difficult ones I always try my best to finish the test as well as possible.” 75 3b E7 said: “There is no time to check the answers one more time to ensure that I did it correctly, and the allotted time for the test is relatively short to finish it confidently.” E8 said: “I can not manage and allocate time effectively; I often choose some answers quickly when the test is running out of time.” E9 said: “I not have enough time to read and understand the gist of the question first and then listen to the audio I usually read and listen simultaneously, and this approach makes me unsure about my choices.” E10 said: “When the test is running out of time, I usually choose the answers from my initiative and without a careful analysis.” E1 said: “I think culture contributes to the difficulties of the test, but just for some sentences, it just has a minor impact on the test.” E2 said: “My target is not to finish all the questions of the test I usually skip several difficult questions, including culture-specific ones.” E3 said: “Questions related to culture-specific topics are timedemanding Sometimes, I understood the meaning of words in the sentence but could not choose the answers immediately.” E4 said: “When dealing with culture-specific questions, I need more time to consider the cultural aspects contributing to the correct answers.” E5 said: “ I not understand Western culture and not have time to learn about them I am unfamiliar with the Australian one because of its unpopularity in our society.” E6 said: “I am interested in culture and usually enjoy watching cultural programs on television However, I have not seen many things related to Australian culture.” E7 said: “I think culture contributes to the difficulties of the test, but just for some sentences, it just has a minor impact on the test It is interesting to learn about culture, but we not know what type of culture is used in the test because of cultural diversity.” E8 said: “ I understand American and British culture to a certain extent However, it is not easy to choose the correct answers based on cultural knowledge.” E9 said: “Learning other languages and cultures is significant because of global communication However, the test prefers to evaluate the examinees’ language proficiency rather than cultural understanding Therefore, high English level test-takers can handle culture-specific questions with ease.” 76 E10 said: “I not understand the culture that I have never been to, and that is why I am struggling to deal with culture-related questions on the test.” 3c 4a E1 said: “I have taken the test several times, and knowing the test conventions is a must before taking any examination, and the TOEIC is not an exception.” E2 said: “The test conventions are the most basic information that an examinee needs to know; otherwise, they will validate the rule and be asked to stop taking the test.” E3 said: “Before taking the test, I am thoroughly instructed how to it by examiners to ensure nothing is unclear I totally understand the test instructions.” E4 said: “When training for the test, I read the instructions in Vietnamese; therefore, we have no difficulty understanding them.” E5 said: “Actually, I know there are 200 questions as a whole, but I not know how many questions are each part of the test I just focus on how to the test well Furthermore, I feel unsure when I cannot listen to the audio again.” E6 said: “I am not good at listening for some reason, and having one time of listening makes my listening test even worse Moreover, I usually run out of time and energy in the reading test because of its length and complication.” E7 said: “Being aware of the number of questions in each part of the test can effectively equip test-takers with time and energy effectively They can allocate the best approach and finish the test.” E8 said: “I am not 100% sure about choosing the correct answers when having once listened to the test audio because of various reasons, such as technical problems, the environment, and listening skills Nevertheless, it is a test with international standards, and we must accept the rule.” E9 said: “I feel unsure when having no chance to listen to the audio again, which is one of my weaknesses when taking the test.” E10 said: “I feel tired, especially at the end of the test, because of the complexity of the reading part.” E1 said: “I am not good at English pronunciation, and sometimes I have to repeat what I am saying to ensure others understand Furthermore, working with foreigners rarely happens in my job, and the main focus of the conversation is on the job technically done Therefore, my English proficiency does not improve much.” E2 said: “I usually mispronounce English vocabulary and not have someone to correct my pronunciation Moreover, the English 77 4b language is always a barrier for those who want to achieve the expert level in the company, albeit learning it from high school.” E3 said: “It is reluctant to speak English with others, and I not feel comfortable at all.” E4 said: “I have not spoken English for ten years, and not willing to speak the language if not being asked.” E5 said: “Using English is uncommon at my workplace, and I am afraid of being laughed at when making mistakes E6 said: “I sometimes read English materials when in need and usually use a dictionary for translation.” E7 said: “ I am not confident in my listening skill and usually miss information in the listening test E8 said: “English grammar is varied and tricky; therefore, it is not easy to master it However, I am confident with my English proficiency and believe I can achieve the required score.” E9 said: “I can communicate in English but have to improve my language proficiency to achieve a certain level of the test, and as for better use in the future Moreover, English pronunciation is tricky, and no rules, but it is not my problem I can pronounce the English words clearly enough for others to understand.” E10 said: “There are so many words in the English language that I can not remember their spellings and meanings and utilize them in the test E1 said: “It is wonderful that employees’ salary remains intact because the company does not charge those who not get the language certificate So I can spend less time studying for the test and focus more on my professional development Moreover, I learn English mostly by listening to podcasts when sitting on the company buses, and it is a fixed time to learn English whether or not I have other things more interesting.” E2 said: “My salary is not affected by the test result whether or not I achieve the required score, a financial bonus will be given to whom have met the company language requirement Currently, learning English is on my to-do list because it can help me communicate more fluently with foreign counterparts, as well as effectively prepare me for the future in this changing and competitive world ” E3 said: “I think English has a very little effect on my career, it just affects who communicates more with foreigners Furthermore, I have a little interest in learning English but not have a strong motivation to study the language E4 said: “With my job position, I have to take the test according to the company policy.” 78 4c E5 said: “The company employees are all Vietnamese, and our jobs are all done in Vietnamese Therefore, the role of the English language is mediocre.” E6 said: “English is not my cup of tea, and learning it is not one of my priorities Moreover, it takes much time and effort to achieve a certain level of fluency in the language.” E7 said: “I would not have taken the test if the company had not asked Learning English and preparing for the test is stressful and time-consuming.” E8 said: “I am interested in learning for the test because it is a good way to increase my income when having the certificate accomplished In addition, my English level can improve significantly along the way.” E9 said: “English is necessary for a large number of people However, I have not found the interest and motivation to invest time, money, and effort to learn the language and acquire the TOEIC certificate.” E10 said: “I learn English not only for my job but also for my future and my children I have set getting the TOEIC certificate a priority because it is one of the requirements for the company specialist agenda.” E1 said: “Preparation is vital to finish the test well, even with flying colors Accordingly, I spend much time reviewing the most frequently seen questions to ensure that I can finish the test easily.” E2 said: “I disagreed with the idea that it is not necessary to prepare for the test if they are good at English because preparation helps stay focused on the topics most appear in the test.” E3 said: “I not use English frequently and just use it for writing emails discussing technical issues with foreigners Furthermore, I sometimes teach my children to finish their English homework.” E4 said: “In my workplace, using English is not common; we all speak Vietnamese and sometimes use English to communicate with foreigners.” E5 said: “I have time to study English, but it takes time and effort to be proficient in the language and achieve the desired score in the TOEIC.” E6 said: “I not have much free time However, if it is urgent for me to get the TOEIC desired score, I will spare time to study the language, and prepare for the test.” E7 said: “I have time to prepare for the test, but I not know the best approach that is easily done and time-saving Furthermore, I use time unwisely and usually get distracted by other trivial things.” 79 4d 4e E8 said: “I sometimes use English at work and read Englishwritten materials to understand the operation and maintenance procedure of some machines Moreover, language use is indispensable when working with foreign partners and attending international events.” E2 said: “The TOEIC materials are abundant on the internet; I have downloaded more than five sets of practice tests but have not learned much.” E3 said: “I am obsessed with the TOEIC materials; I can get plenty of them with one click on Google search engine.” E4 said: “I learn English by myself, and no need to come to an English class or TOEIC courses.” E5 said: “TOEIC courses sound fine, but I can not manage attend those types of classes for various reasons.” E6 said: “I have not done any TOEIC practice test so far, and I just learned general and professional English to benefit my career Consequently, I not gain much knowledge, experience, and suitable approaches to handling different types of questions in the test.” E7 said: “I seldom take a full test, just take a look at some very first questions of the test; therefore, I would say I not take many TOEIC practice tests.” E8 said: “I believe test-taking strategies not help much in taking the test for someone with high English proficiency, and that is the reason why I am focusing on improving my language knowledge and test performance instead of equipping myself with tips and tricks in taking the test.” E9 said: “I have done the test twice according to the company policy For that reason, I suppose I not have much experience in taking the test.” E2 said: “I the test under stress and pressure I may not achieve the required score.” E3 said: “The test is not my worry; just take the test according to the company policy because my salary is not affected by the test result.” E4 said: “Some people worry about the test results However, it is not my case; I enthusiastically embrace the test report because it announces how good I am at the English language and what aspects I must improve.” E5 said: “I feel like the test time runs too fast, and I am afraid of not having enough time to answer all the questions confidently, as well as having no question left unanswered.” 80 E6 said: “My English proficiency is not bad, but it is better to be equipped with useful test-taking skills to finish the test with flying colors I not feel sure enough about these skills.” E7 said: “I am rushed in taking the test and have very little time to prepare because of my full-time job as an engineer.” E8 said: “I wonder how much preparation is needed to the test well and usually feel insufficient about it.” 81 APPENDIX F The test content of TOEIC listening and reading and an example of the score report (adapted from the TOEIC Examinee Handbook, 2022) Listening Section (approx 45 minutes, 100 questions) Listen to conversations and narrations and answer the questions Photographs: questions Four short statements regarding a photograph will be spoken only one Part1 time The statements will not be printed Of these four statements, select the one that best describes the photograph and mark your answer on the answer sheet Question-Response: 25 questions Part2 Three responses to one question or statement will be spoken only one time They will not be printed Select the best response for the question, and mark your answer on the answer sheet Conversations: 39 questions Conversations between two or three people will be spoken only one time They will not be printed Listen to each conversation and read the questions printed in the test book (the questions will also be spoken), Part3 select the best response for the question, and mark your answer on the answer sheet Some questions may require responses related to information found in diagrams, etc., printed on the test book as well as what you heard in the conversations There are three questions for each conversation Talks: 30 questions Short talks, such as announcements or narrations, will be spoken only one Part4 time They will not be printed Listen to each talk and read the questions printed in the test book (the questions will also be spoken), select the best response for the question, and mark your answer on the answer sheet 82 Some questions may require responses related to information found in diagrams, etc., printed on the test book as well as what you heard in the talks There are three questions for each talk Reading Section (75 minutes, 100 questions) Read printed questions and answer them Incomplete Sentences: 30 questions Part5 Select the best answer of the four choices to complete the sentence, and mark your answer on the answer sheet Text Completion: 16 questions Part6 Select the best answer of the four choices (words, phrases, or a sentence) to complete the text, and mark your answer on the answer sheet There are four questions for each text Single Passages: 29 questions;
