Management I Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Introdution: One of the main ports in Ho Chi Minh City, Cat Lai port sits on the Dong Nai River and is managed by the Ministry of National Defense's Saigon Newport Corporation (Vietnam) The port, which is situated in Thu Duc city, is ranked in the Top 25 of the world's top ports in terms of market share for import and export containers It is a member of the group of seaports numbered and is currently the largest and most advanced international container port in Vietnam representing almost 50% of the country's market share and over 90% of the southern area Enterprises choose the port because the location is one of the important factors because of the short travel time, saving costs, time and human resources Tan Cang-Cat Lai is a specialized port that offers seaport and logistics services in addition to handling containers This port has a total area of up to 60 hectares, more than 450,000 m2 of container yards, and warehouses that can hold hundreds of tons of cargo Additionally, there are 30 different types of Panamax shore cranes and 2,040m berths There are five container gates at Cat Lai Port, each featuring 31 entering lanes and 18 exit lanes for more convenient vehicle coordination Additionally, the TOP-X system of TOPOVN & RBS (Australia) is used at Cat Ly Port for container management and operation This system is paired with a synchronized hardware system to support real-time container management Since then, import and export times have been sped up, and port operation capacity has been optimized Additionally, Cat Lai Port is the first port to be given state approval to construct open port areas with a variety of services and excellent consumer conditions II Departments/ Locations in Cat Lai port and its functions Wharf The pier at Cat Lai Port is more than 216 meters long and has eight piers As a specialized container dock system, this location has an ideal depth with a high water level of over 12m to assist ships in moving and docking safely; it can receive container ships with a tonnage of 30000-40,000 DWT, equivalent to a carrying capacity of 2500 Cat Lai Port Page Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan TEUs; it only receives feeder ships moored with an average capacity of 81 anchorage vessels per week, necessitating a large number of workers to work nonstop; and it requires a Ships must dock safely using contemporary technology such as a berth to unload the ship's contents This location's primary job is to serve as a refueling and container transportation port for ships, which is significant because it has an export and import function Cat Lai Wharf Manual inspection area This place is considered an extremely important place to ensure the safety of goods as required by the customs department Currently, corporations must inspect commodities to ensure that they are complete in terms of documentation and legal procedures, as well as that there are no instances of contraband in the goods And these goods will be inspected using two methods: scanners and manual inspection Cat Lai Port Page Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Scanner: to ensure that nothing goes missing, we will perform the recording procedures, and then hand it over to customs test source and they will conduct an analysis of how the scanner enables decision-making for goods clearance Manual inspection: A manual inspector will be in charge of this inspection; goods will be collected here and separated into three streams: green, yellow, and red The green channel primarily examines goods for customs clearance, while the yellow channel examines goods documents and the red channel examines both documents and actual goods Manual inspection area Cat Lai Port Page Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Warehouse Warehouses are an essential part of any port, built for the purpose of storing and storing goods There are four types of warehouses in Cat Lai port, numbered 1, 2, 3, and Warehouse will house and store mixed goods Warehouses and are where the odd goods are removed from the packed containers and stored until the importer arrives to pick them up Warehouse is where odd goods are stored and for export, odd goods are collected in a warehouse, also known as CFS in the port, to wait for all those odd goods to be packed into one container and exported password go Goods will be classified and appropriately arranged on shelves of approximately floors in these warehouses for easy retrieval The main functions of these warehouses will be to consolidate goods, coordinate goods, and preserve and store goods Consolidating goods: This function saves space and optimizes warehouse size by combining a variety of products into large shipments Goods coordination: Typically, warehouses will hold many different types of goods; however, this function will coordinate and separate large shipments and focus many different types of goods into a single complete order Goods preservation and storage: Ensure that the goods are complete in terms of quantity Preserving and storing goods: Ensure that goods remain intact in terms of quantity and quality throughout the operation process; maximize warehouse area and capacity; Take care of the inventory Cat Lai Port Page Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Warehouse Office buildings Building A: residences the customer service department, which answers questions from stakeholders such as customers, container owners, and port staff, as well as representative offices for a number of other shipping lines Building B: This is where customs procedures for handling are completed, as well as where the procedures for bringing goods on board are registered Building C: This is the company's headquarters, and it houses many departments such as marketing, finance, auditing, and other related departments to manage and operate the new port Cat Lai Port Page Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Office buildings III Types of equipment related to logistics activities in Cat Lai Ship to Shore − STS In today's ports, STS cranes is an abbreviated form of Ship To Shore There are the following types: • Container gantry crane is a large crane located at the wharf, usually installed at specialized container ports to load and unload containers by lifting over the ship's railing: Lift-on/Lift-off (Lo/Lo) This crane has a sturdy frame structure, placed perpendicular to the pier, reaching across the hull during cargo handling The gantry crane mounts an automatic palletizing rack called a "spreader", which moves up and down and snaps onto the upper four corners of the container through a mechanism called a "twistlock" • Multi-function crane is a type of crane used to lift general cargo, and can be used to crane containers when needed The advantage of this type of crane is that it can be turned easily, and is flexible in choosing the position of lifting and placing the container without moving This type is not specialized and has less productivity Cat Lai Port Page Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan than gantry cranes Some ports such as Le Thanh Tong, Doan Xa (Hai Phong), Tan Thuan (Saigon) still use this type of crane At Cat Lai port, this crane is not used • Container stacking crane is a mobile crane used to arrange containers in the port's container yard (Container Yard - CY) This type of crane has a structure consisting of a frame with a base attached to a roller on a rail or a rubber roller and a trolley that moves along the girder frame Cat Lai port center has many types of these mobile cranes STS cranes are ideal for transporting containers containing imported or exported goods This is one of the most significant pieces of equipment used to load and unload containers at the harbour The items can be loaded onto the ship or emptied from the ship to the yard swiftly and conveniently, making them ideal for feeder ships STS satisfies the requirements for high handling capacity, dependability, and safety, as well as extreme efficiency Not only is it appropriate for feeder vessels, but it is also appropriate for huge or super large vessels The STS is powered by electricity and has a backup power system, so in the event of a power outage, the STS will power itself For increased protection in the event of a power outage This design is commonly encountered in building elevators or apartments with backup power sources in the event of a power outage Cat Lai Port Page Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Container gantry crane_Cat Lai port STS cranes can be seen in Tan Cang at Cau Tau Wharf, with the Dong Nai River in front It's a towering blue item with a unique shade of blue that comes in other colors that stand out just as well There are about 30 STS cranes, which are simple to transport because they are mounted on a rail with wheels At the barge berth, there are soon STS cranes Many people believe that without this crane, Cat Lai port would not exist as it is now This crane is currently underperforming, falling far behind the newer STS cranes There is a cabin section on the tower crane Because of the nature of the profession, this chamber is normally controlled by male employees The crane's axes can be moved via controls in the cab Transparent glass surrounds the cabin Even the lower section of the cabin is transparent, including the bottoms of the staff's feet while they sit in the cabin The bottom is translucent to allow for container folding Because of the crane's hazardous nature, persons working in this cabin must be able to resist heights, be in good health, withstand pressure and stress, be thorough, and pay attention to detail in order to assure the ship's and those working on the mainland's Cat Lai Port Page 10 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan safety People who work in the STS cabin tend to age more quickly than those in other positions Shore cranes will also be operated in shifts, with each shift lasting eight hours Shore cranes are available all year, 24 hours a day Ship to Shore achieves good performance as a result of its frequent operation STS is also equipped with an LED system and OCR (technology equipment used to recognize characters such as reading container numbers) As a result, the port's lighting capacity will be increased while also saving electricity and expenditures Forklift A forklift is a small industrial device with an attached fork that can be raised and lowered in front of the vehicle by adding a lifting frame to change the height Forklifts serve the extremely diverse needs of manufacturing, industrial, logistics, warehouses and large goods storage The birth of forklift is considered a turning point of modern industry Today, forklifts are widely used and popular in most manufacturing and exporting enterprises Forklifts of Tan Cang Logistics Cat Lai Port Page 11 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Forklifts include many different types and criteria of use and different degrees of construction and manufacturing technology, among them there are very simple structures that are hand pallet trucks that are used in many places from the village occupations, households to industrial zones But fuel is typically used to distinguish them in Cat Lai There are two sorts of forklift trucks that we frequently see: oilpowered cars and electric vehicles Each automobile serves a distinct purpose Take, for example, the electric cars that are routinely used in warehouses A warehouse is a facility where items are stored to keep them safe from dust and the elements Because all of these things have the potential to harm the goods, the warehouse is normally intended to be as secure as possible To reduce air pollution in the warehouse, the forklift is powered by electricity Outside the warehouse, you'll frequently see Forklifts running on oil This is just a small section of the equipment that supports Logistic Each piece of equipment at the Cai Lai port contributes to logistics activities by generating more energy, enhancing efficiency, and ensuring continuous improvement Due to technological advancements, costs will be reduced Forklifts are used very often in warehouses, playing the main role to lift goods from transport vehicles or from production lines to storage yards Forklift trucks have many sizes, from small enough to be used in warehouses to 50 ton forklifts used to lift containers on docks and seaports Forklift operators can lift cargo and use the Side Shifter to move and tilt the frame so that the cargo doesn't slide off the fork Conveyor belt at the rice packing station Conveyor rice is a product line that is designed to be simple and easy to operate to help transport products over long distances quickly and conveniently Fung rice conveyor into production helps promote fast work, reduce labor, and save investment costs Because alluvium is constantly accumulating in the Mekong Delta, the water will eventually run out It leads to a narrow and shallow existence, and large ships find it difficult to navigate The Mekong Delta and Cat Lai port play a key role in connecting Cat Lai Port Page 12 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan and trade with Cat Lai Because there are nearly no empty containers in the Mekong Delta, Cat Lai Port provides empty container services for enterprises to load rice The rice bags are transported from the barge to the container using this conveyor belt An employee will place the card on the rice bag at the start of the conveyor belt, and another employee will collect the card to count the cards It displays the quantity of bags of rice based on the card number The personnel will place the rice bags into the container at the end of the conveyor belt Conveyor belt at the rice packing station_Cat Lai Port The conveyor belt may be easily lifted and lowered to make moving, loading, and unloading rice products into the container, as well as counting the number of bags of rice with a card and testing the quality of rice with a skewer and inserting it, more easier When the bag of rice is on the conveyor belt, it can be sampled This decreases the load of handling for humans, lowering labor costs in the process, Help increase accuracy, save time, take initiative for transportation Despite the fact that Cat Lai port only has one rice conveyor belt, it has made a significant contribution to the process products between countries and feed people Cat Lai Port Page 13 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan IV Types of containers Plat rack container Designed with no walls, no roof but only the floor is a solid ground, specialized for transporting heavy goods such as machinery and equipment, iron and steel Ground containers have a type with two-headed walls (front and back), this wall can be fixed, folded down, or disassembled Plat rack container Thermal container Used to convey temperature-sensitive goods like food, medicines, biological products, organs, blood, vaccinations, and chemicals Insulation is typically covered by yoke and this kind Because the floor is comprised of structural aluminum, information cannot pass through it or into any of its voids The outer container is always white to avoid absorbing heat from the outside Cat Lai Port Page 14 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Thermal container General purpose container Used to carry dry goods, it is also known as dry container, abbreviated as 20'DC or 40'DC, 40HC This type of container is most used in shipping General purpose container Bulk container It is the type of container that allows dry bulk queues (cement, cereals, ore ) by pouring from the top down through the mouth of the queue, and unloading the goods at the bottom or next door Normal bulk cargo containers have an external shape that Cat Lai Port Page 15 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan closely resembles department stores, except for the loading mouth and the unloading shop Bulk container Opentop container Open-roof containers are conveniently designed for loading and unloading goods through the container roof After packing, the roof will be covered with oil cloth This type of container is used to transport machinery and equipment or wood with a long body Opentop container Cat Lai Port Page 16 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Named cargo containers Specially designed to carry a certain type of goods such as cars, live animals, etc Car-carrying container: The structure consists of a frame linked to the floor, no need for walls with a roof, used to transport cars, and can be stacked inside or floors depending on the height of the vehicle This is currently the most used Animal Containers: specially designed to carry livestock Vertical wall or front wall is fitted with small mesh doors for ventilation The lower part of the vertical wall arranges a dirty outlet when cleaning Named cargo containers Tank container Including an ISO standard frame in which a container is attached, used to transport liquid goods such as alcohol, chemicals, food The goods are poured in through the mouth of the tank above the container roof, and drawn through the exhaust valve by the effect of gravity or drawn through the mouth of the tank by pump Cat Lai Port Page 17 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Tank container Sate the information distinguish the diffence between those types of containers Sort containers by size: Depending on the purpose of use, it is also classified as a container according to ISO standards, the container has main sizes: 20 feet, 40 feet and 45 feet In each size, there are classifications as follows: dry container, high container (HC - High Cube), cold container (RF - Reefer), high cold container (HR Hi-Cube Reefer), open top (OT - open container), flatrack container Container Type Length (m) Width (m) Height (m) Volume (m3) Container 20 feet 5.898 2.352 2.395 33.2 m3 Container 20 feet cold 5.485 2.286 2.265 28.4 m3 Container 40 feet usually 12.032 2.350 2.392 67.6 m3 Container 40 feet high 12.023 2.352 2.698 76.3 m3 Container 40 feet cold 11.572 2.296 2.521 67.0 m3 Standard container size table − Packaging size of container: o 20-foot container :d.060 m;2,440 m wide;2,590 m high o 40-foot container :d 12,190 m; width 2,440 m;2,590 m high o 45-foot container: 13,716 m long, 2,500 m wide, 2,896 m high Cat Lai Port Page 18 Logistics Management - Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan There are some operators, depending on their needs to serve the purpose of transporting their goods, they will design other containers V Types of ship that Cat Lai port approves to berth The types of ships that Cat Lai port approves to berth are feeder ships and barges Feeder ships Feeder vessels or feeder ships are medium-size freight ships In general, a feeder designates a seagoing vessel with an average capacity of 300 to 1000 twenty – foot equivalent units (TEUS) Feeder ship Barge A barge is a flat-bottomed boat built mainly for river and canal transport of bulk goods Currently, there are two types of barges are: • Conventional barges: these can’t move their own, they must be towed or pushed by a tug This type is used especially for transporting construction materials as well as difficult to move machinery and equipment Cat Lai Port Page 19 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan Conventional barges • Self – propelled barges: these can move on their own without a tugboat This type is used to transport of goods to ports by inland waterway means where goods are loaded on the container Howerver, the form of this transportation still has some disadvantages: transport fewer goods than other forms of transportation, and carrying capacity usually depends on the types of cargo (e.g rice products, clothes products) Self – propelled barges Cat Lai Port Page 20 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan The reasons that Cat Lai port just receives those types of ships are presented below: - Cat Lai port is located on Dong Nai River and has a depth of 12.5 meters in front of the wharf In addition, the depth of the Dong Nai River has a depth of 8.5 meters right in the middle of the river, tie level is not included that’s why it affects the ships According to how deep the water that Cat Lai port just receives small ships and the large ships aren’t safe enough to be able to berth in Cat Lai - Feeder ships with a tonnage of 5.000 DWT and barges with tonnage about 1.000 to 000 DWT, so Cat Lai port receives these types of ships to berth Because Cat Lai port only receives ships less than 45.000 DWT, specializing in intra – Asian transport, for goods exported and imported to the European and American markets by large – tonnage vessels which must transport goods to Cai Mep port - Feeder ships can only travel inland on the continent such as Vietnam – Singapore, Vietnam – Philippines, etc and large ships take routes from Vietnam to European through the feeder ship for transshipment and supply to the mother ship to carry cargo to the destination port in a long way - Large ships are unable to berth in Cat Lai port but the largest ship in Cat Lai port receives about 2900 TEUS equivalent to about 45.000 DWT And 90 percent of the total unloading containers in Cai Mep port are transported to Cat Lai port by barge - In addition, barges are used to transport common commodities are agricultural products, raw material, etc from the western provinces of Mekong Delta reigon to Cat Lai port due to these items aren’t usually directly containerized at the place of production and will be containerized after being brought to Cat Lai port VI Conclusion: After the field trip at Cat Lai port, we gained a lot of knowledge about warehouses, advanced equipment to support operations at the port, and learned more about different types of containers and shipping vessels Cat Lai Port with a large area, modern equipment and offices for approving import and export goods helps us to control the amount of imported and exported goods, check which goods are good and Cat Lai Port Page 21 Logistics Management Lecturer: M.A Nguyen Le Dong Xuan prevent them goods prohibited from being imported illegally through customs This trip was really interesting and rewarding VII References • How many types of
