7 Figure 1-2: Rice Production in Vietnam, 1961–2012 Source: Rice Pedia (2013) On the supply side, total paddy production has more than doubled during the last three decades, from 19 million tonnes in 1990 to 43 million tonnes in 2012 (Rice Pedia, 2015) The annual growth rate of paddy production during this period has increased by 3.8%; the corresponding increase in cultivated area and yield were however 1.1% and 2.7%, respectively Since the early 2000s, the pressures on urbanisation and industrialisation for economic development have reduced the land areas available for rice production by 1% annually (JICA, 2013; Rice Pedia, 2014) The adoption of new technologies has however contributed to increasing yields, thus helping the farmers remain productive and ensuring sufficient food supply for both domestic consumption and export demands Figure 1-2 shows trends in paddy production over the last three decades, with corresponding area and yields In terms of demand, Vietnamese people consume only 54% of total rice produced; hence, Vietnam has been food secure at the national-level Over the last four decades, there has been big improvements in people’s incomes and economic situation, as shown in Figure 1-3; the components of daily food have changed also, less rice portion which has resulted in a decline in the paddy demand per person, by 1.7% per year (Rice Pedia , 2015)
