Summary The University of Idaho (UI) is requesting to establish a research site in the the Center for Advanced Forests Systems, under the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers Program (I/UCRC) CAFS was established in 2007 with four member institutions; North Carolina State University (NCSU—lead institution), Oregon State University (OSU), Purdue University (PU), and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT) It has since established research sites at University of Maine (UM), University of Georgia (UGA), University of Washington (UW) and University of Florida (UF) UI will bring expertise, resources, and projects that complement and expand those represented by current CAFS institutions and increase the intellectual merit and broader impact of CAFS within the established program areas Intellectual Merit Intellectual merits for the overall CAFS effort, paraphrased from the 2007 CAFS proposal, follow: “As the world’s population increases, there will be increased pressure to maximize wood production on limited amounts of forested lands To maintain economically viable, wood-based industries, it is necessary to develop and incorporate technological advances into forest management Critical problems facing forestry, and the largest opportunities for breakthrough advances, are in areas that bridge disciplinary boundaries CAFS, links top university based forestry research programs in the United States to conduct multi-university, interdisciplinary, multi-faceted research to solve industry-wide problems The collaborative research conducted under the CAFS umbrella will focus on optimizing genetic and cultural systems to product highquality raw materials for new and existing forest products industries.” UI will expand CAFS efforts by providing additional and specialized expertise and research platforms in the areas of endophyte selection and deployment, seed orchard pest protection and geospatial projections Proposed UI associated CAFS projects will augment and complement current CAFS projects in the broad areas of silviculture, biometrics, wood quality, managing site resource availability, as well as modeling growth, yield and quality of forest plantations to more fully address the needs for scientific and technological advances for enhancing the competitiveness of the US forestry sector UI specifically proposes collaborative projects on developing endophyte screening tools for enhancing western conifer planting stock vigor, testing approaches to protect against seed orchard pests, and geospatial predictions of productivity in response to climate change Broader Impact UI will increase the breadth and reach of broader CAFS impacts Key impacts identified in the 2007 CAFS Proposal are: increased competitiveness of forest products industries and forest landowners, improved knowledge of members of wider range of technical capabilities, enhanced technology transfer between Center scientists and industrial members, expanded scientific knowledge through peer reviewed publications and presentations, expanded training of graduate students with unique interdisciplinary skill sets, recruitment of graduate students from underrepresented groups, and encouragement of undergraduate involvement that may promote more graduate enrollment The UI site has a plan to address diversity issues in this field   TABLE OF CONTENTS For font size and page formatting specifications, see GPG section II.B.2 Total No of Pages Page No.* (Optional)* Cover Sheet for Proposal to the National Science Foundation Proposed Site Director University of Idaho Moscow, ID Dear Mark: I am writing to extend an invitation to the University of Idaho to become a new site in the Center for Advanced Forestry Systems (CAFS), an NSF I/UCRC The Center is currently comprised of eight sites: NC State Univ (lead institution), Virginia Tech., Oregon State Univ., Purdue Univ., the Univ of Georgia, the Univ of Maine, the Univ of Washington and the Univ of Florida At our CAFS Annual Meeting in February 2009, our IAB members and scientists discussed the possibility of your university establishing a site in CAFS and were in favor Thus, pending your successful proposal to NSF and you receiving the qualifying industry membership, CAFS would be pleased to welcome you to establish a new site at the University of Idaho Please note that for the University of Idaho to become a site in CAFS, the university and members would have to agree to adopting the standard membership agreement, already in place in CAFS, modified only by local requirements for the liability clause The existing universities and members are very excited about this expansion of CAFS and, in particular, the excellent research capability of the university scientists and the complementary nature of the research interests and strengths of the universities and their members The proposed expansion would make CAFS a truly national I/UCRC and greatly enhance our research productivity and ability to train students and implement technology innovations to the industry Sincerely, Barry Goldfarb, Professor and Head Director, Center for Advanced
