applications Combining technology and English learning may be a viable option for motivating the next generation to study English language The objectives of this research were to investigate the attitudes and difficulties of using Quizlet, a quickly developing technology that has both a web and mobile phone edition, to measure how far is the application's effectiveness in improving vocabulary self-studying among English majored students The subjects of this research were English majored students from Faculty Foreign Languages (FFL) at Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City (IUH) This thesis investigated one hundred and thirty FFL students, ranging from first-year to fourth-year students, using quantitative analysis techniques Questionnaires were used to gather quantitative data The result of the research showed that the students had positive perceptions of studying vocabulary through Quizlet Notably, the majority of students agreed with the positive benefits of learning through Quizlet that are easier to memorize vocabulary and more motivated in learning vocabulary However, besides the benefits, the results of research also found some difficulties of students when using Quizlet application to learn vocabulary The common difficulties of students obtained from the survey such as not being able to access Quizlet without internet, students feeling lazy when learning vocabulary by themselves and Quizlet is not popular among students Based on the obtained results, the researcher gave some suggestions to improve the difficulties encountered by students and to help them in using the Quizlet application more effectively The researcher sincerely hopes that this thesis will support English majored students to use Quizlet application to enhance vocabulary selfstudying effectively Furthermore, the researcher also hopes that this study maybe help lecturers at IUH to know Quizlet more so that they can recommend to their students to promote motivation in Chart 4.7: The benefit of using Quizlet have a positive effect on self-studying vocabulary It can be seen in the pie chart that the majority of students participating in the survey voted yes, with Quizlet bringing positive benefits in self-study vocabulary Up to 87% of students agree to agree strongly, 11.5% feel normal, and very few percent disagree The students participating in the survey have used Quizlet at least a few times or through teachers, and all agree that Quizlet is a tool to help learners take the initiative or review the vocabulary they have learned in class 4.1.2 when creating own works Factor 8: Do not keep hard at using Quizlet Factor 9: Do not understand learning modes Factor 10: Other …… The bar chart gives us information that some difficulties student's FFL have face when using Quizlet From the data that the survey brings, we can see that students often encounter two main problems when using this application: need to have the Internet to use and feel lazy when learning vocabulary by oneself Sixty-three students, equivalent to 48.5%, voted for no Quizlet to use Internet-connected devices This is one of the significant disadvantages of Quizlet when users can study anytime, anywhere, but with Internet conditions The second disadvantage that many students vote for is that they are pretty lazy to learn vocabulary when studying alone This application is designed with personalization in mind This means that users can only interact with others through pre-designed lessons Many learners feel that working or studying with others enhances and enhances their learning However, students can still interact with friends through the teacher's classes Quizlet offers ratings and scoring when it comes to organizing classes through a variety of learning modes Besides, there are still many shortcomings that Quizlet still has that the researcher has made 13.8% voted for them not know how to use Quizlet and how effectively, 31.5% of students said that this application is not popular in their learning process, 22.3 % say they feel bored using this app, 31.5% say that some other user's flashcards are often inaccurate, 20% of students think lessons they create are widely shared for other users, 19.2% of students said that Quizlet did not help them hard in learning vocabulary, 8.5% did not understand the structure of learning modes In the end, 6.4% voted other User experiences will be synthesized and changed further by Quizlet to improve quality The researcher's data cannot cover all of Quizlet, but these are the most prominent shortcomings of this application Supervisor: Ho Thi Hien, M.A Page 23 Student’s full name: Duong Tan Nhat Student ID Number: 17078651 Chart 4.9: The suggestions for improving these difficulties above Factor 1: Find out information about Quizlet before using Factor 2: The learner should have a specific learning path (topic, time for each lesson…) Factor 3: The learner should have more awareness of the importance of learning vocabulary Factor 4: Encourage teachers to use Quizlet in classroom Factor 5: Encourage teachers to instruct students how to use Quizlet Factor 6: Encourage students to use Quizlet at home or whenever they have free time Factor 7: Introduce Quizlet to teachers, students, friends… Factor 8: Maintain the use of Quizlet for a long time Factor 9: Other …… It can be seen from the bar chart that suggests the highest student being chosen the most is the learner should have a specific learning path (topic, time for each lesson…) with 62 people, equivalent to 47.7% Ranked second among the Suggestions that students vote for encourages teachers to use Quizlet in the classroom with 45.4%, corresponding to 59 people Ranked 3rd in the top suggested by most students is to encourage students to use Quizlet at home or whenever they have free time, with 43.1% corresponding to 56 people These suggestions are based on student experiences using Quizlet in an attempt to improve the application The remaining suggestions include 33.8% of votes for find out information about Quizlet before using, 31.5% for the learner should have more awareness of the importance of learning vocabulary, 32.3% for encouraging teachers to instruct students how to use Quizlet, 29.2% for introducing Quizlet to teachers, students, friends, 20.8% for maintaining the use of Quizlet for a long time and finally 3.1% for other suggestions Not too surprising when students need more lessons using Quizlet to get acquainted and learn more about this application's working mechanism Not only that, students need to learn more at home to serve their learning purposes actively For vocabulary lessons or Supervisor: Ho Thi Hien, M.A Page 24 Student’s full name: Duong Tan Nhat Student ID Number: 17078651 subjects that require vocabulary learning, teachers should use this application to increase students' learning efficiency and more lively in the classroom 4.2 Discussion After conducting data collection and analysis, the researcher obtained very satisfactory and satisfactory results to support the goal set by the research team The survey questions were all censored by the instructor and approved to bring reliability and accuracy after conducting the survey The survey subjects were thoughtfully implemented under the supervision of researchers as well as teaching teachers The answers are all objective; there is no sign of information exchange during implementation Not only that, but the researcher also selected the survey subjects, namely the 3rd and 4th-year students, because their knowledge of Quizlet was relatively solid than the first and second-year students This selection is intended to bring higher accuracy to this study This result has solved the two problems that the researcher has proposed: studying the attitude of English language majors students towards using Quizlet and the difficulties they encounter in the process of using it and solutions The first is about the attitude of students when using the Quizlet application Based on the survey results, most students feel excited by the variety of learning modes integrated into this application These exciting functions contribute to increasing students' interest in self-studying vocabulary at home instead of having to suffer from the usual traditional way of learning It can be said that self-study is essential for university students because most teachers cannot control the entire learning process at home Most students feel lazy because self-study is boring, making them no longer interested in learning However, Quizlet has solved this problem by creating exciting learning modes that students can customize to their preferences, giving them the freedom to be creative in their learning Many students have also been more active in learning, no longer passively waiting for teachers to remind or assign work home Second, this study also points out the difficulties students face in using this application The most prominent of these problems is that students get bored when they have to study alone Quizlet is a personal application for home learning and review activities This application also does not support communication or information exchange but must be communicated through other applications Although there are learning modes to make users feel more exciting, the interaction is still minimal After experiencing all those modes at a certain point in time, students will get bored when they have to the same learning repeatedly without interaction from other users However, through the results of this study, the researcher has come up with some solutions to overcome the above situation through another function of Quizlet that users can forget, which is "search." This function allows users to type keywords they need to learn or review; the application will return learning modes that other users have created, including those keywords This contributes to more diversity in the use and learning of students because most of them can change many topics and other modes Not only that, but Quizlet also has the function to invite other users to join the class that students have created to participate in fun activities with many people at the same time Not only does it increase competition, but it also helps them interact more, no longer feeling bored because they have to study alone As for the results and the research process of author Sanosi (2018) on "The effect of Quizlet on Vocabulary Acquisition," as the researcher mentioned before, our topic also refers to the acquisition of vocabulary via Quizlet However, in the research process by author Sanosi, there are still some similarities with our research topic The first difference is the object of study In Supervisor: Ho Thi Hien, M.A Page 25 Student’s full name: Duong Tan Nhat Student ID Number: 17078651 comparison, the author research with a particular group of students to efficiently conduct surveys and experiments The second difference is the way the research is conducted Author Sanosi has experimented for a certain period to obtain more accurate results The author will compare those results to draw the difference between using Quizlet and not using Quizlet Finally, the most easily noticeable difference between the two research papers is the content As can be seen from the project title, the author's research mainly focuses on students' vocabulary acquisition when using Quizlet Meanwhile, our research only focuses on students using Quizlet to be able to self-study vocabulary at home For the research article of author Barr (2016) on “Checking the effectiveness of Quizlet as a tool for vocabulary learning”, it can be easily seen that it is not too different from author Sanosi (2018) research Both authors use a method of collection and experimentation to enhance the effectiveness of Quizlet when used in the classroom to teach and learn vocabulary The difference between our study and the two studies mentioned above mainly comes from the approach to the topic Our team has discovered potentials that previous researchers may have overlooked, thereby exploiting them to add new aspects when exploiting the Quizlet application Our research focuses on students' selfstudy, and the Quizlet tool is the app to support that Many researchers have forgotten that exploiting the features instead of focusing more on the effectiveness of Quizlet Maybe for each time, self-study is not so important to use other tools to support, but for some subjects, especially foreign languages, self-study is the minimum that students can to improve their skills More specifically, it is the amount of vocabulary that a language major student must achieve to achieve the target set by the learning environment Realizing the potential of Quizlet application in selfstudying vocabulary at home, we have researched based on introducing students in the same field to a tool to support learning, and at the same time, solving solve the problems that students face in the process of self-studying vocabulary Supervisor: Ho Thi Hien, M.A Page 26 Student’s full name: Duong Tan Nhat Student ID Number: 17078651 CHAPTER V CONCLUSION Supervisor: Ho Thi Hien, M.A Page 27 Student’s full name: Duong Tan Nhat Student ID Number: 17078651 5.1 Conclusion This study focuses on finding out the impact of Quizlet in enhancing vocabulary self-learning of English majored students In addition, this study investigates the attitude of FFL students towards Quizlet application and finds out the difficulties that students face when using Quizlet for their self-study In this study, the researcher used a quantitative research method, and the instrument of this research is the questionnaire to collect information From the results and discussion in the previous chapter, several results are drawn in this chapter First of all, the main findings of this study show that Quizlet is a practical application that can assist students in self-studying vocabulary outside the classroom Students also showed a positive attitude towards self-study through the Quizlet application Students also gave their views on the benefits of Quizlet application through questionnaires It seems that economic issues are always a concern of most students because college is a time when students cannot earn much money Therefore, Quizlet can satisfy this student's demand because it is a free application In addition, Quizlet makes it easy for learners to memorize vocabulary; it has a variety of learning modes and vivid interfaces, which are also benefits that many learners have realized from the Quizlet application From the results obtained through the survey, this study points out the difficulties that students may face when utilizing Quizlet The researcher gave some suggestions to assist them in using this application proficiently to self-study vocabulary from those challenges Unstable internet connections, a lack of understanding when utilizing Quizlet, and feeling bored when studying by themselves are all common issues students often face when using this application Furthermore, students are frequently uninterested in studying the language independently, so they devote less effort to it; they not spend much time on self-studying vocabulary in a day Students must be more proactive in their studies to achieve high outcomes in college, which is often accomplished by expanding vocabulary every day Students must be aware of the importance of vocabulary in learning English and the meaning of self-study to achieve success in learning English If students become bored when dealing with a growing amount of words, they must learn more about new learning strategies or new methods to rekindle their enthusiasm for learning 5.2 Limitations After completing all the processes of a study, researchers have completed their graduate thesis However, this cheat has some notable limitations due to time constraints and lack of experience First, the number of participants is not large enough to better understand the problem studied Although the department of foreign languages currently has more than 2,000 students majoring in English, the researchers only surveyed 130 students As a result, recommendations may be subjective and inappropriate Second, for data collection, the researchers said that all the difficulties and suggestions when using Quizlet for self-study of English language students had not been collected When given the questionnaire, the participants seemed to be limited in their answers by answering multiple-choice questions They may not be able to find an answer that fits their actual situation Therefore, the results may not be very reliable Third, this study finds out the advantages and disadvantages and proposes to solve them to encourage the use of Quizlet in self-study vocabulary However, the researchers did not prove students' results before and after using Quizlet to self-study vocabulary Therefore, the level of convincing users is not high Supervisor: Ho Thi Hien, M.A Page 28 Student’s full name: Duong Tan Nhat Student ID Number: 17078651 5.3 Recommendation For students majoring in languages, vocabulary is an essential element and takes much time to cultivate To optimize study time, students should focus on self-study more In that process, learners often face specific difficulties such as boredom because of too much vocabulary or no interest in learning To improve the above problems, learners should use the Quizlet application to self-study their vocabulary This application not only helps students improve their memorization but also increases their interest through interesting learning modes Before using this application, students should learn its functions and modes through search engines, or students can also experience and draw their usage Quizlet is still a new application for many students in the university environment, especially freshmen and sophomores Therefore, for students to quickly access this application, teachers should use it in each of their lessons Not only does it help them manage the class, but it also increases interest and creates a happy atmosphere for students Outside of classroom hours, teachers should also encourage students to use this app outside of class during their self-study and vocabulary review Giving students early exposure to this app will help them find new learning methods that are more effective than traditional learning methods In the process of conducting research, the research team will inevitably make inevitable mistakes However, we have also drawn experiences so that later researchers can apply and avoid the mistakes that previous researchers have made When conducting the survey, realizing the research team's difficulties before the paper survey, the team created a QR code When the survey subject scans this code, it will lead to a link associated with the survey questions generated on the Google Document Thanks to this tool, survey data is processed quickly and produces the most accurate graphs This helps researchers save costs as well as data processing In addition, the research team's topic has not yet been able to conduct an experiment on the effectiveness of Quizlet when selflearning vocabulary but can only survey The following research groups should delve deeper into the effectiveness of this application through mini-tests to obtain verified results for the previous studies' problems Supervisor: Ho Thi Hien, M.A Page 29 Student’s full name: Duong Tan Nhat Student ID Number: 17078651 REFERENCES A, Bhat (2005) Quantitative Research Retrieved April 9, 2021, from https://www.questionpro.com/blog/quantitative-research/ Alizadeh, I (2016) Vocabulary teaching techniques: A review of common practices International Journal of Research in English Education, 1(1), 22-30 Anjaniputra, A G., & Salsabila, V A (2018) The merits of Quizlet for vocabulary learning at tertiary level Indonesian EFL Journal, 4(2), 1-11 Byrne, D (1995) Games Teaching Oral English Harlow: Longman Group UK Limited: pp 101103 Carston, Robyn (2012) "Word meaning and concept expressed."
