systems for gas appliances NA.1 Terms and definitions NA.1.1 freestanding terminal terminal designed for fitting directly to the outlet of an open flue system NA.1.2 ridge terminal terminal designed for fitting at the ridge of a building NA.2 General This annex gives information in order to design and construct a satisfactory Type B concrete flue block system, known in the UK as precast concrete flue blocks for gas appliances, previously covered by BS 1289-1:1986 The Type B concrete flue block system can be constructed as either a custom-built chimney or as a system chimney as defined in BS EN 1443:2003 It is essential that: a) individual flue blocks should comply with this standard and be appropriate for the intended appliance; b) joints should be correctly made; c) bonded flue blocks should be coursed with the adjacent masonry; d) all jointing material and mortar extrusions into the flue should be removed at the time of construction; e) the manufacturer’s instructions should be followed; f) the recommendations in relevant third-party specifications, should be used to supplement the recommendations in clauses NA.2, NA.3 and NA.4 NOTE Attention is drawn to Approved Document J Combustion appliances and fuel storage 2010 to the Building Regulations 2000 The Building Regulations (Scotland) 2004 and the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000 Reference should be made to the guidance on the design and installation of flue block systems given in Annex D (informative) of BS 5440-1:2008 This national annex does not provide design criteria for the wall containing the flue block system, such as for structural stability, sound insulation or thermal insulation A typical flue block system is shown in figure NA.4 NA.3 Design NA.3.1 Height The flue block system should have an equivalent height at least equal to, and preferably exceeding, that required for the appliance to be connected, as recommended in BS 5440-1:2008 The actual height of the flue should generally exceed the specified equivalent height, due to the extra resistance of flue block systems as described in BS 5440-1:2008 56 BS EN 1858:2008+A1:2011 EN 1858:2008+A1:2011 (E) NA.3.2 Bonding When using bonded flue blocks, the design should take into account the height of any access block or transfer block to ensure that the lowest flue block aligns with, and bonds into, the masonry courses (as illustrated in figure NA.4) NA.3.3 Gas fires For a gas fire flue, where access blocks are used, they should form an opening at least 610 mm high, measured from the finished floor level This opening can be partially filled in at the bottom to suit a particular gas fire NA.3.4 Temperature Due to possible high surface temperatures on the wall immediately above an appliance, direct plastering is not recommended and preferably an air space or some form of insulated lining should be used (see figure NA.5) NA.4 Terminals NA.4.1 Design No opening in the terminal should allow a 16 mm diameter sphere to pass through when subjected to a force of N NOTE Typical terminals are shown in figure NA.1 NOTE All terminals should be designed so that they are unlikely to be blocked by leaves and/or snow and will minimize entry of birds, rain, snow or condensate to the building fabric NA.4.2 Flow resistance — terminals When tested for flow resistance as described in clause NA.4.3, a flue terminal should have a resistance factor, K , not greater than for free standing terminals (see NA.1.1), or not greater than 15 for ridge terminals (see NA.1.2) NA.4.3 Determination of flow resistance of terminals The apparatus for testing freestanding or ridge terminals is shown in figure NA.2 or figure NA.3 respectively The wind generator should be capable of delivering a wind front approximately m square at speeds of up to 10 m/s The fan should have throughputs in the range of 40 m3/h and 120 m3/h, and the orifice plate to measure the flow should be sized accordingly The length of straight flue pipe below the flue terminal should be at least m and of the same work size diameter as the flue terminal A pitot tube should be used to measure the static pressure 0,5 m below the terminal NA.4.3.1 Procedure for freestanding terminals and ridge terminals under wind-free Conditions NA.4.3.1.1 Measure the static pressure in millibars within the flue 0,5 m below the terminal for a range of flue flows between 40 m3/h and 80 m3/h for 125 mm terminals, or between 60 m3/h and 120 m3/h, for 150 mm terminals 57 BS EN 1858:2008+A1:2011 EN 1858:2008+A1:2011 (E) NA.4.3.1.2 Plot a graph of static pressure in millibars against the square of the flue flow in cubic metres per hour NOTE This graph should be a straight line passing through the origin Record the maximum static pressure in millibars NA.4.3.1.3 Calculate the resistance factor, K , of the flue terminal using the following equation: K = slope of graph × C Where C is a constant which equals 3,43 × 105 for a 125 mm internal diameter flue pipe, or 7,11 × 105 for a 150 mm internal diameter flue pipe NA.4.3.2 Procedure for freestanding terminals under wind conditions NA.4.3.2.1 Position the terminal symmetrically about the vertical axis and in the centre of the wind front NA.4.3.2.2 Use two wind approach angles measured in the horizontal plane, one with the wind blowing in between supports and the other with the wind blowing at the support NA.4.3.2.3 Use three wind approach angles measured in the vertical plane, one with plunging at 30° to the horizontal, one in the horizontal plane and one with the wind ascending at 30° to the horizontal NA.4.3.2.4 Use three wind speeds, m/s, m/s and 10 m/s NA.4.3.2.5 For all combinations of variables, i.e horizontal approach angle (see clause NA.4.3.2.2), vertical approach angle (see clause NA.4.3.2.3) and wind speed (see clause NA.4.3.2.4), follow the procedure described in clause NA.4.3.1 to establish the flow resistance for the two ranges of flue flows given in clause NA.4.3.1.1, which represent the lower and upper limits of the flue pipes being used NA.4.3.3 Procedure for ridge terminals under wind conditions NA.4.3.3.1 Fit the ridge terminal into a test roof having a pitch angle of 42,5° (see figure NA.3), using the ridge-type adaptor recommended by the manufacturer NA.4.3.3.2 Apply wind fronts of velocity m/s, m/s and 10 m/s horizontally, and rotate the roof in 30° steps such that the angle of approach is 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 150° and 180° 58 BS EN 1858:2008+A1:2011 EN 1858:2008+A1:2011 (E) NA.4.3.3.3 Calculate the flow resistance of the terminal as described in clause NA.4.3.1 for the maximum and minimum flue flows under all test wind speeds and at all angles NA.5 Construction NA.5.1 Condition Flue blocks should be examined prior to construction, paying particular attention to tolerances and joint finish Damaged or otherwise defective blocks should be rejected NA.5.2 Coursing Bonded flue blocks should be built in course by course with the surrounding masonry as the work proceeds and bonding should begin immediately above any access or transfer blocks (see figure NA.4) It is important to ensure that the blocks are built in at successive courses to achieve structural integrity of the wall Flue blocks may be assembled spigot or socket uppermost, in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions NA.5.3 Support Non-bonded flue blocks should be properly supported and jointed or tied into adjacent walls in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions NA.5.4 Joints Joints between blocks should be fully bedded to produce a continuous flue with imperforate walls The flues in adjacent blocks should be aligned to within mm Surplus jointing material or mortar should be cored out of the flue leaving a uniform surface NA.5.5 Blocks to be used All flues should be constructed using the correct access and transfer blocks (see figure B.6 of this standard) Inclined sections of flues should be constructed only by using appropriate offset blocks (see figure B.6 of this standard) Where the angle of the pipe exit from a transfer block is not at the same angle as the flue in the block, an appropriate angle transfer block should be used NOTE Access blocks are also referred to as starter components in BS 5440-1:2008 NA.5.6 Cavity walls Where a flue projects across a cavity wall, so reducing the cavity, a vertical damp-proof membrane (d.p.m.) should be inserted as the work proceeds (see figure NA.5) NA.5.7 Inspection The flue should be inspected carefully throughout construction and any necessary remedial action taken as the work proceeds See Annex D.9 of BS 5440-1:2008 59 BS EN 1858:2008+A1:2011 EN 1858:2008+A1:2011 (E) Figure NA.1 — Typical ridge terminals BS EN 1858:2008+A1:2011 EN
