Introduction The evaluation of conformity refers to the completed precast elements which are supplied to the market and covers all the production operations carried out in the factory For design rules reference is made to EN 1992-1-1 Additional complementary rules are provided where necessary NOTE This European Standard is applied in Europe under different climatic and geographical conditions, different levels of protection and under different, well-established, regional traditions and experience Classes for EPS blocks have been introduced to cover these situations Where such general solutions were not possible, the relevant clauses contain permission for the application of national standards or provisions valid in the place of use of the EPS Blocks (see 4.3.3) BS EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 (E) Scope This European Standard deals with the requirements and the basic performance criteria for blocks made in expanded polystyrene (EPS), used in conjunction with precast concrete beams in compliance with EN 15037-1, with or without cast-in-situ concrete for the construction of beam-and-block floor systems EPS block may be totally made in EPS or combined with different materials such as plaster or wood wool If EPS is combined with other materials, these materials should not contribute to more than 50 % of the mechanical resistance of the block If not, the block is covered by EN 15037-5, Precast concrete products ― Beam-and-block floor systems ― Part 5: Lightweight blocks for simple formwork Examples of typology of floor systems are used shall comply the relevant requirements defined in EN 13163 If other materials are used in combination with EPS, there suitability shall be established The establishment of suitability may result from a European Standard which refers specifically to the use of this material in building products; in absence of a European Standard it may also result, under the same conditions, from an ISO standard Where this material is not covered by a European or International Standard, or if it deviates from the requirements of these standards, the establishment of suitability may result from:  the relevant national standards or provisions valid in the place of use of the product which refer specifically to the use of this material in building products; or  a European Technical Approval specifically for the use of this material in building products 4.2 Production requirements Only the materials in accordance with 4.1 shall be used in the production of EPS blocks 4.3 Finished product requirements 4.3.1 Geometrical properties NOTE For technical documentation, see Clause 4.3.1.1 Production tolerances 4.3.1.1.1 Dimensional tolerances The dimensions shall be verified according to 5.1.1 The tolerances on the dimensions are given in Table BS EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 (E) Annex F (informative) Calculation assumptions for calculating the thermal resistance of floors In general, calculation is performed for the system based on its dimensional properties However, the following simplifications and assumptions are accepted: a) lateral clearance between the support nib and the beam (dimension j3): Calculation is performed as though this space were filled with concrete; b) lateral clearance between the toe of the beam and the block (dimension j1): Calculation is performed as though this space were filled with polystyrene; this clearance will be continuous down to the air space as shown in Figure F.1 Key EPS block air space Figure F.1 — Clearance between the beam and the block In the case of a system combining blocks having a support nib shape different from that of the toe of the beam, the calculations shall be performed as shown in the following diagrams: BS EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 (E) Key EPS block concrete Figure F.2 — Support nib shape different from that of the toe of the beam vertical clearance between the toe of the beam and the tongue (dimension j2): The air space is introduced as an equivalent thermal conductivity which is calculated in accordance with EN ISO 6946 c) Key r y tongue overlap width lateral clearance of the tongue connection Figure F.3 — Clearance and overlap of the tongue d) tongue overlap (dimension r): The calculation performed is valid only for r ≥ 10 mm In other configurations, a special study shall be performed; e) lateral clearance of the tongue connection (dimension y): BS EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 (E) 1) if < y ≤ mm: calculation is performed with a closed, unventilated air space, the equivalent thermal conductivity of which is calculated in accordance with EN ISO 6946; 2) if < y ≤ 10 mm: calculation is performed in accordance with EN ISO 10077-2, i.e with a closed, slightly ventilated air space, the equivalent thermal conductivity of which is equal to twice that calculated in accordance with EN ISO 6946; 3) if y > 10 mm: calculation is performed by applying surface heat transfer to the developed surface created by the tongue; f) representation of the cores: the thermal conductivity of the air in the cores is represented by its equivalent thermal conductivity determined in accordance with EN ISO 6946 Non rectangular cores are transformed into an equivalent rectangular surface in accordance with the method given by EN ISO 10077-2, and the thermal conductivity calculated as per EN ISO 6946 based on this equivalent rectangular surface is applied to the true geometry of the cores; g) surface heat transfer: the calculations are performed assuming a floor over a crawl space, a basement or a cellar (descending vertical thermal flow); h) interior and exterior temperature: the calculation being performed in steady-state conditions, the imposed temperature difference is not an influential parameter However, calculations are usually performed with an interior temperature of 20 °C and an exterior temperature of °C, i.e a difference of 20 K; i) thermal conductivity of materials: the concrete shall be represented by a thermal conductivity of W/(m⋅K) (beams and compression flange) The thickness of the compression flange shall be cm unless otherwise specified The thermal conductivity of the expanded polystyrene to be allowed for is given below as a function of the type of polystyrene; j) the lines separating two materials having the same thermal properties on the system diagrams used for the calculation may be eliminated for meshing; k) for blocks with a variable core cross section (tapered base) over the length of the block, the calculation shall be performed for the floor system built with the block presenting mean core cross sections; l) when a core is truncated on the system drawing used for calculation, the thermal conductivity of the core is that obtained by calculation based on its complete geometry BS EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 EN 15037-4:2010+A1:2013 (E)
