Freedom - Happiness REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON MASTER THESIS Major: TESOL M.A Candidate: Hoàng Phương Tiểu Anh ClassMTESOL017A Thesis Topic: Exploring the relationship between high school EFL students' level of extraversion and their preferences for oral corrective feedback Examiner: Dr Tran Quoc Thao Examiner’s affiliation: Faculty of English Language, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology COMMENTS This thesis contains all necessary components of an MA thesis The content in each chapter is appropriately presented The language use in different parts is still not well expressed, which can cause ambiguity Abstract The abstract contains the necessary information The research objectives should be presented in three points: (1) high school students’ preferences for oral corrective feedback, (2) students’ level of extraversion, (3) and the relationship between students’ preferences for oral corrective feedback and their level of extraversion The results for the level of extraversion should be included There should be keywords at the end of the abstract Chapter Introduction This chapter has addressed all the issues in the introductory chapter The research niche has been appropriately presented, to some extent It has pointed out perspectives of the English teaching and learning in Vietnam in general and at the research context in specific The research aims and research questions are appropriately presented “…as most students have not been given sufficient lessons on communication skills and they not have many opportunities to use English for communicative purposes” (p.1) Q: if in this case, how was it possible for students to give opinions on their preferences for oral corrective feedback? The scope of the study should highlight the delimitations of the research focus, research design, research participants and instruments It should avoid giving definitions More practical contributions of the study should be added There should be a section of Definitions of key terms which can help readers to understand those key terms Chapter Literature review This chapter has reviewed relevant theories which can be used as the theoretical framework However, such reviewed theories should be discussed in relation to the scope of this study, e.g., many definitions of concepts have been discussed, but they are not defined for the purpose of this study More justification of the Five factor model (McCrae & John, 1992) should be added As the level of extraversion is researched, this model consists of five domains (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience), and extraversion is one of those domains More theories on the correlation between extraversion and oral corrective feedback should be added There should be more previous studies conducted in the context of Vietnam Chapter Research methodology This chapter consists of all necessary components regarding research methodology The research design was appropriately employed, and the research context and the teaching and learning at the research context are also appropriately presented There should be more justifications on the choice of research design There should be more description of the teaching and learning of speaking skills at the research context “The Grammar-Translation method is therefore the primary method for delivering English lessons” (p.31) Q: Can you explain how this method is used in the English language teaching at the research context? The sample method is convenience sampling, but “There were reasons for choosing Grade 10 students as the participants” (p.31) This should be reconsidered S3.2.2.1 Questionnaire participants: “Grade 10 students were more willing and eager to participate in different communicative activities than the other higher grades” (p.31) Q: How could you know this? There should be more research participants’ background information Such information can be very useful for later discussion of the findings, and it can help to differentiate this study with other ones As the Five factor model was used for the 1st questionnaire, there should be a description of items in each domain Besides the given questions in the interview protocol, did you ask other questions? The validity and reliability of the qualitative data analysis should be addressed Q: How did you make sure that your qualitative data analysis was valid and reliable? Chapter Results and discussion This chapter has presented the results and discussion in addressing the research questions There should be interpretations of the meaning of numbers rather than the raw findings There should be more extracts from the interviews “Accordingly, the first group of participants with scores ranging from 26 to 38 is labeled “introverted”; the second group with cores ranging from 39 to 51 is labeled “somewhat introverted”; the third group with scores ranging from 52 to 64 is labeled “average”; the fourth group with scores ranging from 65 to 77 is labeled “somewhat extraverted” and the fifth group with scores ranging from 78 to 90 is labeled “extraverted”” (p.56) Q: What are the criteria for this interpretation? Chapter Conclusion The information in this chapter is, to some extent, acceptable There should a sample of interview transcript and qualitative data analysis The thesis should be well proofread Many references (e.g., 1970s, 1980s) should be updated The list of references should be double-checked in terms of APA HCMC, 28 October, 2021 Examiner’s signature Dr Tran Quoc Thao Ho Chi Minh City Open University School of Graduate Studies Socialist Republic of Vietnam Independence - Freedom - Happiness REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON MASTER THESIS Major: TESOL M.A Candidate: Hoàng Phương Tiểu Anh Class MTESOL017A Thesis Topic: Exploring the relationship between high school EFL students' level of extraversion and their preferences for oral corrective feedback M.A Candidate’s supervisor: Dr Nguyễn Thị Thanh Hà Thesis paper’s reviewer: Dr Nguyễn Đình Thu DETAILS I THESIS REVIEWER’S COMMENTS: In terms of the urgency, scientific and practical contributions of the thesis Good giving Oral Corrective Feedback (OCF) is a practice of interaction manifesting metacognitive learning strategies for language learners As such, this topic of research, to certain extent, makes some contributions to teaching and learning English in Vietnam Interaction brings fresh air to the language classes and of course it can meet the requirements of MOET and NFL 2020 In terms of validity, reliability and feasibility of the thesis Validity is not solid as revealed in the questionnaire responses as appeared in Tables 4.2; 4.3; 4.4; and 4.5 The NEO-PI-R questionnaire to measure ones’ personality (McCrae & John, 1992) was seriously criticized for its construct validity It is also criticized that this questionnaire used Five Factor Model of personality and that this scale gained its popularity thanks to the McCrae & John’s influence in the psychological circle and was blamed of lack of solid theoretical support Strengths and limitations of thesis regarding content, organization and format 3.1 Strengths The organization and format of the thesis can properly meet the requirements prescribed by OU’s Office of Graduate Studies, with chapters, endorsed by Tables and Figures to increase readability 3.2 Limitations Critique of NEO-PI-R was imperative as sources for the original was available, not inaccessible as the researcher mentioned! Missing empirical studies in the Vietnamese context failed to form the substantial gap for this thesis! Lack justification why Spearman was chosen instead of Pearson correlation coefficient As OCF is heavily conditioned by pschological factor, whether or not those in the investigation were affected and this factor influenced the result This needed clarification II THESIS REVIEWER’S QUESTIONS (optional) Are students’ and teachers’ beliefs aligned to their attitudes towards OCFs? If not, why? III CONCLUSION (Please briefly state the completion degree of requirements of a M.A thesis, and confirm whether the thesis should be presented or not) Revised as recommended: Critical review of NEO-PI-R questionnaire scale on extraversion; Explain the choice of Spearman correlation; Elaborate in details the results from Tables 4.2; 4.3; 4.4; and 4.5 Proof reading and thoroughly check in-text and end-of-text citations ………………………………………………………………………………………… Ho Chi Minh City, 28/10/2021 THESIS REVIEWER (Signature and Full name) Dr Nguyễn Đình Thu ... investigating In the classroom, teachers, as the dominant feedback providers, have their own beliefs and intentions for the practice of oral corrective feedback and learners, in the meantime, have their. .. preferences for oral corrective feedback and the relationship between extraversion and these preferences Moreover, learners’ preferences are examined in all five main aspects of oral corrective feedback. .. Dinh High School? ??s Grade 10 students in the study had an average level of extraversion In terms of their preferences for oral corrective feedback, it was revealed that the majority of participants
