PENDING By Betty Fisher Large crowd today, 40, and lots of food. It was Birthday Day. The Rising Star Nursing Center, represented by Lori Osborn and Kathy Davis R.N. [ doing BPs and Blood sugars ] , and Karel Soto, and Donna McIntire brought gifts for the birthday people and food for the table. Thelma Gilliland was present today, and the only one with a January birthday. There- fore, she won the gifts without opposition. Eula said she went to church Sunday! Which reminded me, Thelma Ford was telling me about her grandchildren win- ning Grand Champion and Reserve Champion goat at one of the Shows!!!!!!!! Congrat- ulations little Fords. They just happen to be my cousins. Art’s anyway. Folks tell me I can always manage to nd relatives all around here ! Let’s see, I be- lieve Thelma’s son married Bil- ly Epley’s daughter. I missed my friend, Maria Jones today. Her daughter-in- law, Gwen Eberhart , called ear- lier in the morning. Gwen told me she had attended a funeral in the Metroplex last weekend. She asked if I remembered the Methodist Church pastor, Bob Cook, who was here in the late fifties. Unfortunately , I did not recall Mr. Cook. To make a long story short, for you who do remember him, his body was in- terred in the National Cemetery in Dallas. Maria went along and visited with her sister in Grand Prairie. We missed Maria today at Seniors. Condolences to the Cook family. And speaking of winners, I won the rst game of “Baby Bingo” at a shower last Sun- day. I am wearing the pretty pink bracelet I chose as my prize! Congratulations to the young mother to be. Linda Huddleston told me her good news was that she might get out of her cast this coming week. Cecil Funderburgh was with us today, and announced his candidacy for Eastland County Clerk in the coming election. He has been our East- land County Sheriff for the last few years. His wife was ill, and could not make the trip today, but he promised to return soon and bring her with him. Delia was pretty as always this morning. Annie Christian took her car to May for service this week. She was taken out to her sister in law, Theda Busbee’s, house to wait until the car was done. After a delicious lunch, she and Theda played dominoes, until Theda won the ‘sugar game’, making it 3-2 ! Annie said she had a wonderful time. The car place called, she was driven back to the garage, and came home , fully satised with her day. Willa Dean Butler missed church Sunday. Today she told me she had been sick , and her daughter, Jetta, and son, Ger- ald, had been with her. They had their little dog with them and stayed about six days. Sister Joyce has a new TV, but neither she nor son, Don, knew how to customize the remote, so Jim and I went over on Tuesday to help out. We called niece Karen Bell to join us at Whatta Burger. It just so happened, it being M L King’s Birthday, and a semi holiday, she could get off long enough at lunch to join us. She told us about the terrible vandalism at their school the evening before. In spite of all the bad news, we enjoyed our visit, and our lunch. Sindy and Don Collins joined us this AM. Sindy told me she was arranging a booth at June Stone’s Antique / In- surance store. I was in there, Stone’s, one day this week. I told Jim it was the neatest, most interesting, and has the prettiest things I have ever seen any- where around here. You must go in and see it. Skipper announced today that the quilt The Pioneer Quilting Club donated to the Rehab Auction this last week brought more than $1100. Congratula- tions! It was the Dresden Plate pattern. Ike P. Smick was the rst Eastland County Clerk Sally Lamb Hutchinson informed me today. Interesting, that was a long time ago. When Jewell joined us it was the rst time I had heard the surname Smick. But according to Sally, her Grand Dad Smick was here before Jewell. Short Note from Ramona. She told me I couldn’t read it, and I told her, “You forget I taught fourth grade!” “ Yes, Coann surprised us when she came in on Sunday night about 8:00 PM. She only had a short time to visit as she had to go back to work on Thursday morning. But we enjoyed her while she was he re. Wanda’s son David is still holding on. Arley’s grandson , Michael, has entered Cisco College. He really likes it.” Years ago , in De Leon, I taught Mary Ann Stewart in the 5th grade. Now she is Cross Timbers Health Clinics, Inc. “Marketing Director” . She has some good news about health care for all of you. Right now, the clinic will be here at the Higginbotham Foundation Building to give H1N1 u shots , next Thursday starting at about 10:30. Apparently it is free, so if you need the shot, and want to hear more about the health care come by next Thursday and check it out. You may be fa- miliar with the De Leon Clinic, but it has now expanded to both Eastland and Brown counties. It is in the process of also serving Erath County. “I have le arned to seek my happiness by limiting my de- sires, rather than in attempting to satisfy them.” John Stuart Mill Rising Star Senior Citizens News Eastland County Jail Report January 25, 2010 Inmates Housed In Coun- ty Pretrial Class A & B Misde- meanant: 7 males, 1 female - Local Convicted Misdemeanant: 2 males, 1 female-Local, 1 male- Contract Bench Warrants (in-state only): 1 male Pretrial Felons (do no in- clude Parole Violators and state jail felons): 15 males, 2 females Parole Violators or Blue Warrants: 1 male, 1 female Parole Violators with a New Charge: 2 males, 2 females Convicted Felons sentenced to county jail time: 1 male Convicted Felons sen- tenced to TDJC (ID/Boot Camp/SAFP, White Warrant, PIA): 8 males, 1 female Pretrial State Jail Felons (SJF): 9 males, 1 female Convicted SJF sentenced to county jail time: 1 male, 2 females Convicted SJF sentenced to state jail time: 2 males Total: 49 males, 11 females- Local, 2 males- Contract Capacity (All County Fa- cilities): 97 Paper-Ready Inmates (ID/ Boot Camp/White Warrant, PIA) less than 45 days: 6 males The Sons of Confederate Veterans are in your area Contact: Dan Hudson 254-631-8553 Craig Bailey 254-629-8839 Tom Blackwell 254-629-1440 Tommy Thomas 254-647-1777 Be Proud Of Your Heritage 4-104 COLLEGE STATION- County Clerk, Cathy Jentho joined over 400 Clerks’ for the 38th Annual County and District Clerks’ Continuing Education Seminar at the Hilton College Station Hotel and Conference Center on January 11-14, 2010. Rotary Helping People In Haiti On Tuesday, February 9, were looking forward to an entertaining Meet the Author evening with Murray H. Edwards of Abilene. His collection Looking for Lucy Gilligan & Other Stories contains award-winning short stories that range from sweetly nostalgic, through quirky and entertaining, to just plain funny. Mr. Edwards is the son of Weldon Edwards and grew up on the Hereford ranch south of Clyde, so he is well- acquainted with our part of Texas. Many of his ctional characters are a lot like that fellow at the next table having lunch at the local cafe. We hope youll join us at 7:00 PM at the Library, where you may learn who Lucy Gilligan is and why someone is looking for her. You may also hear how an elderly rancher with a bad leg managed to save a cow and newborn calf from a range re, and if you listen closely, you just might learn the difference between a thingamajig and a whatchamacallit. The Cross Plains Public Library is located at 149 N. Main St. in Cross Plains. Well have refreshments for you to enjoy while visiting with Mr. Edwards, and his book will be available for purchase. There is no charge for the event. You can call the Library at 254-725- 7722 for more information. Meet The Author February 9 In Cross Plains The AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service will be providing free income tax preparation services for all middle and low-income taxpayers beginning February 1 through April 15, 2010. In order for this service to continue, volunteers are needed to be trained as tax preparers in Eastland. Training is given in Breckenridge in January, and travel expenses are reimbursed. Volunteers will be expected to answer tax questions and le basic tax forms including the 1040, 1040A and the EZ. Having prepared ones own return would be helpful in preparing you for the training. These folks are your representa- tives and they have been very busy this past year during the completion of our new facility. They have also been very busy obtaining the training they are required to receive each year. This takes time away from their families and sometimes their jobs and they receive no pay. Being on the school board is usually a thankless job. So give them a pat on the back and say thanks when you see them! Speaking of school board mem- bers, the next regularly sched- uled board meeting is February 10, 2010 and one of the agenda items will be to call for an elec- tion on May 8, 2010. I thought it strange that even though the election won’t even be call for until the 10th, the rst day to le for a place on the ballot is Febru- ary 6, 2010. The trustees whose will stand for election should they choose to run again are Bob Powell, Beth Underwood, Don Whitten, and Noah Landa. Noah Landa would be running to complete the last year of the seat vacated Melinda Harrington due to her leaving the district. The other three would be running for full three year terms. Our kids faired pretty well at the Eastland County Stock Show. Congratulations to all who par- ticipated! If your child does not participate in Ag, you might want to think about all the good things they learn regarding responsibil- ity, a good work ethic, working with others, building condence in themselves and much more. It is also a family affair; it in- volves everyone in the family in one way or another. You do not have to live on a farm or know anything about farming or ranch- ing to get involved. It is a great program and Mr. Boles, our Ag teacher, does a great job with our kids. You can see all the results in another article in this paper. The cafeteria will begin having two entrée choices again starting February 1st. The menu will be posted on our website and in the paper. We will also continue to offer secondary students the choice of a salad and baked po- tato or a chef salad. Our cafeteria manager and her crew do a great job providing your children with the best meals possible. They re - ally care about your children. Extended Day will begin at the elementary campus the rst week in February. This is offered to help students prepare for the upcoming T.A.K.S. Testing. Let - ters will be sent out soon inform- ing parents if their child’s need to attend as well as the schedule that will be used for tutoring. Also, a bus will run to take students home after tutoring if your child needs a ride. I also want to put in a good word for our faculty and staff at Gorman ISD. There is not an - other more qualied and caring group of people anywhere and I am very proud to be associated with them. They are great! Your children are in good hands! Remember, it takes community involvement for a school to be successful and you are welcome to get involved at Gorman ISD anytime. Attention: Eastland County Grades 6th-8th! The new Myrtle Wilks Community Center in Cisco is the place to be on February 2! The new Eastland County eTeen Community Bible Study (CBS) will kick off in that amazing facility at 6:30 p.m. on that night, and you do not want to miss it! The address for the Community Center is 1498 I-20 (North Access Road) in Cisco. The strange spelling (eTeen) looks like a typing error, but is correct, and stands for “Early Teen”. Classes are structured very age specic for Junior High School Students. CBS eTeen is an interdenominational, in depth Bible study for all junior high school students (grades 6, 7, and 8) in Eastland County. Come hungry because at 6:30 PM you will enjoy a “full meal deal” while you smell the delicious aroma of chocolate chip cookies baking! Following a wonderful hot meal (and chocolate chip cookies), there will be time for getting acquainted, fun and fellowship, praise and worship and getting into God’s Word. Don’t worry if you do not feel like a Bible scholar you don’t have to be! But you will nd that learning about God and His eternal Word can be more fun and more exciting than you ever dreamed! The meetings will be on each Tuesday night from February 2 through March 31 (except for March 16 which is Spring Break). They begin at 6:30 p.m. and dismiss promptly at 8:30 p.m. This ministry began in 1975, the result of heartfelt prayer of many. Classes have now spread throughout the United States and even internationally. CBS is designed not to compete with your local church, but rather to complement it, and God has blessed it mightily! Our goal is to encourage class members to belong to and actively support their own local church and to be servants and leaders in their congregations and communities. Teaching Director for the Eastland Co. eTeen is Tim McKinney, Associate Teaching Director is Nina Jo Anderson, the Coordinator is Jill Fields, and Prayer Chairman is Sherry Wright. Please invite your parents to come in on kickoff night to meet the leadership team and learn more about this ministry. There is a $10.00 enrollment fee which will pay for your tee shirt and Bible. Also, ask your parents to pray and ask the Lord if He is calling them to serve in this ministry. If you have any questions, please call Tim at (325) 665- 0189; Jill at (254) 442-4339; Nina Jo at (254) 631-8320; or Sherry at (254) 631-8525.
