LP WWW.LEW-PORT.COM Graduation Issue Class of 2021 Congratulations Class of 2021 The Lewiston-Porter Central School District, the Board of Education and the staff and students join in wishing our 2021 graduating class a happy and productive life and much success in the future Congratulations from a proud school community! Puzzles in Honor of Lyla This spring, students in Mrs Khatib’s class created a 100 piece “we all fit together” puzzle to honor and celebrate their classmate and friend Lyla Dolly, who was born with Down Syndrome All proceeds from puzzle sales were donated to Down Syndrome research In addition, students also created a four minute video about Lyla and what an amazing person she is Mrs Khatib commented, “Celebrating our differences means understanding that each individual is unique It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual The benefits of tolerance are clear to see By embracing our diversity we can learn more about our world and ourselves In turn, this enables us to grow and thrive intellectually and emotionally The doors to a multitude of opportunities can also be opened, with new friendships, new ideas, and new experiences.” Message from the Superintendent Mr Paul J Casseri Well we made it! The 2020-21 school year is officially in the books I think we are all ready to move on from this incredibly difficult year I want to thank the entire school community for the ongoing support over the course of this school year; a school year unlike any other It has not been easy for sure From the establishment of basically schools in September (the Hybrid Learning school), and our Remote Learning school to our ability to have all students that wished to attend back on campus full-time in April/May 2021, each day brought its unique challenges We learned about quarantine, how to teach through Zoom and Google classroom and everything in between It was not perfect and certainly there is no option that can surpass all students on campus everyday working directly face to face with their teachers Overall however, I believe we did the best we could We followed the guidance, we kept our school community safe, and ultimately, we were able to return to full instruction We appreciate the ongoing communication and feedback with our full stakeholder community Thank you for your support I especially offer my thanks and congratulations to the Class of 2021 A student's Junior and Senior year are always very special times The Class of 2021 had both years greatly disrupted I am so sorry that, after all these students have been through, they had their graduation ceremony disrupted by the rain, but in typical fashion this Class of 2021 handled it with grace, class and great sense of humor We made it … together Best of luck to you all While we have not received official guidance yet from the New York State Department of Education, I am very hopeful that the 202122 school year will see a return to a more “normal” approach to school We certainly ended in a better spot and with the data looking better every day, I would like to say that the 2021-22 K-12 school experience should reopen to a more traditional approach We look forward to having ALL students back on Tuesday, September 7th, 2021 The Lew-Port Link Newsletter Class of 2021 - The Lew-Port Link Newsletter Musical Notes and Happenings The Music Department closed the year with some outstanding performances in May and June All of the music students and teachers were excited and grateful for the opportunity to perform music for parents, friends, and the community Over the course of the year, the Music Department increased their presence on social media by posting short videos and updates on their Twitter feed (@LewPortMusic) and on the district YouTube channel Because of the pandemic, social media proved to be the best way to showcase student work and performances We hope the community has an opportunity to view the LPMS and LPHS Virtual Musical Showcase! It was presented for friends and families on May 19th at the Transit Drive-In, on a beautiful night, with over one hundred cars in attendance The cast recorded their pop and Broadway numbers on the High School stage with a professional sound engineer and videographer It was then edited together to create our Virtual Musical It felt great to showcase the fantastic talent of our Lew-Port Theatre students! The production can still be viewed on the Lewiston-Porter YouTube page One of the most significant challenges the department faced was spacing students 12 feet apart while singing or playing band instruments This impacted all band rehearsals, choir rehearsals, and general music classes In many instances, curriculum and schedules had to be significantly modified to accommodate social distancing Nonetheless, music teachers at the PEC, IEC, MS and HS created exciting and engaging online opportunities for elementary students to keep everyone involved and learning Instrumental and vocal teachers taught lessons over Zoom, reimagined what rehearsals look like, and had the opportunity to introduce new repertoire Unfortunately, the pandemic forced us to cancel major department events, such as All-County, All-State, field trips, Darien Lake, nursing home visits, and holiday caroling Also cancelled were the musical productions at the IEC, MS, and HS and most of our regular in-person concerts Now, however, it looks like we see the light at the end of the tunnel, and the entire department is eagerly awaiting next school year We look forward to building the Music Program back up again! As things stabilize, we invite students who have dropped band, orchestra, or choir, over the past few years or during the pandemic to consider returning and making music with us again! The Music Program is about creating community and family through music, and we encourage all students to become a part of it Thank you to all of our students, families, and friends for supporting our Music Program through this challenging year Students Honored with Scholastic Achievement The Erie-Niagara Scholastic Achievement Recognition Dinner (SARD) was recently held at Lockport High School, where Lew-Port’s top three students Justin Pavan, Justin Currie, and Jessi Avila-Shah were honored The annual awards dinner is a tradition that’s now in its 41st year SARD was developed in 1981 through a school-business partnership Its purpose is to spotlight outstanding students and promote the importance of academic proficiency to our communities Webster Szanyi LLP was one of the sponsors of the event The Lew-Port Link Newsletter Pictured ( l to r) Superintendent, Mr Casseri, Students: Justin Pavan, Justin Currie, Jessi AvilaShah, HS Principal, Mr Rowles, and Webster Szanyi LLP sponsor, Mrs McClaren Middle School Students Raise Alzheimer’s Awareness Charlie Dieteman’s Cerebral Palsy Fundraiser Raises Awareness and Funds for Cause Charlie Dieteman was thrilled that his senior year at Niagara Career and Technical Education Center (NCTEC) and Lewiston-Porter High School is ending on a high note with his annual cerebral palsy fundraiser He sold green rubber bracelets for a dollar for an organization known as Empower Empower is a premier service provider in Western New York that offers diverse programming and individualized care and support to make people’s lives better Green represents Cerebral Palsy awareness Charlie has cerebral palsy and his mission for years has been to inspire and help others just like him who live with disabilities “I don’t let it hold me back from what I want to in life and I want other kids to the same thing,” he says His Conservation teacher at Orleans/Niagara BOCES, Paul Dewey, says Charlie is an amazing student and person “On a scale from to 10, Charlie is a 10 He is a natural leader and extremely charismatic He has no limitations and doesn’t let anything slow him down He is a joy to have in class You can have the worst day and he will just lift you right up I jokingly told him I am failing him so I can keep him another year Just an amazing young man.” Pictured (l to r) Skylar and Kiersten Elliott Kiersten and Skylar Elliott presented the idea of raising awareness for Alzheimer's at one of the recent Builders Club meetings Their grandfather is a patient at Our Lady of Peace, and this cause is near and dear to their hearts The girls chaired the volunteer experience, which included making Pictures for Patients and selling Pots of Candy during lunches They were able to collect and share a large selection of creative, beautiful artwork for patients to enjoy "Skylar and I wanted to make pictures to brighten an Alzheimer patient's day," said Kiersten Elliott "We hope that the money our school raised will help future Alzheimer's research to better understand Alzheimer's and possibly find a cure as well as help the patients who currently have the disease, like my grandfather." The girls purchased the remaining candy pots to hand out at a local nursing home Altogether this volunteer activity raised $300 for the Alzheimer's Association in Buffalo Mrs Tina Oddy, Builders Club Advisor said, "I am so proud of the girls and the effort they put into organizing, coordinating, and executing this successful awareness campaign and fundraiser.” 10 Charlie has been honored with the following awards for his efforts: 2019 NYS Senate Commendation Award, President’s Gold Award for Volunteer Service (2018); Empower’s Junior Leading Luminary Award (2016) and Cerebral Palsy Associations of New York’s Charles Koenig Award (2017) Charlie is also a member of the SkillsUSA Leadership team and is a chapter officer at NCTEC SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce SkillsUSA helps each student to excel by empowering them to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens His SkillsUSA advisor, Julie Roloff, says when he approached her and the team about selling the bracelets to raise money for his cause it was a no brainer “We thought it was a great idea and we wanted to this for him, so we have started the campaign for the month of March since that is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month March 25th is Cerebral Palsy Day and students here wore green to promote Charlie’s cause He raised $636.” “This is my last fundraiser as a high school senior and I was thrilled,” says Charlie “I like to think of myself as approachable I am open to answering questions from my classmates and community members about cerebral palsy and show people it is okay to talk about my disability It’s very important to me to help others.” There is no doubt that Charlie, with his determination and philanthropic nature, will continue his efforts at Niagara University this fall where he will be in the Academic Exploration Program Best of luck Charlie with your fundraiser and future endeavors! IEC Students Create Living Museum Students in Mrs Boss's class at the Intermediate Education Center, created paper bag people to represent the people they researched for their biography projects If you look closely, you may see Albert Einstien, Bessie Coleman, Sacagawea, Henry Ford, and more! The students had fun creating these projects, as well as writing and memorizing speeches about their famous people, which they presented through a virtual "Living Museum" The Lew-Port Link Newsletter Butterflies are Released by Second Graders at Ceremony It was a perfect sunny day, when second grade and multiage students at the PEC celebrated moving up to the IEC next school year Using the analogy of the students being like caterpillars, breaking through a chrysalis, each of the students received an envelope and on the countdown released butterflies into the air in front of the school The students were thrilled when watching the butterflies fly around them and in some cases even land on them to visit for awhile “Today marks a milestone as we celebrate the completion of your primary years,” said PEC Principal, Tamara Larson as she addressed the students and their families “It has truly been an honor for our entire Primary Team, to watch each one of you discover your world during your learning journey over the last four years Today is a day to thank all of your teachers for helping you grow your wings,” she added "We celebrate life with the release of butterflies The animals you have been given will emerge from their envelopes and alight on your hand for a moment before flying off You are ready to spread Pictured is Claire Carroll your wings and fly!” holding a butterfly Lancer Sports Accomplishments The Lewiston-Porter Athletic Department has seen many success stories over the past five years and this school year was no different Below are some of our individual and team accomplishments we have experienced during this 2020-2021 school year The future is bright in Lancer Nation!
