Teacher: Pham Thanh Chau SUGGESTED GAMES AND ACTIVITIES FOR TEACHING ENGLISH AT THE VIETNAMESE PRIMARY/ SECONDARY SCHOOLS Dear teachers, Hopefully you teachers will be happy and interesting in teaching children in Vietnam, especially, in Hanoi! These are some suggested games and activities we have collected and studied from our colleagues, our friends, newspapers, and on the internet and experiences during our teaching time These classroom games and activities are suggested only Thus, you teachers should have your own new creations on your lesson teaching which are suitable for your each lesson If you can, please share with us some of your new games so that we can introduce them to the new comers Thank you for your attention and giving ideas in order to correct and to better as well as to renew this document! I’m going to say the word and I want you to tell me what it is Are you ready?’  Whisper and show T’s lips to Ss Ss guess and say the words  ‘No’ or ‘yes’ (If ‘yes’, point to the picture and let Ss in the class repeat times.) Flashcard groups  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: flashcards  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: or minutes, it’s up to the numbers of flashcards  PROCEDURE:  use flashcards to play an action game  Ss work in groups of and have one flashcard (for each) That flashcard is that group name  Let Ss stand up and repeat their group names  Give the Ss instructions in the following way: Ex: apples, stand up; ant, raise you hands SUGGESTED GAMES & ACTIVITIES Teacher: Pham Thanh Chau Slap the board  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: flashcards, board  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the numbers of flashcards  PROCEDURE:  Suggested  Explain the game (TA helps T explain to Ss into Vnese and works with T to make an example.)  Stick the flashcards on the board, call 4Ss from team go to the board and face to Ss  Show the flaschcard to Ss Ss say the words4Ss turn around and run to the board and slap to the picture they hear Who slap first is the winner and get  for their team  Suggested  You put the vocabulary items on the board in any order - jumbled and sometimes a little bit higher than the tallest kid can reach, so that they'll have to jump  Form groups Give a mother tongue translation for one of the words on the board The students have got to recognize the word which translates to that word They then run to the board and slap the correct word The first person in each group to slap the right word gets a point  Alternatively, you can form teams and one person from the team runs to the board, as a representative The first team to hit the correct word gets the point The representative changes, ready for the next word… This is a little calmer than if everyone is running to the board  You can reverse the translation, by putting the mother tongue on the board And of course, you could use definitions or opposites if you want to avoid using the mother tongue  You can it with pictures so you put the pictures on the board and call out the English word and the kids slap the picture  The teacher doesn't have to call out the English, you can get other kids to call out so they're getting practice speaking too SUGGESTED GAMES & ACTIVITIES Teacher: Pham Thanh Chau Cowboy game  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: flashcards  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the numbers of flashcards  PROCEDURE:  Explain the game (TA helps T explain to Ss into Vietnamese and works with T to make an example.)  T has a flashcard, TA has, too T&TA stand back-to-back  T says 1, both Ts go forward 1step  2, go one step again  3, both Ts turn around and say the picture of the opposite Who say first will win and have   Call 2Ss from two diferrent teams to take part in game for each turn Simon says  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: none  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: Ss from or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: or minutes, it’s up Ss’ health, or the time allowed  PROCEDURE:  The children gather around an adult who gives instructions to them, preceded by "Simon Says" For example:  "Simon says touch your head"  "Simon says dance around the room"  The children follow the instructions unless the adult leaves out the "Simon says", in which case anybody following instructions is out SUGGESTED GAMES & ACTIVITIES Teacher: Pham Thanh Chau Hangman      GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade AIDS: none QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: Ss from or or teams, depend on class size and their position TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the time allowed PROCEDURE:  Think of a word Write down a horizontal line for each letter, and draw the scaffold  Have your child guess a letter If the letter he guesses is in the word, write the letter down on the corresponding line If the letter is not in the word, draw a body part on the hangman  Continue until the word is guessed or the hangman is complete! The object of the game is to guess the word, but have some fun with the hangman Draw silly body parts or clothes on him sometimes, especially if the word is difficult You don't want to put too much emphasis on winning or losing Bingo Often use for revising or consolidating lessons  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: pieces of paper  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: Ss from or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the time allowed  PROCEDURE:  Let Ss draw lines down and lines across to make squares (grade 3) and the same but lines to make 16 squares for grade and  Let Ss write the words given on the board on their blank, note Ss that it’s not necessary in order like T’s given words  After finishing, T reads the words  Ss tick, or circle, or triangle…(these symbols are used for each Bingo turn, not erase or replace another bingo card.)  When Ss get a complete row horizontal, diagonal or vertical, they shout ‘Bingo’ and the first S shout bingo is the winner and get point SUGGESTED GAMES & ACTIVITIES Teacher: Pham Thanh Chau Whisper This classic game work for all levels of student This game really tests listening and speaking skills and encourages teamwork  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: none  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: Ss from or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the time allowed  PROCEDURE:  Get the Ss to form a line  The T whispers a short sentence, a phrase, or a work into S’s ear  Get the S to pass the whisper to person next to him/ her  It should continue down the line until the last student  The last S should speak the initial sentence, or phrase/ or a word out loud or write on the board SUGGESTED GAMES & ACTIVITIES Teacher: Pham Thanh Chau Back to the board This game is good way for Ss to understand and consolidate new vocabulary This game engages Ss and activates them into using their wider vocabulary to describe key words  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: none  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: Ss from or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the time allowed  PROCEDURE:  Call up student from each team go to the board  One person from each team must sit on a chair with their back to the board  You, the teacher, write a word on the board The players on chairs cannot see this word but the rests of the team can  Teams must try and describe the word on the board to the person from their team without using the actual word  The 1st team to guess the word gets point and then you switch the person on the chair so that everyone gets a go at guessing The same game for grade but Ss in grade just actions, not describe by words SUGGESTED GAMES & ACTIVITIES 10 Teacher: Pham Thanh Chau Pictionary race This is a great team game  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: none  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: Ss from or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the time allowed  PROCEDURE:  Draw or lines on the board to divide into or columns fit to 3/ teams Then write their team names on the top of those columns  Have each team nominate someone to come up to the board  The teacher should give each S a word of similar difficulty  On the T’s command, the Ss should start to draw a word on their half of the board  The rest of the team members must shout out the word they think is being drawn  The 1st team to guess correctly wins a point  Pick 3/ more Ss to come forward to draw SUGGESTED GAMES & ACTIVITIES 11 Teacher: Pham Thanh Chau USING BALLS Rubber ball  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: rubber ball  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: Ss from or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the time allowed  PROCEDURE:  Teacher use a rubber ball to engage or call the Ss up to make a conversation or call them to answer the questions, or to ask and answer with the structures together Target game This game is used to revise/ practice or consolidate the lesson  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: sticky ball  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: Ss from or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the time allowed  PROCEDURE:  Teacher draw a target on the board It’s up to grade the Ss are in and the aims of the lesson you want to draw  Let Ss throw the sticky ball to the target and they have to follow the questions on the target  These are kinds of targets: ?  -2 ?   -2: lose 2 : that team sing a song, get 2 ?: answer a question, get  3: get 3 lucky -2 -2: lose 2 : that team sing a song, get +2 2 ?: answer a question, get   +2: get 2 lucky : that team lose 1 Gun: take 1 out from team you choose : present a team you choose 1 SUGGESTED GAMES & ACTIVITIES 12 Teacher: Pham Thanh Chau USING DICE Target game This game is used to revise/ practice or consolidate the lesson  GRADE LEVEL: grade to grade  AIDS: sticky ball  QUANTITY OF STUDENTS: Ss from or or teams, depend on class size and their position  TIME ALLOWED: minutes, more or less time, it’s up to the time allowed  PROCEDURE:  Teacher give a target to the Ss on the board It’s up to grade the Ss are in and the aims of the lesson you want to draw  Let Ss throw the sticky ball to the target and they have to follow the questions on the target  This is an example target: = : that team sing a song, get 2 = ?
