it also means being brave enough to take actions and take responsibility From that, one’s kindness is formed and developed Therefore, it is very important to train and educate students about the sense of responsibility as well as kindness Stemming from the practical requirement of innovating teaching methods and from the goal of the 2018 general education program on developing core competencies and qualities for high school students as well as starting from the actual capacity of students at Dien Chau High School, I have decided to choose the topic "Educating the sense of responsibility and kindness for 10th graders via project activities in teaching Tieng Anh 10 (Global Success)” Aims and Significance of the study The study is aimed at: - Designing project activities in some units of English 10 (global success) - Providing tudents the opportunity to apply practical knowledge related to the topic they have studied in doing project - Educating the qualities of responsibility and kindness for students to themselves, their family, their school and community I would like to contribute my initiative to teaching the new English program to promote the advantages of this teaching method, as well as bring positive changes to the modern trend of learning English and create motivation in learning English for high school students Scope of the study In the study, I would like to concentrate on educating the sense of responsibility and kindness for students, not to focus on other qualities Furthermore, I also try to educate the sense of responsibility and kindness for students via some project activities based on the topics in the book Tieng Anh 10 (Global success), not the topics outside the current textbook Methods of the study The author intends to apply conventional research methods in educational scientific research: Theoretical research methods; investigation methods; expert method and pedagogical experimental method In this study, the theoretical background relies on the research of some previous researchers concerned with the subject The instruments for data collection and data analysis are interviews, questionnaires, and classroom observation In addition, the author gets opinions from high school teachers with experience; and insults experts about the process of building projects The pedagogical experiment is conducted in Dien Chau High to evaluate the effectiveness of project activities for educating students’ sense of responsibility in teaching English PART 2: CONTENT CHAPTER 1: THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL BASIS 1.1 Theoretical basis 1.1.1 Requirements for quality and contribution of English subject in fostering students’ quality The requirements to be achieved in the general education program are the results that students need to achieve in terms of quality and competence after each grade level and each educational activity in each class and grade level Students’ specific requirements must be met Based on the qualities mentioned in the 2018 National Curriculum, all subjects in high schools must contribute to helping students form and foster those qualities according to the characteristics of each subject English is one of the subjects that directly form and develop all five qualities across all levels of education With the main qualities that are uniform for all subjects, the English Subject Program only states the general requirements for the whole subject from a general perspective and is associated with the characteristics of the subject The specific requirements for the qualifications and the key qualities for each level have been outlined in the overall 2018 National Curriculum In each subject and educational activity, these key qualities have different specific manifestations and are formed and developed in different ways Stemming from the specifics of the subject, the high school curriculum pays attention to the requirements to achieve the main qualities for students At the high school level, through English subject, students understand and respect the diversity of cultures, and at the same time, initially reflect the cultural values of Vietnam in English; develop the qualities of patriotism, hard work, honesty, kindness and responsibility to the environment and community Among five qualities, in this writing, I would like to focus on kindness and responsibility qualities 1.1.2 Concept of the qualities “responsibility” and “kindness” • Concept of responsibility Responsibility is a quality that should be presented in every person Living responsibility is fulfilling obligations and obligations to society, school, family and oneself; and has to take responsibility for their actions, so it is very important to practice responsibility for students The responsibility of a person is something that he or she must ensure that an outcome must occur in the future in an accurate and timely manner (whether consciously or unconsciously) Failure to fulfill the responsibility is a mistake, and that person must bear the bad consequences that occur due to that fault Therefore, living responsibly means being responsible to yourself, to those around you, to what you do, to what you say Live responsibly with yourself, with your own life and never let those around you hate your free and irresponsible lifestyle! When you have a sense of responsibility for yourself, you will be stronger, more mature as well as more resilient in life, will overcome difficulties in life Live responsibly with your beloved ones, friends, and those around you, don't neglect or be indifferent to their suffering and loss Responsibility is the substance that binds relationships in social life together Take responsibility for your own words, paying attention to the meaning of your words Consider choosing the right words so as not to hurt someone, then regret it later! Live responsibly, work is responsibly you, your loved ones and those around you will always be happy The expressions of responsibility are: + Being responsible for yourself; + Having a sense of hygiene, physical exercise, and health care; + Having a sense of orderly activities; + Having a sense of preserving and preserving personal and family belongings + Not leaving excess food and drink; consciously save money, electricity and water in the family; + Being responsible to the school and society; + Voluntarily and strictly implementing the rules of the school and the regulations and conventions of the collective; keeping clean; protecting public property; + Not causing disorder, quarrel or fight; + Reminding friends to abide by school rules; remind relatives to abide by sense of care and protection of trees and useful animals; + Having a sense of keeping the environment clean, not littering indiscriminately; + Disagreeing with acts of encroachment on nature; • Concept of kindness Our life always has good, precious things and one of those beautiful precious things is kindness Kindness is the love between people and people, good qualities, respect, help and care for each other in times of trouble and difficulty Kindness is power in both the literal and figurative sense Kindness is not something too big, but in life, kindness is tolerance, the way that people give love to each other Kindness is always in each person and comes from the heart, the heart with the desire to help others without expecting anything in return A kind person who has love and compassion is the one with a beautiful heart and qualities In today’s society, kindness is also the act of helping people between people, bringing a love full of life in a hurry but still enough warmth in each person’s heart Every individual and group in this life is a cell of society All of them have a kindness in order to help the difficult people out there have a better life and warm their cold hearts which have been hurt for so long Kindness helps each person get closer and closer to each other to see that this life still has many good things Each person who spreads good things to others with kindness is how much happiness appears Because it is kindness that is important in each person and kindness is the bricks that build a happy life and society Kindness always brings laughter to each person The expressions of kindness are: + Love, care and taking care of family members; + Love for the friends and teachers; encouraging friends; + Respect for elders; helping children, the elderly, the sick and the disabled; + Knowing how to share with people in difficult circumstances, people in remote areas, people with disabilities and people affected by natural disasters; + Respect for the differences of friends in the class in terms of dress, personality and family background; + Trying not to discriminate or divide friends; + Being ready to forgive the friends’ guilty acts 1.1.3 The importance of educating qualities “responsibility” and “kindness” in education First, it must be affirmed that educating qualities “responsibility” and “kindness” for students is really important Education is intended to form morals through the process, knowing well, loving good, and behaving well so that good morals can be implemented into habits of mind, heart and hands Through doing projects, it cultivates values which include components of knowledge, awareness or willingness, and actions to carry out these values The value of education that needs to be strengthened is the character value of kindness and responsibility Kindness is a condition and action that can be accepted by society because it deserves to be accepted humanity and can provide comfort for them; Kindness helps children to show concern for the welfare and feelings of others (Marzuki, 2017: 58) Kindness can include behaviors such as being considerate, polite, helpful and understanding of others Shows compassionate concern, friendship, and generosity Treat others as you want to be treated (Abourjilie, 2006: 15) Therefore, the value of good character education can play a role in inhibiting the emergence of evil intentions or immoral actions because it can provide comfort and respect for fellow humans In addition, responsibility is a person's attitude and behavior to carry out his duties and obligations, which he or she should for himself or herself, society, the environment (natural, social, and cultural), and his or her nation Besides, responsibility can be interpreted as an act carried out by each individual based on his obligations and hearts, namely an attitude that shows that a person has a high caring nature (Sulaeman, Goziyah, Purawinangun, & Noermanzah, 2020) Several indicators of the character of responsibility include being reliable in carrying out obligations and duties It shows reliability and consistency in speech and behavior, being responsible for one’s own actions and committed to be actively involved in the community (Abourjilie, 2006: 15) Thus, the value of of responsibility can awaken a person to learning are: acting as a self-directed learner, working as a collaborator, and being the knowledge manager It is attitude and behavior that is reliable and full of commitment in carrying out its obligations to oneself, others, and the surrounding community 1.1.4 Concept of project-based learning Project-based learning is a not new method of learning in the field of English as a Second Language and is believed to be suitable for teaching and learning English in the 21st century Sepuldeva (2016: 1) states that project- based learning is a teaching method that serves a student's problem While solving the problem, students must gather information from a number of sources At the end of this approach, students must have a product or performance Another statement is offered by Poonpon (2017) states that project-based learning is appropriate for the need to teach and learn English because project-based learning is a guided approach to the learning context by presenting learners with problems to be solved or products for development Besides, Krajcik and Phyllis (2005: 318) defines that Project-based learning is that students build their information based on learning situations to solve problems in order to gain a deeper understanding of learning Solomon (2003) points out that project-based learning focuses on learning through long- term, student-centered, interdisciplinary, and integrated activities in realworld situations It is also supported by Fried-Booth (2002) that says project-based learning is student-centered and driven by the need to create an end product Project- based learning is a means of making end products in real-world with confidence and independence According to Simpson (2011), in project-based learning, students are completely responsible for study They work cooperatively to solve the problem Project-based learning is concerned with learning based on real-world problems and challenges that require students to work in teams through meaningful activities and create an end product Furthermore, Phillips et al (1999) add that Project-based learning consists of easily identifiable units of work with the beginning, middle, and end which are linked to form a tangible end product, in which students can gain a real sense of achievement Project-based learning is an individual or group activity performed over a specified period of time, resulting in a product, presentation, or performance Based on all the definitions above, it can be concluded that project-based learning is a model of classroom activity that gives students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and practice their skills through work individually or collaboratively 1.1.5 Significance of project-based learning Project- based learning gives some benefits in teaching English as Foreign language Here are several benefits of implementing project- based learning in the process of English teaching and learning as follows (Larasati, 2015:30) Project- based learning increases autonomous learning Project- based learning develops higher order thinking skills Project- based learning boosts motivation Project- based learning is matching the mixed- ability classes According to the Harmer and Alison (2014) retrieved from Putri (2018:63) the advantages of Project- based learning are: Project- based learning improves in academic achievement Project- based learning enhances wider skills such as group work skills, communication skills, and problem solving skills Project- based learning increases the students’ motivation and enjoyment Project- based learning has diverse learners who come from various backgrounds of knowledge that can construct their knowledge each other and other learning styles from students in the classroom Project- based learning enables outreach people who expert of the certain subject to bring students into deeper understanding for gaining information 1.1.6 The roles of the teacher and students in project-based learning The roles of the teachers in project-based learning are different from that of teachers in traditional learning In the traditional teaching and learning process, teachers play an important role, teacher-centered in teaching and learning activity Their main responsibility is to impart knowledge and transmit the information directly to students So, the teachers spend more time explaining the material for students; and the students tend to be passive However, in project- based learning, teachers are only guides and advisers, not “hands-on” for their students It requires students to be active learners It concentrates more on the students than on the teacher Therefore, the teacher spends more time monitoring and coaching the SOME REAL ACTIONS OF STUDENTS TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT
