has changed due to developments in technology, which involves the use of the Internet This paper presents EFL teachers‟ perceptions and practices of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching (IALT) at high schools in Quy Nhon City This study adopted a mixed-method approach because the blend between the quantitative and qualitative research approaches enables induction A total of 100 teachers participated in a survey and responded to the questions about what they think about the term IALT, what pros and cons of IALT and how they use the Internet The findings of the study suggest that teachers have positi ve perceptions in applying the Internet in classes and there are two key factors (contextual and internal components) affecting the use of the Internet in the classroom Some external elements are a lack of time, bad Internet connection and inadequate computer assistance, yet several internal challenges are limited computer skills, computer knowledge, and enthusiasm in IALT among teachers and students In-service teacher training courses for IALT are strongly recommended to further develop and implement IALT Keyword: Internet-Assisted Language Teaching (IALT) iv T: I reckon that Internet-Assisted Language Teaching is the new trend in language teaching today It appears that the internet can also improve class community and camaraderie by facilitating communication outside of the classroom In this case, class websites or blogs can give students the ability to download assignments and materials, talk with other students, and share their work I: How often you use the Internet in your foreign language teaching? T: Personally, I usually make use of the Internet for my teaching both before and during my lessons by providing the students with extra study material and resources such as interactive lessons, educational quizzes as well as tutorials With regard to my experience, selecting internet resources is based on the materials of that day For example, the material is about songs so I will use YouTube for the listening section and then give an assignment for the students I will ask them to upload their video on YouTube And of course, the internet resources which are easy to use and don't cost money to use It seems to me that I often use the Internet in classes For example, I could freely download some model essays as the samples for my teaching writing in class as well as some websites to check the errors of grammar in my student‟s essay As you can guess, with a lot of good ideas searched on the Internet and the Automated Grammar Checker Tools, both my students and I could save time to find the ideas and corrections Besides, I was motivated to use social media like Facebook and some forums for teaching English as a means to exchange the teaching experiences, and I noticed they were providing online peer evaluation through Facebook comments, both from instructors and other students, in an innovative method I: What are the benefits of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my view, using the Internet in class could benefit teachers a lot for their teaching Particularly, the Internet offers a vast amount of information for teachers and students The Internet is a confederation of thousands of computers from various sectors of society such as education, business, government, etc So, we can find a whole lot of information about anything, including about education, on the web As you can see, teachers and students can find authentic materials and resources for the language teaching learning activities on the web Finally, Using multimedia materials, computers display written texts and use sounds, still pictures, and videos So, Students feel that things are more real and more easily understood I: What are the challenges of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my view, there have been several problems as a teacher when using the Internet in class that it's a devil of a job even getting a class into our computer lab at the moment Besides, time constraints both are preparation (for the teacher) and then lab use really restricts this kind of activity for my students No matter how simple computers and the internet are, students need to learn a lot in order to use them properly Last but not least, Internet resources have limitations regarding their memory, speed, methods of input and output, etc Internet resources for language acquisition are still imperfect Some problems of projects connected with the Internet or the disallowance of using smartphones in classes are generally encountered when I teach English assisted by the Internet In my opinion, the primary problem that most EFL teachers like me face regarding the use of technology, especially the Internet in classes, is that I have not taken part in much professional training on how to integrate technology in my classes I: How you evaluate yourself in using the Internet in your teaching? T: Actually, my use of the computer in the classroom can be seen as not good I am not confident in my ability to use the Internet I find it difficult to learn how to design the online exercises on the Internet to transform learning languages from a traditional passive exercise to an interactive experience of discovery and exploration As you can guess, I must learn how to that on Youtube as well as from my colleagues Sample Interview 7: I: How you understand the term “Internet-Assisted Language Teaching”? T: From my point of view, this phrase refers to the Access to the Internet is fundamental to achieving this vision for the future Also, it can improve the quality of education in many ways In addition, I believe that it opens doorways to a wealth of information, knowledge and educational resources, increasing opportunities for learning in and beyond the classroom Teachers use online materials to prepare lessons, and students to extend their range of learning I: How often you use the Internet in your foreign language teaching? T: It appears to me that I usually use the Internet to prepare and to teach my lessons I have noticed that more and more students are more confident and competent with using computers these days though I know my school realizes that we have to increase computer numbers and continue to upgrade etc Through teacher- made Web activities (e.g., quizzes, gap-fill exercises, drop-down questions, crosswords, jumbled-sentence exercises, jumbled-word exercises, ordering exercises, matching exercises), I think that teachers can also provide students with language exercises directly related to their classroom lessons in line with the evolving syllabus of their language courses I: What are the benefits of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my view, I agree that the use of the Internet could be an effective way of teaching EFL because the Internet provides students with a rich learning environment where they can find authentic resources for learning the English language What I am mentioning is that by incorporating language games such as crosswords and quizzes, students can practice and test practical skills with fun as an extension of learning activities Therefore, I suppose that To develop learners‟ critical thinking and communicative competence, we have to equip them with as much as authentic language use and cross- cultural knowledge This will be more effective when EFL learners are given a daily exposure to authentic materials, and the most effective way is through social media networks I: What are the challenges of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my view, they seem to have difficulties in using the Internet in the classroom Contextual reasons for not using the Internet include limited computer facilities, limited class hours, inappropriate class size and limited technical support You know, unexpected Internet disconnections can also be a problem If the Internet is disconnected in the classroom without any notice, the class may be disorganized unless the classroom teacher has backup lesson plans Like the previous point, I think teachers also need to pay extra attention to students when they often have more than 40 students accessing the Internet in a classroom because there is not enough time to look up the online dictionaries practice to check pronunciation of each word in classes actually there is not enough time to look up the online dictionaries practice to check the pronunciation of each word in classes actually To the best of my knowledge, I strongly believe that integrating English practices into EFL learners‟ daily life can massively improve their English skills EFL teachers must recognize this as a challenge as well as an opportunity I: How you evaluate yourself in using the Internet in your teaching? T: To be honest, I‟m not very proud of my use of computers for language learning to date Prior to commencing my studies at university, I taught myself how to make a web- site and developed one to use with my courses But studies have kept me from updating it and developing the features that I really was hoping to include, such as interactive games and study activities As I mentioned before, I downloaded Hot Potatoes software last year and tried to some exercises, but didn‟t have time to finish any yet Consequently, my site is the worst of the worst, primarily posting some tips and class notes for students with very little interactivity Sample Interview 8: I: How you understand the term “Internet-Assisted Language Teaching”? T: Personally, Internet-Assisted Language Teaching is a term focusing on the fact that implementing Internet-based language teaching can be best enhanced if it is accompanied with an awareness of the attitudes of EFL learners toward it, To the best of my knowledge, I strongly believe that integrating English practices in EFL learners‟ daily life can massively improve their English skills EFL teachers must recognize this as a challenge as well as opportunity I: How often you use the Internet in your foreign language teaching? T: Personally, I usually make use of the Internet for my teaching both before and during my lessons apart from the development in vocabulary learning and listening comprehension, teachers reported gains in the pronunciation and intonation of formulaic speech and phrases and words which appeared in the stories, games and songs In addition, even though young learners were not expected to read at this stage, they, as their teachers stated, had started to perceive the differences between the sound and spelling of some of the lexis in the materials In fact, most of these materials include both oral input and written text Thus, learners were beginning to read individual words associating graphics to phonics I: What are the benefits of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my view, Internet use could help teachers a lot to lead their students to gain more easily input in the language learning process Secondly,this form of communication could provide more equality of opportunity for self- expression and indeed more chances to interact in the written form This increases confidence to experiment in the second language Furthermore, it is the greatest source of information not in book form; can be used as an encyclopedia and can have real worth in promoting higher thinking skills You know, students focus less on rote learning and basic understanding and employ logical skills for searching and then evaluate and judge the usefulness of gleaned information to put their work together I: What are the challenges of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my view, several sections, including, lack of access, lack of technical support, lack of time, lack of fit to the curriculum, and, lack of effective training I: What serious problems you get when you use the Internet in class? T: Well, let me see Yes, it was when I asked my students to the exercise on the website My students did it for a long time because some students played games instead of doing the task So it actually took me a lot of time to control my class when I teach with the Internet I: How you evaluate yourself in using the Internet in your teaching? T: I think Internet-Assisted Language Teaching is a term focusing on implementing Internet-based EFL teaching As you can guess, utilizing the Internet in English as a foreign language class, on the other hand, is a very recent innovation in language pedagogy There is no doubt that the Internet is among the newest and most state-of- theart existing technologies which is dominating each and any aspect of life with increasing speed It is commonly believed that technology can help teachers to improve access to the different types of existent media to support and extend traditional materials I: How often you use the Internet in your foreign language teaching? T: Personally, I usually make use of the Internet e-learning-based teaching resulted in better performance in writing and reading, traditional class learners performed better in speaking and structure When looking at websites, students are more influenced by color and animation than by content So I‟ve tried to use more bright-colored pictures to teach Vocabulary Besides, Many times, I use the Internet to provide video materials that can be used in language classrooms You know, This is down to the fact that these web-based programs encourage language students to learn vocabulary, grammar, and cultural literacy at their individual proficiency levels So, my students could increase their time on task by far, as compared to relying solely on traditional classroom time In language practice, I use PowerPoint-linked websites to show online images about things or products representing a particular culture, any images relating to the lecture so that students can practice questionsand-answers, storytelling or description, etc Sometimes my students have some questions about the lessons and with the Internet, I could show some more information that is not in the textbook I think I surf some websites or times per week, which really helps my students increase their knowledge and motivates them to learn more actively I: What are the benefits of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my view, the main advantages of using the Internet in EFL classes can be keeping upto-date and the efficacy of teaching and learning When it comes to the efficacy of teaching and learning , the Internet gives students the opportunity to build knowledge together by expressing themselves in print and then assessing, evaluating, comparing and reflecting on their own views and those of others They have the opportunity to talk with many people at the same time and not wait their turn, as in the conventional oral group classroom setting Besides, most of the lessons are often reluctant to speak in English A lot of and continuous practices are highly needed to improve their fluency One of the ways is using technology in their daily life It could be done through a video blog, short video in Facebook or Zalo, voice note recording, etc Through using digital tools, my students are extremely motivated and eager to participate in the instructional activities and games I used Quizizz and Kahoot for evaluating the students because so many teachers already used them And sometimes I used Kahoot and Schoology for evaluating the students But the students prefer to use Kahoot because the sounds of that Kahoot make them happy and it is fun From those resources, I could review the student's understanding But mostly I like Kahoot because the students could review their vocabulary and they could play games easily I: What are the challenges of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: Based on my experience, the most considerable disadvantage was said to be the fact that the Internet would provide ample opportunity for the learners, especially in their young ages, to use the Internet for unethical purposes In terms of the Internet filtering, you know, the possibility of language learners‟ misuse of the Internet and its being time- consuming and tedious Secondly, the Internet might be time-consuming and tedious while five others held that it can be so engaging, replete with diverse activities and tasks that the students would get distracted from the main goal of the course In addition, teachers can struggle with the Internet due to its low speed and lack of facilities as well as the profound sense of the authorities‟ mistrust toward the Internet I found it difficult to teach my classroom using technology because I have to so many preparations before the class This takes a lot so it consumes my energy However, it must be tried to improve the learning efficacy I: How you evaluate yourself in using the Internet in your teaching? T: I think I‟m doing kind of well with the use of the Internet I found some websites that are my favorite websites on the Internet As I said above, I often visit violet websites to download a lot of files for my lessons in a short time I would make more use of the Internet in my teaching if I had more time Students know more than I about the Internet And Some students seem to learn better from computers than from books But as you can imagine, the Internet skills are acquired informally (e.g, self-taught, learned from friends/colleagues etc), rather than on a taught course Therefore, I‟m trying to find more useful websites to improve my lessons gradually Sample Interview 10: I: How you understand the term “Internet-Assisted Language Teaching”? T: I think Internet-Assisted Language Teaching is one of the new teaching approaches these days The reason I think so is that the development of information technology based on the Internet enhances the dynamic of English teaching at school because there is a need to create interesting and independent learning activities that motivate and provide chances to the learners to practice the language functionally in an authentic environment I: How often you use the Internet in your foreign language teaching? T: Personally, I like the usefulness of using email, blogs, and Facebook as current communication media that are available on the Internet to facilitate students in learning English both inside or outside the classroom I think it is hugely important to use the Internet so that these activities are aimed at encouraging students to take advantage of authentic environments outside the classroom in order to practice language skills and communicate with others For example, I think that the Internet is most usable when I have to find facts about an issue in reading skills so my students could be more excited to broaden their knowledge about the topic of reading text I sometimes ask my students to go online and search for examples of sentence patterns and expressions often used for a particular topic, then students can share with their classmates to practice speaking or writing lessons However, it takes a lot of time, so I just apply it once or twice a week I: What are the benefits of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my view, the advances in the Internet used in class as the new option for teaching media and resources Firstly, you know, the Internet has unlimited supplemental language resources such as reading texts, pronunciation exercises etc which students can access to improve technically in the language For example, I think the most common Internet-based materials teachers prefer to use when they teach are stories, songs, games, cultural activities, flashcards, handcraft activities, and exercises of any kind Furthermore, with the Internet, teachers could allow their students to use authentic sites created by native speakers, rather than English learning type designed ones in the textbooks So teachers could let their students present their findings by searching on the Internet about a certain topic in front of class I: What are the challenges of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my view, there are several obstacles when teachers use the Internet for their teaching First of all, some older teachers could lack knowledge in using some applications on the Internet for example Next, the lack of time exposure to the Internet- based activities is another difficulty that teachers struggle with For example, teachers have the limited time of using some applications in 45 minutes perfectly Besides, it has taken a while until they have been able to use the web autonomously When I find some information for my lessons on Facebook, I must be careful to select the authentic sources of knowledge, which takes me a lot of time I: How you evaluate yourself in using the Internet in your teaching? T: I found it difficult to teach my classroom using technology because I have to so many preparations before the class This takes a lot to consume my energy However, it must be tried to improve the learning efficacy Sample Interview 11: I: How you understand the term “Internet-Assisted Language Teaching”? T: From my view, Internet-Assisted Language Teaching is a phrase that refers to the use of the Internet in the practice of English language teaching, particularly for teachers, as one of the main parties involved in the common practice of English Language teaching Moreover, teachers who are involved in the practice of English language teaching can get any kind of information on the Internet I mean the Internet also provides answers for almost all of their questions I think most teachers may believe that they may get much benefit through the use of the Internet because they can use it as one way of getting resources for conducting their teaching or to get in touch with other English teachers from other places I: How often you apply the Internet in your teaching? T: To be honest, I often make use of the Internet for my teaching As you can see, I frequently search for further information about the lesson to give my students a lot of enhanced lessons What I mean is that I can make use of the Internet in most of my lessons by giving my students extra resources and material from the Internet, such as interactive lessons and educational games You know, Tests, homework, collaboration with students and research can all be done from any computer with Internet access Furthermore, I also love using The Websites to search more ideas for my lessons, which contains: first, texts that follow the conventions of print based texts (e.g narratives, information texts), second, familiar genres with new features, and last but not least new genres, multi modal texts (visual, audio) Personally, I‟ve tried to frequently use some online games, puzzles or quizzes online instead of creating them It is kind of simple for me to know how to play and I could instruct my students to review vocabulary, grammar I: What are the benefits of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: I believe that with the Internet, teachers could benefit a lot when they use it in their lessons Firstly, teachers could use task-based Web activities on the Internet to use a variety of authentic Web resources for communications, information collections, problemsolving tasks, and so on In this case, teachers could use real language, interesting stories and amusing activities to motivate their students Moreover, teachers can use pre-created Web activities to adopt many interactive language exercises in the textbooks As you can guess, such websites have been already created by others and are easily accessible on the Web I:What are the challenges of Internet-Assisted Language Teaching? T: In my opinion, the primary problems that most EFL teachers faced in regard to the use of technology in the classroom is that we haven‟t accepted much professional training on how to integrate technology in our classroom Even though we are using technology in our classroom, it is a result of personal adaptation and improvement Additionally, it must take teachers a lot of time to find suitable material for their topic in their lessons when they prepare their lesson plans because, you know, there is various information that is not authentic I often struggle with the slow Internet connection speed, so my lessons cannot be done effectively, which is really time-consuming Besides, I often spend less than 10 minutes asking my students to play games although the ideal period of time for playing is about 15 minutes You know, I have to achieve other objectives of teaching grammar in a lesson plan, not only games for fun I: How you evaluate yourself in using the Internet in your teaching? T: I think I‟m doing pretty bad with the use of the Internet I‟ve found that my students have some problems finding web sites appropriate to their work because I cannot manage my class well when I use the Internet in my lesson Next, I find it difficult to use search engines although I am often overwhelmed by the number of sites that a search engine offers me As you can guess, I not often learn of useful sites from my colleagues, so I need to improve more and more effectively in applying the internet in my teaching especially in this pandemic Covid-19 today Sample Interview 12: I: How you understand the term “Internet-Assisted Language Teaching”? T: I think Internet-Assisted Language Teaching is one of the new teaching approaches these days The reason I think so is the development of information technology based on the Internet enhances the dynamic of English teaching at school because there is a need to create interesting and independent learning activities that motivate and provide chances to the learners to practice the language functionally in an authentic environment I: How often you use the Internet in your foreign language teaching? T: Personally, I like the usefulness of using email, blogs, and Facebook as current communication media that are available on the Internet to facilitate students in learning English both inside or outside the classroom I think it is hugely important to use the Internet so that these activities are aimed at encouraging students to take advantage of authentic environments outside the classroom in order to practice language skills and communicate with others I created some groups on Facebook for my students to exchange their discussions and I often let them work in groups online to play games or puzzles in classes I: In your opinion what are the benefits of the Internet used in language Teaching? T: In my view, there are several obstacles when teachers use the Internet for their teaching First of all, some older teachers could lack knowledge in using some applications on the Internet You know, the younger teachers may love using the modern apps for their students to motivate their students‟ spirit in class in the pre-teaching period, for example In addition, when we have prepared teaching activities by using technology, we often encounter some technical problems in the classroom at the time we start the class, such as poor internet connection and the compatibility of particular devices Even though I believe that digital teaching would be helpful, I think I cannot catch up with the fast development of the Internet There are a lot of things to learn when I want to create a game for my lesson I reckon that I am not well equipped with proper training I: How you evaluate yourself in using the Internet in your teaching?
