Student Reflections Oliver Cygan Kathryn Keller College of Liberal Arts School of Fine Arts Oliver Lee Cygan was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota Following his time studying visual arts at the Perpich Center for Arts Education, he decided to attend UMD to study Environmental Science After taking an introductory course, on the recommendation of his roommate, instead he switched his major to Communication and also minored in LGBTQ Studies, English, and Philosophy Oliver is adamant that choosing to take courses in a number of related fields is invaluable to him as a student, as he is able to borrow knowledge and a variety of methodologies and apply them across disciplines Kathryn (Katie) Keller is originally from Clear Lake, Wisconsin, and fell in love with Duluth at a young age during trips to visit her grandparents Though initially against coming to UMD, the campus tour and meetings with faculty won her over Katie initially intended to pursue a BFA in Musical Theatre, and while she quickly discovered other passions, the Theatre Department is her home Now graduating with degrees in Theatre and English Literature, it’s clear that those other passions led her to the English Department at UMD, where she was able to foster her love for historic literature Her proudest accomplishments have been working with Theatre faculty as a dramaturg, using her love for history, research, and analysis to inform productions by developing a deeper understanding of the script She has also worked as a director and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Stage Theatre Company, the student run theatre company that operates independently of, but in cooperation with, the Theatre Department Beginning in his first year, he became an active member and volunteer of UMD’s Queer and Allied Student Union As a sophomore, he became the organization’s chairperson, which he cites as being one of his most formative experiences in college, as he encountered the complexities of organizing and community-building For his work in the organization, he received a Student Leadership Award from Kirby Student Center Further on in his college career, he received honors from the Department of Communication, Sexuality and Gender Equity Initiatives, and the university-wide Office for Equity and Diversity for his commitment to both academic achievement and activism on campus Katie has said, “My English classes taught me to think deep, my theatre classes taught me to think wide.” Her time at UMD has been defined by that broadening of perspective Future plans for Katie include reading, travel, and continuing to explore the impact that literature has, both on its own and in the context of a live performance Outside of his academic life, Oliver enjoys making visual art, writing poetry, and hiking Following graduation, he plans to keep his career options open while travelling, creating, and working University Honor Scholars Candidates for Commission Ryan Goei Gown: The flowing gown comes from the 12th century, evolving from the dress of medieval guilds and the early religious orders Today it is a symbol of democracy of scholarship It is black for all degrees with standard sleeves for the bachelor’s degree recipient, long, closed sleeves for the master’s, and standard or round full sleeves for the doctoral degree For the doctoral degree, the front face of the gown has velvet panels and has three chevron bars of velvet across the sleeves in black or in the color distinctive of the faculty’s discipline Ceremonial Objects The Mace, which is carried by the faculty member leading the academic procession, symbolizes leadership and authority Use of a mace dates back to the 12th century when it was carried by kings’ bodyguards Even in more modern times, the mace has maintained some of its ancient function of keeping order The doorkeeper of the Minnesota House of Representatives has a mace for use in formal House activities The Cap: The black academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship and independence worn by all bachelor’s and master’s graduates The term “mortar-board” is derived from the similar, four-sided mortar-board used by masons A clue as to why Oxford faculty members chose the square cap is found in the 1564 poem, “Tis square like scholars and their books: The rest are round, but this is square to show that they
