12519:2004 and the following apply 3.1 sash balance device, generally fitted in a pair and used to counter-balance the mass of a vertically moving sash throughout its full travel 3.2 manually applied force externally applied vertical force required to cause movement of the sliding sash when the sash balances are mounted in the test specimen Classification 4.1 General The classification for sash balances shall be in accordance with the requirements of Clause of EN 13126-1:2011 4.2 Category of use (1 – first digit) No marking is required for the category of use in accordance with 4.2 of EN 13126-1:2011 4.3 Durability (2 – second digit) Grades shall be in accordance with 4.3 of EN 13126-1:2011 BS EN 13126-13:2012 EN 13126-13:2012 (E) 4.4 Mass (3 – third digit) The mass shall be the actual mass of the test sash 4.5 Fire resistance (4 – fourth digit) One grade shall be identified in accordance with 4.5 of EN 13126-1:2011 grade 0: no requirements 4.6 Safety in use (5 – fifth digit) One grade shall be identified in accordance with 4.6 of EN 13126-1:2011 grade 1: The sash balance shall conform to the requirements of EN 13126-1 4.7 Corrosion resistance (6 – sixth digit) Grades shall be in accordance with 4.7 of EN 13126-1:2011 4.8 Security (7 – seventh digit) No marking is required for the category of security in accordance with 4.8 of EN 13126-1:2011 4.9 Application (8 – eighth digit) The eighth digit shall be assigned in accordance with Table NOTE Table shows the grades “13/1”, “13/2”, “13/3”, “13/4” “13/5”, “13/6”, “13/7” and “13/8”, which indicate the part of the standard which was used for testing the sash balances and their rating 4.10 Test Sizes (9 – ninth digit) The ninth digit shall show the test sizes in accordance with 4.10 of EN 13126-1:2011 as classifications: Digit category of use (no requirements) Digit durability grade (25 000 cycles) Digit mass 30 kg Digit fire resistance grade (no requirements) Digit safety in use grade Digit corrosion resistance grade Digit security (no requirements) Digit applicable part grade 13/5; tested in accordance with part 13 of this standard, and rated as requiring an applied force of >30% test mass to initiate movement Digit test sizes S.W = 100 mm, S.H = 200 mm S.W = sash width S.H = sash height Requirements 5.1 General The requirements for sash balances shall be in accordance with Clause of EN 13126-1:2011 NOTE Where a sash balance is adjustable, it should be set according to the manufacturer's recommendations 5.2 Integrated maximum opening stop Where sash balances are fitted with an integrated maximum opening stop, the opening stop shall also be tested in accordance with EN 13126-5 5.3 Free movement test The test specified in 7.2 shall be used to ensure the sash balances can support the mass of the sash Upon completion of the free movement test in accordance with 7.2, the maximum travel distance shall not exceed 25 mm BS EN 13126-13:2012 EN 13126-13:2012 (E) 5.4 Durability test The test specified in 7.3 shall be used to ensure the sash balances are capable of continued operation after cycling in accordance with grades specified in 7.3, and with regard given to normal maintenance Upon completion of the durability test in accordance with 7.3, the sash balances shall continue to function normally 5.5 Resistance to manually applied load test The test specified in 7.4 shall be used to ensure the sash balances are graded in relation to the ease of sash movement Upon completion of the manually applied load test in accordance with 7.4, the manually 13/7 > 10 13/8 >0 5.6 Corrosion resistance test The sash balance shall be tested and classified in accordance with EN 1670 Test apparatus 6.1 Sash balances installed in the test specimen The sash balances shall be installed in the test specimen for testing in accordance with Clause of EN 13126-1:2011 NOTE Please note the manufacturer’s fixing instructions BS EN 13126-13:2012 EN 13126-13:2012 (E) 6.2 Test specimens from the sash balance manufacturer The test specimens shall be accompanied by a drawing of the profile cross-section All relevant maintenance and operation information shall be enclosed with the test specimen; it shall also contain the necessary test specimen installation information for the windows 6.3 Test rig The test shall be conducted on a test rig which corresponds in function and shape to the window for which the sash balance is intended 6.4 Hardware The tested sash balance shall conform to the manufacturer's recommendation for size and mass of the test specimen Test methods 7.1 Samples Three samples shall be used for testing in accordance with this European Standard Sample A - performance tests Sample B - corrosion test Sample C - retained for reference control NOTE Sample B should only be required if the manufacturer of the sash balance cannot supply a test report in accordance with EN 1670 NOTE Sample C should be retained by the test institute for the duration of the validity of the test report 7.2 Free movement test procedure Position the sliding sash with the sash (50 ± 1) mm from the fully closed position (see Figure A.1 for top sliding sash; see Figure A.3 for bottom sliding sash) Remove all external forces and record any movement of the sliding sash over a period of 60 s Position the sliding sash with the sash (50 ± 1) mm from the fully open position (see Figure A.2 for top sliding sash; see Figure A.4 for bottom sliding sash) Remove all external forces and record any movement of the sliding sash over a period of 60 s NOTE The fully open position may be determined by maximum opening stops Acceptance criteria are in accordance with 8.4 of EN 13126-1:2011, and 5.3 of this standard 7.3 Durability test procedure The sash balance(s) shall be mounted NOTE Please note the manufacturer’s fitting instructions Cycles shall be at a velocity between 0,12 m/s (7,3 m/min) and 0,15 m/s (9,2 m/min) 10 BS EN 13126-13:2012 EN 13126-13:2012 (E) NOTE A rest time of not more than 30 s is permissible between cycles grade : 10 000 cycles (+ %) cycles grade : 15 000 cycles (+ %) cycles grade : 25 000 cycles (+ %) cycles The sash balances shall be cycled from a fully open position to a fully closed position NOTE All moving parts requiring lubrication should be lubricated in accordance with sash balance manufacturers’ instructions NOTE The fully open position may be determined by maximum opening stops Acceptance criteria are in accordance with 8.4 of EN 13126-1:2011, and 5.4 of this standard 7.4 Resistance to manually applied load test procedure Position the sliding sash so that the sash is (50 ± 1) mm from the fully closed position (see Figure A.1 for top sliding sash; see Figure A.3 for bottom sliding sash) Apply a load, without shock, in the direction of opening on the sliding sash in increments of N until the sliding sash moves Measure and record the load in Newtons Position the sliding sash so that the sash is (50 ± 1) mm from the fully open position (see Figure A.2 for top sliding sash; see Figure A.4 for bottom sliding sash) Apply a load, without shock, in the direction of closing on the sliding sash in increments of N until the sliding sash moves Measure and record the load in Newtons The sash balances shall meet the requirements of 8.4 of EN 13126-1:2011 Using the highest recorded load Figure, calculate the percentage of the sash mass as shown Multiply the load Figure in Newtons by 0,102 to determine the load figure in kilograms and divide by the sash mass and multiply by 100 to achieve the manually applied force percentage Use the manually applied force percentage to assign the grade in accordance with Table of this standard NOTE The fully open position may be determined
