research Hanoi, September 2022 PART I: INTRODUCTION ABOUT TOPIC As society is rapidly developing, it requires people to constantly learn and keep up with the latest trends in order to not miss out or to be left behind This has put an enormous amount of pressure on our shoulders, which forces us to move forward nonstop However, everyone has their own pace, not all of us can follow up or have the drive to follow up with everything that is going on around the world With that being said, in our presentation today, we will discuss about a kind of environment that is occurring more and more commonly these days in workplaces, schools, universities or even right here in this class PART II: MAIN CONTENT CHAPTER 1: BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON PRESSRURE COOKER ENVIRONMENT 1.1 Definition of pressure cooker environment: A pressure cooker is a sealed chamber that traps the steam generated as its contents are heated As steam builds, pressure increases, water boils and the food inside is cooked The pressure cooker environment works the same way It traps people inside a space or environment that continuously forces them to be “heated up”, physically and mentally As the old saying goes: "The same boiling water hardens the egg but softens the potato", though this environment could help people develop themselves to the fullest, the consequences it brings are undoubtedly lethal As the pressure builds up, the person inside might become more stressed than ever, which in turn badly affects their physical and mental conditions.  A pressure cooker environment can be formed from many factors such as terrible management, pressure, toxic colleagues, tight deadlines, non-stop working, etc While these factors are quite visible to outsiders, the people within will have a hard time noticing, especially if they are convinced that they are doing this for their own sake or for the greater good Follow up our presentation, we will analyze some of the factors that forms a pressure cooker environment and give you some solutions to deal with this 1.2 What problem you might face in reality ( Ranking from 1-10, is you can easily deal with it, 10 is extremely serious, may badly affect your health) The pressure cooker environment is a factor that leads to people becoming stressed, even having mental health problems Tolerating this environment for too long causes major problems such as work and study pressure In order to be able to assess the impact of the pressure cooker environment, I will rate it from to 10 While indicates that you can easily deal with it, 10 indicates that it is extremely serious and may have a negative impact on your health Firstly, the pressure cooker environment forming factor is pressure It looks like in life or in work, study, pressure is always an influencing factor People under stress can feel they are living in a pressure cooker environment and this can induce a regression in their behavior and human interaction They can overreact to situations which in turn can cause the domestic atmosphere to deteriorate This type of behavior can be present as either uncomfortable silences and/or very loud, explosive and noisy verbal exchanges From here I can rate this pressure cooker environment as an 8/10 Because stress is always a serious factor in our lives, it can cause people to suffer from mental disorders or even depression.  Secondly, the factor of tight deadlines is common in every industry, as is the anxiety associated with lack of time Pushing every new task as "urgent" also disrupts busy schedules and puts unrealistic pressure on individuals It makes our work ambiguous and confusing Over time, this constant sense of urgency leads to burnout and disillusionment In addition, it also limits creativity, low spirits From that, I can rate this pressure cooker environment as a 3/10 You can easily deal with it by planning and time management, breaking large tasks into smaller manageable chunks and making sure to attach milestone deadlines to each task Matching sections of the work with milestone deadlines will help you to eventually meet the final deadline right on time Nextly, the pressure cooker environment also includes non-stop working When you work day and night, working non-stop, the body doesn’t have time to rest and regenerate If this situation is prolonged, you will be exhausted, seriously affecting your health and of course, your work quality will not be high Worse, you will experience a stroke, infertility and even life-threatening Therefore, I rate the danger of this pressure cooker environment as 9/10 because it seriously affects human health To be able to withstand this pressure cooker environment, we should plan to rest properly, work scientifically and maintain healthy living habits Finally, the pressure cooker environment is formed due to the Covid-19 pandemic's restrictions Being in this environment emphasizes the pressures on students from changes in exam timetables, and the challenges of turning a home into an office and school as well as the stress surrounding a lack of job security and conflicts with family members because of poor communication, couples whose relationships were pressured prior to the imposition of COVID-19 restrictions are particularly at risk I rate the danger of being in this environment as 7/10 because it affects a lot of things in life, even the spirit To be able to live in this pressure cooker environment, speak from your own feelings, express what is difficult for you and what you feel is needed instead of blaming and criticizing your partner To sum up, even a low-stress job has its stressful times Whether you have high stress or not, there is always some level of stress and you need to know how to deal with it In my view, the higher the level of responsibility, the higher the stress that comes with the assignment, so senior business people all have to work permanently in a pressure cooker environment, I'll find a way to be able to keep be happy, have fun and despite the stressful environment to work in agreement in this environment CHAPTER 2: PROBLEM RELATED TO PRESSURE COOKER ENVIRONMENT 2.1 Pressure: 2.1.1 Definition : The pressure in work or study is the worst mental and physical condition People often have negative feelings such as tiredness and anger whenever they face assignments or tasks 2.1.2 Characteristics: * Pressure can come at any time:    In fact, pressure can come at any time, a person can be pressed by tight deadlines, by the working environment, or by surrounding relationships The length of pressure depends on the serious level of the problem you have    For example:    A student in the “test period” when he/ she has to review and learn lots of knowledge from various subjects in a short time It will create pressure However, it is just a short pressure when it can be relieved after the “test period”    A youth family has to face lots of problems related to money when they just graduate from university, the background is not wealthy, and they not have stable jobs with well-paid salaries It will create pressure However, this kind of pressure can not easily disappear In contrast, this pressure will follow this family for at least or years It is long pressure * Pressure can cause mental and physical problems: Facing pressure can cause problems related to illness Mental problems can be listed as feelings of loneliness, depression, or even negative feelings like suicide Physical problems can be listed as sleeplessness, tiredness, anger, and so on depending on the length of pressure   For example:  In Japan, we have the “karoshi” phenomenon This is used to indicate people who choose suicide as working 18-20 hours per day for long times Some people can easily be seen falling asleep right in public spaces due to stress and being extremely tired In Vietnam recently, we can find a lot of suicide cases, especially in the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic In fact, lots of suicide cases are related to the pressure of studying and family conflict * The pressure sometimes can’t share with other people: Pressure sometimes can’t share with other people, especially the pressure related to private problems This characteristic is often found in Asia when the Asian culture features the ego inside each person Therefore, if they have problems, they will choose to be silent as they can lose their image in the eyes of others For example: A person has been fired and is jobless He or she can feel very pressured but they may not choose to share it with other as they don’t want their friends or acquaintances looks at them with eyes of disdain or compassion * Pressure makes a person take everything seriously Negative thoughts often attack you massively when stressed or make you think more seriously than usual  For example: When you are criticized by your boss, you may think that “the boss hates me” or even “the boss is going to fire me” In fact, these scenarios just pop into your head The higher the work pressure, the more magnified the negative level of thinking 2.1.3 Solutions to cope with pressure: * Exercise Working out regularly is one of the best ways to relax your body and mind Plus, exercise will improve your mood But you have to it often for it to pay off Work up to hours and 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise like brisk walks or 75 minutes of more vigorous exercise like swimming laps, jogging, or other sports Focus on setting fitness goals you can meet so you don’t give up Most of all remember that doing any exercise is better than none at all * Eat Well Eating a regular, well-balanced diet will help you feel better in general It may also help control your moods Your meals should be full of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and lean protein for energy And don’t skip any It’s not good for you and can put you in a bad mood, which can actually increase your stress * Talk about your problems If things are bothering you, talking about them can help lower your stress You can talk to family members, friends, a trusted clergyman, your doctor, or a therapist And you can also talk to yourself It’s called self-talk and we all it But in order for self-talk to help reduce stress, you need to make sure it’s positive and not negative So listen closely to what you’re thinking or saying when you’re stressed out If you’re giving yourself a negative message, change it to a positive one For example, don’t tell yourself “I can’t this.” Tell yourself instead: “I can this,” or “I’m doing the best I can.” * Eliminate Your Triggers Figure out what are the biggest causes of stress in your life Is it your job, your commute, or your schoolwork? If you’re able to identify what they are, see if you’re able to eliminate them from your life, or at least reduce them If you can’t identify the main causes of your stress, try keeping a stress journal Make note of when you become most anxious and see if you can determine a pattern, then find ways to remove or lessen those triggers 2.2 Tight deadlines 2.2.1 Definition A tight deadline is a deadline that must be met but is hard because it does not allow much time to Ex: John working as an editor As you can imagine, some people sent their articles just one day before the close, so John had to edit them at the night, to ensure that the papers are ready for the press on the next day 2.2.2 Characteristics * Unexpectation: Deadlines keep people focused and help them manage their time effectively They also help with quality control Well-planned deadlines give management and teams plenty of time to inspect completed projects for mistakes Meeting deadlines can also be rewarding for employees It gives team members a sense of accomplishment and encourages them to keep up their hard work Usually, the project manager and team can plan the project schedule and identify milestones according to manageable customer deadlines and target dates However, there will inevitably come a time when your team will get a project with a tight deadline It may be because the company has promised a customer a quick delivery without consulting with the team Or you may find that even a carefully planned project suddenly has a deadline that’s hard to meet This could happen because of unexpected complications or changes to team structure Ex: I’m having a plan for meeting the partner company next weekend But my boss suddenly gave me a ring to announce that the time taking place the planned meeting had changed from next weekend into tomorrow Then, he asked me to prepare the document relating to the meeting and send him through e-mail by 10 p.m tonight * Procrastination If you're a bit of a procrastinator, having set deadlines for your work can be a motivation Having tight turnaround times for work can help you get more work out in the same amount of time and higher work quality assurance Ex: The deadline for all members of my team is the end of this month Usually, I start to work by tomorrow’s deadline, so my work results have bad quality and make a lot of mistakes Therefore, I set a deadline for myself 7  days before my team’s deadline and got started doing it in order to avoid procrastination, get more work out in the same amount of time and have more time to check the quality of product 2.2.3 Solutions to cope with tight deadlines: Deadlines can be stressful enough at the best of times, but when they’re tight and there is more than one, they can be incredibly overwhelming Additionally, you’re likely to feel your stress levels rise Thus, here are some tips I suggest to help you cope with those intimidatingly tight deadlines and keep your stress levels in check * Planning and time management are key If you have to work on tight deadlines, planning and time management are key to make it all work Break large tasks into smaller manageable chunks, and make sure to attach milestone deadlines to each task Matching sections of the work with milestone deadlines will help you to eventually meet the final deadline right on time The key to good project management is the insight that if you suspect something might go wrong, be prepared for it and create a plan B If at any stage in the process you foresee delays or obstacles, make contingency plans in advance Now, if these contingency plans involve other people, be sure to keep them in the loop in order to have the best cooperation Secondly, you can use the dead time to work on small tasks The time you spend scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, you can use that time to work on small tasks or plan projects out 10 Finally, don't get bogged down in tiny details When you're on tight deadlines, good enough is often perfectly acceptable Getting lost in the details of each item you're on the hook for is a surefire way to lose valuable time that you can't get back * Concentration is the key to meeting tight deadlines and delivering good work If you’re working under a tight deadline, try to focus on one thing at a time In open space offices it is often difficult to cut out distractions, but one thing you can to make your life easier is put on noise canceling earphones, switch off your phone or at least silence all the non-essential groups and notifications and simply concentrate on the task at hand Today, it is challenging not to get distracted by social media messages of a personal nature or fight the urge to check emails However, these activities bring you little value and simply steal your time, effectively interrupting your thought processes and making you less productive Research by cognitive scientists shows that assignments often take longer to complete because of distractions and that additional time nearly always comes from the effort it takes to refocus after an interruption In addition, our brains are not designed to focus on two tasks at the same time, so multitasking is definitely a bad idea * You should work when you're well-rested and rest when you're tired Working when you're exhausted is less effective and counterproductive When people are mentally tired, they also make more errors and are sloppy Rather than forcing yourself to work through sleepiness or mental fatigue, focus on working hard and smart when you're well-rested and make sure to get the rest you need to operate at peak efficiency * Good psychological preparation is very necessary Firstly, don't allow yourself to dwell on the volume of work you have to Overthinking your workload is a direct path to not getting it done It's also a waste of valuable time that could be spent working 11 Besides, you can consider a change of scenery Finding a new temporary workspace to work might help you find inspiration with the tight and boost your focus and your productivity, so helping you hit your tight deadlines * Let’s get started with tight deadlines Procrastinating on your work is an absolute no-no when you're on tight deadlines Getting going on your work is the best way and only way to get it done on time * You can consider staying up late if needed While it's important to be well-rested, it will sometimes be necessary to pull a late night or two to meet especially tight deadlines When this is the case, you'll simply have to grit your teeth and get through it * If you need help, ask for help Pulling a teammate or coworker to help you meet tight deadlines is acceptable, just be sure you clearly explain why you need their help, what you'd like their help and by when you need the final product Down the line, you'll also want to be sure to repay the favor  All in all, tight deadlines aren’t ideal for teams Your ability to handle tight deadlines and maintain high standards of work will depend on the synergy between emotional, cognitive and administrative skills If you develop time management skills and are able to realistically predict how much time you’ll need for a given task or a series of tasks, you’ll be on your way to getting everything done perfectly on time 2.3 Non-stop work : 2.3.1 Definition Non-stop work is a working method without a stop or pause or without offering relief or respite In short, this is a continuous way of working, and can hardest hit us 2.3.2 Characteristics What's really behind the global rise in working longer and longer hours? It boosts stress levels, and even causes physical pain More and more company rises while the number of laborers is limited Enterprises always want to optimize 12 profitability, so forcing employees to work more and more hours is the way to enrich themselves Actually, there is plenty of evidence that working overtime reduces your productivity, and makes you feel and actually be less healthy It also makes you more likely to develop a whole range of diseases When you work non-stop, the body does not have time to rest and regenerate labor If this situation lasts, you will be exhausted, very seriously affecting your health and of course, then the quality of your work will not be high When you have to regularly deal with the "mountain" of work, your brain is always under pressure and stress Not only that, overwork, too great work pressure is also one of the reasons why more and more young people have a stroke, which is extremely dangerous and even life-threatening Also, non-stop work make you have no time to take care of family and self Currently, over 400 million employed persons worldwide work 49 or more hours per week  In a recent interview with The New York Times, even entrepreneur Elon Musk felt moved to describe his 47th birthday spent locked in his factory, pulling an allnighter “No friends, nothing,” he said It might have been just another day in another 120-hour work week “This has really come at the expense of seeing my kids And seeing friends,” he added Frankly, to gain something we want, we also have to pay for a lot of things like family time and even our own health It is supposed that: an overworked person is tired and; hence more likely to have an accident at work A study in the US found that “working in jobs with overtime schedules will rise 61% higher injury hazard rate compared to jobs without overtime” For instance, if you woke at a.m and were still working until a.m the next day (that is if you had been up for 17 hours straight), your physical performance would likely be worse than if you had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05% This is the level that an average 73 kg male would get if he had drunk two 355ml cans of beer That’s right, you’re drunk on overtime So, an all-nighter will make your physical performance as impaired as if you were too drunk to drive 2.3.3 Solutions to cope with non- stop work: 13 Working constantly isn’t a wise choice but it is killing your health and success So I personally bring out some solutions * Balance between working time and resting time This is the most effective preparation for you before and after overtime like sleeping on time, don’t stay up late to work Rest is a time for your thoughts and autonomic nervous system Rest is a quiet time for your brain, a couple of minutes of silence Time, when your thoughts stop for a second and you breathe deep and By letting your brain rest you, will become more creative and patient * Take care of yourself as much as possible No matter how much you work, always take care of yourself Yourself is the most important thing Always pay attention to your health, eat in moderation, and reward yourself with entertainment after stressful working hours such as, meeting friends, and relatives or going on a trip * Try to work quickly, and effectively instead In a continuous work environment, you will be given a lot of tasks at the same time, from one task to another So, instead of working in a slow, vague way, make yourself exhausted, let optimize your brain, and work fast, and effective, to finish the task as soon as possible * Present your ideas on this issue to be resolved by your superiors In the workplace, we have the right to present our ideas to superiors if we can’t suffer from these conditions The superiors must take responsibility to resolve the problem of their staff Even if, the superiors don’t resolve, we should find another company, with more responsibility and more remuneration We just devote ourselves to a company that respects the right and the health of staff 14 PART III: CONCLUSION Inconclusion, whether you're a manager, an employee, you may find yourself struggling to survive in a pressure environment Maybe you experience unreasonable deadlines, pressure and non-stop work or lack of growth potential, or all the above While a little bit of stress can help you your best work, too much can put you over the edge It’s normal to feel temporary pressure, like when there’s a looming deadline But when the stress at work becomes severe and consistent, serious physical and emotional symptoms can develop That’s why it’s important to develop techniques that will help you to not only survive but also thrive in a high-pressure work environment Some of solutions that I want to summazise are: * Manage your to-do list and the important things first To get started, creating a document or invest in a weekly planner to keep track of your tasks and responsibilities This will help you stay organized, as well as help keep track of what needs to be done and allow a bigger sense of accomplishment at the end of each working day Moreover, taking a step back and assess the level of priority for each task After writing out your to-do list, you could assign each one such as ‘urgent’, ‘important’ and ‘maintenance’ Based on this, you can then decide how to proceed with the day ahead and ensure that the most paramount assignments are completed first * Learn to say no so that you don’t generate more work for yourself It is nice to be asked to things, it makes us feel useful and important However, if you gain a reputation for being helpful, you quickly become the go-to person in the office, and it’s difficult to pull back your time If you’re feeling swamped, learn to say no, people will respect you for that Besides, you can also avoid tasks taking longer than they need to by looking for the most simple, time-efficient solution This will ensure that you are not consistently dedicating your time to unnecessary tasks, freeing you up to concentrate on what is actually important * Slow down and take your breaks If your work schedule is prioritised effectively, you should not feel like you need to rush tasks in order to move on to the next project Working too quickly could, in the 15 long run, generate more work as a result of making mistakes that could have been avoided with a little more attention to detail Taking a steady pace and ensuring you have time to check over your work before finalising it is highly recommended In addition, you will inevitably achieve more when you are feeling fresh – working through your breaks won’t achieve anything other than making you feel more fatigued Therefore, be sure to take some time away from your desk during the day to eat your lunch and relax You could go out for a walk, listen to some music or read a favourite book during your free time if you want to stay occupied However, in reality, people can completely take the initiative in any environment, no matter how much or little pressure A pressurized environment also has benefits besides the disadvantages mentioned above, such as helping employees realize their own strengths and weaknesses, improving their ability to withstand pressure, learning a lot from colleagues, and so on Do not rush to assume that the competitive environment is not good In fact, the more people are in such a harsh working environment, the better they will learn That’s all about things Group want to mention in topic: “The pressure-cooker environment and solutions to cope with pressure, tight deadlines, and non-stop work” Thanks to this discussion, we can answer the question: “what are the reasons of pressure-cooker environment?” and “what can we to get over that environment?” Group believe that this topic is one of the most valuable knowdledge for you in your future work because every job has its own pressure and what you need to is adapt and arrange your life properly to be able to survive in that environment 16 ...
