convey meaning It means that vocabulary plays an important part in language to make a language meaningful It is difficult to master a language without mastering or understanding certain numbers of vocabulary Without a sufficient vocabulary, someone cannot communicate effectively or express the ideas in both oral and written forms Having extensive vocabulary knowledge allows the students to acquire a particular language faster It is because vocabulary mastery is a primary foundation for constructing the language and English is not an exception Unfortunately, in facts, there are many issues in learning English vocabulary The students are still having difficulties becoming competent in vocabulary mastery, which mostly results from their vocabulary retention Some of them are lazy learning by heart Others really find it very hard to memorize words while many learners naturally like to learn word list by rote for examination, which will disappear from their memories very soon To some extent, those problems occur since the teachers continue using traditional techniques, in which only words are provided for the students Moreover, the teachers are having less creativity because the same method is applied every time teaching vocabulary, which is monotonous Therefore, the demand for innovative teaching techniques and methods to assist students in collecting, using, storing, and retrieving words in long-term memory is critical In fact, in this day and age, under the era of technological bloom and advances in mobile applications, mobile learning apps strikingly assist vocabulary retention, especially difficult words To be more precise, students at all levels can benefit from learning vocabulary through mobile apps Language learners could feel more motivated and incentivized to focus on learning, making better progress in vocabulary memorization Teaching and learning English are certainly facilitated by many famous tools such as Kahoot, Quizlet, Educandy, Quizizz, and so forth in order to engage their students to learn and review lexical resources Up to the present, a number of teaching experiences have mentioned applying those platforms to teaching English vocabulary; however, there have been lack of empirical innovations to dig out the effectiveness of “Educandy application” on students’ vocabulary retention, especially for 10th graders who are the first students to be implemented 2018 General Education Program at upper secondary level In essence, Educandy is an instructional-based application with a motto "making learning sweeter" It is used to create educational vocabulary games and offers a variety of fun learning models With Educandy, the teachers can create interactive exercises to be carried out inside or outside the classroom Furthermore, Educandy is particularly beneficial for mixed-level classes because it can also create a dynamic way to have class competitions For any level of learners, it has potential to be used for self-study, as teachers decide which content to use in the activities As a matter of fact, this platform can better students’ learning vocabulary and motivate them a lot, which contributes to their better progress in lexical retention Additionally, when learning with this app, students have the chance to work in groups, pairs and comment on each other's work, which improves their capacity to collaborate and communicate, learn independently and solve problems These meet the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program of MOET in terms of fostering the students' core competencies With this consideration in mind, we decided to conduct a study on the topic “Utilizing Educandy application to enhance 10th graders’ vocabulary retention” for our teaching experience Aims of the study - To explore the real situation of teaching and learning vocabulary in some high schools in Quynh Luu - To investigate the effectiveness of Educandy application on enhancing vocabulary retention of 10th graders - To dig out the effectiveness of Educandy platform on motivating 10th graders to study vocabulary - To help 10th graders study English vocabulary better - To develop students’ core competencies Scope of the study This research was conducted with 10th graders in some high schools in Quynh Luu (Quynh Luu 2, Quynh Luu 3, Nguyen Duc Mau) during 2022- 2023 school year The study focuses on the effectiveness of Educandy application on enhancing their vocabulary retention Method of the study This mixed methods study integrates both quantitative and qualitative data collection tools and analysis, including sets of questionnaire, pre-test and post-test PART B: CONTENT CHAPTER 1: THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL BACKGROUND Theoretical background 1.1 Vocabulary 1.1.1 Definitions of vocabulary Vocabulary is one of the language elements There is a variety of definitions about it As stated in Cambridge Dictionary, vocabulary is defined “all the words that exist in a particular language or subject” Ur (2003) states that “Vocabulary can be defined, roughly, as the words we teach in the foreign language However, a new item of vocabulary may be more than just a single word: for example, post office, and mother-in-law, which are made up of two or three words but express a single idea A useful convention is to cover all such cases by talking about vocabulary items “rather than words” The word is the smallest meaningful unit of language used for making phrases and sentences that usually represents an object, idea, action, idiom, etc The vocabulary is viewed as a complex of form and meaning Vocabulary is not mentioned, but it is implicit that vocabulary is needed to communicate Vocabulary is more important than grammar because we can speak without correct grammar structure but we cannot speak without the vocabulary Words are the root of communication and a strong vocabulary improves all areas of communication such as, listening, speaking, writing, and reading All languages involve of words According to Richards (2002), vocabulary is one of the most important components of language and one of things that to be noticed by the linguists This means vocabulary is the main element in the process of learning, mastering and using language People cannot communicate effectively to express their ideas or give information if they not have sufficient vocabulary Knowing a vocabulary item entails understanding its meaning, pronunciation, use in context, register (formal or informal), spelling, and collocations (the tendency of words to occur with other words) From these definitions, vocabulary is all words in a language which is used by people to convey ideas or feeling It is used to communicate in oral and written language In order that, students must be able to be flexible in using words that they recognize and understand Students' ability to recall words at will and recognize them in spoken and written form is the primary goal of the vocabulary learning process To sum up, vocabulary is knowledge of how the words fit into the world 1.1.2 Techniques of teaching vocabulary In any language, vocabulary also plays a very important role In teaching and learning English, vocabulary is a factor that creates the knowledge system, conditions and modes of forming communication skills A language is a collection of all vocabulary, unable to understand a language without understanding and mastering vocabulary Therefore, learning vocabulary and practicing vocabulary skills are the leading factors in acquiring and imparting a language in general as well as English in general As a result, knowing the techniques of teaching vocabulary is also important In order to improve vocabulary skills, teachers should employ a variety of techniques Some techniques of teaching vocabulary (Elyas & Alfaki, 2014) are as follows: Translation – it is a simple and quick way used by teachers to reach the goal of English language learning When students want to change their native language into the target language, sometimes translating some words is difficult because they have no structural equivalent in the two languages Giving examples – in this technique, the sentences should have clear meanings so that they can be used to teach the meaning of the new vocabulary Realia – in this technique, teachers can teach new items of vocabulary through the real object in the classroom activity This technique is also considered to give students more advantages to understand the words However, this technique has a limitation, in which some objects cannot be brought into the class Pictures and mime – teachers can use both pictures and mimes to teach the meaning of new words The object of pictures could be photos, wall pictures, flashcards, etc Moreover, the use of mime is also regarded as a useful medium to explain action verbs such as swimming, sitting, walking, etc These concepts are not difficult to explain They can pretend to them in front of the class 1.1.3 Principles of teaching vocabulary In order to achieve a certain level of vocabulary acquisition, learners have to use various strategies to be successful in their learning process Besides, teachers also hold an immense responsibility in ensuring the success of acquisition among learners This is because learners are particularly interested in receiving vocabulary instruction Thus, vocabulary acquisition depends not only on how learners learn, but also how they are taught Consequently, many scholars have come out with teaching and learning principles for teachers and learners to teach and learn vocabulary respectively Of all the principles introduced, ten principles were found to be essential in ensuring vocabulary acquisition (Journal, Arab & et all , 2017) Principle 1: Select appropriate words Words that are considered to be appropriate are words that are comprehensible by learners and are coherent to their proficiency level In the case of vocabulary acquisition, the input needs to convey meaning and be comprehensible so that learners are able to attach form to meaning The meaning of a new word may be more readily inferred by learners if they could completely comprehend the larger input set in which this word appears Besides being comprehensive, words chosen should also be advantageous for students Useful words are words that learners need to use often in their language use situations Principle 2: Focus on different aspects of words Vocabulary acquisition will be more effective when a particular word is learned based on several aspects The reason is that a word carries so much more than just its meaning For example, amongst other things, students can learn a word’s stress (accent), pronunciation (phoneme), its collocations and word family members, its grammatical patterns and word parts of speech Learning different aspects of words may help learners to enrich their knowledge on vocabulary Principle 3: Progress from less demanding to more demanding vocabulary-related activities Learners should not be expected to use new words in activities that require them to know every aspect of the words This is inconsistent with how the process of language vocabulary acquisition must take place Instead, the process of learning vocabulary needs to be implemented step by step, and learners are encouraged not to immediately use new words in vocabulary-oriented activities Principle 4: Limit forced semantic elaboration during the initial stages of learning new words Following the third principle above, teachers should limit the explanation of meaning of the new words to just the basic meaning, as to avoid confusion and misunderstanding from learners of the new language For example, teachers should not explain the word “bear” by giving a complicated unrelated definition to the students like “a person who expects the price of stocks to go down and who sells them to avoid losing money” which is a term under “finance” and a “noun” Instead, teachers should limit the meaning of “bear” to just “one of a group of large and heavy animals that have thick hair and sharp claws and that can stand on two legs like a person” which is as a “noun” and “something that is difficult to or deal with” which is a “verb” and not to relate to any other complicated meaning that is out of the learners’ lexicon or understanding Principle 5: Encourage interest among students during learning process Vocabulary teaching and learning should be interesting and enjoyable so as to keep motivation high while encouraging students to develop strategies that they can continue to use once they leave the classroom Besides giving learners some opportunities to enjoy their learning process, teachers should also take learners’ perspective into consideration when it comes to preparing the learning materials In other words, learners should be given a chance to say what they like and dislike Principle 6: Accommodate use of contextual cues Vocabulary can be taught better through the use of contextual cues It helps to ease many teachers in explaining the meaning of new words to learners Teachers can use materials such as realia, pictures, past experiences and examples to depict the connection between the new words and their meaning Principle 7: Expose learners to the use of dictionary A dictionary is one of the important references in learning new words, especially for new learners There are many types of dictionary in the market including picture dictionaries which are targeted toward the young learners who are still learning to expand their vocabulary in both their mother tongue and second languages It is up to teachers and learners which dictionary would benefit them the most Principle 8: Exercise repetition by introducing words frequently inside the module The more frequently language learners are exposed to a particular vocabulary, the more likely they are to remember it This is one of the basic principles in memorising new words as with repetition, learners would be able to memorise and produce the word appropriately when they understood the meaning Most words that are taught will be lost to the Forgetting Curve, it is therefore essential that the new words are repeated soon after the initial learning and repeated at spaced intervals many times and in many contexts thereafter to cement them in memory Principle 9: Promote deliberate vocabulary acquisition Deliberate vocabulary acquisition is the stage where the teachers introduce new words to the learners and be sure to explain it thoroughly so that the learners are able to understand the meaning of that word and memorize it Thus, in learning vocabulary, the active, constructive elaboration of the word- meaning during the second language acquisition influences its subsequent recall during reading Principle 10: Expose learners with exercises and activities other than memorizing words Instead of just sticking to the conventional teaching methods like reading textbook, referring to a dictionary for meaning or memorising new words, teachers could use their imagination to encourage learners to learn new words in different types of activities For example, using games as part of the activity would not only help with the memorization of new words, but at the same time help the learners to retain better attention on the learning process, and release some of the build-up stress in them, especially in a classroom consisted of learners from various background Besides, it is suggested that in a foreign language class, a teacher could make use of comics, and have small group discussions take place between two or more students, after which the teacher could call upon a discussion from each group to report briefly on its observation 1.1.4 Vocabulary retention 4.2.2.3 Participants No Participants Number of participants 12 12 10 Teachers of English in Quynh Luu high school Teachers of frequency of teachers’ applying Educandy to teaching vocabulary The information of the survey is described as follow: 50% 40% 35% 40% 30% 20% 20% 5% 10% 0% never seldom usually always Figure 11 : The frequency of using Educandy to teach vocabulary From the figure, we can see that Educandy platform is not really a popularly used tool in teaching English in high school due to the fact that the largest proportion of respondents never utilize, followed by seldom option Only 5% of them have a habit of applying this app while one-fifth know and usually take advantage of this in their teaching b retention 45 It can be seen from the table that the majority of the teachers suggested that it is urgent to apply Educandy platform The average point of this question is 3.36 In fact, in the fast- change world with the blooming of technology, teaching foreign language methodology should be changed Traditionally, students are commonly exposed to learning vocabulary using the traditional teaching methods such as rehearsing, writing words on papers or learning passively through the teacher’s explanations In this passive learning situation, students have limited opportunities to engage in meaningful learning activities when listening to their teacher, which does not assist in vocabulary retention In order to enhance the vocabulary retention of the students, they need to be engaged in the learning activities One of the ways to encourage participation is by using language games for vocabulary learning In vocabulary learning through games, the students need to participate in a number of interesting learning activities through a variety of language games Among popular games, such as Kahoot, Wordwall, Quilet, Educandy is a newly interesting option for teachers to consider so as to bring students attractiveness and motivation Hence, the use of this tool in vocabulary teaching is compelling c The feasibility of utilizing Educandy app to enhance 10 graders’ vocabulary retention agreed that it is very feasible to apply Educandy to boost 10 graders’ lexicon memory with the average point of 3.75 In fact, most of students possess their own smartphones or computers Besides, the Wifi network is connected not only at home but also at school These are beneficial for them to make full use of educational platforms in teaching and learning English Furthermore, Educandy is an instructional-based application with a motto "making learning sweeter” It also has an attractive and colorful appearance and is easy to understand for new users due to a simple model Those make students feel happy, enthusiastic and motivated during the learning process because students' interest in the Educandy platform is quite high Therefore, using this tool in teaching is practicable 46 PART C: CONCLUSION Recapitulation Teaching for students’ vocabulary retention is always a matter of concern for many English teachers, because vocabulary development is critical for learners to enhance their language proficiency Nowadays, learning vocabulary has become easier than ever thanks to the use of digital tools In deed, with the demand for innovative teaching techniques along with the emerges of technology, various digital game-based language learning has been developed and Educandy is proved to be an effective tool Via Educandy, many intentional vocabulary learning activities expose learners to multiple interactions with the vocabulary, which is necessary for retention Besides, students demonstrated substantial improvements in vocabulary learning and retention, as well as increased enjoyment and motivation to study vocabulary When learning with this app, the students always show their high interest and get better marks in the test In addition, students have the opportunity to work in groups, pairs and comment on each other's work, which develops collaborative capacity, communication capacity, self-learning ability, problem solving competence capacity to use language effectively These capacities meet the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program of MOET in terms of fostering the students' core competencies In short, all of the participants highly appreciated this technique of teaching and learning Although there are some current hurdles in applying Educandy app such as network connection and lack of the electronic devices like laptops or smartphones, we assert that this has made a great contribution to our pedagogical methodology Suggestions In connection with the results of the study, some suggestions have been made for teachers and students as follow: 2.1 For teachers It stands to reason that applying Educandy to teaching vocabulary for 10th graders is beneficial Students and teachers should make full use of this digital platform as a source of pedagogical methodology to create more interesting activities for English classes However, there is something teachers ought to take into account when they design the exercises for students To begin with, teachers have to acquire the ways of using this app perfectly, such as, procedure of designation Next, the teachers should control the students’ participation regularly and strictly In fact, students easily distract from the lessons when using smartphones with network connection, for example, playing games or surfing Facebook 47 Besides, the electronic devices play the most important role in learning English with Educandy The school should install the stable wifi network, TVs, projectors and computers for teaching and learning English Last but not least, for the time being, learning vocabulary has become easier than ever thanks to the use of various digital tools, therefore, teachers should make full use of many of them flexibly to motivate students and avoid only utilizing some certain apps, which makes learners easily get bored 2.2 For students Students should aware that learning vocabulary development is critical for them to enhance their language proficiency Hence, their full participation in teaching and learning activities is of great importance Furthermore, the students play an important part in success and effectiveness of the lessons Therefore, it is required that all of students should be aware of their responsibility to join seriously 48 REFERENCES Elyas, T., & Alfaki, I (2014) Teaching vocabulary: The relationship between
