Instruction for Hold Cleaning after CEMENT, CEMENT CLINKER, GYPSUM IN BULK ...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Rev No.0 Daiichi Chuo Kisen Kaisha 1st July 2013 Marine Affairs Section Instruction for Hold Cleaning after Cement Cargoes FOREWORD This is to provide Masters with instruction for hold cleaning after Cement Cargoes Because this kind of cargoes hardens after chemical reaction with water, it is essential to carry out proper hold cleaning to maintain ship’s condition in good order What is Cement Cargoes? The cargoes listed below are considered to react with water and harden but not exhaustive Cement Cement Clinker Gypsum (Cement) (Cement Clinker) (Gypsum) What is the Problem? Insufficient hold cleaning after discharging the cargoes may cause following problems; - Hardened cement sticks to hold structures and non-smooth surface which may fail hold inspection for further shipment -1- Rev No.0 Daiichi Chuo Kisen Kaisha - Cargo residue hardens inside of hold bilge line which may cause malfunction of valves and/or eductor line Hold Preparation before loading - The hold and bilge well must be completely dry - Residues from previous cargoes such as sugar and fertilizers may cause problems and result in a failed hold inspection - Non-return valves in the drain and bilge system must be confirmed as operational - Cold ballast water needs to be avoided in tanks adjacent to holds During loading / After loading / During navigation / During discharging - The atmosphere in the cargo holds should be kept as dry as possible during loading - If possible, main deck, hatch coamings, drain channel and hatch covers should be swept and cleaned by compressed air after loading - Condensation should be avoided especially during navigation and discharging due to taking cold sea water in ballast tanks Hold cleaning after discharging It is highly recommended to follow cleaning procedure below unless an owner and operator instruct (1) At the final stage of discharging, discharging operation shall be closely watched by ship’s crew in order to request stevedores to collect as much cargo residue as possible and fill into grabs for landing, especially behind side frame, pipes, and hold ladders (2) Hatch coamings and covers, and bulkheads must be thoroughly swept or cleaned by compressed air (3) All cement dust from dry cleaning and all cargo residue from tank top must be swept up, collected and removed -2- Rev No.0 Daiichi Chuo Kisen Kaisha (4) After dry cleaning, the hold must be washed down by high-pressure water, if available, with its adequate amount of Sea Water Chemicals and/or high pressure cleaning pumps should be used whenever available (5) All areas need to be rinsed out with Fresh Water as usual (6) To avoid clogging of the bilge/drain system, portable diagram pumps preferably may be used to discharge washed water (7) The bilge system must be flushed for a minimum of 15-30 minutes to avoid cargo residues settling and gradually blocking the system (8) All valves in the drain/bilge system must be checked End -3-
