- Graduate Academy of Social Sciences Library INTRODUCTION The necessity of the research topic The Vietnamese patriotic philosophy is a noble spiritual value that crystallizes the most profound thoughts and feelings of Vietnamese people in the nation's history of building and defense That philosophy is the source of strength and the “launch base” to help Vietnamese overcome troubles and challenges to achieve glorious victories, as the standard sacred value of the entire nation and the Vietnamese community living, working, and studying abroad It has become a political, ethical, and aesthetic principle and a typical characteristic of Vietnamese characters The history of Vietnam has shown the great strength of patriotic philosophy in the struggle to build and defend the Fatherland In modern times, with the creative thinking of Ho Chi Minh and the correct line of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the patriotic philosophy continues to be promoted and added more new contents about the national liberation struggle and the path to socialism in Vietnam In the current context, when the process of globalization is taking place more and more intensely and affecting countries around the world; when conflicts in the world still exist and manifest in different forms and levels; when dangers and challenges of national independence and security are being posed daily to the existence and prosperity of the nation, the inheritance and promotion of patriotic philosophy become more and more urgent to the Vietnamese revolution Moving on to socialism in our country is a process of profound change in all areas of social life that requires each Vietnamese person must promote their capability and intelligence The young Vietnamese generation, especially university students, have played a massive role in the process They are a frontline and creative force in social life, one of the decisive factors for the success of the cause of industrialization, modernization, international integration, and moving on to socialism With the cause of building and defending the Fatherland for rich people, a strong country, democracy, justice, and civilization, in addition to educating scientific knowledge, it is vital to educate Vietnamese patriotic philosophy for students Because students are still very young, have a young life experience, and are pretty sensitive to socio-political issues, sometimes extreme if not well-oriented Especially aphrenia, low ethics and moral values, and lifestyle qualities among students, reflecting on pursuing of purely material values, devout thoughts, and foreign cultures, leading to disregarding the fine customs and traditions or forgetting the traditional values of the nation Now more than ever, the noble values of patriotic philosophy need to be constantly aroused, strengthened and fostered for the young, especially students Correctly perceiving and realizing the patriotic philosophy positively will become a material force contributing to the prosperity of the country, the happiness of the people, and glory of the nation For the above analysis, the author chooses the research titled “Vietnamese patriotic philosophy and the meaning of educating such philosophy for students of universities in Vietnam nowadays” as my doctoral dissertation Research purpose and tasks 2.1 Research purpose Base on of clarifying the concept, formation, and essential contents of Vietnamese patriotic philosophy, the dissertation draws out the meaning of educating patriotic philosophy for students of universities in our country today 2.2 Research tasks The dissertation tries to solve the following basic tasks: - Reviewing literature - Clarifying the concept and basis of forming the Vietnamese patriotic philosophy - Clarifying some basic contents and analyzing the core values of Vietnam's patriotic philosophy - Analyzing the meaning of educating patriotic philosophy for students of universities in Vietnam nowadays Research subject and scope 3.1 Research subject Vietnamese patriotic philosophy and the meaning of educating patriotic philosophy for students 3.2 Research scope Spatially, the dissertation examines Vietnamese patriotic philosophy through several typical works and the meaning of educating such philosophy for Vietnamese students studying at domestic universities Regarding time: First, the dissertation mainly examines patriotic philosophy in the history of Vietnam from the Van Lang period to 1945 Second, the dissertation examines the meaning of educating patriotic philosophy for Vietnamese students from 2010 to the present Methodology and research methods 4.1 Methodology The dissertation is based on the theoretical basis of dialectical and historical materialism about social existence and social consciousness, and the role of social consciousness in development 4.2 Research methods The dissertation uses historical and logical methods and other research methods such as analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, comparison, document and interdisciplinary social sciences and humanities methods New contributions of the dissertation The dissertation contributes to clarifying the concept of “Vietnamese patriotic philosophy” from a philosophical perspective; “History of Vietnamese thought” (volume 1) by Nguyen Tai Thu (ed.); “History of Vietnamese Thought” (volume 2) by Le Sy Thang (ed.); “Understanding the spiritual values of Vietnamese people” by Truong Chinh in “Vietnamese bravery” by Tran Van Giau; “History of Vietnamese philosophical thought” edited by Nguyen Trong Chuan; “Vietnamese patriotism in the second half of the 19th century” and “Characteristics and role of Vietnamese patriotism in the second half of the 19th century” by Nguyen Nam Thang; the unyielding will of the Vietnamese people; the spirit of humanity; and pride of the Vietnamese people 1.3 Research works related to the meaning of educating patriotic philosophy for Vietnamese students nowadays So far there have not been many research works on Vietnamese patriotic philosophy Thus, there have not been many studies on the meaning of educating Vietnamese patriotic philosophy for students as well Some relevant studies such as “Patriotism in the cause of industrialization and modernization” by Luong Gia Ban, “Traditional values in challenges of globalization”; “Thinking about preserving and promoting traditional ethical values in Vietnam today” by Nguyen Dinh Tuong; “On cultural development and human construction in the period of industrialization and modernization” edited by Pham Minh Hac and Nguyen Khoa Diem; “Promoting the patriotic tradition of Vietnam in the current period” by Nguyen Thi Nga and “Ethical education and personality development of Vietnamese students” by Tran Sy Phan Doctoral dissertation in philosophy “Educating Vietnamese patriotism for students of People's Public Security schools in Ho Chi Minh City today” by Nguyen Van Duong In these works, the authors have clarified the important role of patriotism and affirmed the meaning of educating students on traditional values including patriotism Thenceforth, enriching the content of traditional moral values in the new era and continue fostering “the patriotic spirit” of the people along with socialism and international spirit of the proletariat so as to develop student personality towards socialist ideals 1.4 General overview of previous studies and the issues need to be further examined in the dissertation 1.4.1 Some major achievements of previous studies related to the dissertation First, some research works have discussed "philosophy", distinguishing it from some relevant concepts such as “wisdom” or “philosophy” and clarifying some concepts such as “Vietnamese patriotism”, “Vietnamese patriotic ideology”, and Vietnamese people’s “patriotic spirit” However, “patriotic philosophy” has not been clearly analyzed from a philosophical perspective Second, previous research works have mainly discussed the basis of the formation and content of patriotic spirit, patriotic thought, and Vietnamese patriotism but have not systematically examined the basis of the formation and the content of Vietnamese patriotic philosophy Third, so far there have been works on educating Vietnamese patriotic philosophy for students but not many As such, it can be seen that, in Vietnam, studies on patriotism, patriotic spirit, and patriotic thought have been mentioned a lot but studies on Vietnamese patriotic philosophy have not been systematically examined, especially studies on Vietnamese patriotic philosophy and the meaning of educating such philosophy for university students in our country today However, previous studies on issues related to Vietnamese patriotic philosophy are useful references for the author to carry out the dissertation 1.4.2 The issues need to be further examined in the dissertation First, clarify the connotation of the concept of “philosophy”, introduce the concept of “Vietnamese patriotic philosophy” based on worldview and philosophical methodology, and then generalize the basis of forming Vietnamese patriotic philosophy Second, the dissertation seeks to examine, identify, interpret, and clarify some basic contents of Vietnamese patriotic philosophy in history Third, by examining, the study determines the value of Vietnamese patriotic philosophy, the author draws out the meaning of educating such philosophy for university students in our country today Sub-summary of chapter By reviewing the literature and overviewing research results of previous research works related to the dissertation, the author found that there have not been many studies on Vietnamese patriotic philosophy Previous research works have mainly discussed Vietnamese patriotism, patriotic thought, and patriotic spirit That has posed the requirement that the dissertation needs to supplement and clarify the concept, basic contents, and value of Vietnamese patriotic philosophy; analyze the meaning of educating such philosophy for Vietnamese students Second, the history of the nation’s struggle against foreign invaders Vietnam is located in a favorable position, so it had become an annexation target by many ambitious and expansionist forces Therefore, the Vietnamese people have been educated the sense of building nation and national defense very soon In each period, each war had deeply carved its own imprints, which are valuable lessons handed down from generation to generation, and supplement important contents for the Vietnamese patriotic philosophy The formation and development of Vietnam's patriotic philosophy are associated with the history of fighting against foreign aggression, defending national independence, and reunification; it is always associated with the spirit of peace and friendship Third, the history of formation and unification of the country In the process of national construction and development, along with the social division and the fight against invaders, as well as production activities consider preconditions for the state to come out Van Lang State was born early This is the first centralized state model in Vietnam Although it was still infancy, it has been confirmed that Vietnam is a sovereign country and has leaders to manage and run the country, those are the Hung Kings After the Northern domination period, through the Ngo, Dinh, Le, Ly, Tran and post-Le dynasties, the centralized feudal state was increasingly consolidated and developed They held the power to dominate the entire development of society Thereby, a close relationship between the state and the people was formed in the process of national construction, protection and development The Vietnamese patriotic philosophy has since been formed and is constantly developing The State’s formation and development is also the process of national unification and has profoundly affected patriotism and national consciousness for making the spirit of national unity and solidarity 2.2.2 Cultural basis 11 Vietnam has a very unique, diverse, and rich culture, especially the Dong Son culture in the North, the Sa Huynh culture in the South Central region, the Oc Eo culture in the South It is the long-term coexistence of the Vietnamese ethnic communities in the same territory and agricultural production activities based on an Asian mode of production, speaking the same language (Vietnamese), same customs and practices of ancestor worship The philosophy of life and actions of Vietnamese people is the integration of their customs, beliefs, and lifestyles in accordance with their living conditions On the other hand, social existence regulates the social consciousness of Vietnamese people in the process of creating cultural and ideological values Since then, the Vietnamese nation’s unique patriotic philosophy has been formed Vietnamese always try to preserve, build and develop the nation’s cultural values and have constantly absorbed and refined humanity’s cultural quintessence to enrich Vietnamese culture Sub-summary of chapter “Philosophy” is the most common views on the social field, it is mainly expressed in short and concise language so as to guide people in cognitive and practical activities Vietnam's patriotic philosophy is expressed in two aspects: sentiment and ideology This philosophy is a mental and theoretical product to be drawn from the nation’s experiences, expressing love for the homeland, country and Vietnamese people, as well as loyalty and determination to build and defend the Fatherland The patriotic philosophy was formed in the process of building and defending the country, from specific natural, socioeconomic, and cultural conditions of the country The Vietnamese patriotic philosophy has become a vitality philosophy 12 Chapter BASIC CONTENTS OF VIETNAMESE PATRIOTIC PHILOSOPHY 3.1 Philosophy of loving homeland, country, and national independence and sovereignty 3.1.1 Philosophy of loving homeland and country Homeland is the place where Vietnamese people were born, raised, and grew up It is the birthplace of unique cultural values, creating a thousand-year history of civilization Love for homeland is expressed first as a strong attachment to family, clan, village, commune, and community that each person belongs to Love for homeland is extended from love village to love country This sentiment is the glue that combines Vietnamese generations in a family, village, and country together Love for home and village becomes love for the Fatherland Love for homeland is also expressed in a sense of responsibility and determination to build a richer and stronger homeland, contributing to the common development of Vietnam Vietnamese have united and resolutely resisted invaders to keep the sacred land built by their forefathers, have constantly struggled to protect the fruits of labor and villages to bring happiness to the people and peace to the country Love for the homeland and preserving the national territory are the first basic conditions for the nation’s existence and development 3.1.2 Philosophy of loyalty to the country and the people Country is a general concept indicating nature geography, territory, ethnicity; those who own their territory; families, homelands, villages and societies with corresponding politico-economic institutions; more broadly, classes, nation, and fatherland with certain socio-political regimes in each period Historically, our ancestors have always had a sense of respect and obedience to the “leaders” in the process of building and defending the country The people’s loyalty to “the Supreme Being” is appreciated 13 A special feature of the Vietnamese patriotic philosophy is the flexible handling of the relationship between loyal to the king and patriotism The ruling class set out the right policies for the country’s development The people try to implement the policies of the ruling class They realize that having their own king will become an autonomous country and loyalty to the king also means loyalty to the country Inheriting and developing the philosophy of loyalty to the country of our ancestors, President Ho Chi Minh used it and introduced a new content that is loyalty to the country and filial piety to the people The philosophy of loyalty to the country has been clearly demonstrated in the dialectical relationship between “People” and “Country” through periods of Vietnamese history The ruling class loves the people very much, and upholds the role and strength of the people The people have devoted their wisdom and talents to the country The patriotic philosophy has become “self-motivation” for political forces in society to strive for the goal of national development so as to ensure a peaceful and happy life for the people and firmly defend the independence and freedom of the Fatherland 3.1.3 Philosophy of independent will and national sovereignty Nationality is a unified, stable and sustainable community in terms of language, territory, economy and culture In the process of formation and development, the Vietnamese nation was often threatened and invaded by powerful foreign forces Therefore, in the awareness and mentality of each Vietnamese person, he/she always has a sense of national independence and national sovereignty, considering it an inviolable sacred right With a strong will, confidence, and determination to preserve the country and national independence, the Vietnamese people defeated foreign invasion During wartime as well as peacetime, Vietnamese feudal dynasties have always shown the line of independence and self14 reliance and equality with the northern neighbor and always attach great importance to protecting national sovereignty The strength and independent will are expressed by the patriotic movements of the Vietnamese people against the French colonialists The will to unify the country and resolutely fight against the division of the country National independence and territorial integrity are very sacred things for the Vietnamese people Philosophy of national independence and national sovereignty is clearly expressed and raised to new heights in Ho Chi Minh's patriotism The young generation has followed his father's footsteps to preserve independence and protect the integrity of the nation's territory They have overcome difficulties, natural disasters, and enermy in order to build the homeland and the country richer and stronger, and firmly defend the socialist Fatherland Regardless of the conditions, our people must resolutely defend the country's independence and freedom, territorial integrity, sacred sovereignty of the Fatherland and the highest interests of the Vietnamese people This is the immutable principle 3.2 Philosophy of love and respect for people 3.2.1 Philosophy of loving race Since the Hung Vuong era, Vietnamese people have always considered “country” as the common “cradle” All Vietnamese are children of the same family, same ancestor and parents; they have a noble and respectable origin and need to be protected Loving race is expressed by pure thoughts and feelings, originating from the love for family members to those living in the same village, commune and community in Vietnam Patriotism is very evident when the country faces challenges In difficult times, people always help each other to overcome the fierce challenges of the struggles against foreign invaders so as to coexist and develop This philosophy was more deeply expressed in the 15 movements of fighting against foreign invaders to gain national independence, protecting the race and national culture Philosophy of loving race is also reflected in the village conventions and has become standards in the state's laws Thereby, in order to educate the next generation to keep "filial piety", and to deter those who are “disobedient” and unfilial to their parents Loving race is expressed in a tolerant and altruism to misguided people and help them to become better people In Ho Chi Minh's thought, the philosophy for people, love people is deeply crystallized It is a product of Vietnam's history and has become the guiding value for Ho Chi Minh's revolutionary activities and a noble value for the Vietnamese nation in the process of building and defending the Fatherland 3.2.2 Philosophy of loving and respecting the people People who make material possessions and part of spiritual wealth to ensure conditions of the existence of society They are the main force building and defending the country People are not separate from the country In Vietnam, therefore, the ruling class has been very concerned and closed to the people, loved the people, and upholding the role of the masses;
