during the break at school to search for the information needed Exchange and make a complete report Prepare questions to ask other groups in the coming session AI Procedure: Warm- up: Teacher introduces about the topic of extra-curricular session: The air and water pollution - Teacher shows five questions that related to the environment and asks students to prepare at home - Teacher calls leader of each group to answer Teacher gives feedback and comment - Teacher leads to topic and announces the extra- curricular session starts Presentation The representative of each group will present what they have collected in front of the class and the rest listen to them carefully 2.1 Group Presenter: LE THI LAN ANH The content: The definition of the pollution environment First, I present the definition of the natural environment The natural environment includes all living and non-living organisms that occur in nature, meaning that are not artificial This term is commonly applied to the Earth or to certain parts of the Earth Second, I present the definition of the pollution environment: Human activities including industrialization and agricultural practices contributed immensely in no small measure to the degradation and pollution of the environment which adversely has an effect on the water bodies (rivers and ocean) and air that is a necessity for life The pollution environment consists of water pollution and air pollution Water pollution is any chemical, biological, or physical change in water quantity that harmful influent in living organisms or that makes water unusable for desired uses There are several classes of water pollutants One is diseasecausing agent, which include bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and parasitic worms that enter water from domestic sewage and untreated human and animal waste Air pollution is the presence of substances in the atmosphere that are harmful to the health of humans and other living beings, or cause damage to the climate or to materials There are different types of air pollutants, such as UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com gases (such as ammonia, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, methane and chlorofluorocarbons), particulates (both organic and inorganic), and biological molecules Picture 1:Types of the environment pollution The pollution environment refers to the average long-term changes over the entire Earth These include the nature and humans such as: Change climate Cause some serious diseases Affect people's lives Affect the whole ecosystem (disrupts the balance in our ecosystem) UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com Picture 2: WHO report says over 90% of world breathing bad air 2.2 Group Presenter: LE THI DUNG The content: Causes and effects of water pollution 2.2.1 Causes of water pollution Nowadays, in Vietnam, although the government is trying to apply the policy about protect environment, water pollution is one of the biggest problem of country There are many causes lead to water pollution Some of them play an essential part in making water being polluted are organic, inorganic, industrial and agriculture One main cause of this issue is waste water come from many companies and then being pulled out water bodies, especially into rivers or seas, because this is the most convenient way of treating waste water Farmers who indiscriminately use fertilizers and pesticides in cultivation is also the cause of water pollution Another major cause that making water pollution Every day people everything that waste of water, for instance, wash hands, cars, dishes shower and so on In some development countries, all waste water is treated before dumping to the water bodies Yet in the others countries almost of water is not treated instead of flowing directly into the sea Another cause is the awareness of citizens, people always use water for many purposes and then they dump waste water, garbage or people even throw dead animals into rivers, ponds, lakes also seriously pollute water sources UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com Picture 3: Pollutants (particles, chemicals or substances that make water contaminated) are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without enough treatment to get rid of harmful compounds 2.2.2 Effects of water pollution 2.2 2.1 Effects on human Health: We all drink water that comes from a source: this may be a lake or local river In countries that have poor screening and purification practices, people often get water-borne disease outbreaks such as cholera and tuberculosis In developed countries, even where there are better purification methods, people still suffer from the health effects of water pollution 2.2.2.2 Effects on ecosystems: The effect is that it breeds algae growth and causes the growth of much more water organism This algae attack affects fish and other aquatic animals by absorbing and reducing their oxygen supply Algae growth also clogs fish gills Naturally, the order of ecosystems in that water is affected negatively, as the destruction or introduction of any foreign organism alters the entire food chain in there 2.2.2.3 Effects on animals: Animals, including water animals, die when water is poisoned for various reasons Other animals are stressed and their populations are endangered That water pollution caused a lot of damage and deaths of many animals.Animals are also affected by solid waste thrown into water bodies, as they harm them in many ways 2.2.2.4 Effects on economic cost: It can cost a lot money to purify drinking water Fishing stock is affected negatively when there is a depletion of oxygen Consumers are also wary of fish from these sources and tend to stay away from them, costing fisheries to lose revenue In places where there are water activities or sports, lots of money is spent to clean up the water from algae blooms and the like UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 2.3 Group Presenter: LUU THU HA The content: Causes and effects of air pollution 2.3.1 Causes of air pollution: Industry, transportation, coal power plants and household solid fuel usage are major contributors to air pollution Burning fossil fuel will release a lot of harmful gases into the air and cause smog Smog refers to thick smoke hovering over a particular area and this affects people more easily Both human activity and natural processes can generate air pollution Farmers use fertilizers and pesticides in cultivation is also the cause of air pollution 2.3.2 Effects of Air Pollution: Air pollution may cause diseases, allergies and even death to humans; it may also cause harm to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, and may damage the natural environment (for example, climate change, ozone change, ozone depletion or habitat degradation) or built environment (for example, acid rain) Some of the most devastating effects of air pollution can be viewed under the following points 2.3.2.1 Effects on humans Air pollution is known to cause irritation in the eyes, lungs, nose, and throat cause diseases including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and respiratory infections It creates respiratory problems and exacerbates existing conditions such as asthma and emphysema When continually exposed to air pollution, humans become at higher risk for cardiovascular disease Picture 4: Infographic air pollution Effects of health A set of symptoms Picture 5:Poor quality of the air UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 2.3.2.2 Effects on environment: Air pollution can damage crops and trees in a variety of ways Groundlevel ozone can lead to reductions in agricultural crop and commercial forest yields, reduced growth and survivability of tree seedlings, and increased plant susceptibility to disease, pests and other environmental stresses (such as harsh weather) Picture 6:Drought - Global Warming Acid Rain Climate Change Human Impact On The Environment PNG Picture 7:Man discharge smog into the air 2.3.2.3: Effects on weather The main impact of air pollution on the weather is an increase in natural disasters events such as heat waves, flood, droughts, cyclones, acidic rain and rainstorms Episodes of intense precipitation contribute to flooding, soil erosion, landslides, and damage to structures and crops UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com Picture 8:Global warming causes wildfires Picture 9: Air Pollution Amplified Extreme Weather 2.3.2.4: Effects on Economic impact Air pollution impacts on labor productivity, health expenditures and agricultural crop yields, are projected to lead to global economic costs that gradually increase There's no one-size-fitsall recipe for reducing the impacts of air pollution Picture 10: Natural disasters and environmental pollution can reduce GDP by 0.6 per cent per year from 2016-20, according to the National Centre for Socio-economic Information and Forecast (NCIF) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 2.3.2.5: Effects in Vietnam Vietnam ranks among the 10 countries with the world’s worst air pollution Figures indicate the main factors contributing to the severity of the problem are traffic emissions, industrial production, and construction These factors are causing Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to be cloaked by a dangerously thick cloud of smog, choking locals and posing serious health risks Every year, Vietnam spends a lot of money solving environmental pollution (money for water treatment, industrial emissions, agriculture, medical expenses for treatment) Production was delayed due to epidemics, climate change, resulting in crop failure, dead crops, cattle, poultry, etc Picture 11:The latest study about the environmental performance index of Yale University (the US) reported that Vietnam is in the list of top 10 worst air polluters in the world by 2020 2.4 Group 4: Presenter: NGUYEN THI NGA The content: The solutions to reduce the pollution environment There are simple steps we can take in our everyday life to help reduce the pollution environment 10 UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com Picture 12: Activities to protect the environment 2.4.1 Solutions of water pollution in Vietnam To deal with this problem, both Vietnam Government and citizen should work together To begin with people attitude, they need to aware that water is very important for our life and something such as one of the simplest methods to reduce water pollution such as: - Using less water and avoid unnecessary wastage This will cause less water to get contaminated, ultimately causing lesser water pollution - Using less artificial fertilizers and chemicals, and going in for organic farming will help in limiting water pollution, too Growing a lot of plants in your garden will ensure that the fertilizers and chemicals used are utilized there, and not go into the nearby water bodies - While going to seas, rivers, and lakes, taking the precaution of not throwing waste into them is all important - You may also give a hand to clean up some of the litter there, which would make a small but sure difference - Government should give laws and strict with the site and organization that contribute to water pollution - Besides that need to educate people especially pupils and students to reduce water pollution 2.4.2 Solutions of Air Pollution in Vietnam Everyone knows that air pollution can pose an immediate danger, you need to cultivate new ways towards solving it Firstly, solving the problem of air pollution lies in the hands of every government who has to bring out certain emission laws that regulate pollution in their respective countries Then the government implements these rules and then it must be seen that it is strictly followed by the people Here are some ways of solving air pollution - Public transport such as electric buses, metro, and electric train generally emit less greenhouse gases than cars per This will limit pollution and save you time and money 11 UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com If you are using firewood for cooking, then you need to reduce its usage because may pollute the air immediately - Do not burn leaves, vehicle tires and electrical equipment - Use bicycles for commuting on a daily basis This will now only save the environment, but also increase your immunity and stamina - Indoor pollutants are said to be more dangerous These refer to the pollutants inside your home However, opening the window every day can put an end to this problem - Avoid leaving the house when the air is polluted on the outside - Plant forests Note: Follow the above- listed tips strictly and you can be part of the change Always remember that if you expect something to change, you need to stand up for it - Practice Teacher lets students play a game: WHO IS THE WINNER? Before playing, the students listen to the teacher’s explanation: There are eight numbers Teacher will give questions in boxes and one box is lucky number that gives you 10 points without answering The leader of each group will choose the questions and have minutes to prepare and answer If the answer is wrong, the other will have a chance to answer and get points Each a correct answer will have 10 points In the end, which group gets the highest scores will be the winner Question 1: Is air pollution a substance in the air that can cause harm to humans and the environment? Expected answer: Yes Question 2: What can Acid-rain great damage to? Expected answer: human, animals and crops Question Which of the following is the consequence of pollution? A Increase in the water level in seas B Releases of the hazardous radiations C Increase in the animals in forests D Global warming Expected answer: D Global warming Question Why industries pollute water? A Because they use water in large quantities B Because they release all the pollutants to water C Because industries don’t use water D Because water is an universal solvent Expected answer: B Because they release all the pollutants to water Question 5: In Viet Nam, Which cities are affected the best by pollution? Expected answer: In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city 12 UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com Question Industrial pollution doesn’t contribute to air pollution A True B False Expected answer: B Question What is called for the pollution that can be traced directly to industrial activity? A Soil pollution B Water pollution C Air pollution D Industrial pollution Expected answer: D Question The chemical substance used to destroy the weeds in crops is called A herbicides B monoxides C carob-oxides D pesticides Expected answer: D The result: After playing the game, the points of each group: Group 1: 20 points Group 2: 20 points Group 3: 30 points (the highest score) Groups 4: 10 point Group will be winner Acquirement After the session, Teacher hands out the questions to check the students’ acquirement Asks students to circle the correct answers in minutes then collects and marks, jots down and analyses the result Compare the result before and after the extra-curricular session The result before and after the extra-curricular session Before After As can be seen from the tables above, the knowledge of the students in class 11A10 was greatly enhanced The excellent marks (8,10) increased from to 29 Especially, no mark was lower than It is clear that The English extracurricular session was definitely successful 13 UAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com PART C CONCLUSION Through the practice of the extra-curricular session, it is obvious that the students of class 11A10 are definitely concerned about the topic “Raise students’ awareness in protecting the environment through study about the pollution environment in Vietnam” They are eager to study and search for the information needed to achieve deeper understanding about the issue Much as it is quite a hard topic, they quickly lose themselves in their duties and get a rather good result They are fully aware of their duties at present: study, study more, study forever to become good citizens to constitute and protect the country The more perfect above composition is a report of an English extracurricular session It cannot help making mistakes although I have attempted to finish it Therefore, I would like to express my deep thanks to all of you for your precious ideas to make my teaching session Thank you so much!
