is adapted from the theory of RDs by McGuigan (2007) who classified RDs into categories Both qualitative and quantitative methods are mainly used to analyze the data The aim of the study is to work out the frequency of occurrence of RDs in five PDT’s speeches in the first two years of presidency lu an from 2017 to 2019 and then to discuss the underlying usage patterns of these va RDs The findings show that there are 16 RDs in all four groups being n tn to employed in PDT’s speeches Regarding RDs helping with Strategy, Trump ie gh frequently used metaphor, hyperbole, antithesis, simile, and rhetorical p question With regard to RDs helping with Organization, Trump utilized enumeration, parallelism, and antanagoge nl w anadiplosis/conduplicatio, d oa Considering RDs helping with Style, Trump tended to apply epithet, an lu synecdoche/metonymy, polysyndeton, and hyperbaton In terms of RDs helping with Analysis of Reading, Trump was more likely to employ nf va anaphora/epistrophe/symploce, personification, and parataxis Another lm ul interesting finding found in the study is that in comparison with the other z at nh oi three groups of devices, Trump had a strong tendency towards Style RDs which preferred with the predominance of epithet Therefore, the close z analysis unfolds the pedagogical practicality of these devices, which can be a @ m co l gm significant contribution towards teaching and learning English in Vietnam an Lu n va ac th si iv TABLE OF CONTENTS STATEMENT OF AUTHORSHIP i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ii ABSTRACT iii TABLE OF CONTENTS iv tonight are two fathers and two mothers: Evelyn Rodriguez, Freddy Cuevas, Elizabeth Alvarado, and Robert Mickens Their two teenage daughters — Kayla Cuevas and Nisa Mickens — were close friends on Long Island But in September 2016, on the eve of Nisa’s 16th Birthday — such a happy [Epit.] time it should have been lu — neither of them came home These two precious an [Epit.] girls were brutally murdered while walking va n together in their hometown Six members of the savage MS-13 gang have been gh tn to [T3.S180-S181] p ie charged with Kayla and Nisa’s murders Many of these gang members took advantage of glaring loopholes in our oa nl w laws to enter the country as [Simi.] illegal, unaccompanied [Epit.] alien minors, and wound up in d Evelyn, Elizabeth, Freddy, and Robert: Tonight, everyone u nf va [T3.S182-S185] an lu Kayla and Nisa’s high school in this chamber is praying for you Everyone in America ll oi m is grieving for you Please stand Thank you very much I want you to know that 320 million hearts [Synec.] are z at nh [T3.S186-S188] right now breaking [Person.] + [Meta.] for you We love gm @ [T3.S189] z you Thank you While we cannot imagine the depths of that kind of l m co sorrow, we can make sure that other families never have to endure this kind of pain [Hyper.] an Lu n va ac th si 115 [T3.S190-S191] Tonight, I am calling on Congress to finally close the deadly loopholes that have allowed MS-13, and other criminal gangs, to break into our country We have proposed new [Epit.] legislation that will fix our immigration laws and support our ICE and Border Patrol agents — these are great [Epit.] people; these are great, great [Epit.] people — that work so hard in the midst of such danger so that this can never happen again lu [T3.S192-S193] The United States is a compassionate [Epit.] + [Person.] an nation We are proud that we more than any other va n country anywhere in the world to help the needy, the to gh tn struggling, and the underprivileged [Enum.] all over the p ie world But as President of the United States, my highest [Epit.] [T3.S194-S196] nl w loyalty, my greatest [Epit.] compassion, my constant d oa [Epit.] concern is for America’s children, America’s an lu struggling workers, and America’s forgotten communities u nf va [Enum.] I want our youth to grow up to achieve great [Epit.] things I want our poor to have their chance to rise ll So, tonight, I am extending an open hand [Meto.] to work oi m [T3.S197-S199] members of z at nh with both parties, Democrats and Republicans, to protect our citizens of every background, z gm @ color, religion, and creed [Enum.] My duty, and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber, is to l m co defend Americans, to protect their safety, their families, their communities, and their right [Enum.] to the an Lu n va ac th si 116 American Dream [Meta.] Because Americans are dreamers [Meta.] + [Anadi.] too [T3.S200-S202] Here tonight is one leader in the effort to defend our country, Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Celestino Martinez He goes by “CJ” “CJ” served 15 years in the Air Force before becoming an ICE agent and spending the last 15 years fighting gang violence and [Polys.] getting dangerous [Epit.] criminals off of our lu streets an At one point, MS-13 leaders ordered CJ’s murder And [T3.S203-S207] va n they wanted it to happen quickly But he did not cave to to gh tn threats or to fear Last May, he commanded an operation p ie to track down gang members on Long Island His team has arrested nearly 400, including more than 220 MS-13 oa nl w gang members [T3.S208-S211] And I have to tell you, what the Border Patrol and ICE d an lu have done — we have sent thousands and thousands and u nf va thousands of [Polys.] + [Hyper.] MS-13 horrible [Epit.] people out of this country or into our prisons So I just ll oi m want to congratulate you, CJ You’re a brave [Epit.] guy [T3.S212-S217] z at nh Thank you very much And I asked CJ, “What’s the secret?” He said, “We’re z just tougher than they are.” And I like that answer Now @ l gm let’s get Congress to send you — and all of the people in m co this great chamber have to it; we have no choice CJ, we’re going to send you reinforcements, and we’re going an Lu to send them to you quickly It’s what you need n va ac th si 117 [T3.S218-S220] Over the next few weeks, the House and Senate will be voting on an immigration reform package In recent months, my administration has met extensively with both Democrats and Republicans to craft a bipartisan approach to immigration reform Based on these discussions, we presented Congress with a detailed [Epit.] proposal that should be supported by both parties as [Simi.] a fair [Epit.] compromise, one where nobody gets everything lu they want, but where our country gets the critical reforms an it needs and must have [Anta.] va n [T3.S221-S223] Here are the four pillars of our plan: The first pillar of our to gh tn framework generously offers a path [Meta.] to citizenship p ie for 1.8 million illegal immigrants who were brought here by their parents at a young [Epit.] age That covers almost oa nl w three times more people than the previous administration covered Under our plan, those who meet education and d an lu work requirements, and show good [Epit.] moral u nf va character, will be able to become full citizens of the United States over a 12-year period ll The second pillar fully secures the border That means oi m [T3.S224-S226] z at nh building a great [Epit.] wall on the southern border, and it means hiring more heroes, like CJ, to keep our z gm @ communities safe Crucially, our plan closes the terrible [Epit.] loopholes exploited by criminals and terrorists to l m co enter our country, and it finally ends the horrible and dangerous [Epit.] practice of catch and release [Anti.] + an Lu [Person.] n va ac th si 118 [T3.S227-S228] The third pillar ends the visa lottery, a program that randomly hands out [Meto.] green cards without any regard for skill, merit, or the safety of American people [Enum.] It’s time to begin moving towards a merit-based [Epit.] immigration system, one that admits people who are skilled, who want to work, who will contribute to our society, and who will love and respect our country [Paral.] lu [T3.S229-S232] The fourth and final pillar [Enum.] protects the nuclear an family by ending chain migration Under the current va n broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually to gh tn unlimited numbers [Hyper.] of distant relatives Under p ie our plan, we focus on the immediate [Epit.] family by limiting sponsorships to spouses and minor children oa nl w (Applause.) This vital [Epit.] reform is necessary, not just for our economy, but for our security and for the future of d In recent weeks, two terrorist attacks in New York were u nf va [T3.S233-S234] an lu America made possible by the visa lottery and chain migration In ll oi m the age of terrorism, these programs present risks we can [T3.S235-S236] z at nh just no longer afford It’s time to reform these outdated immigration rules, and z gm @ finally bring our immigration system into the 21st century These four pillars represent a down-the-middle l m co [Epit.] compromise, and one that will create a safe, modern, and lawful [Epit.] immigration [Cond.] system an Lu n va ac th si 119 [T3.S237-S238] For over 30 years, Washington [Meto.] has tried and failed to solve this problem This Congress can be the one that finally makes it happen [T3.S239-S240] Most importantly, these four pillars will produce legislation that fulfills my ironclad pledge [Meta.] to sign a bill that puts America first So let’s come together, set politics aside, and finally get the job done [Paral.] [T3.S241-S246] These reforms will also support our response to the lu terrible [Epit.] crisis of opioid and drug addiction Never an before has it been like it is now [Hyperba.] It is terrible va n We have to something about it In 2016, we lost to gh tn 64,000 Americans to drug overdoses — 174 deaths per p ie day; per hour We must get much tougher on drug dealers and pushers if we are going to succeed in stopping oa nl w this scourge [T3.S247-S249] My administration is committed to fighting [Person.] the d an lu drug epidemic and helping get treatment for those in u nf va need, for those who have been so terribly hurt The struggle will be long and it will be difficult, but as ll oi m Americans always — in the end, we will succeed [T3.S250-S254] z at nh [Anta.] We will prevail [Anap.] As we have seen tonight, the most difficult [Epit.] z gm @ challenges bring out the best in America We see a vivid [Epit.] expression of this truth in the story of the Holets l m co family of New Mexico Ryan Holets is 27 years old, an officer with the Albuquerque Police Department He’s an Lu here tonight with his wife Rebecca Thank you, Ryan n va ac th si 120 [T3.S255-S257] Last year, Ryan was on duty when he saw a pregnant, homeless [Epit.] woman preparing to inject heroin When Ryan told her she was going to harm her unborn [Epit.] child, she began to weep She told him she didn’t know where to turn, but badly wanted a safe [Epit.] home for her baby [Anta.] [T3.S258-S266] In that moment, Ryan said he felt God speak to him [Person.]: “You will it, because you can.” He heard lu those words He took out a picture of his wife and their an four kids Then, he went home to tell his wife Rebecca In va n an instant, she agreed to adopt The Holets named their to gh tn new daughter Hope Ryan and Rebecca, you embody the p ie goodness of our nation Thank you Thank you, [Anap.] Ryan and Rebecca As we rebuild America’s strength and confidence at home oa nl w [T3.S267] [Meto.], we are also restoring our strength and standing d Around the world, we face rogue regimes, terrorist u nf va [T3.S268-S269] an lu abroad groups, and rivals [Enum.] like China and Russia that ll oi m challenge our interests, our economy, and our values z at nh [Enum.] In confronting these horrible [Epit.] dangers, we know that weakness is the surest [Epit.] path [Meta.] to z gm @ conflict, and unmatched [Epit.] power [Anti.] is the surest [Epit.] means to our true and great [Epit.] defense m co l [Paral.] an Lu n va ac th si 121 [T3.S270] For this reason, I am asking Congress to end the dangerous [Epit.] defense sequester and fully fund our great [Epit.] military [T3.S271] As part of our defense, we must modernize and rebuild our nuclear arsenal, hopefully never having to use it, but making it so strong and so powerful that it will deter any acts of aggression by any other nation or anyone else [T3.S272-S273] Perhaps someday in the future, there will be a magical lu [Epit.] moment when the countries of the world will get an together to eliminate their nuclear weapons va n Unfortunately, we are not there yet, sadly Last year, I also pledged that we would work with our gh tn to [T3.S274] p ie allies to extinguish ISIS from the face of the Earth [Meto.] One year later, I am proud to report that the coalition to oa nl w [T3.S275-S277] defeat ISIS has liberated very close to 100 percent of the d an lu territory just recently held by these killers in Iraq and in u nf va Syria and in other locations [Polys.], as well But there is much more work to be done We will continue our fight ll oi m until ISIS is defeated Army Staff Sergeant Justin Peck is here tonight Near z at nh [T3.S278-S79] Raqqa, last November, Justin and his comrade, Chief z gm @ Petty Officer Kenton Stacy, were on a mission to clear buildings that ISIS had rigged with explosive so that l hopefully safely m co civilians could return to that city hopefully soon, and an Lu n va ac th si 122 [T3.S280-S283] Clearing the second floor of a vital hospital, Kenton Stacy was severely wounded by an explosion Immediately, Justin bounded into the booby-trapped and unbelievably dangerous and unsafe [Epit.] + [Polys.] building, and found Kenton, but in very, very bad [Epit.] shape He applied pressure to the wound and inserted a tube to reopen an airway He then performed CPR for 20 straight minutes during the ground transport, and maintained lu artificial respiration through two and a half hours and an through emergency surgery va SKenton Stacy would have died if it were not for Justin’s n [T3.S284-288] to gh tn selfless love for his fellow warrior Tonight, Kenton is ie recovering in Texas Raqqa is liberated [Person.] And p Justin is wearing his new Bronze Star, with a “V” for oa nl w “valor.” Staff Sergeant Peck, all of America salutes you [T3.S289-S294] Terrorists who things like place bombs in civilian d an lu hospitals are evil When possible, we have no choice but u nf va to annihilate them When necessary, we must be able to detain and question them [Epis.] But we must be clear: ll oi m Terrorists are not merely criminals They are unlawful z at nh [Epit.] enemy combatants (Applause.) And when captured overseas, they should be treated like [Simi.] the gm @ [T3.S295] z terrorists they are In the past, we have foolishly released hundreds and l m co hundreds of [Hyper.] dangerous [Epit.] terrorists, only to meet them again on the battlefield — including the ISIS an Lu n va ac th si 123 leader, al-Baghdadi, who we captured, who we had, who we released [Anap.] + [Paral.] + [Parat.] So today, I’m keeping another promise I just signed, [T3.S296-299] prior to walking in, an order directing Secretary Mattis, who is doing a great [Epit.] job, thank you — (applause) — to reexamine our military detention policy and to keep open the detention facilities in Guantanamo Bay I am asking Congress to ensure that, in the fight against ISIS lu and al Qaeda, we continue to have all necessary power to an detain terrorists, wherever we chase them down, wherever va n we find them [Parat.] And in many cases, for them, it will to gh tn now be Guantanamo Bay [Epis.] At the same time, as of a few months ago, our warriors in p ie [T3.S300] Afghanistan have new [Epit.] rules of engagement Along with their heroic Afghan partners, our military is oa nl w [T3.S301] no longer undermined by artificial timelines, and we no d Last month, I also took an action endorsed unanimously u nf va [T3.S302-S303] an lu longer tell our enemies our plans by the US Senate just months before I recognized ll oi m Jerusalem as the capital of Israel Shortly afterwards, dozens of countries voted in the z at nh [T3.S304-S305] United Nations General Assembly against America’s z gm @ sovereign right to make this decision In 2016, American taxpayers generously sent those same countries more than m co [T3.S306-S307] l $20 billion in aid That is why, tonight, I am asking Congress to pass an Lu legislation to help ensure American foreign-assistance n va ac th si 124 dollars always serve American interests, and only go to friends of America, not enemies [Anti.] of America As we strengthen friendships all around the world, we are also restoring clarity about our adversaries [T3.S308-S309] When the people of Iran rose up against the crimes of their corrupt dictatorship, I did not stay silent America stands [Person.] with the people of Iran in their courageous [Epit.] struggle for freedom lu [T3.S310] I am asking Congress to address the fundamental flaws in an the terrible [Epit.] Iran nuclear deal va n [T3.S311-S314] My administration has also imposed tough sanctions on to gh tn the communist and socialist dictatorships in Cuba and p ie Venezuela But no regime has oppressed its own citizens more totally or brutally than the cruel dictatorship in oa nl w North Korea North Korea’s reckless [Epit.] pursuit of nuclear missiles could very soon threaten our homeland d an lu We are waging a campaign of maximum pressure to [T3.S315-S316] u nf va prevent that from ever happening Past experience has taught us that complacency and ll oi m concessions only invite aggression and provocation I will z at nh not repeat the mistakes of past administrations that got us into this very dangerous [Epit.] position z We need only look at the depraved character of the North gm @ [T3.S317] Korean regime to understand the nature of the nuclear l [T3.S318-S322] m co threat it could pose to America and to our allies Otto Warmbier was a hardworking [Epit.] student at the an Lu University of Virginia — and a great [Epit.] student he n va ac th si 125 was On his way to study abroad in Asia, Otto joined a tour to North Korea At its conclusion, this wonderful young [Epit.] man was arrested and charged with crimes against the state After a shameful [Epit.] trial, the dictatorship sentenced Otto to 15 years of hard labor, before returning him to America last June, horribly injured and on the verge of death [Meta.] He passed away just days after his return Otto’s wonderful [Epit.] parents, Fred and Cindy lu [T3.S323-327] an Warmbier, are here with us tonight, along with Otto’s va n brother and sister, Austin and Greta Incredible [Epit.] to gh tn people You are powerful [Epit.] witnesses to a menace p ie that threatens our world, and your strength truly inspires us all [Person.] Thank you very much Thank you nl w [Anap.] oa Tonight, we pledge to honor Otto’s memory with total [T3.S328-S331] d an lu American resolve Thank you Finally, we are joined by u nf va one more witness to the ominous [Epit.] nature of this regime His name is Mr Ji Seong-ho ll In 1996, Seong-ho was a starving boy in North Korea oi m [T3.S332-S337] z at nh One day, he tried to steal coal from a railroad car to barter for a few scraps of food, which were very hard to get In z gm @ the process, he passed out on the train tracks, exhausted from hunger He woke up as a train ran over his limbs He l m co then endured multiple amputations without anything to dull the pain or the hurt His brother and sister gave what an Lu little food they had to help him recover and ate dirt n va ac th si 126 themselves, permanently stunting their own growth [Hyper.] [T3.S338-S340] Later, he was tortured by North Korean authorities after returning from a brief visit to China His tormentors wanted to know if he’d met any Christians He had, and he resolved, after that, to be free [T3.S341-S343] Seong-ho traveled thousands of miles on crutches all across China and Southeast Asia to freedom Most of his lu family followed His father was caught trying to escape an and was tortured to death va n [T3.S344-S348] Today he lives in Seoul, where he rescues other defectors, to gh tn and broadcasts into North Korea what the regime fears p ie most: the truth Today, he has a new [Epit.] leg But, Seong-ho, I understand you still keep those old [Epit.] nl w crutches as [Simi.] a reminder [Person.] of how far d oa you’ve come Your great [Epit.] sacrifice is an an lu inspiration [Person.] to us all Seong-ho’s story is a u nf va testament to the yearning of every human soul to live in freedom ll It was that same yearning for freedom that nearly 250 oi m [T3.S349-S351] z at nh years ago gave birth to a special [Epit.] place called America It was a small [Epit.] cluster of colonies caught z gm @ between a great [Epit.] ocean and a vast [Epit.] wilderness It was [Anap.] home to an incredible [Epit.] l m co people with a revolutionary [Epit.] idea: that they could rule themselves; that they could chart their own destiny; an Lu n va ac th si 127 and that, together, they could light up the entire world [Enum.] + [Paral.] [T3.S352-S353] That is what our country has always been about That is what [Anap.] Americans have always stood for, always strived for, and always done [Paral.] [T3.S354-S357] Atop the dome of this Capitol stands the Statue of Freedom She stands tall and dignified among the monuments to our ancestors who fought, and lived, and lu died to protect her [Polys.] Monuments [Cond.] to an Washington, and Jefferson, and Lincoln, and King va n [Polys.] Memorials to the heroes of Yorktown and to gh tn Saratoga; to young Americans who shed their blood p ie [Meta.] on the shores of Normandy and the fields beyond; and others, who went down in the waters of the Pacific oa nl w and the skies all over Asia [Hyper.] [T3.S358-359] And freedom stands tall over one more monument: this d an lu one This Capitol — this living monument [Person.] — [T3.S360] u nf va this [Anap.] is the moment to the American people We’re a people whose heroes live not only in the past, but ll oi m all around us, defending hope, pride, and defending the [T3.S361-366] z at nh American way [Anta.] They work in every trade They sacrifice to raise a family z gm @ They care for our children at home They defend our flag [Meto.] abroad And they are strong [Epit.] moms and l m co brave [Epit.] kids They [Anap.] are firefighters, and police officers, and border agents, medics, and Marines an Lu [Polys.] n va ac th si 128 [T3.S367-368] But above all else, they are Americans And this Capitol, this city, this nation [Anap.], belongs entirely to them [T3.S369] Our task is to respect them, to listen to them, to serve them, to protect them, and to always be worthy of them
