Shipe & Christine B Shipe ach year, during the third weekend in July, the riverside town of Danville, PA holds a grand celebration of its rich history and heritage The Danville Heritage Festival provides a chance for both locals and visitors alike to recall the vibrant history of the region while enjoying the flavors and culture of the present community Danville’s history includes a documented role in the westward expansion of America through its ties to the growth of the railroad industry In days gone by, the mountains surrounding this quaint town provided narrow seams of high quality iron ore, anthracite coal and limestone to the community – the ideal combination for iron production This abundance of natural resources, combined with the multitude of Welsh, Irish and German immigrants in the area who became employed as puddlers and miners, created an iron industry mecca that spurred growth and prosperity in Danville for many years In the 1850’s, the country could hardly sustain the rapid rise of the expanding railroad industry By this point, Danville had forged a reputation as an iron-making titan, and the town created and manufactured the very first iron “T” rail in the country At one point, 14 | TRAVEL GUIDE over 1,000 people were employed in the iron production industry in Danville Many of the 18th-century mansions in town were financed by the iron and coal industries As the early twentieth century dawned, another industry began to rise in town-healthcare In 1910, a tiny woman with a generous heart, Abigail Geisinger, founded Geisinger Medical Center Today, Geisinger has grown into one of the most revered hospital systems in the country The main campus in Danville has well over 500 beds and employs more than 5,000 workers Geisinger Health System now serves more than 1.5 million patients across 13 regional branch campuses, and employs more than 30,000 healthcare workers in total From iron to healthcare, Danville’s rich heritage inspired its people to create the Heritage Festival The festivities customarily begin with a Friday evening parade and block party in downtown Saturday is always the busiest day, with many events scheduled from dawn until well after dark One of the highlights of the weekend is a grand display of fireworks over the Susquehanna River on Saturday evening The Festival concludes on Sunday morning after a traditional hymn sing and service on the peaceful banks of the Susquehanna The Festival encompasses several areas in and around Danville A spot outside town on State Route 642 West showcases possibly the oldest commercial cider press in the country The “walk around” that used to power the apple grinder is still intact In addition to the historic 1865 cider press, visitors can also find the Franklin Furnace on site This bank blast furnace models the same design as the first successful blast furnace in America, one built in Boston in 1650 During its time in operation, it produced approximately 45 tons of crude iron per week Informal talks are given throughout the weekend for interested visitors In Danville, Hess Field becomes the hub of Saturday activities Once referred to by locals as “the flats,” Hess Field is a beautiful open space nestled in a gap of the Montour Ridge section of the Allegheny Mountains Throughout the day, log splitters, pottery makers, weavers and blacksmiths give demonstrations and show off their talents Additional demonstrations include limestone burning, “Sherman Necktie” making, and various period-specific activities An antique car show, live entertainment, and local food vendors round out the educational and enjoyable day of festivities A multitude of competitions and recreation opportunities are also held at Hess Field and neighboring locations on Saturday One of the highlights of the games is the quoits contest This competition is open to the public with “ringers” vying to be declared champion At the nearby middle school, a tennis tournament is held A Saturday morning bike ride allows riders to view several abandoned mines and learn a bit about the history of mining in the area at the same time Avid runners can enter the annual 5K Run, held in honor of the Festival The race is held on the historic J Manley Robbins rail trail, which is the oldest known rail trail in the United States OVER 1,000 PEOPLE WERE EMPLOYED IN THE IRON PRODUCTION INDUSTRY A myriad of other trails in the area create a perfect excuse to spend the entire weekend in Danville while attending the Heritage Festival The Montour Preserve is situated just a short drive north of town and boasts a 165-acre lake, hiking trails, a fossil pit, an educational nature center, picnic pavilions, and much more Hopewell Park on Route 11 has been transformed into a mountain biking paradise with trails that run up and down the hillside On Ferry Street in downtown Danville, the Thomas Beaver Library is open for visitors to tour the original limestone building with pristine original wooden floors, and a stained glass ceiling On the Saturday of the Festival, experts on a variety of topics are often available to educate and entertain Local churches in town also host programs on everything from gravestone symbols to period fashion Visitors looking to explore some of the other historic parts of town during the weekend are encouraged to download the Historic Walk Danville mobile app or pick up a copy of the brochure from the Columbia Montour Visitors Bureau’s Welcome Center in Bloomsburg A walk through the streets of Danville is a to restore, preserve, and protect the covered bridges of Columbia County The CCCBA is comprised of dedicated local volunteers who are passionate in their efforts to maintain and preserve the area’s bridges for future generations to enjoy In 2002, the association took custody of the Josiah Hess Bridge because it was in such a state of decay that the CCCBA feared it may collapse into Huntington Creek However, subsequent fundraising provided funds needed to save the bridge, and it was turned into a tourist destination In 2004, the association also acquired the Stillwater Bridge The roof of this bridge was in poor condition, and overall stability was a concern The Stillwater Bridge is currently the longest free-standing bridge in the country, and is also the only one having a herring bone patterned deck Again, adequate funds were raised and the appropriate repairs were made The CCCBA acquired another bridge in 2015 when the Shoemaker Bridge was deeded to the association Since the bridge was no longer able to support vehicle traffic, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation retired it from use and the CCCBA moved in Several trees threatened the bridge and were felled to solidify its future protection Several other minor repairs were also completed shortly after the deed transfer All three bridges are now open to the public for its enjoyment As part of the process, picnic tables and trash cans were placed on the bridges Each month, a team of volunteers cleans the bridges and removes trash These remarkable wooden spans now regularly host family gatherings, business picnics, photo shoots, and wedding ceremonies, in addition to daily tourist traffic Actor Burt Reynolds even visited the Josiah Hess Bridge and signed the guest log Preserving the bridges is not always simple The “300 Year Flood” on Huntington Creek occurred in 2006 The West Paden Bridge, one half of the Twin Covered Bridges, was destroyed by flood waters It appeared the Josiah Hess Bridge might succumb to flooding as well, but after the waters receded, it survived – barely The high waters had badly eroded the abutment and the bridge was on the verge of collapse CCCBA volunteers and an Amish construction company came to the rescue The crews secured the bridge and were able to rebuild the abutment The West Paden Bridge was reconstructed in 2008 and restored to its original state In summer 2017, the Stillwater Bridge went through an overhaul of its own Many support features were replaced, including the side panels Two windows were added, one on each side of the bridge A grant from Williams, an energy company, provided the needed funds to paint the bridge The painting, which is the final touch in the restoration process, will happen after the new wood has seasoned The CCCBA hosts two major fundraising events each year “Breakfast for the Bridges” is held each year in June at the Masonic Lodge in Orangeville “Christmas on the Bridges” is held the first Sunday of December on the Twin Bridges and the Josiah Hess Bridge This event includes free hayrides with Santa and Mrs Claus, a bake sale, and fabulous homemade ham and bean soup Just a mile down the road on the Josiah Hess Bridge, there are wine and beer tastings from local establishments along with local farm market vendors and crafters These events are always open to the public, and the CCCBA welcomes any and all attendees to help support their mission The local Visitors Bureau continues to help spread the charm of these wooden treasures with their yearly photo contest, the annual release of a limited edition puzzle, and a very popular fall festival The Covered Bridge and Arts Festival celebrates the region’s beloved covered bridges in a four-day extravaganza In 2019, the Festival will celebrate its 38th year The festival is always held in early October at Knoebels Amusement Resort, and features more than 400 crafters and over 35 food vendors It is one of the largest craft festivals in the state, so visitors can expect to spend a full day exploring the park and vendors You won’t go home empty-handed!
