THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF LEARNING ENGLISH ON YOUTUBE FOR ENGLISH MAJORS AT HUTECH UNIVERSITY Phạm Thị Diệu Ái, Lê Ngô Nguyệt Anh, Võ Quỳnh Anh, Phạm Tố Bảo* Khoa Tiếng Anh, Trường Đại học Cơng Nghệ TP Hồ Chí Minh (HUTECH) GVHD: ThS Đỗ Thị Hồng Nhung ABSTRACT The English language is not only an international language but also the most popular foreign language in Vietnam which is usually used for business, communication, technology, and many other purposes However, despite having studied English since secondary school with the support of social media and technology, Vietnamese students especially those at Hutech university are unable to use English appropriately in academic situations Therefore, the study aims at exploring the positive effects of Youtube on English language study by surveying sixty-five English-major students from Hutech university The findings revealed that “YouTube '' is the most effective learning method which exerts a significant impact on English listening, speaking skills, and learner autonomy Keywords: English, YouTube, Hutech, Self-study, Students INTRODUCTION English has become such a popular language around the world It is important to have good English to get a great job, therefore Hutech university focuses on developing the use of English in students However, English is not often used in everyday contexts, thus it is hard for students to get good English skills like listening and speaking They have to find something else to access it The popularity of social media for teenagers brings numerous advantages to learning English such as YouTube which is currently the most popular social media platform in Vietnam, where people regularly share videos with others and make connections Although not originally developed and conceived for learning purposes, they can be used as tools able to innovate learning practices in English YouTube doesn't only have fun videos, YouTube can also be used as learning media, in there we too can find so many educational videos on every level, starting from beginner, intermediate, and even advanced levels Moreover, It is free and easy to access There is a high rate of students who use YouTube every day Therefore, it can be a method to find materials and self-study THE IMPORTANT OF LEARNING ENGLISH IN VIETNAM 3332 English is the International Common Tongue Vietnam has joined the WTO since 2006, which has led to more and more large corporations and foreign companies investing in Vietnam to expand the market Thus, having English is a powerful tool for employees to affirm their capacity English is an important tool for learning According to statistics of the Three Percent Database, University of Rochester, in 2016 there were only 633 new translated literary works in the US, accounting for less than 1% of the 300,000 new books published annually by UNESCO 40% of the 600+ books come from Western Europe THE CHALLENGES OF LEARNING ENGLISH Vietnamese students are taught English grammar at secondary school, and most of them lack English listening which hinders them from communicating with others when they join university Hence, the research is made to look for a good method of learning English for self-study students English plays such an important role Society's requirements for language ability for young people are also very high, but the current situation of students' foreign language ability is too low to meet that requirement The average score of first-year students fluctuates from 220-245/990 TOEIC score Only 48.3% of graduates meet the English requirement So the remaining 51.7% not meet the requirements In fact, the ability to communicate in English is a big barrier for Vietnamese students today We learn English from elementary, middle, and high school, go to university, continue to study, and even study at international English centers, but many students when applying for jobs not meet the requirements demand for English skills set by businesses and agencies The reason is why? - Firstly, the curriculum is too heavy on grammar and grammar, while the practice of reflexes and communication is not focused Vietnamese students firmly grasp English grammar, but cannot turn them into tools for communication Grammar is just a foundation to practice other skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing, just like "learning with practice" - Secondly, the unequal English ability among students in the same class leads to difficulties for both lecturers and students in the teaching and learning process , while at a higher level, they feel bored, not want to learn and teachers themselves also have difficulties in teaching and following students - Thirdly, students lack confidence and cannot overcome their own inertia This is the "rock" in the perception of each student We are afraid to speak because we are afraid of being wrong, afraid of being laughed at, and gradually become closed in English lessons Besides, many students are not really aware of the importance of English in today's era Some others have the idea of "standing in this mountain and looking at that mountain", feeling that they are weak in English, so they switch to another language because they think 3333 it's easier, but they don't know that no language is easy to learn when they can't learn it themselves Hard work and no suitable study method - Finally, the learning environment is also an equally important factor Currently, students only use English in compulsory classes and are almost forgotten in other activities And for learning a foreign language, it only takes a while to forget it STUDENT'S MOTIVATION TO LEARN ENGLISH ON YOUTUBE The studies that support the use of YouTube videos in English language learning also support that YouTube videos help learn the language quicker and learners feel motivated in the learning process The survey of 65 students at Hutech University shows that 56,7 percent use YouTube to learn English at least hour per day, and 87,7 percent feel comfortable when learning on YouTube It is also found that the weaker learners feel interested and motivated to interact and learn when audio-visual aids are used in the classroom Metekohy (2010) found that learners watch and listen to YouTube videos as the video contents allow them to listen and watch at a time Therefore, the learners learn the language without much cognitive load and in the learning process, they have lots of fun They have scope to get interesting videos related to the English language from YouTube.Com They get authentic (Malkowsky, 2010, & Pong, 2010) English from the YouTube videos as many of the videos are produced by native speakers of the English language Teachers get the scope to ask learners to speak about the videos they watch in or outside the classroom Using YouTube both inside and outside the class helps enhance conversation, listening, and pronunciation skills YouTube videos can also be utilized as realia to encourage cultural lessons, heighten exposure to “World Englishes'', and fasten authentic vocabulary development (Watkins & Wilkins, 2011) CURRENT STATUS OF ENGLISH LEARNERS ON YOUTUBE With available videos on YouTube channels, it has become a lot easier for Hutech students to learn new languages, particularly English This is a great way to keep students learning, even during their leisure time The common reason they choose YouTube to learn is that it offers an assortment of tools that Hutech students can mix and match to best suit their individual learning styles and increase their academic success Two to three times a week is the ideal amount of time they spend on YouTube to learn English According to the survey, Hutech students majoring in English often visit the three English self-study sites on YouTube: VOA Learning English, TED talks, BBC Learning English The result pointed out that their listening and speaking skills improved the most THE BENEFIT OF LEARNING ENGLISH ON YOUTUBE Learning English online on YouTube is now chosen by many people because of its convenience Learners will be more flexible about their study time and save more money 3334 - Ease of access: With the development of the Internet today, learning English online has become easier These videos are completely free, you don't need to pay a fee to learn them all, you can watch them anytime you like, just need your phone or computer with an Internet connection - Optimizing self-study materials: Hundreds of information, tens of thousands of newspapers, specialized documents and English videos are being downloaded every day from various useful information sources around the world Full, detailed, and diverse content suitable for your needs - Flexibility: When studying online, people can be more flexible in their study time, and arrange and adjust their own timetable Learning English will bring you the initiative when learning, you can watch, and stop at any passage you want In addition, you can download videos and watch them on your phone without an Internet connection -
