INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES ELA New Sample Lessons - As part of the continuing implementation of CCGPS in the year 2013 - 2014, the ELA/Literacy team is developing a resource bank of lessons from Georgia teachers to share across the state We are asking teachers to consider submitting a successful ELA lesson created during the past year Each lesson should include the standard(s) being addressed, the instructional task and materials needed, differentiation support, and the assessment you used for knowing if the students have learned the standards you have taught We would also like for you to include sample work so that others may understand what is exemplary Teachers selected will be compensated $200 for each lesson used For more information and to submit lessons visit us at http://ccgps-ela-tasksubmission.wikispaces.com/Resources ELA Sample Unit Frameworks - Created by Georgia teachers and offered for use at the beginning of the current academic year, the unit frameworks have provided an effective starting place for educators to implement the CCGPS As we have moved through the instructional year opportunities for improvement to the existing units have been identified We are now working with cohorts of teacher experts from around the state to upgrade the Sample Unit Frameworks Unit One from each grade level will be upgraded based on all the feedback we have received from users and the parameters of the Tri-State Rubric for Common Core unit planning Resources connected to the units will not change Revised units for the first weeks of instruction will be posted in July These units are for exemplar purposes only Implementation at the local level is entirely optional The units will be made available in editable format so that texts and lessons may be replaced or substituted if desired Dr John D Barge, State School Superintendent November 2, 2022 • Page of 56 Georgia Department of Education ADDITIONAL PROFESSIONAL LEARNING Literacy Design Collaborative - Thanks to a grant from The Gates Foundation, GACIS and the GaDOE trained over a hundred teachers on Literacy Design Collaborative (http://www.literacydesigncollaborative.org/) in Savannah, GA on May 9th and 10th Contact your local RESA for additional training opportunities Webcasts - Our newest professional learning resources, the Common Core Tools Webcasts, are available for viewing on our GSO landing page (see link above) These webcasts feature Georgia educators from all grade levels discussing their instructional strategies and feature authentic student work along with all resources necessary to implement the lessons discussed The webcasts can be watched at the viewer’s convenience and each features 5-8 short videos that can split into shorter sessions as desired New webcasts for grades 5, 9, and Kindergarten became available last month New this month is Grade 10 https://www.georgiastandards.org/Common-Core/Pages/ELA.aspx RESOURCES WE RECOMMEND From Georgia’s Striving Reader program: Professional Development for Principals: In this module, you will have a chance to take stock of some of the key forces at work in your school You will consider ways to foster teacher growth, and you will learn about a system of clarifying your goals and charting your progress toward meeting them http://www.comprehensivereadingsolutions.com/professional-development-for-principals/ Alphabet and Print Knowledge: Children often demonstrate a conscious awareness of letters and print by pointing to letters, singing the alphabet song, scribbling and writing, and reading environmental print Despite the ease with which children interact with print, research shows that they not come to this awareness naturally Instead, children need teachers and other adults to bring their attention to print and to create many opportunities for structured and incidental experiences with letters and words Student Health Survey II The Georgia School Personnel Survey (GSPS) is an anonymous, statewide survey instrument that identifies school climate issues that have a negative impact on student achievement The questions will mirror the school climate questions in the Georgia Student Health Survey II Data from the GSPS will be used to calculate the School Climate Star Rating within the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) to determine a correlation between the student responses on the Georgia Student Health Survey II and school personnel responses on the GSPS The Georgia School Personnel Survey will officially open on Monday, May 6, 2013 and will remain open through Friday, June 28, 2013 All teachers, school administrators, certified staff members and classified/other staff members (paraprofessionals, office staff, cafeteria workers, custodians, etc.) are encouraged to participate in the Georgia School Personnel Survey Most teachers should be able to participate in the GSPS from their classroom computer There are approximately 50 questions on the survey and it should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete Survey responses are anonymous TEST-OUT OPTION and the NCAA FINANCIAL AID Under NCAA legislation, units of credit earned through demonstration of subject area competency via testing out of courses using the End of Course Tests will not count as a core course credit for athletic aid for any student seeking NCAA Division I or II athletic scholarships However, only 16 core units of credit are required for graduation based on NCAA Division I requirements Division II schools will have the same 16 core course requirements beginning August 1, 2013 Therefore, since NCAA requirements of 16 core credits are less than the 23 units currently required for graduation from a Georgia public high school, Georgia’s high school student athletes will be able to participate in the opportunities earning units of credit through the “test out” option Also, note that current Georgia code only allows each student to earn up to three units of credit through demonstration of subject area competency via testing out of courses Dear Superintendents: Dr John D Barge, State School Superintendent November 2, 2022 • Page 54 of 56 Georgia Department of Education We are excited to announce a collaboration with the National Center for Youth Issues to launch the first ever Education Works Leadership Institute to be held at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta from Sept 15-17, 2013 We wanted to let you know about this special event now, so you can save the date on your calendars, and be on the lookout for more registration details to follow in the near future Briefly, this Institute will pull together all those interested in the future course of public education in Georgia, and provide a forum for thought leaders and practitioners (district and building level) to showcase exciting initiatives already taking place in public schools throughout the state of Georgia, as well as nationally, and to plan for the future We’re building a team of incredible national and GA-based speakers to lead keynote, pre-conference and breakout sessions, as well as to facilitate panels on key initiatives The Institute will have five exciting tracks: Global Workforce Initiative, Pathways to Prosperity, School Climate, Literacy and School Improvement Be on the lookout for more details to follow, including a link to a special website landing page featuring highlights of the Institute, and info on how to register The cost for this power-packed two day event is only $125 per person, which will include three meals, plus refreshment breaks!
