with the support of the Home Office and organizations connected with law enforcement, the motor vehicle construction industry, vehicle equipment industry and vehicle user organizations Hitherto, no standard has existed for the United Kingdom that defines the performance and use of systems intended to prevent or deter unauthorized removal of in- car equipment It is recognized that the requirements contained in this standard may also be suitable for the protection of other items of equipment fitted either temporarily or permanently to the vehicle but not mentioned specifically in this standard such as visual display units, telephones and map displays This standard covers a relatively new area, not previously standardized, and it may be necessary to amend the requirements resulting from the initial experience of its use This Part of BS AU 209 is intended to provide protection against unauthorized removal of in- car equipment by one of the following: a) preventing removal of the equipment (unless it is of the retractable type) using simple tools; b) providing for coding system(s) in the actual equipment which will render the unit inoperable once removed from the vehicle; c) specifying a system of modular construction (see 2.2 ) Experience will show which of these three options is most effective in preventing theft bearing in mind the cost of replacing stolen equipment and repairing any consequential damage incurred when the equipment was removed from the vehicle Other Parts of BS AU 209 are: — Part : Sp ecificatio n fo r m echanical lo cking system s for p assenger cars and car deriv ed v ehicles; — Part 3: Sp ecification for security m arking of glazing for p assenger cars and car deriv ed v ehicles; — Part 4: Sp ecification for security glazing for p assenger cars and car deriv ed v ehicles — 1) ; Part 5: Sp ecification for or central p ow er lo cking system s for p assenger cars and car deriv ed v ehicles — Part 1) ; 6: Sp ecificatio n for door dead locking system s for p assenger cars and car deriv ed v ehicles 1) A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application C ompliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages and and a back cover This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover 1) ii In preparation © BSI 02- 2000 Li cen sed Copy: Lon d on Sou th Ban k U n i versi ty, Lon d on Sou th Ban k U n i versi ty, Fri Dec 08 6: 58: 39 G M the performance and use of systems intended to installed in the vehicle, the mounting(s) or deter or prevent the theft of in- car radio, audio and attachment device(s) are not readily accessible visual equipment used for entertainment and The equipment shall be tested as described in communications, hereinafter referred to as Appendix A and shall be deemed to comply if the “equipment”, in passenger cars and car derived equipment has not been removed in a time of vehicles 3.5 Equipment incorporating a coded device This Part of BS AU 209 applies to equipment fitted 3.5.1 The equipment shall be provided with a during vehicle manufacture and after market facility to accept a unique code such that equipment interruption of the power supply renders the This Part of BS AU 209 does not apply to ancillary equipment inoperable until the correct code is equipment such as aerials, interconnections, reinserted The equipment shall be tested as balance controls and loudspeakers Tests to determine compliance with this standard are described in Appendix A and Appendix B described in Appendix B and shall only be operable with the correct code 3.5.2 The equipment shall be suitably marked in a prominent position indicating that a degree of Definitions protection is afforded For the purposes of this Part of BS AU 209 the 3.5.3 To resist attempts to defeat the code, the following definitions apply 2.1 retractable equipment equipment which is designed to be quickly and easily removed from (or replaced in) a vehicle, without the use of tools, by the occupant when leaving the vehicle unattended 2.2 modular system a system where the equipment is separated into at least three functional parts that are located in non- adj acent areas of the vehicle 2.3 functional part a part essential for the operation of the equipment and for which simple tools cannot be substituted facility shall be designed so that it is not possible to work through all the available differs in the code group in less than 00 h 3.5.4 Any provision for changing the code shall not reduce the level of security 3.5.5 The manufacturer shall provide the following information for each system submitted for test: a) the number of elements in the code group and the number of character choices for each element; b) the total number of codes, correct and incorrect, in the code group; c) the correct code for the sample of equipment submitted for test; d) any time delay required by the equipment between code insertion 3.6 Modular system equipment The equipment shall be a modular system (see 2.2 ) Security systems 3.1 General and shall be suitably marked in a prominent position to indicate that a degree of protection is afforded Equipment shall employ at least one of the systems specified in 3.2 to 3.6 Test sample 3.2 Retractable equipment Tests shall be carried out on a complete vehicle or The equipment shall be retractable (see 2.1 ) and representative portion thereof taken as a random shall incorporate an audible warning or carry visual sample marking to indicate the need for removal when the vehicle is left unattended Security marking 3.3 Lockable in place equipment Equipment shall be permanently and indelibly The equipment shall be lockable in place using a lock complying with the requirements of clause of BS AU 209- : 986 © BSI 02- 2000 marked with a unique serial number
