II Methods of developing supporting sentences III Exercise .6 I Supporting sentences * What is a supporting sentence? - The supporting sentences of a paragraph develop the main idea you presented in the topic sentence When writing supporting sentences you should be giving examples, reasons, or descriptions to support your topic sentence Supporting sentences should focus on the following: They should provide the main supporting points for the paragraph's main idea (topic sentence) - There are usually - supporting sentences in a paragraph - They should be arranged in a logical order - They should NOT begin a new topic or introduce a new idea * Types of supporting sentences There are types of supporting sentences, including:  Supporting definition: Give the definition or meaning of the controlling idea  Supporting explanation: Add more detailed information and explain to the reader to understand the controlling idea more profoundly  Supporting example: Give examples for the reader to help them get the information, imagine it and be able to practice it - For example, in this paragraph: Nowadays, Young people are more immersed in social media than in real life Immersion in social media than in real life means that young people take care of their virtual life more than in real life In the past, people usually went outside and met their friends Today’s youth rely on their computers and cell phones to keep in touch with their friends They usually see what their friends are up to on Facebook or Instagram and rarely go outside and discover different aspects of life As a result, young people can find themselves unprepared in daily life such as they can have difficulty in communication like making a conversation with a stranger or making a speech in front of a crowd For example, I am an extrovert person on the social network I post everything and on my Facebook and express my feeling to my online friends But in real life, people often say I’m an introverted person because I’m pretty quiet I really don’t know what to say As a result, people like me more in virtual life and often feel down when they meet me in person Topic sentence: Nowadays, Young people are more immersed in social media than in real life Supporting Definition: Immersion in social media than in real life means that young people take care of their virtual life more than in real life Supporting Explanation: In the past, people usually went outside and met their friends Today’s youth rely on their computers and cell phones to keep in touch with their friends They usually see what their friends are up to on Facebook or Instagram and rarely go outside and discover different aspects of life As a result, young people can find themselves unprepared in daily life such as they can have difficulty in communication like making a conversation with a stranger or making a speech in front of a crowd Supporting Example: For example, I am an extrovert person on the social network I post everything and on my Facebook and express my feeling to my online friends But in real life, people often say I’m an introverted person because I’m pretty quiet I really don’t know what to say As a result, people like me more in virtual life and often feel down when they meet me in person * Why are supporting sentences important? Because it gives the information that supports the main idea or claim Supporting sentences give the reader details to understand the main idea, or evidence to show why a claim is true or correct They help the reader to get the information more profoundly and understand other aspects of the main idea more deeply If the paragraph does not have any supporting sentences, the reader cannot understand the topic and know what the writer is talking about It makes the paragraph become abstract and meaningless The main idea will have no value if there’s nothing to prove it II Methods of developing supporting sentences A helps/makes B something (Cause-Effect relationship) - When writing to demonstrate why A is really necessary and good We have some structures:  enable sb to sth  help sb to sth  allow sb to sth  allow doing sth  encourage sb to sth  incentivize sb to sth  be entitled to sth/to sth/entitle sb to sth  For instance:  Online courses enable students to learn wherever and whenever they want  Children should not be entitled to complete freedom A equips/gives B something (Cause-Effect relationship) - This way of writing Support Sentences applies to all kinds of ideas, the purpose of those ideas is to prove the good and effective things of something We have some structures:  provide sb with sth/ provide sth to sb  the provision of(n)  equip sb with sth  supply sth to sb/ supply of  Offer sb sth  For instance:  The falling leaves provide a good supply of nutrients to the soil  They revealed that he had supplied terrorist organizations with weapons A is involved in something - This third sentence pattern we should apply to some topics on the following topics: extracurricular activities, breaking the law, or a certain activity  be/get involved/ engaged in sth  engage in sth  engagement in sth  participate in sth  participation in sth  For instance:  You should participate in sports activities in order to keep fit  Your participation in sports activities could help you keep fit A plays an important role in something - This way of writing Supporting Sentences will be applied mainly when you are writing why they are so necessary  A plays an important/a pivotal/ major role in something  A is instrumental in doing something  A is vital/crucial to/for something  A is given (more) importance  For example:  Education plays a major role in the physical and mental development of children A is linked to B - It will be used when you want to express something that is associated with good things there is a strong connection/ correlation between A and B  For example:  You want to say being active helps people stay healthy You can write there is a strong correlation between an active lifestyle and a healthy life A stimulates/helps/boosts/incentivizes/ promotes B to develop (Cause-Effect relationship) -
