SUMMARY OF NEW CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE DOCTORAL THESIS Disertation title: Development of Microfinance Institutions in Vietnam Full name of Ph.D student: Nguyen Manh Hung Scientific instructors: Assoc Prof., Dr Ha Quang Dao Dr Nguyen The Binh Major: Finance - Banking Code: 9.34.02.01 Training institution: Ho Chi Minh City Banking University The research general objective of the thesis has been the common goal of proposing appropriate solutions and policy implications for the development of MFIs in Vietnam in the future In order to achieve this research goal, the thesis has collected a sample of 27 MFIs in the period from 2008 to 2019 in Vietnam It has included official MFIs and 23 semi oficial MFIs The thesis has used a combination of appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods The quantitative research methods have used which included panel data regression models such as Pool OLS, FEM, REM, GLS, SGMM Thereby, the results of the thesis have achieved some new points as the following contributions: In theory and academia The thesis has systematized the basic theories of MFIs opertation and MFI development Accordingly, the thesis has used institutional theory to assess the development of microfinance institutions which has based on two main aspects which have been accessibility and sustainability In addition, the thesis has contributed to comprehensively supplementing empirical evidence on factors which affected on the sustainability of MFIs in Vietnam The thesis has used many different estimation methods with panel data so that the research results of the thesis ensure the reliability of the conclusions In Vietnam, there also were some researches which analyzed the factors which affected not only on the sustainability of MFIs such as Nguyen Quynh Phuong (2017); Thu Trang Bui (2017); Ha Thi Thieu Dao et al (2018) but also on the level of access such as Le Thanh Tam (2008); Pham Bich Lien (2016) However, the research results had many differences Moreover, the thesis used moderating variables to determine the differences in not only influencing factors but also the level of impact of factors on the sustainability between formal and semi-formal MFIs That is a new point of the thesis which can fill the research gap Actually, there have been no studies on this content yet in a developing country like Vietnam In practice: The research results have helped policy makers who have been more awareness of the development situation as well as the factors affecting sustainability in order to improve the efficiency of MFIs in Vietnam so that they could develop commensurate with their potential Moreover, they have been more important role of the national strategy about financial inclusion in Vietnam in the future Specifically, author who have based on research results on influencing factors, have proposed solutions which may imply for formal MFIs and semi-formal MFIs in Vietnam Ho Chi Minh City, June 30th, 2022 Ph.D student Nguyen Manh Hung
